| Republican Rep Wants to Ban Playboy on Military PX's as "Pornography" Damaging to FamiliesAndrew Stuttaford rips him, and K-Lo defends: But I like the idea of the american military having nothing official to do with porn. We train our servicemen to protect and defend, in situations in which they often have to face perilous choices as who to protect and defend. Pornography is a grave indignity and degradation of the human person. If a soldier wants to view pornography, it's his right, but the U.S. military need not provide it to him.And continues... I honestly don't know that a congressional action is appropriate (I naturally hesitate), but I do know that I don't think that a congressman is a clown to broach the subject and offer a solution. Porn is a problem. Is Playboy less of one than the world wide web of hardcore porn we all have access to right now? Yes. But it's all dehumanizing. And we should talk about it. It's not just something people look at privately. It has consequences for honor and integrity. In short, Paul Broun, whom I don't know, is no clown for addressing the topic. I applaud him.The back and forth continues. Whether or not pornography is "degrading" as K-Lo insists seems pretty immaterial. Troops can decide for themselves whether or not they're in need of such degredation, and just because someone has the power to impose their notions of what is Good and Right on someone else sure the hell doesn't mean they ought to. Troops have signed up for enough damn hardship and deprivation without having to worry that Congressmen and busybodies, in the interests of assisting them to live hygenic and non-degrading lives, will make life even more of a hassle for them then it already is. These are largely men, and largely young men, separated from female company for months at a time. As much as some might wish they spent all their off-hours reading the Bible, they have the right to choose spicier fare on occasion. Incidentally, in warzones and when based in Muslim countries, where else can they get this sort of thing? I'm sure there's some of it available in the black market but why should they deal with the hassle, not to say very real danger, of leaving the base every time they might want to look at dirty pictures? Good God. As Stuttaford says, let's get rid of cigarettes at the PX too; those are unhealthy. And then we can get rid of alcohol too, and any sports magazines that carry bettors' lines; mustn't encourage gambling either, nor give such a thing official military approval. Better yet, let's just cut to the chase and mandate they spend all non-working hours sewing pillows for orphans. That should build sound moral character in our fighting men, who quite frankly are getting a little soft enjoying the voluptuary hedonism of military life. These Good-Time-Charlie joyboys have had it too good for too long. Comments1
Lopez jumped the shark a long time ago.

Exactly, Ace. Those service members who aren't spending all their waking time thinking about loving Jesus, killing the enemy, and loving Jesus should be corrected. By Congress.

The Congressman apparently is not a web surfer. Compared to some of the stuff out there, usually sent by email, Playboy is about as pornographic as Family Circle.

There was a lot of this going around after the Republicans took control of the House, and Senate a few years ago. Their first order of business was banning the sale of magazines like playboy from military exchanges, something wonky about online gambling, and spending money.
I'm proud to say, so long as they continue to pull stunts like this, I won't vote for them. I'll stay home, drink beer, read playboy, and play online slots. Just to piss them off. I need to summarize that in a bumper sticker somehow. Posted by: Steve at April 23, 2008 11:11 PM (S5+Q6) Posted by: Dr. Remulak at April 23, 2008 11:12 PM (3UOlN) 6
Of course. Nanny Broun wants to make sure the military is all good, pure, and Goody-goody. Instead of realizing they're big boys that can make their own decisions as to what's good for them, Nanny Broun intends to tell them what they should and shouldn't read.

No offense ladies, but I don't want any of you deciding what is or is not "dehumanizing" for me regarding the viewing of porn. And if you're concerned about the unclothed young ladies themselves, please limit your concerns to those who are underaged and therefore unable to decide for themselves.

