| Quote of the DayGeorge Will, hitting McCain on his greatest weakness: Although his campaign is run by lobbyists; and although his dealings with lobbyists have generated what he, when judging the behavior of others, calls corrupt appearances; and although he has profited from his manipulation of the taxpayer-funding system that is celebrated by reformers -- still, he probably is innocent of insincerity. Such is his towering moral vanity, he seems sincerely to consider it theoretically impossible for him to commit the offenses of appearances that he incessantly ascribes to others. Such certitude is, however, not merely an unattractive trait. It is disturbing righteousness in someone grasping for presidential powers. Comments1

"When Smith chaired the Federal Election Commission, he voiced skepticism about the wisdom and constitutionality of aspects of McCain-Feingold's campaign regulations. McCain responded characteristically, impugning Smith's character. When, at a 2004 Senate hearing, Smith nevertheless extended his hand to McCain, McCain refused to shake it. " I'm guessing the idea he's going to make nice with conservatives is right out, then. Posted by: S. Weasel at February 28, 2008 12:00 PM (rasT+) 5

I'm not a McCain supporter by any means, but I suspect if you could look into his heart his answer would be that he'll stop using lobbyists and taking money when everybody else does. I concede that his posturing has put him in no position to say, "Everybody else does it!" and that's a moral failing too. But I'm not so certain it's as dangerous as the failing Will applies to him here.

Well, I met McCain last night at a fundraiser here in Houston. (Read about it here) Now, all of you know that I have admired him for a long time, but I can be objective and I observed him for a quite a while last night. He does not have any sense of the vanity and ego that has been attributed to him. He comes across as nice and humble. He was humble in his speech and he took a moment to talk to me even though I was just a lowly volunteer, not a big wig donating big money to his campaign. In addition his energy is amazing. I just didn't see a hint of how he is described by people who don't like him. Usually you see guys like this grab an underling and speak forcefully in a demanding way. He didn't do that. He would touch that person on the arm and speak with a smile on his face. If he had come across as arrogant in any way I would admit it. But he was charming and not to just those giving him money.

I don't think the issue is McCain's personality, but the way he chooses to frame the debate on his signature policies. During the debate on McCain-Feingold, he all but accused his colleagues of corruption even though he was and is engaged in some of the same behavior that he was condemning.
Were McCain to lead by example and not by rhetoric, it would be much harder to accuse him of moral vanity. His actions do not match his expectations for others and I think that's what Will is saying here. Posted by: Slublog at February 28, 2008 12:33 PM (AIEmv) 17
Yeah, we're kind of boned come January 2009 no matter who wins.
And those of us who haven't had the opportunity to be "charmed" personally through contact with the "maverick" will just have to rely on his legislative record -- McCain-Feingold, McCain-Lieberman, and McCain-Kennedy -- as we decide whether to support him or not. To be fair V the K, since 1997 he has sponsored 403 bills of which 140 made it out of committee and 12 were enacted. He has cosponsored 876 bills since 1997. I assume there are some good bills in there but admittedly I don't know if they come close to somewhat balancing out his bad bills. I can assume though that they are far superior to anything Clinton or Obama have or would sponsor. Posted by: polynikes at February 28, 2008 01:01 PM (m2CN7) 22
George Will writes and usually thinks as if he is still wearing that foolish little bow-tie. If this is McCain's 'greatest' weakness, then he has nothing to worry about. But I gather he probably won't be getting the 4 votes from the Will wing of the Republican Party. Guess he will just have to make do but it's a tough loss from which to recover. In 2001, McCain, a situational ethicist regarding "big money" in politics, founded the Reform Institute to lobby for his agenda of campaign restrictions. It accepted large contributions, some of six figures, from corporations with business before the Commerce Committee
Can you say appearence of impropriety boys and girls? Johnny-boy will soon learn that as a Republican that being squeeky-clean is insufficient to deflect such criticism from the Left, he must also appear to be squeeky clean. As always, it isn't the truth of the matter that counts, it's the seriousness of the charges. Perhaps his fellows in the Senate would like to conduct an investigation, in oh, say, August or September? Posted by: I R A Darth Aggie at February 28, 2008 01:54 PM (1hM1d) 26
I do think Will is mistaken. This kind of wonkery is the "greatest weakness" only to a handful of policy dweebs who can actually digest this minutiae and get worked into a lather about it. I would venture McCain has other weaknesses that are more serious, including a demoralized Republican base, and the fact that in an age of rock-star politics he's an elderly Washington inside-the-beltway hack.

