UK Bus Driver Kicks Passengers Off Bus...So He Can Pray! [Nice Deb]

I'm not sure this story is a good idea so soon after the Fitna flap that had Ace so exercised, but maybe this could act as a good test post. There is nothing wrong with objecting to unreasonable intrusions of religion in public life, and that's what, IMHO this is:

The white Islamic convert rolled out his prayer mat in the aisle and knelt on the floor facing Mecca.

Passengers watched in amazement as he held out his palms towards the sky, bowed his head and began to chant.

One guy whipped out his cell phone to videotape the special moment from outside the bus. The video can be viewed at The Sun Online.

“Eventually everyone started complaining. One woman said, ‘What the hell are you doing? I’m going to be late for work’.”

After a few minutes the driver calmly got up, opened the doors and asked everyone back on board.

But when the already unnerved passengers saw the driver’s rucksack on the floor, they refused to get back on.

“One chap said, ‘I’m not getting on there now’".

“An elderly couple also looked really confused and worried.

“After seeing that no-one wanted to get on he drove off and we all waited until the next bus came about 20 minutes later. I was left totally stunned. It made me not want to get on a bus again.”

Perhaps they were being paranoid. But as one person said in the comment section:

“you cant fault anyone for not wanting to get back on after the rucksack came out - the London bombings are still very much with the general public and it is a legitimate concern that we all have to live with. The world IS a much different place post 9-11/7-7…”

Also, judging from the comments, people would very much like to see this bus driver “sacked“.

I totally agree.

6 Stopping five times a day for 20 minutes just isn't compatible with some occupations.

I know we here in the West don't like religious discrimination, but I think this falls under the "are you capable of performing the tasks listed" column.

Yes, the driver should be fired, because they did not do what they were hired to do - drive, and provide a service at some standard of reliability.

And yeah, the rucksack fear was not entirely unreasonable, especially given the circumstances, but no doubt some will portray it as unreasonable - c'est la guerre.

I was ready to call it a fake as soon as I heard it too. This was a tolerancetest. It doesn'tsound as well done as the "Flying Imams" buta public performance piece nonetheless.
For that matter, the Muhammad Cartoons had the same purpose.
I wonder if we are entering a new"twobrotherspinching each other in the backseat of the family sedan" phase?

14 This is a HUGE deal. Like the Flying Imams and airline security, the willingness of passengers to come forward, this is an effort to implementthe Saudi (among others) daily planner where everything comes to a halt at prayer time. Which is just another reasonable accomodation on the UK's path to becoming Afghanistan with nicer buildings.

No, I was trying to link to Aces post about deleting his Fitna post. But I've already done that in the main post, now.

It was dr. akim ullshitbay's "mooslime" comment, that I was addressing.

I posted that story because I thought the bus driver's behavior was outrageous, not to insult all Muslims.

ullshitbay may be facing the ban hammer for that.

17 This one's pretty simple, folks:

1.) This is a ridiculous act on the part of the driver, assuming it's not some kinda hoax. Obviously he should be fired. Look, a bus driver is paid to drive the damn bus in a timely fashion. Simple as that.

2.) Any religious tolerance arguments made on behalf of this guy (not around here obviously) are ridiculous. Again: he's a fucking bus driver. If I get on the bus I expect to get to where I'm going in a timely fashion without having to stop for 20 minutes mid-trip.

3.) There isn't much else to say. Stupid generalizations about the nature of Islam or Muslims are unnecessary. Secure that shit, morons.

I don't even know what to say. Whenever something like this comes up, I am reminded of the bitter arguments regarding waitressing that used to rage in the Evangelical Christian circles in which I was raised. The issue was serving alcohol and whether or not it was acceptable to take a job at a restaurant if you were expected to serve drinks. The solution for those who felt they could not? Do not work there. There was no expectation that the circumstances would be altered to fit the restrictions of the worker's faith. Instead, if certain avenues of employment were unavailable, it was seen as a sacrifice that one should be happy to make in order to maintain ones mores.

Ahem. Not that I have a strong opinion regarding this or anything.

Posted by: alexthechick at March 30, 2008 12:07 AM (jWNHD)

51 I'm always hesitant to trust the British press, so I preface this with a big, fat "if this is true." That said:

The driver should be sacked. Immediately.

Stopping a bus for any non-critical reason for 20 minutes is simply beyond the pale. Period. I don't care if he had to pray, read Tarot cards, or call the NKOTB 1-900 hotline. It's not done. Unless the weather, mechanical condition of the bus, or other factors step in, that bus should keep on rolling. People depend on it, and if he's not willing to step up, then he should find employment elsewhere.

As to the sack (again with the if), then yes, the passengers should've stayed off. I certainly would not have jumped back on after a bus driver was acting erratically in any case. Much less so after the 7/7 bombings, with a person leaving a sack on the middle of a a bus for no apparent reason. And, quite frankly, even less so considering the driver has just made a big showing of his religion. Yes, I realize it's not the typical MO of a suicide bomber to do so before pulling the trigger, but it's not unheard of for one to pray right before popping the cap and pushing the button, and this combined with leaving something right in the middle of a bus does not sit well. At all.

Yeah, I cringe at the idea of religious discrimination. I'm a Mormon, I've encountered it, and I would hate to see it put on somebody else. But I'm also not going to stake my life on a guy who is a) acting oddly b) making a big show of a being a more extremist adherent to a particular religion, the more extreme adherents of which have carried out fatal bombings against very similar targets within recent memory c) leaves a package on the middle of the bus. Period. I've taken my life into my own hands using the bus system in South America many times - and this is not a risk I would take.