Link Broun said he wants to bring the Defense Department into compliance with the intent of the 1997 law “so that taxpayers will not be footing the costs of distributing pornography.” Exchange officials noted that tax dollars are not used to procure magazines in the system’s largely self-funded operations. But Broun’s spokesman John Kennedy contended that taxpayer dollars are involved — “used to pay military salaries, so taxpayer money is, in effect, being used to buy these materials,” he said Posted by: Sean at April 23, 2008 11:23 PM (a7Ol6) 13
Pornography is a grave indignity and degradation of the human person Stop trying to give our servicemen prostate cancer, bitch. I'm amenable. We're all reasonable people. You have a choice. We can compromise. Provide porn. ---OR--- Provide whores. Because if you don't provide the porn or the whores our servicemen will wind up with STDs. In WWII they learned that the hard way. You want them in fighting shape you need to make sure they have clean whores. That's right. 1945. The Good Fight against the Evil Nazi kraut in Africa. Pax Americana. Greatest generation. Whores. Lopez is a frigging idiot. Those guys are putting their lives on the line. I believe pornography is degrading, but if a military guy wants to skim a Playboy, he should be able to do so.
I'm appalled at the congressman's "logic" on this - he's saying that since federal money is used to pay salaries, that gives the government the right to regulate what members of the military do with that money. So much for personal autonomy. Guys like that make the GOP no different from the Dems - they want to control your lives, but in a "conservative" way. I seem to remember the last time there was a push to ban pr0n on bases, a few military current and past argued here that there were legit reasons to do it. I wasn't really sold, but I've since hedged myself from going into full bore Anti-Nanny State rampage mode when it comes up.
I tend to view things like Entropy, given my background in history, most military forces have had prostitutes camped out nearby wherever they're at throughout most of history. If large numbers of respected military folks offer a compelling, legit reason for barring pr0n on base, fine, it should be considered, but I don't think that'll happen, and this is just obnoxious moralizing bullshit from Nanny Staters on our side. Wonderful, now I have to endure social engineering from what is putatively my own side. Great. This clown should spend some time on a real base with real servicemen sometime.
I can think of only one army in history that was supposedly squeaky clean and still able to fight it's way out of a paper bag: Cromwell's New Model Army (supposedly Puritan to a man). Even so, I'd bet old Ollie turned a blind eye to the shenanigans of his troops more than once. Newsflash: the job of going out and <gasp> hurting people and breaking things can be fairly dehumanizing. Having a reminder of why we're out there is a big motivator. Sure, for the older guys, pics of the wife and kids help, but for the average young soldier, sailor, airman or Marine, a glimpse of the wonderful Western tail he might be able to pull once he gets home is absolutely priceless. And to be honest, Playboy is pretty tame. Every unit has that one guy who has not merely a pr0n collection, but a database, and everybody who is inclined hits him up from time to time (at least that's how it always worked in my unit). That and the smaller private collections amassed by everyone else (often freely shared, especially on deployment) get everyone through. The ones buying Playboy at the PX are mostly 18-19 year old kids away from home for the first time. And don't get me started on the cigarettes... Pornography is a grave indignity and degradation of the human person Yeah I was disappointed to see K-Lo out herself as a complete prude. Her gushing over the Pope was hard enough to take, but this makes her almost unreadable. I hardly consider Playboy or even Penthouse to be porn - more like sexy nude modeling. And I don't see how allowing PXs to sell the same things you can get in an airport gift shop will drag down the military's image. If the military commanders thought Playboys in the PX was an issue, I'm sure they would have already banned it on their own. Entropy...moral difference? None I guess. Most guys in combat don't get a chance to peek at the neighbor's wife anyway.... Is there a mag with scantily clad or non-clad women that isn't a libzine? Really, in all the years I've shopped the BX, never have I seen a Playboy magazine. Since I'm the wife and maybe an uncool wife at that, I never looked either. But I'm angry as hell about his condescending attitude toward how we military families should be allowed to spend the paycheck. The majority of our party believes in being responsible for our actions and decisions, and this damn sight falls under letting our adults be adults. Someone might want to remind the bible-thumpers in Congress that the Torah allowed soldiers to rape desirable captives—so long as it was once per soldier on a lifetime basis, and he later took said captive home and married her properly. (It's in Deuteronomy somewhere.) This was seen as a bad thing to do, you understand, but the law made a necessary concession to human frailty under the circumstances.

