And somehow, the NYT online has seen fit to publish an Iraq article that doesn't bash the US military, Bush, or Maliki. I'm thinking Michael Gordon's career will be a short-lived one with the Times, since he obviously is a retard incapable of making the connection between battlefield pigeon-killing and the inevitable PTSD rampages by war-weary vets suffering from the atrocities they visited upon little brown people and the birds they love. As the discussions continued, one stocky Iraqi soldier stepped forward and announced that he was not afraid of the fighters from Jaysh al-Madhi —or JAM as it is called by American military — regardless of the threats. “In case I see a bad guy I will not arrest him,” the Iraqi soldier said through an American military interpreter. “I will kill him immediately to get revenge for my guys who were lost.”

Ace, I feel bound to observe that I may have overestimated your military acumen. It now appears that in fact you might not be able to recognize your hairy ass from a cocanut when it comes to urban military tactics,
the capabilities of pigeons & the status & social utility of one Michael Gordon, alleged
journalist employed in the "Throw Sop to the Administration" Department of the New York Times.
In that order:
[1] If youd actually have read the article with even a minimal degree of skepticism
you would see lots of signs that the Iraqui troops were playing the two
young American lieutenants.
Three examples, the third of which I cite separately under heading [2].
[A] Our guys were trying to get the Iraqi guys to "man up" on
taking control of an alley by offering to take them to the entrance & watch
over them for a bit until the Iraqis were already committed & exposed to
any unknown hazards, but shaming them for being skeered of alley-dwelling
boogymen & holding their hands to the entrance. So what does the Iraqi Lt
come up with? In essence he comes back with this: "Okay then you paternalist occupying pricks: We are NOT
a bunch of primitive ignorant wimps irrationally frightened that an alley may
hold a boogy man - rather we are actually sophisticated & prudent
street-savvy tacticians who have obtained intelligence that tells us that in
fact this particular alley is extensively booby trapped such that taking it
down as you counsel will lead to certain death of some of our troops". The
said reference to "intelligence" coming as complete news to our guys,
given the Iraqi Lt made absolutely no mention of it in the planning stages of
the operation back at the US command post & just happened to raise it when
the US platoon was about to bug off after holding the Iraqi soldiers peepees to
get them to the mouth of the alley. The bottom line was the same either way:
"Hey Yankee hotshots: If you want this alley so bad then you're welcome to
it but we are not going in."
[B] Lt Bowen talked a good show about how we've put our booted feet down &
told the Iraqi forces we're not going in: but then look at where Lt Dudek took
his troopers: right out into a Sadr city street fully exposed. And why? Because
the Iraqi Lt said his troopers were getting these unexpected calls from locals
who were complete strangers to them on their cellphones warning them of
reprisals & had no clue on how their numbers came to be known to the
locals.
Now what do you think the chances are of a community of Sadrist civilians
hosting or being occupied by Mahdi militiamen being able to guess correctly the
personalized cellphone numbers of that particular Iraqi platoon? How about this
scenario:
"Yo, Abu whassup? Its Ali - Ali Hussein - yes that Ali Hussein. Yeah yeah
there is no god but Allah & Mohamed is his messenger right back at you
pards. Look Abu - Im kinda caught up in this situation here - I hunkered down
just outside the northeast entrance near the intersection of Neverending
Reprisal Avenue & Infinite Lustful Virgins Street & I'm with a bunch of
our guys & theres a couple of platoons of Imperial Storm Troopers along
with us & the Evil Empire honchos are trying to talk my boss into putting
on a show -What kind of show? Well, as a matter of fact, taking down your alley
- no really Abu, I mean it. Look, does a camel shit in the desert? Anyway, I
think my fearless leader's tank is getting a little low on cock & bull to
put them off so need a solid from you, Abu: I want you should call me back in a
minute or two & issue me a reprisal threat & I want you to call some of
the other hommes with me & do the same. Issue a threat of reprisal.
Reprisal. How in the name of all thats holy in Mesopotamia should I know. Okay gimme a moment: I got

