| McCain's Speech on Foreign Policy/Open ThreadI'm going to see if I can track down a copy of the written speech because it's pretty damn good. So far he's simply talked about how awful war is -- and damn eloquently, I have to say. In political terms, it's hard to peg McCain as a "warmonger" given his personal experience with war, and the serious, adult noting of the horrors of it. In related news, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton once read a bumper sticker reading, "War is dangerous for people and trees and other living things." Ugh. Ending "torture" of terrorists. Closing Guantanamo. Risks of global warming have no borders. Sometimes McCain almost lets me forget what a preening buffoon he is.Comments1

Wait -- Maverick said these things in his speech, right? It's impossible to tell these days. About the only plus with McAmnesty is that he isn't, as far as we know, a race warrior -- though honestly, he might as well be. Posted by: someone at March 26, 2008 12:24 PM (2z2WN) 2

I dunno, I mean, what other options would President McCain have with Gitmo's prisonsers? He wouldn't set them free. Would he set up some new offshore prison with the same rules, as a kind of shell game? Would he make sure they got civilian trials? (Maybe he'd have them summarily executed!!!!11!one!!!exclamtion!) Anyway, does he offer an actual alternative? I *think* he's just posturing without intending to change anything. Posted by: Some Guy at March 26, 2008 12:28 PM (lPxkl) 6
Watching the speech as I type... This guy is a piece of work. I've no doubt that he'll keep up the good fight in the Iraq, but I don't think he'll do much to the governments in the middle east who support terror and creeping shari'a. He's going to befriend the Palestinians and the Syrians and the Turks and the Saudi's. He'll ignore the "kill the jews" garbage that these rabid animals spew everyday on the teevee. In the end, he'll do to Israel what Obama did to his own grandmama. So yes... we'll stay in Iraq and Afganistan... but the Mexicans will be colonizing throughout the south from the moment he's sworn in and there won't be a damn thing we can do about it. Sad, considering his own home state is practically a war zone itself. At that's the good candidate... just think about how much worse it's going to be if a Dem wins: total Dhimmitude. UGH!!!!!

Some Guy, I disagree. He's been unambiguous about closing Guantanamo Bay and short-circuiting the military commissions. That's a problem for me.

Rush is going to have a field day with this one. I'm turning him on now. So while the Dems are on the verge of an all out civil war, the Republicans are finally in a position to waltz into the White House and THIS is who we're sending. It's disgusting! I cannot believe that my Republican brothers and sisters have done this to our great country. This really is Rome, and the Muslim hordes are on their way in and all we can worry about is global "warming", gay marriage, and the right to kill babies. We deserve whatever we get.

Because likely you've got a chance of voting for a conservative congressmen and possibly senator, that would be important to have voted for. People talking about staying home because they don't want to vote for McAmnesty are really going to cause a problem. I sensed a man ready to yield more and more sovereignty to the greater good whenever he grappled with anything other than the WoT. Not good and not surprising. Is he more enamored with globalism than Clinton or Obama? Probably not, but that is damning with faint praise. I'm just as disenchanted with him now as I was before his speech and recognize we'll probably have a moderate Democrat versus a socialist in the White House. But we've known that already.
On a stylistic front, I felt like I was listening to Johnny "Two Times" McCain. Quite a few lines, or parts of them anyway, were eloquently delivered. Twice. Except for the Democrat infighting that is exposing the poison of victimology so embedded on the Left, I'm finding this term's election possibilities demoralizing. McCain's speech really didn't change my preconceived conclusions one bit. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at March 26, 2008 01:07 PM (Uy68a) 24
About our only hope as conservatives may be for Dem Armageddon to collapse them out of Congress. But of course, Maverick would probably take that as a mandate for ramming amnesty, carbon taxes, and all that shit through.

Bleh: I agree that the key to solving so many of our troubles is energy independence. Unfortunately, McCain is like all the rest. He doesn't have the balls to do what is needed: drill in ANWAR, the coast of Florida, and conquer parts of the middle east for better access to oil. The Muslims have proven that they can't run things without killing each other and raping their own women, so maybe it's time for some good ol' Colonialism. We can claim Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE... That should guarantee cheap oil for decades to come... AND it will finally put an end to creeping shari'a and the fall of Europe, which is only 8 - 10 yrs away.