From what I've heard from friends who have deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan there is a big difference between what is available from the exchanges and what can be purchased from the locals (including the ones who sell through market type things on the bases). The difference is, in the exchanges you can buy FHM, Stuff, etc. (a.k.a. AAFES porn). Playboy and Penthouse aren't allowed to be sold and the soldiers also technically aren't authorized to possess copies in the Muslim countries. From Haji? You can buy porn like you never even dreamed existed and never wanted to see. There is no limit to the level of raunchiness that can be bought from the locals. Since CongressWipes seem to get up to a lot of "monkey-business" while they are being paid by us to legislate, maybe we should control what they read we to get some decent value out of them, or at least get them to STFU? Or send them to Iraq, issue them M-16s, and tell them to go earn the same right to read whatever the fuck they want, like real men and women in the military (and everywhere else) already have! As I wrote at my blog, I could see this if it were Hustler, which truly makes the human body seem awfully ugly--just as I "get" (and actually agree with) the notion that the states shouldn't be running lotteries.
If it were up to me, though, the military would sell Hustler, too. In EVERY country we're in, goddammit. And Playboy/Penthouse? Both of my grandfathers subscribed to Playboy, back in the 1960s/70s. I used to share a subscription to Penthouse with a boyfriend in the 1980s. And compared to some of the hostile, woman-hating stuff one can find online, they are both very mild--by any measure. I have never fucking understood how pictures of two, or hopefully more, consenting adults fucking or of a woman willingly posing nude is degrading. For christ sake, sex is something that most adults either engage in or wish they were. The notion that looking at pictures of it is "degrading to the dignity of the human person" is a bunch of infantilizing bullshit from someone who evidently thinks the people in the military are 12 years old. Wow, your army is different than ours. In the Canadian army, in basic training, I remember being ordered to purchase pornography from the "Canex" and we had to present it for inspection. One soldier claimed not to masturbate. For which he was ordered to sit on his locker while his folly was discussed by the instructors.
The soldier stuck to his guns though. He would not admit to his own prostrate cancer prevention plan. Poor bugger. Posted by: Christoph at April 24, 2008 02:11 AM (hawOV) 66
Christoph, I remember being disgusted with my squad leader, who insisted that each private be given "personal time" in the 8 man barracks room we shared... he made clear what for. We were forward deployed, and after about a month, I realized this Sergeant was extremely wise. He earned the bronze star in Iraq, btw.
So while our civilian leadership can be douchey as hell, don't think the enlisted US Army itself is puritanical. I don't think great soldiers necessarily line up well with church ideals (which is what this amounts to). Audie Murphy was a lousy person in many respects, but a hero our nation needed. The idea that congress can decide what soldier spend their money on... that somehow a soldier's pay isn't his property, is SO FUCKING OFFENSIVE to me. It is absolutely reprehensible and irresponsible. I've never bought a Playboy in my life, but that shit is not degrading to women, if anything, I don't think it always crosses the line into pornography. It's clearly attempting to be artistic as well as sexually gratifying in a tame way. If any display of a naked women is degrading to you, you are a misogynistic moron. While I don't care what the PX sells, they need to sell what the soldiers want to buy. Sex is part of a young man's life. He should be able to expect some dignity and privacy and respect for his private decisions. Nobody gets to check who takes that Hustler home (each congressional office receives one each month as a running joke). Nobody gets to see what movies and magazines and websites each congressman enjoys. And we know that there are a lot of perverts in congress, so I know they'd fight us learning what they spend their government paychecks on. They need to either put up or shut up. I'm not sure that servicemember (suddenly, that sounds dirty) should be pressured into wacking off; after all, some people do think it's morally perilous to do so (I've never understood that, but whatever). They certainly shouldn't be prevented, however, from doing so. I hope to Gosh the females are able to buy muscle massagers from the PXs . . . because I'll betcha anything they can't get THOSE on the middle eastern/central Asian black market. Interestingly, when I left Iraq, they made us toss all porn into an amnesty box prior to the Customs inspection saying that it was unauthorized in theater. So I pitched a few DVDs, but I left with my HARD DRIVE INTACT! Of course, I don't recall them saying anything on the way in.
This concept is utterly assinine, and pisses me off every time it's brought up. Do you fucking mind that I spend a few tender moments with myself, some Jergens, and Club International...every chance I get? Guess what? We don't get to go to the mall or the movies when we're in Iraq. There isn't much to do during down time, and the sweet release of self love is a source of comfort and joy that all servicemen relish. On one of my cruises the CO said we had to do a 'porn search' in the crew's spaces. Most of the wardroom were pretty thorough, but I told my guys, "I ain't gonna look hard; but if I can find it, it's mine." Needless to say, I now have the prostate of a 16 year old. Although given the way you look, that may be a pretty tall order.
I was trying not to go there, but fuck it. I can't disagree. KJ Lopez looks like exactly the kind of woman who doesn't think anyone should look at pictures of naked women who are attractive (even if they are pumped full of silicone, tanned, shaved, waxed, and Photoshopped to look that way). Hard to say who has it worse, her husband or the husband of the proud hectoring nag who wrote the MSNBC column discussed here a couple days ago. Neither of them would know from "degrading" if it came in their hair and then wiped up on the drapes. And I haven't looked at a Playboy in a few years, or at a Penthouse or Hustler in probably 15-20 years, so don't really have a dog in this fight, but I do remember seeing them at the AAFES BXes when I was a kid -- and I understand that the thumper revolution in the 90s may have put an end to at least some of that. But this Congressman and K-Lopez can both go piss up a fucking rope as far as I'm concerned. Heaven forbid they ever get a look at the nose of a WWII bomber, for shit's sake. Seems the Congresscritter and Ms. Lopez need to learn a bit about the law, since a number have consistently ruled that the likes of Playboy are not porn. And about medicine, which has recently concluded that frequent [male] masturbation is healthy. And about public attitudes toward sex, which have altered since the prissy MacArthur insisted the new Japanese Constitution forbid depiction of genitalia.

