I think our Dutch friends took some of the social democrat stuff too far and it hurt the country quite a bit. Having said that, I really liked the limited time I spent there and most of the people. Many of the folks were a lot more conservative than you would think. My battle buddy and I had the pleasure of dating twins from Amsterdam. Surprisingly difficult to get into their pants. I think that was a holdover from the socially conservative Puritan days. Not everyone there spends all day smoking hash.

I think a big part of the problem is that post-war Europe recoiled so far from the horrors of war and made a good faith effort to use diplomacy and respect to resolve conflict that they forget that sometimes, other folks won't be using good faith in return.

I actually don't quite think it is oil. Oil is certainly why we put up with so much shit from middle eastern nations, but I think European (and to a lesser extent, American) post-colonial guilt has more to do with it in terms of immigration and multi culti tolerance. We tend to be very tolerant of any culture that comes here, oil or no (see Mexico and southern California), but islamists are much more aggressive about taking advantage of that tolerance than most other immigrant communities.
