| Lesson: Ignored![]() Inside the meeting, Davis had just presented his colleagues with what he said was a 20-page memo outlining his prescription for a way out of this mess. He did not offer details to the press, yet did not spare the party and the president scathing criticism in his public comments. "The president swallows the microphone every time he opens his mouth," Davis said. He believes Bush's staunch opposition to the Democratic housing bill and the SCHIP bill, for example, is hurting rank and file. Look at yesterday's vote on the SPRO, where Republicans defied the president in droves. Lo and behold, the White House says today that it will not veto the bill. Today is also the day when the House takes up the farm bill, which the president has promised to veto. It’s expected that this will become the second veto of Bush's administration to be overridden -- though the farm bill has more of a parochial dynamic than the national political one.Show of hands. How many of us are upset by the things that Davis thinks we're upset about? Anyone really angry about Bush's opposition to SCHIP or a mortgage bailout? And how about that farm bill, huh? Sure, those issues may appeal to a percentage of squishy moderates, but as recent elections should have made all too clear, trying to attract moderates in ways that piss off the base is a recipe for electoral disaster. Of course, Davis may be ignoring the giant porker in the room for good reason. According to the earmarks database, Davis' name is attached to $48 million in earmarks, and the Heritage Foundation credits him with requesting one of the largest pork earmarks in history. It seems the siren songs of your tax money are just too sweet for this ship of fools to resist. Comments1
All moderates need a gun in the mouth.

You know how they keep making these Anti-Military Iraq movies that keep bombing at the Box Office? And you know how the movie industry puts blame on every conceivable reason for the failure of the movies *except* that they're Anti-Military? Same thing here. They just can't come to grips with the fact that they're not producing a legislative product their target audience wants. Posted by: electricferret at May 14, 2008 04:28 PM (rHh6C) 3
Let's face it, we (mainstream conservatives) aren't a bloc the GOP is interested in winning anymore. The sooner we accept that the sooner we'll stop being shocked at this type of crap.
About that farm bill. With crops generating such high prices, why exactly are we subsidizing farmers? I love this racket agri-business has, when prices are low we have to subsidize them, when prices are high we have to pay more and still subsidize them. How's that work exactly? Yeah- the problem is clearly that congressional Republicans haven't grown government enough and are spending too little money. Rep. Davis? You sir, are a fucking imbecile. This is not your fathers Republican party. they will do what they want and are being driven by what feels good, as opposed to what is actually good for the country. We have zero conservative leadership on the national level, no one is making the case in a reasonable and measured way that sells to the people. We are fucking adrift. Another potentially great Senator -- John Ensign of Nevada (Reid and Ensign, amazing they can both be from Nevada). Unfortunately he has the misfortune of heading up the RNSC, and he seems to be letting himself be co-opted by the party apparratus.

