My guess, shared with Patterico last night, was Gateway Pundit, who's pretty damn awesome.

But Captain Ed is darned good too.

3 There aren't that many good right-leaning blogs in the first place. Now there is one less. HA doesn't allow bad language to be used which, more or less, rules out Ace. Otherwise, they could use Ace's irreverence over there to balance out AP's moroseness.

I'm with you, Laddy. I think that Hot Air could have been served better by bringing over a lesser-known but very good blogger. Reducing the number of widely-read blogs on the right isn't a wise move, I don't believe.

Huh. Seems kind of an odd match to me. Hot Air is short, punchy and visual. Captain Ed goes for longer, thoughtful essays.

But, you know, anything to make fast moving sites move faster. Work is boring.

I'm kinda bummed by that, but it became worthless to comment over at Captain Ed's... a few too many conspiracy theorists who would put up essays that dwarf mine.

That said, I love the man's writing- it's always really thoughtful and to the point. But hey- here's where the fun is. I registered over at HotAir- finally- and I'll probably lurk there a bit, but I'm not real excited about this.

11 Disappointing.

Ed's good, if predictable, and tossing him a check is fine, but his own site exists, and it gets read. A lot. As much as Hot Air, I'd think. We certainly all know who he is and what he's about. He's too "professional" and "Republicans, yay!" for me, but I'm not who Hot Air is for (I only stop by there to watch Allah upset the delicate flowers), so..meh.

Picking out some obscure "co-blogger" type who does quality stuff (Karl at Goldstein's, say) and encouraging him to do more, and raising his profile, would make more sense. Unless it's just about tossing around attaboy checks. Which is fine. But adding bunch of crossposts from an equally popular site with almost entirely the same audience doesn't do anything.

15 I'm in agreement with Rinnie about preferring reading, and I prefer the free-for-all that is open commenting. Most of the time I don't bother with video links anyway - there's no guarantee that someone's not going to let loose with a stream of profanity, or even just start talking about something I don't want to have to explain to the kiddos at the tender ages of 2 and 5, and my kids are usually within earshot. I'm gonna have problems soon anyway, as my 5-year-old is quickly mastering reading, and I've noticed him trying to sound out some of the stuff he sees on my monitor, despite the rule that he's not supposed to LOOK at my monitor.

Hot Air's turning into Microsoft.

CQ was a pretty influential (as much as blogs have any influence, anyways) blog; I'm sorry to see it go. However, I suspect that big blogs with a lot of traffic have more clout than a bunch of smaller ones. The right could probably use it's own version of the megablogs the left has.

I've been following HotAir since day one, and I can't think of a worse choice. Well, I can -- I mean, they could have picked Megan McArdle -- but you know what I mean. Ed's an essayist, which is a far cry from the 'quippers' that HotAir requires. A paragraph or two of insightful 'quip', then on to the video or article -- that's how we like it over there. Ed's going to launch into some 19-paragraph thesis on the inner workings of the Pakistani government and people are going to be running for their lives.

Of course, the problem is that Ed is so respected in the RW blogosphere that people will have a hard time telling him how they feel. They'll waffle their way around the truth.

"Gosh, Ed, you gave us SO MUCH information in that last post about Pakistan that I'm not sure we can process SO MUCH information, even coming from a great source as yourself who gives us SO MUCH information!"

Translation:

"Enough about Pakistan, fer krissakes! Where are the Britney topless pics??"

And apart from subject matter, I'm surprised HotAir (Michelle?) picked someone so droll. I don't mean that in a derogatory sense -- if you want to come across as a "serious" blogger, then any form of humor is strictly verboten -- but that hardly describes HotAir. Although they're not a true eclectic site like Maggie's Farm, they do a great job of balancing out the silly and the serious. But -- the point is -- even the 'serious' articles have a light, airy feel to them, unlike Ed's more ponderous prose. It'll be interesting to see if he purposefully tries to lighten up a bit. Ed Morrissey cracking a joke? Now that's a scoop.

All I was hoping for was somebody to offset Allahpundit's tendancies. He really enjoys poking people in the eye. He whores for pageviews and trolls on his own site and then whines when he is accused of doing just that. It's only part of what he does so I can live with it but I was really glad Bryan was there to offset it to some degree. I think Captain Ed will do okay on that front but I would have been delighted with Gatewaypundit, and not just 'cause hes a "local boy made good".
