And today pigs flew (chad)

Not quite but almost as noteworty Clark Hoyt, the Public Editor of the New York Times (doesn't that almost sound like some sort of cheap detective series?), called Bill Keller on the carpet for publishing the McCain / Iseman story.

Yes, this is the same Clark Hoyt, who when Ed Whelan pointed out that Linda Greenhouse, the NY Times Supreme Court Reporter, was reporting on cases in which her husband or his law firm were participating managed to keep a straight face while proclaiming that charge a personal vendetta. To me this indicates that this story was the journalistic equivalent of finding a turd in the punch bowl at your daughter's 400 person wedding.

Given this development I have a feeling the fall out on this story isn't quite over.

Edit: I originally named Linda Greenhouse as Jan Grossman. I fixed it but I couldn't just do a strike out so I had to delete the original name.

Many papers used to declare their loyaties, "The X Democrat" fill in the city.  Perhaps the NY Times should change their name to the NY Democrat.

Would make thinks a lot clearer for both of the readers who haven't already figured that out and the staff of PBS.

Dont matter

MOVE-ON got their attack ad

"JOhn McCain- who by the way is really fucking old- claims he is going to bring ethics back to washington. BUT- (cue sinister political ad voice)-

the NY TImes reported in February that he had an INAPPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP WITH A FEMALE LOBBYIST

Done and done. Obama owes Keller big time

IM sure his ass is still reeling from the cockpoking Keller gave it

4 Given the extensive documentation by New York Magazine of Keller's affair with the "power-dater" (some eupehmism that, eh?) that led him to betray and abandon his first wife and family, you would think he would know that affairs leave far more evidence than was uncovered by his pathetic reporters.

Why didn't Bill Keller use his extensive experience and expertise in the area of adultery and betrayal to inform the research and publication of this story?

5 If the NYT is running stories like this over 8 months before the election, can you imagine what they'll print in the week before the election?  No, I can't either.

The Times sent Clark Hoyt out as a pinch-hitter on the original smear story.

I missed where McCain himself admits behaving inappropriately. I did not listen carefully to his official response the day after the first NYT smear story publication. McCain argued that he was "disappointed" in the NYT. Where is McCain's admission re: Paxson's case? Editors cross reference, so is the following quote regarding Paxson or Keating? "McCain was admitting when he acknowledged behaving inappropriately"? Is this a fabricated 'fill in the gap' nuance? Keller said, "The point of the story was that [McCain] behaved in such a way that his close aides felt the relationship constituted reckless behavior and feared it would ruin his career."

As usual for investigative reporters hitting a brick wall, is it those pesky anonymous "close aides" fabricating the assassin's justification, or the reporters themselves, or together?

--

The fact that Lobbyists exist is not McCain's fault.

To begin with, this entire business stinks of the Evangelical vs. Secular battle to public broadcast. Paxson wanted to buy out a bankrupted PBS type station and met resistance because he would not abstain from his evangelical mission. The FCC waited 30 months, waiting for Paxson to lose his business opportunity by just sitting on the case, waiting for it to suffocate. Paxson had every right to approach the government regarding the government. McCain was chief of the complaint department and heared Paxson's complaints, whether personally or by aides, it doesn't matter. McCain was doing his job by hearing from constituents, whether personally by private citizens or by lobbying business representatives. After the FCC waited over 2 years to accept or decline Paxson's bid, McCain wrote two letters to the FCC to motivate their actual vote and procedural responsibilities. BIG DEAL.

So far as I've noted, all of the other details of this hubbub hinge upon who says what they remember, not upon concrete evidence.

--

A critical response to the story:

Broadcaster Lowell "Bud" Paxson said he talked with McCain in his Washington office several weeks before a letter was written. "I remember going there to meet with him" [not claiming that the meeting took place, but only claiming what he meant to have happen] to say, "You're head of the Commerce Committee. The FCC is not doing its job. I would love for you to write a letter." "Was Vicki there? Probably," Paxson said. [Probably is not a smoking gun.]

Lanny Davis, a member of that group and a former aide to President Bill Clinton, [clarification of source and reliability] said the lobbyists wanted a strong letter urging that the commission approve the deal. He said that Iseman regularly talked about her access to McCain and his office. [Big deal. In the PR business, everyone brags about what they can accomlish for their clients. That a pretty lady had balls as big as Lanny's made his grudge.]

Paxson's hullabaloo transaction called for the Christian broadcaster Cornerstone TeleVision of Wall, Pa., to take over the noncommercial license of WQEX, the sister station to public broadcaster WQED. Cornerstone would then sell its commercial license to Paxson for $35 million. The money would be split between Cornerstone and WQED, which was operating in the red.

The proposed station swap was highly contentious in Pittsburgh and involved a multi-pronged lobbying effort by the parties to the deal. Local activists and some community leaders had objected to one of their public TV stations being turned over to a religious channel.

The public opposition caused a long delay at the FCC, and by late 1999, it had been 30 months since the deal was offered for FCC approval.

Five days after McCain's second letter, the FCC voted 3 to 2 to approve the deal. The commission also imposed a condition prohibiting Cornerstone from "proselytizing." Cornerstone would not agree to those terms, and the deal collapsed.

--

So the NYT wants to squalsh not only McCain, but the Evangelicals. Also, the Evangelical involved seems to knife McCain in the back. Now there's a story. Odd, how alliances work out in the end of a campaign. Things are just getting started.