Muslims have got to realize that the West is the West. If they want to try and change it and convince others to join their religion, fine. It's a free market of ideas. But don't cram it down our throats.

Posted by: Guy in Utah at March 30, 2008 12:08 AM (V3WTz)

52 I hate to follow someone OT, but let me address the fighting around Basra for a minute. I'm sure I don't have to explain to all the tactical and operational geniuses on the liberal side what "economy of force" means to the military mind.
I mean, it is beyond comprehension that perhaps the IA was focusing on the bigger near term threat of AQI up north and fighting them while using the minimal force necessary to contain the Shia militia in the south. That's just crazy talk.
And of course, now that the effort against AQI in the north is well in hand, there is just no effin' way they may have shifted their efforts to the Shia militia in the south. Couldn't be that could it.
Look, no force is ever as large or as well equipped or as well trained as the commander would like. That's just life. So, you fight using an allocation of your resources (men, material, space, money and that ever so precious time) that you think will best suit your needs. It's kinda like a budget. Morons have no idea what a budget is but our oh so smart liberal friends will explain it to the slower ones if you ask.

58 This bus driver story reminds me of an incident that happened to me back in 1991, when my ship pulled into Jebel Ali in the UAE to pick up stores. A couple of us rented a car and headed into the lovely city of Abu Dhabi to get lunch and shop for gold trinkets for our [now known to be completely unfaithful whore] wives.
We picked what looked like a classy restaurant, went in, and ordered our grub from a smartly dressed waiter who seemed the very epitome of customer service. The food was ready, and placed on a cart to be brought out to us,just as thelocal muezzin made the call to prayer from the mineret from the mosque next to the restaurant. Before our food could be broughtto us, everyone one in the restaurant, customers and staff, disappeared to go pray.
So, we were forced to collect our own food from the cart to our table. Weate in silence, andwhen the waiter came back and gave us the check, none of us even had to think about whether we would leave a tip. We wouldn't, of course, and we didn't.
Not exactly a tale on par with the famous anecdote about General Sir Charles Napier's handling of the practice of suttee in India, but sort of analogous. The restaurant staff had their culteral practice of bolting to go pray in the middle of performing their job, and we had our own culteral practice to not tip.
True, if boring, story, which shouldn't be offensive, even to The Perpetually AggrievedTM.

I thought it was up to four now but I might be wrong about that. There was a recent bout of body parts being dumped on the highway up here but they caught the guy pretty fast. The cops found the woman's hands in the walls of the house he was renting and, of course, the neighbors were all "but he was so nice and quiet, we had no idea!" I did feel bad for the landlords though, I don't think the security deposit is going to cover the cops knocking holes in the walls.

Dang. Remind me to avoid whatever type of litigation that client was involved in. I'm going to assume family or criminal.

Oh, no, nothing like that. It was your nice, basic, run of the mill civil suit for an automobile accident. It's just that, well, I guess certain baseline assumptions that I have for how one should dress for court aren't necessarily shared by the rest of the public.

85 I had a story about the not-really-prospective employee that tried to tattoo his name on his forehead by looking in the mirror, but stopped halfway through when he realized it was backwards.

But that story of alexthechick's has, well, more that I want to think about in it than my story.

It's trenchant, gritty, hip. It has a sort of edgy charm to it. And the imagined changing room sex. But mostly the imagined changing room sex.

But somehow we changed the subject to body parts... which is like 3 parts Dexter, 2 parts CSI and 1 part Perry Mason. Over a shot of ice, shaken, with a lemon slice.

Easy solution: tattoo a big X over the messed-up part, then use the remaining space to write "TARD".

My first thought, too. Then I thought he's a convert and may be trying to set up a discrimination claim, which would actually pay in the UK. Either way, his actions are entirely inappropriate within the scope of his job and he ought to be fired for staging his little trick. I hope this backfires on him.

98 Fresh #49 " it is difficult to fire someone on a British payroll,"

Any senior bureaucrat worth his salary should be able to find a work-around for that, like transferring this jihadi asswipe into some non-driving, non-schedule-meeting position, or requiring him to re-complete the driver training course, at trainee wages, as many times as it takes for him to either quit or retire, or sending him on an unpaid fact-finding tour to durkadurkastan.

Work in retail in a strip-mall some time. Don't even hang a Help Wanted sign in the window; it won't matter, this will keep happening anyway. Non-give-a-shit no-hopers are constantly showing up, with babies on their hips, cracking gum, pants hanging off their asses, speaking either in Ebonics or in Hillbillyese, etc etc etc, asking the counter-moron if we want to hire them, getting unsurprisingly turned down, THEN INSTANTLY producing their "prospect sheet" or whatever it's called, from the employment commission, and asking for a signature. It's all about eligibility for unemployment comp, doncha know?
We were under orders to never sign those, but word evidently never got around, because these losers never did stop showing up.

I'm in a business where we work a lot of production Saturdays (you're paid overtime), and once Bad Hire #105031 decided he'd had enough of that, he "converted" to 7th Day Adventist, and said he couldn't work Saturdays, and we couldn't count those as absences. He won in court, of course.

105 My first job was at White Castle, what an education in the depravity of humanity that was! My favorite job seeker was the barefoot lady who approached the counter with her toothbrush in hand, which she would use in between sentences. The best part was when she told my boss that she used to work for White Castle and was therefore experienced. When my boss asked which store she'd worked at, she replied with the name of a city that did'nt have a WC in it. When he pressed her on that fact, she replied "Well, I worked for a bank there, it's almost the same as WC." The boss turned nine shades of red trying to hold in his laughter. I had to go tothe walk-in cooler so I could double over.