I like Will. But he wouldn't have lasted 3 seconds with the viet cong. And that's okay. As we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Personally, unlike Will, when the converstation about McCain moves to questions of virtues and morals, I find it necessary and quite easy to cut McCain some slack. Sometimes a little vanity and hubrism has been well earned thought greats acts of virtue and morality. And I don't find anything that Will whines about to shake my confidence in McCain's ability to guide this nation on the moral plane it deserves. The fact Will whines so, to me is more the problem. A conservative needs, in order to be effective and thoughtful, to never lose sight of the whole picture. The forest for the trees. Will has, when it comes to McCain, committed this error. His man was Giuliani, and though I like Will, he is petty. And may I add, I suspect, a bit jealous. He knows he wouldn't last 3 seconds.

McCain is a douche because he has the manners and rhetoric of a liberal. Although the overall majority of his policies and principles are well within the Republican party mainstream and are mostly sorta conservative he presents as a lib. As the product of a long line of a sort of self appointed aristocracy he belongs to a culture that is more akin to John Kerry than Ronald Reagan. Like many career military officers he does not quite understand how ordinary people can get by without the leadership and care of an enormous infrastructure of food, medical care and the close guidance and leadership that the military provides for its working class of grunts and squids. This makes him arrogant in ways that defy common political labels. Posted by: Ronsonic at February 28, 2008 02:04 PM (ivft3) 30
So perfectly succinct that I'm gonna repeat it:
McCain is a douche because he has the manners and rhetoric of a liberal. McCain is a douche because he has the manners and rhetoric of a liberal. I've noticed the way some conservatives are dealing with the sucktacular situation we find ourselves in is to ignore John McFord and talk endlessly about how terrible Barack O'Carter is. Hannity was a pioneer in the technique, and Rush is doing the same. Everybody finds a way to cope, I guess.

You're not going to find it. There is nothing McCain can say or do that will change your mind. You know his record and you know what he will do in the future. Further, you understand all the arguments of why you should get in line and you haven't. You are going to be persuaded. The only way you will vote for McCain is by making a conscious choice to go against your values and judgement. All you get is bullying and name calling because that is all that the vote for McCain crowd has. These are the same people who were looking for ways to drive him, Lindsey Graham and their ilk from the Senate just last year in principle. Now, we are supposed to vote for him for President? Really? And those of us who disagree are the ones who need to be re-educated? Pass. But if McCain does win, it's going to be fascinating watching those who are now on his bandwagon breaking their ankles jumping off and professing themselves to be shocked, shocked to be betrayed by McCain once again. While I'm not a fan of McCain or his methods, I do plan to cast my vote for him in November. He is closer to my beliefs than either Clinton or Obama. In the unlikely event that he picks Huckabee to be his running mate, I will reconsider my decision. I'm just not sure I can cast a vote that will put an untrustworthy, disingenuous politician like Huckabee into office.
However, if McCain (sans Huckabee) is elected, he would have at most two years to prove his conservative bona fides. If he does not and goes squishy, I would probably vote for Democrats for Congress to effectively make him a lame duck and support any GOP candidate who challenged him in a primary in 2012. I'm not backtracking on anything. I didn't know stace was a McCain supporter so don't go hiding behind her/him. You are free to say whatever you want but I am also free to not care, particularly when you are going to make it personal. You question my judgement? Who the fuck are you and why should I care? There are a few McCain supporters who are civil in their argument but it always comes down to the same argument, McCain sucks less. If that's what you want then go for it. It's not what I want. Every single McCain supporter who tries to win support for him says, "Yea, I know his record sucks but..." I don't by your logic that if I don't line up and support McCain it's my fault if Obama gets the nomination. It is McCain's or any other candidates responisiblity to earn my vote. I understand the logic of lesser of two evils, it's not that deep a concept. But McCain is a step to far for me. He was for you too until your candidate lost in the primary. What if McCain is foreced to drop out and somehow Huckabee gets the nomination? Are you going to support him? How about if Ron Paul wins? If all you care about is getting a person with R behind their name elected then I have different decision criteria than you. Notice I said different, not better. And it's not just me; I was just using myself as one example. There are lots of others on this blog who are McCain supporters who've never bullied or namecalled on that subject, too. If you're going to make harsh statements, that's fine, but you should be more precise, or else you're just tarring everyone with the same brush, falsely.

