Spc. Monica Lin Brown Earns a Silver Star

The nation's third-highest medal for valor.

Texas girl (Lake Jackson, near Houston). A nineteen year old kid (I'm allowed to say this at my age and I am not objectifying her).

Under gunfire and mortar fire, she helped move wounded comrades to safety, at times shielding them with her own body.

Brown, of Lake Jackson, Texas, is scheduled to receive the Silver Star later this month. She was part of a four-vehicle convoy patrolling near Jani Kheil in the eastern province of Paktia on April 25, 2007, when a bomb struck one of the Humvees.
"We stopped the convoy. I opened up my door and grabbed my aid bag," Brown said.
She started running toward the burning vehicle as insurgents opened fire. All five wounded soldiers had scrambled out.
"I assessed the patients to see how bad they were. We tried to move them to a safer location because we were still receiving incoming fire," Brown said.

She helped move them out of harm's way, eventually some 500 yards, and then treated their wounds and saw them off to safety.

She saved their lives.

The military said Brown's "bravery, unselfish actions and medical aid rendered under fire saved the lives of her comrades and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat."

Spc. Brown serves in the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team.

She did them proud.

Well, I think several GIs have done enough, but they won't get the blue max-at least not yet.

Honestly, I think the only reason the MOH has only been awarded posthumously so far is that someone, somewhere in the DOD bureaucracy, has decided that the award would make the awardee a target for terrorism (nothing else makes any sense).

The actions of this troop for instance http://www.army.mil/-news/2007/02/26/1966-pvt-stephen-c-sanford-receives-distinguished-service-cross/ compare very favorably with previous MOH awardees.

If only all of our children felt this way, things might be different in the future! Thanks to Spc. Brown AND the wounded soldiers for being real heroes. I know why I am safe at night. I wish others did as well.

As I write this, at 1:30 EDT March 10, there are no stories about Spc. Brown up on the Defense Dept site, on the Central Command site, on the NATO ISAF site nor on the CJTF-82 site [except for a blurb from January when I expect her Star was submitted]. Yet again, the military fails to properly PR the heroes of this war.

All three of the Medal of Honor winners for the War were originally awarded Silver Stars. The Silver Star can be awarded at the theater level - I believe, while the DSC and the MoH have to be kicked up to the Pentagon.

One aspect being overlooked is that she is airborne, jumping out of perfectly good airplanes.

I can find nothing that says that either Paul Smith, Jason Dunham or Michael Murphy were originally awarded the Silver Star while their nominations for the MOH were being processed-it is certainly not required.

While Ross McGinninis was awarded the Silver Star (and deserves the MOH) Rafael Peralta was not for a very similar incident.
