Bloodbath Coming at the New York Times

Quagmire, JMF says. The first mass-firing of reporters in the paper's history is coming due to dismal sales and advertising.

By "mass," we seem to mean around 70 voluntary firees and 30 involuntary ones.

I didn't link this Vanderleun piece when it was published because I first thought the advice offered -- stop writing your newspapers to only serve 35% of your potential audience (and, by the way, the same 35% being competed for by every other news paper and network newscast) -- was a bit too easy and glib.

But he's right. Desperate times require desperate measures, and a few of these dying newspapers must, perish the thought, give a rigorous, management-enforced attempt at balanced, nonpartisan coverage a try, just to see how that might work out for them.

The question that needs to be asked:

Who's going to be left at the NYT?  By that, I mean what kind of reporters will be spared the cuts to continue writing?  Will they be even more hardcore leftists than the ones who got their severance or will they be somewhat of a balanced pool?

I hope the NYT takes this into consideration.  Even so, I still won't read them.

Nyah nyah!!!

2 "...give a rigorous, management-enforced attempt at balanced, nonpartisan coverage a try..."

Not according to Time Magazine. They want the writer involved, sharing his/her expertise with the reader. After all, they are the elite of society. Someone has to lead the ignorant masses and tell them want to think and who to vote for.

3 Firing leftys and only leaving leftys accomplishes what? The NYT still fails to acknowledge their problem of bias and putting their own political agenda over reporting. How much can they loose before they are forced to sell or change?

4 I vaguely recall that there was going to be some kind of minority stockholder petition or action regarding Pinch's reign.  Does anyone know a.  what the hell I'm talking about and b.  what happened?  If I recall, it's a moot point since there's a tiered stock system and the public share class does not actually have voting control.  It's still a fascinating stockholder derivative action question, can the managing shareholders continue to take actions that are driving the company into the ground without some type of accountability to the non-controlling stockholders?  I haven't practiced in that area in years so I really don't know.  It would be fun to try.

I read this morning that the business and national desks were being spared, for the most part, in a desperate attempt to compete with Murdoch's forthcoming WSJ revamp.

Which will fail.

8        Either way this is a WIN for the Conservatives.

Scenario1:  The NYT has nothing but radical leftists thus pushing them further down the toilet and eventually out of existence.

Scenario2:  The NYT severs it's ties with radical lefties and actually starts to COMMIT JOURNALISM.

Either way, fair reporting will come out of this, thus the actual education of voters continues and our Country rights itself.  No pun intended.

Hiring Jayson Blair would be a good way to boost circulation.

A newspaper that glorifies Marxists is now crumbling at the hands of the dialectic.

It is a wonderful thing to watch.

14 Anybody know how the Washington Times is doing financially or if they've had any layoffs? I did a bit of light googling, but didn't see anything. It would make an interesting case study to see how a conservative newspaper with national aspirations is doing compared to more liberal outlets across the country.

15 I liked the fact that Pan's Labyrinth didn't have the "fantasy is so much better than reality" subtext.  The fantasy world in it was pretty grim and horrifying.

16 The NY Times will not change because they cannot change.  They lack a sufficient level of self-awareness to even realize that they are the problem.  Instead, they will continue to rearrange the deck chairs and then try even harder to push their agenda.  "If only we can get people to SEE, then our readership will return."  In their minds, the failure arises not from what they're producing, but in the dimness of those who aren't enlightened enough to GET it.

I love the smell of schadenfreude in the morning...

The Business Judgment Rule probably precludes the shareholder derivative suit. That's my shortest answer.

The tiered system makes owning non-Sulzberger family shares a bad idea. Upon that revelation reaching fund managers, they sold. Thus did the Sulzberger family illustrate the churning of the American economy in which rich families become middle class within three generations.

someone (re #12): Totally agree with your assessment of "Pan's Labyrinth" (sorry, Slu, no offense). What a load of commie agitprop, and rather crudely executed to boot. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. Those who think the angels were on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War need to  familiarize themselves with the history of that conflict.