"Where is he right about torture? Feeding those fat slobs (the terrorists) cold Chicken Orange is not torture."
Short-term: Counter insurgency is difficult. It is really, really difficult to make new friends to help you win the war as it is, and it is impossible to make new friends if you have already tortured them. Long-term: If you torture a few people now it will become the norm later. We spend most of our time dealing with dictators who have conscripted armies and it makes things easier if they just surrender. They won't do that if they think we are going to torture them. McCain was right when he went against the republican party and helped clarify the "no torture ever" policy in the US military. Posted by: bleh at March 26, 2008 02:38 PM (/InkS) 40

Hmm... I missed this speech. However, I caught the end of his speech on the economy on FoxNews yesterday. And I'd like to point out that almost every time I listen to you guys talk about McCain, my opinion of him goes down. And nearly every time I listen to McCain himself speak, I like him better. Except that sometimes his voice and vocal mannerisms annoy me. But on balance, I think he's an acceptable candidate for president. Sorry bleh, but I disagree with you and McCain on this. We bloody well SHOULD torture terrorists for all of the following reasons. 1. Respect for international law: Terrorists wear no uniforms, follow no rules. By giving them the protection of international law (Geneva convention, etc) we legitimize their breaking of the rules which only encourages more of the same. Soldiers in uniform (Iraqi Army) are entitled to fair treatment from us. Non uniformed terrorists are entitled to a bullet in the head after we are done with getting information out of them, and that's all. 2. Information obtained by torture is necessary to save American lives. 3. Torture with the aim of forcing terrorists to renounce Islam will have a deterrent effect: The promise of rewards in heaven will seem less appealing to future terrorists if they are forced to become apostates. 4. Torture is neccesary for public morale. We are in this for the long term and people will lose hope of victory if terrorists are not known to be punished.

wtf? Torturing people is not good for public morale and nobody wants to make people renounce Islam via the water board. I never said that captured terrorists were entittled to protection under the geneva convention, but torture is off the table. The US military does not torture people. Not in the past, not now and not in the future. Posted by: bleh at March 26, 2008 03:10 PM (/InkS) 46

"Close Gitmo? And send these perps where?" Maybe we should throw them in the ocean on the way home. No matter what happens with Gitmo, some sort of trial is necessary. I don't think they should be treated like citizens of the US, not counting the actual citizens locked up there, but we need to be sure that some legal process happens for each of them. We should have held quick military commission, executed those who could
easily be proven guilty of fighting out of uniform or being guilty of
war crimes, and extradited those who couldn't be to their countries of
origin (these countries, in turn, would have freaked out and
imprisoned those who were suspicious, instead of playing the current
shell game where they run agit-prop against us to the delight of their
populations, and refuse to take any responsibility).
Unfortunately, due to a combination of arrogance and "new-age" thinking we didn't do it. So now we're stuck with them and no easy way out. Posted by: MlR at March 26, 2008 04:01 PM (mX6h5) 53

After the last 16, it's getting kind of old. Oops, I said "old," and we'll sure-hail be hearing THAT enough, after June. If we're not already. Reading over these comments, I'm feeling pretty good about having missed this stupid speech. Maybe if I manage to miss all of them, from now until November, I'll be able to get into the voting booth without wanting to throw up. Well... without actually throwing up, I should say, because I already want to. "We put our dumbest guy up against your smartest guy--twice--and won both times. Suck it." Nyahaha!! Now that's going to get repeated around here for the next few weeks! Calix #41 "However, I caught the end of his speech on the economy on FoxNews yesterday." I only heard the part about his solution to this stupid banking crisis, which, if the newsdweeb is to be believed is "essentially, do nothing." only he said it in a way that indicated he approved of it. I sure do. Both Dims are proposing giant expensive government programs to prop up the failing banks, followed by more giant expensive government programs to more-tightly regulate the banks. McCain, if I can trust him on this, is calling for the stupid banks to fail, and to let this act as a needed corrective on the surviving banks. I actually own stock in one bank that's circling the drain, and still like this plan. Not-quote-O.T.: Both Dims are also calling for giant expensive government programs to bail out the "small borrowers" who are, per them, compleeeeeeeetely blameless in creating their own messes. Pfui! Would it be too much to ask that anybody applying for this kind of relief should have to bring in their actual loan application paperwork plus proof of income (whether or not it was originally required at loan-making time), so that any applicant who took out a "liar's loan" can be summarily kicked to the curb? Posted by: Stoop Davy Dave at March 26, 2008 05:15 PM (wfnRV) 55
McCain's a big believer in nuclear power. That's his big global warming policy prescription, and it's a sound one. It wouldn't be bad to close Gitmo and move the terrorists to a new maximum security prison in Leavenworth. It would be much cheaper, and the guards could be stationed with their families somewhere decent too. Nobody would escape, but if one actually managed to somehow get out the KS farmboys would take care of it for us. Posted by: funky chicken at March 26, 2008 05:43 PM (I+jPP) 56
Stoop: my husband heard that part and said to send McCain a donation. Basically the gist of it was that taxpayers shouldn't be expected to bail out banks or individuals who did stupid or dishonest things with their mortgages. I only heard the part about his solution to this stupid banking crisis, which, if the newsdweeb is to be believed is "essentially, do nothing." only he said it in a way that indicated he approved of it. I sure do. Both Dims are proposing giant expensive government programs to prop up the failing banks, followed by more giant expensive government programs to more-tightly regulate the banks.