Then They got rid of those a few years later while I was at Ft. Campbell. Who can go back to Playboy after looking at burn victims, men and women shitting in diapers, and amputees in Nugget? The truth of the matter is Playboy, Penthouse and Hustler were swept off the exchange shelves years ago because someone didnt like that Children might see them in the checkout lines. The best you can get in a PX these days is Maxim or FHM which by the way fly off the shelves of the PX's in theater. As I said in an email to the sainted Ms Lopez (whom no one is asking to pose nude) its bad enough that a 20 year old PFC cant by a beer at the EM club, its ridiculous that he cant go to the PX and by a spank mag. As far as pron in theater goes, one of the tennants of GEN ORDER # 1 is no Pronogaraphy of any kind allowed. Having spent 12 months in the balmy breezes of Baghdad, I can tell you that GEN ORDER # 1 is an abject failure. I actually managed to get my wife to mail me "selected magazines" while I was deployed. This is what I sent to Lopez and Stuttaford: Andrew, Kathryn: Couldn't another factor in Congressman Broun's decision to push this be the fact that DOD isn't complying with established law? The original provision was put into the 1997 Defense Authorization Act -- it's been the law for over 10 years. It may or may not be a dumb law (I was a Hill staffer when it was first enacted and remember thinking that it was kind of silly, but there was no real need to stock the magazines in the PX). But there is that clause in Article I, Section 8, saying that Congress "shall make all rules for the government of the land and naval forces," and if it's the law, DOD should follow it.Posted by: Simon Oliver Lockwood at April 24, 2008 09:32 AM (PaV2r) 99

I'm gonna go ahead and buck the trend here, slightly. First off, I think porn is a rather bad thing, for reasons I won't bore you with. That said, banning it from military bases is trying to shovel food up the dog's ass. Right idea, wrong spot, for all the reasons Ace laid out. The only reason this ever comes up is that military bases are the one area where the federal gov't's authoritah is clear and unobstructed. In all frankness, I'd like to see a world where fiddling douchebags didn't try to sell me videos of drunken idiots dropping their tops when all I want to do is watch Scrubs. I'd like to see a world that wasn't full of crusty magazines full of Over 18, We Swear (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), or all the irritating lameness that springs therefrom, from Girls Next Door to the Kinky Kelly and the Sexy Studs worldwide. And yeah, I'm probably alone here on that. And I'm full aware that the federal government is the worst vehicle imaginable for making that happen, or state governments for that matter. But listening to some of you bring the Pope into this for reasons I can't fathom (is Lopez supposed to not be excited about the visit? Is that what's expected of the cool kids?), I wonder if we're engaging in knee-jerk anti-puritanism. Posted by: Andrew the Noisy at April 24, 2008 09:52 AM (c767D) 102

My experience is that the young troops aren't reading Playboy or Penthouse. They are reading Maxim and FHM. If they need something more risque, they'll get it online (hopefully, not on a government computer). To them, Playboy is something that their dad reads. So, this bill, other than being a social-con overreach, is a complete waste of time. Congressman Broun needs to get a life. Posted by: Blackjack at April 24, 2008 10:03 AM (miOAD) 105
No, Andrew, you're not alone. I don't see where any thoughtful person would conclude pr0n is pr0tected by the First Amendment. And if pr0n were much more difficult to acquire, we would be much better off as a society. (I am thinking of last week's South Park, where Randy Marsh has become so jaded by the cornucopia of perversion available on the net that he "just can't go back to Playboy.")