I'll offer a heretical view: in light of what was coming (the Second World War) it's a good thing for the free world that Franco and his Nationalist Coalition won the Spanish Civil War. The alternative would have been a Stalinist dictatorship on the French border, which could have had catastrophic results for Europe (and, by extension, the U.S.) especially during the period September 1939-June 1941 when Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were allies.

Franco was not a fascist. He was a Spanish-Catholic Nationalist. He used the fascists ("The Falange" party) to help him during the Civil War then packed them off to the Russian Front as members of the Division Azul for the express purpose of getting them killed.

I'm not saying that Franco was a good guy. He wasn't. But he was a Latin "caudillo" in the old mold. On a hierarchy of evil he was less evil than what would have ensued under the Stalinist dictatorship that would have ruled Spain in the event of Republican victory.

The funny thing is, it seems most mainstream liberals are arguing the opposite: to drop this "silly notion" of objectivity and go all-out liberal advocacy. They really believe that mainstream media is too restrained by the need to balance the liberal "truth" with conservative "fantasy."

I dont know if toning down its ideological advocacy would help the Times bottom line. It just may be too big to make money and needs to streamline. Like most papers, the current structure was set up in the pre-Internet days and a big restructuring was inevitable.

Seriously, thanks for the link. And you're right -- the observation is easy and glib, but it does have its merits. These layoffs won't solve the problem since, when the layoffs begin, the "protected" ones always ride out the first two or three. And the "protected" ones always know who they are. They've made a career out of getting "protected."

30 "Balance" is a myth, as is "fairness". The death of print papers is due to the lack of competition. A single, monolithic paper in every town has brought us to this point. Multiple papers, advocating for multiple constituencies kept the business fresh and gave the whole greater weight than the individuals. It's almost certainly too late to save in most instances, though.

31 Unfortunately, the only thing that daily major-market newspapers have to offer any more is the tactile pleasure of reading a hard-copy with your breakfast, or on the subway. Technology and their own idiotic liberal hubris has killed them.

MarkD,

My probably somewhat confused point being that  "outplacement services", "job retraining", and "lifelong learning" and "skill development"  were/are supposed to be the "cure-all"  for all those manufacturing/service jobs that were lost to the developing countries.

I guess these high-falutin' journalists are too special for this though.  It would require that they actually do something.

What's the Times up to now?  When I quit reading it in 2003 (with their horrible Iraqi Freedom stories, which followed up their Jayson Blair reporting scandal), it was a buck on the weekdays.  When I first moved to the City in the early '80's, the Times was a joy to read compared to the very tabloid Post, and its slightly notch above competitor, the News.  I was lucky enough to begin reading the Times while they still had Red Smith.  If you've never read him in the Sports section with your morning coffee, that's a shame.  Just like the Times is today.

And you're right about the internet.  But for me, sometimes it's three days before what I read on the 'net gets into the media.  Must be unionized fact-checkers.

58 Cute, but impractical - I loved the look of these Nike Duck shoes and completely bought into the name snow "joggers", as I go on long walk/jogs with my dog every day, and needed something suitable for the winter months. The first thing I noticed about this cheap Nike Duck shoe was that on the Zappos site, the only size available was 8/8.5, which I assumed meant the shoe ran in whole sizes only. When they arrived, the actual shoe was marked 8.5, and they were definitely too big, though I kept them because I figured I would just double-sock it to make them fit better. I wore them for a snow-walk through the state park nearby soon after getting them, and was disappointed at the ankle support, which is non-existent. The top of the boot ends just below the bottom of the calf, and the velcro closure doesn't fit around tight enough. I am NOT thin by any stretch of the imagination (size 14 dress), and at their tightest, the boots are too big around the ankle. The plus side of these is that even after an hour long hike in a foot of snow, my feet were dry and warm. Since then, however, I noticed that the patent is cracked in a few places, which might let wetness in. That said, if you are wanting these for style rather than functionality, they're great. I always get stares and nice compliments (and often Napolean Dynamite references) when wearing these, and I LOVE how they look with a pair of thick leggings underneath. Next winter, I will definitely buy a more functional pair of shoes with which I can be active in the snow and cold, but I'll never get rid of these adorable Nike Dunk discount shoes, all complaints aside.