What people are worried about is whether their jobs are going to be sent to China, and whether their kids can compete with jobs against illegal immigrants who'll work for next to nothing because thirty of them split the rent on one house.
They're worried about how the economy can survive $200-a-barrel oil. They're worried about how much further they're going to have to cutback their lifestyles to pay the grocery bill. And they're worried that the politicians in Washington don't seem to have a clue what it's like for the average American trying to get by these days. Dudes, whatever.
The reason why there are losses is because Bush has not bothered to communicate one conservative idea in 7 years. Yeah, the SCHIP program sucks, but why? Oh, because the "children" to be covered include 28 year olds? ahhh ok. And the media has made damn sure that there is NO positive story out there at all. Lower home prices aren't a boon to lower income families, but a hurt on the people who bought into a 30 year mortgage. Look, the left hated and insulted Reagan just as badly as they do W. The difference is is that Reagan actually tried to send a message that people could understand. Fuck. fuck. fuck. The thing about McCain is is that I have no faith that he can communicate any better than Bush. That was my Romney or Thompson were so important. They both actually had the brains to understand conservative ideals and the gumption and backsass to fight the media with the bully pulpit. Posted by: joeindc44 at May 14, 2008 04:55 PM (QxSug) 13
As for the ant's eye perspective of whether gas prices or china or job security played a roll in why one congressman was elected over another, who knows.
Shit, at least an ideal republican president would explain to the American people why gas prices are so high. No drilling, no refineries, gas taxes, supply and demand, etc. Or explain that the foreclosure rate is because the gummint strongarmed banks into lending money to people with bad credit. and to speculators. Nope, let's just sit there with the who-farted look on our faces. Posted by: joeindc44 at May 14, 2008 04:59 PM (QxSug) 14
# 11 And they're worried that the politicians in Washington don't seem to have a clue what it's like for the average American trying to get by these days. No worries there: beltway pols *don't* have a clue on either side of the aisle what it's like. I figure we all instinctively know that. A lot of these fucktards that run for office wanted to be a Pol and went on to attend some liberal college to get a degree in Poli-Sci & Law so they could grow up to be the very thing we generally despise: another out of touch Pol lobbying it up in the beltway for personal gain. The reason why there are losses is because Bush has not bothered to communicate one conservative idea in 7 years. Right on, joeindc. I like GW, but one of his great weaknesses has been his public communcations. It would be tolerable, if the VP or cabinet members stepped up and filled that role, but they haven't. Instead they've let nearly all Democrat attacks go effectively unanswered, with only half-hearted attempted rebuttals. I'll give him credit for pushing the privatization of social security, but there really anything else much to point to. And it's not like the GOP-controlled contress did much either. Wasn't there one senator who stood out during the Great McCain Immigration Swindle? I think that honor would also include my former senator John Cornyn (I unfortunately traded him for John Kerry just recently - grrrrr), who McCain told, "fuck you, I know more about this than anyone else in the room" during one of the debates. Reckon Maverick'll go after Obama like this? Rhetorical question, I know. Shit, at least an ideal republican president would explain to the American people ... Yes, the Republicans have steered away from fiscal conservatism, or limited government, or the "contract with America" that got them elected. And no, they don't know why they're taking a beating here.
But we MUST vote for McCain and his Maverickness being a slim portion less liberal than the Democrats. Why, you may ask? As it says in the article: He then spoke of the need to "re-brand" the party in the likeness of McCain... Brilliant. So vote for McCain and the GOP leadership promises to fill the party with mavericks offending Conservatives at every turn. See this is what we can tell them we really want by just voting for McCain. Wait, was that persuasive at all to anyone? Vote for McCain and we'll take the GOP further into Big Government spending hell while offending Conservatives as much as possible... Is that really their strategy? Posted by: Gekkobear at May 14, 2008 06:05 PM (ewwUJ) 20
Is that why the Republicans lost more seats during his second term than they have in GWBs second term?
First,Reagan managed to do a lot with that Democrat Congress, including shoving his tax bills down Tip O'Neil's throat. Second, president's third quarter elections historically lead to losses in Congress. W's losses weren't as bad as other presidents (not that W felt the need to point that out). Finally, I don't think we really need to debate the success of Reagan. He got GHWB elected, and did a few other things here and there. Then again, not even Reagan stop Ross Perot from handing the two subsequent elections to Clinton. Posted by: joeindc44 at May 14, 2008 06:05 PM (QxSug) 21
Sorry, that was harsh. Maybe I'm wrong. How many people here want to "re-brand" the party in the likeness of McCain?

Other than tax cuts, cutting spending, and removing programs that aren't working, you mean? He can say whatever he wants, he can give congress whatever budget he wants, he can ask them to cut spending all he wants, in the end, they control the budget. Don't blame President Bush for all this, not entirely. He's partly to blame, but it's congress mostly. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 14, 2008 06:12 PM (3+3kx) 25

No, he's done his job, as far as the basic working of the presidency is concerned. He's been a good manager, a good worker. He just has been a crappy public relations guy, a poor leader in terms of the American public. And the sad thing is, at least half of the president's job is to be a PR flack, a guy who stands up and communicates. Reagan's genius wasn't that he was flawlessly conservative, it was that he could do both jobs well.

DrewM. Thank FDR for the farm subsidies. During the depression, farms were still for the most part family farms. When the weather finally quit creating the great dust bowl losses to agricultural homesteads, EVERYONE grew bumper crops. Hence, the prices stayed so low on the harvests that the financially fatigued farmers continued to lose their farms to the corporations and banks, despite their bumper crops. FDR got to look like the "good guy" to the family farmer by providing subsidies for the poor farmer to rotate fields for the fallow season required by nature anyway every year off for year cultivated. But naturally, once subsidies were instigated, they were never repealed despite some facts. 1. Family farms are nearly non-existent, sold out to corporate long ago. 2. Corporations certainly do NOT need welfare checks aka subsidies. 3. The depression ended by the conclusion of WWII when everything went boom market.