[3] Michael Gordon is several decades past being a new face at The Times. He is a fiftish,
fattish & fatuous war correspondency specialist who has found a niche working his way out of news editor Bill Keller's doghouse for making the paper look like fishwrap going along with Judy
Miller's years of reporting WMD in Iraq bullshit as she fucked her way through the expeditionary search team.
Every major deadtree daily has at least a few Michael Gordons on staff to serve as stenographers to government drivel, whether the government be city, state or nationwide - & to help the paper try to maintain enough of a relationship with that government so it gets its fair share of deliberate leaks & advertising dollars [the latter being the key] & isn't blowing its profit margin on lawyers in trying to keep its reporters out of jail for not naming their sources on government corruption stories.
Judy Miller is such a pathetic joke: She actually got her professional assets put behind bars for almost 3 months for refusing to name a government source who pushed a false leak on her The Times found so lame - so obviously a convenient leak - so clearly a revenge smear - it declined to report it. But compared to Gordon, she's a star.
With Gordon, it has come down to his current situation of being lent out for a
"ridealong" like a circus clown being lent out to children's birthday parties - in the vague hope that maybe at least his stories might keep some of the mook people with their minimum daily
regimin of lead contaminents & "You am here" reportage. Oh, & Ace: while you were fawning all over Gordon's supposed purity & encourage, did you happen notice? A whole lot
of talking & hemming & hawing & "why I oughttas" & yet the amount of ACTION was quite readily measurable at zero - plus or minus zero.
Now of course at that rate, a military strategist would forecast the Iraqi troops to have
effectively disbanded all Sadrist supporting militia in Sadr city around....oh
2108. So there's this: that definitely means McCain is 100% right on how long this is going to take.
But with a little assistance from Petraeus' troops, they should be able to cut the time down by 3 decades at least, likely 4, maybe 5, and with at worst a minimal increase in the length of the line indicating "Number of American lives al Qaeda Classic desires to cause the death of [Well, there really isn't much room above
"all"], and a somewhat higher risk of increase in grid quantifying the intensity of intrasectarian competition, which as a matter of course merits
watching within the current post-Surge phase of "Waiting for an unknown period of time while keeping an eye out for a sign that we expect to recognize as a sign when it comes out but we don't know at this time what it might look like".
It almost makes one long for the good old days of "the Surge is working" - especially since we now know the real Bush-Cheney administration view is that we are in Iraq to fight a proxy war against Iran, or Return of the Domino Theory. It appears possible that American conservatives are doomed to revisit the legend of "We Never Really Lost Nam - Liberals & Defeatocrats Turned Traitor" until there's some convergence of the stars & Sunspots & the tides & we win one of these misbegotten fiascos [whereas what conservatives should really do is pin all the blame on LBJ & call squarseezies & get back to nominating Ron Pauls].

1) You imagine that most I.A. soldiers hate the Occupying Oppressor Meanie US, are in with the militias, and are, let's face it, cowards.
2) Pigeons are too stupid to be used in warfare (although they have been throughout modern history -- some fascinating pigeon-based technology in naval warfare in WWII, for instance).
3) Michael Gordon is fat and a Bush shill. (So...what, you're asserting that he's Beauchamping this incident? Really? If he were, don't you think he would've made the US-Iraqi relationship seem like it was working much better?)

And that's why you can't build an effective army in a few months or even a year or two. It takes YEARS to teach those "lower level" guys how to do their job. You can get a decent enough rifle-man after basic training and advanced infantry training. That guy will be effective with the proper leadership. But his boss (the sgt.) and his boss (the lieutenant) require more time and experience.
Before 2003, those guys hardly existed in the Iraqi army*. Now a new army is being built. It takes time.
*Soviet model. Less emphasis on NCOs, more on senior officers. (this is a big over simplification but I'm not going to write 20 paragraphs here).