I don't expect you to know that I'm a McCain supporter, because I've only mentioned it a few times. One time when I said something nice about McCain, I was falsely accused (by Gabe) of telling everyone to shut up and get in line. So there's a reason I don't comment much about McCain.
I supported both Romney and McCain with money, so I did my part. Now I've decided to back McCain. If you don't want to, that's your business, and fine with me. Just don't be so insulting to people who've made that decision. Posted by: stace at February 28, 2008 03:57 PM (4x6iT) 49

Again, I see it differently. I don't see a way the Republican party holds the White House in perpetuity. Sooner or later, somebody else gets to hang their colors in the White House. The longer a party holds the White House, the less likely the party is to keep holding the White House. The Republican party is actually less likely to occupy the White House in 2013 if McCain wins. It's part of the American political dynamic. A sizable number of voters will vote against the party in Executive power just for the sake of "fairness" or "change" or a misunderstanding of the concept of "separation of powers."
If not the Huckleberry, it's tough to see McCain picking as a running mate anyone who would disagree with him on Amnesty or Global Warming. That being the case, the continuance of "maverickism" is quite likely in any successor. McCain thinks the future of the Republican party is green and brown. Just don't be so insulting to people who've made that decision. I think you are missing the point, a point, I might add, that was broached by S. Weasel and not me. It has been elements of the McCain campaign who have been using the verbal bombing campaign against those of us unwilling to hop on the McCain bandwagon. We are not traitors to the cause and it gets a bit tiresome to be called that over and over. If I get kicked in the nuts enough times that I decide to kick back, it wasn't me who started the kicking. As we all know, William F. Buckley died yesterday. In 1998, when Buckley was runing NR and Lowell Weicker was a Senator from CT running for re-election, NR ran an article titled "Does Lowell Weicker Make You Sick?" You see Weicker was the protypcial RINO and Buckley, the man who pretty much revived conservative thought in this country, wanted no part of him. In fact, he started a PAC to help support the Dem challenger, a man named Joe Lieberman because he knew that having a fake Republican in office was often worse than having a Dem, even a very liberal one like Lieberman. Buckley said of his PAC "We want to pass the word that it's ok to vote for the other guy or stay home." There is no way I'm voting for Obama but staying at home, at least for the Presidential part of the process instead of voting for a horrible conservative, is very much an option. One Buckley endorsed. Posted by: JackStraw at February 28, 2008 04:43 PM (t+mja) 58
Sure, elements of the McCain campaign, that's true.
And now for some pro-McCain spin. McCain has been rated as America’s Worst Senator For Children by the Chidren's Defense Fund. I thought I'd repeat that since it annoys stace so much. Yes, I'm talking to you. Prove to me it's not true. Convince me that the man and his lackeys have any interest in supporting conservative principles without offering a buttmonkey every two syllables - and then for good measure, continue to treat me with respect between now and November without resorting to browbeating about how I'm the offender. Do all that and I'll swallow the bile, but if you - and he - continue to bitch and whine with self-righteousness that I'm the bad guy, and I'm offending you, and I'm bad because I'm mean to liberals and moderates, I can guarantee you'll get more of the same from me, not to mention your guy loses my vote, and perhaps the election. The two things McCain won't ever give me are the two things I want that he'll never offer: an apology for being the prick he is, and a promise that he'll stop calling his bastardization "conservatism". If you think any of this doesn't apply to you, too fucking bad - you're standing with that piece of shit, so you'll get hit with the same poo I'm flinging his way. "McCain is a douche because he has the manners and rhetoric of a liberal."
And that's just for starters. McCain is a douche because he uses the Clintonian nastiness, and victim poses, while he surreptitiously allows low-rent surrogates to do his bashing for him. Then McCain continues to be a douche because he plays the sanctimonious showboat, and hypocrite, about his PC purity. For example, while Sidney Rodham Hussein is having tantrums, peeing on the rug, and denouncing conservatives as bigots, no one is supposed to notice that he had the Huckster out stirring up prejudice against Mormons. Another example is the rumble that McMav is anti-Catholic. Since I never observed that, it seemed unworthy of belief. Maybe that's because he has the rabidly anti-Catholic John Hagee to spout the vile propaganda to likeminded voters that the Catholic Church is worse than Hitler, blablabla. Of course, his special interest pandering and Soros sponsored legislative record speaks , or snarls, for itself. Posted by: independents day at February 29, 2008 03:39 AM (F0DO0) 62

I will have a hard time buying ugg classic cardy at normal brick and mortar store for now on knowing that I can browse the largest selection I have ever seen and purchase confidently. Thanks for being a great company.Although your ugg boots cardy website is entered by users, the site has a lot of accurate and useful information on it.your net shop is kept to a minimum and favours websites connected to the ugg cardy boots Web Design Library in appearance and subject.
The popular blue ugg is renowned for its comfort. But some doctors worry that the popular black ugg could cause serious foot pain in the long run.So some podiatrists across the country are telling ugg classic cardy lovers to watch their steps. In fact, there is nothing wrong! The crochet boots online retailer also knows bargain-hungry shoppers are scouring the Web for discounts, and its UGG Classic Crochet rivals are more than happy to provide them. So it is putting coupon codes on ugg classic crochet that customers can use to save money on its site. Posted by: makol UGG at December 05, 2009 09:34 AM (cmMdO) 139