Just to play devil's advocate...are we maybe the nutroots, here, claiming that following a more ideological play would help the party regain power, meanwhile, in reality, the voters actually want "moderates" i.e. RINOs?
Now, just to shoot down my own theory, I think a lot of RINOs aren't very moderate while the Dems who are winning these seats are conservative. Here is my proposed moderate/conservative platform that would appeal to a lot of people: 1. Stop illegal immigration. Slightly increase legal immigration at the same time to defuse the "GOP is racist" card. Reform the entire immigration process which is very expensive and time consuming for legal, legitimate immigrants. 2. Cut spending/Kill programs. It doesn't have to be by a lot even to start, but a symbolic PR campaign that explains why some programs should die. Mitt Romney had a great line about how many jobs training programs we had (20~30) and how we could simply select the most effective of those to expand while killing the deadwood. That would also save money for sure with admin costs, etc. Programs to be axed need to be shown to be ineffective wastes of money. If there are actually decent programs in the same field, take some of the cut money to expand them, rewarding success, and deflecting any criticism. 3. I would say "Cut Taxes" but I am not sure we have as much scope there anymore then when it was 70% rates. If we could cut spending first, then tax cuts become more palatable. 4. Tax Reform. I think this should be sold as revenue-neutral but with detailed explanations about how many IRS staff will be fired, and how they will be retrained as manure handlers. 5. Healthcare. Some of the ideas from Rudy's campaign and others were good, such as limiting mandates (but it needs a PR campaign attached to show how you could buy your own eyeglasses and save money rather than having eyecare mandated.) I'd say we should tax benefits, too. Make it revenue-neutral by lowering taxe rates, but just by taxing benefits, it would be a great start. Maybe skip all of the above and just concentrate on baby steps like making insurance a national market? 6. Foreign Policy: I think we're doing fine. I wonder if we could get some pissed off Colombians, Mexicans, and Canadians on camera to bitch about the Dems...we need to kill the meme that the Dems will make us beloved. Posted by: Harun at May 14, 2008 09:52 PM (naYcX) 46
I'm with joenindc. The President has enormous power to set the national agenda and certainly can knock heads of congressmen of his own party. Bush did little to lead the conservative movement. Bush's inability to articulate basic principles was a crucial handicap. He was rarely capable of making a persuasive argument off the cuff. Instead of getting an asskicking figurehead/spokesman for the Party to define the message on TV and compensate for his own limited communication skills, he put in some very weak men to run the RNC. That's on his shoulders. He had some very dubious domestic legislative priorities besides the tax cuts and early on the House/Senate GOP went along with them. Then the dems went after Tom DeLay and we gave him up pretty easily. Even though DeLay wasn't great on spending, he had pretty conservative instincts on nearly everything else. Our Senate leaders, at the same time, were terrible- guys like Frist and Lott, Liddy Dole, the queen of resume over substance, as head of the NRSC. Bush did a bad job explaining and defending our position in the war. When House Republicans implied that Clinton launched cruise missiles to distract the country from Monica Lewinsky, the Democrats fought back like banshees. The Administration did little to fight back "the war for oil," "bush lied, kids died" propaganda. It mattered. In 1991, for instance, Dick Cheney was a near universally respected manager and statesman. Now his national reputation is in complete shambles. So, we lost the Senate, we have weak leadership in the House, it's no wonder that Congressmen descended into a craven attempt to buy job security. I'm not excusing it, but I think the President has to take a lot of the blame for the damage to the Republican brand. Sorry this is so long, but I've been working/volunteering for the GOP since high school and I can't believe what has been squandered in twenty years. Bush is not a Conservative. So no surprise he didn't lead 'the movement' anywhere but down. He was always a big government guy, and not a genius, though a decent person personally. It's really that simple. He wasn't in Texas and he wasn't as President.

Its not exactly true that Bush isn't conservative, he's just not fiscally conservative. Economically he is - straight up trickle down economic theory. Socially he is, very much so. Foreign policy wise, again conservative. He's just not opposed to big government, at least not enough to act on it. The judges he picked (on his own, he only got brow beaten on one) were great, and in the end people are going to be a lot more positive about him than they are now. It's just going to take time.