It got me to thinking: Last time I went to the nudie bar, I left at midnight without a penny in my pocket, only half buzzed because the drinks were $8.00 apiece and I was trying to slowplay the booze in order to acquire more lap dances, hungry because I didn't have any money to go to IHOP for breakfast, and "Dakota" had enough money in her garter to pay for her tuition for the next semester, not an insignificant sum of it having recently belonged to me. the Torah allowed soldiers to rape desirable captives—so long as it was once per soldier on a lifetime basis, and he later took said captive home and married her properly. (It's in Deuteronomy somewhere.)
Well that's a creative interpretation, actually what it says is "if you rape some woman in battle you must take her home and make her your wife, and cannot go out and find another." It doesn't condone rape or allow it, it forces marriage, the alternative practice at the time was "rape every woman you meet in the enemy camp." Funky chicken: I don't think the people at Blowfish (SF-based sex toy company) sell blow-up dolls, but I'm sure they could tell you who the more reputable suppliers are.
There's also the Pleasure Chest in Los Angeles (actually, I think it's in West Hollywood, which is a city of its own--area code 323, IIRC). They've got good stuff, mostly, but they do carry some "gag gift" items--including, several years ago, blow-up dolls in the shape of SHEEP. (Both black and white, of course.) The word "prostrate" does mean "facing down," but that part of the definition appears less prominently than it does for the term "prone" [see Webster's 10]. So some people probably read the word as simply meaning the person is lying down, which could make it synonymous to "supine" in some people's minds. That does strike me as an imprecise usage, however. Posted by: Attila Girl at April 24, 2008 04:35 PM (Hgnbj) 135

One of the first rules of juicy couture outlet journalism of any kind is that you must remain louis vuitton handbags. You can't get emotionally wrapped up in the people you talk to, because it will generally affect your coverage in a negative fashion, and it can bring your credibility into question in chanel handbags. However, there are those rare people you meet along the way who make objectivity an impossible exercise. Former USC and current Tennessee Titans running back Stafon Johnson(notes) is one of those people. I first interviewed Johnson for the Washington Post before the draft, after I did a piece on Travelle Gaines, his personal trainer. When I talked to Johnson in early March, he was about six months removed from the terrible accident that almost claimed his life. On September 28, Johnson was lifting weights at the USC facility, and a barbell with 275 pounds stacked on it slipped. The ugg boots came down and crushed his larynx, and Johnson had to undergo emergency surgery. He had a breathing tube through most of October, and doctors told him that he could have died had his neck muscles not been so well-developed. Few expected Johnson to make a comeback that included the NFL, but Johnson started working with Gaines, got his strength back, and got on with the chanel as an undrafted free agent. Johnson was making tracks in his first preseason game on Saturday night against the Seattle Seahawks, gaining 23 yards on three carries, until his leather handbags was trapped underneath him on a swing pass at the end of the third quarter. Johnson went down and stayed down as the cart came out to take him off the field. Johnson's right leg was placed in an air cast, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll (who coached Johnson at USC) came out to talk to the young man. The entire Titans team came out on the field to pray as Johnson was loaded onto the cart. Everyone knew what was at stake, and what Johnson had gone through to get there."I was just so sorry to see Stafon get hurt," juicy couture said after the game. "This was a guy that had to undergo so much physical pressure and mental pressure. It looked bad, and he was very broken up by it. I know that (Tennessee coach) Jeff (Fisher) thinks the world of Stafon and if anybody can get back, he can."He's an absolute warrior. He will do it. He's done it before under worse circumstances, and this will be a challenge for him."Initial reports indicate that Johnson may have a dislocated ankle, which would likely mean the end of his 2010 season. Whatever the final diagnosis may be, it was a heart-wrenching moment for those who have been so impressed with the strength and courage Johnson has displayed during his amazing comeback."I knew I had to do it to get to where I wanted to get to ... I wasn't 100 percent, but I will compete against anyone and everyone, because that's how I am," Johnson told me in ralph lauren about his recovery. "That's how desperate I am to be great."This is one of the good guys. He deserves to grace a football field again. Please think good thoughts for him if you can.

Just a few nike air max
24-7 days ago Sneaker News showed you an upcoming colorway of the Nike Air
Max Modular 98 SI. Not to be mixed up with Modular 95 SI, which shares a similar
upper design, the Modular 98 cheap
airmax 90s combines the Air Classic BW and the Tuned Air cushioned Air Max
Plus/98/TN. This new sample colorway of white, black, silver, and volt, features
a white upper layer with a white nike air max
180 toe-cap as well as a volt-colored gradient scheme on the mesh layer. The
Air Unit is composed of Tuned Air and is contained in a black-colored housing.
These are a sample colorway so a release is as likely as a scrap, so here’s your
chance to own this sample pair (at a very reasonable price) from mtcdiscount on
eBay.
