| USA USA USA...The Miracle On Ice28 years ago today a bunch of scrappy college players beat the world's best hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, NY. Comments1
People under thirty will think I'm nuts, of course, but I consider it one of the big events in the turning around of the country back then.

and beat Finland for the gold and they did. I was glued to the set, getting ready to get kicked out of my second college.
RIP Herb. Amazing. Well done sir. Posted by: Dave in Texas at February 22, 2008 07:33 PM (FXakj) 3
Flyers vs. Red Army in 1976 was pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOvzHbprMGc Ed Snider's introduction of capitalism after the Rooskies left the ice was nice: "If they don't play, they don't get paid."

I can remember it like it was yesterday. I was in junior high school and was sitting in my parents car in the school parking lot on an overcast afternoon when I heard the news. Not like it was a big deal or anything.

Defeating The Red Army was an epic feat. Another epic win for America was when US wrestler -Rulon Gardner -beat one of the greatest wrestlers ever- Alexander Karelin [Russian]- who was undefeated for 13 straight years. Alexander Karelin is a beast…….. http://nuke.toosa.net/~ligur/alexander_karelin.jpg Posted by: The Great Satan at February 22, 2008 07:36 PM (n8KC9) Posted by: Entropy at February 22, 2008 07:36 PM (HgAV0) 7
I remember that clearly and watching the clips always makes me choke up.

God, what a beautiful sports moment. My wife still can't figure out why this makes me tear up. Posted by: Beloved Fluffer at February 22, 2008 07:45 PM (q+HK/) 11

I was a sophomore in high school. I still think it was the single best sports moment of my lifetime. That clip brings it all back.
Posted by: Kerry at February 22, 2008 07:50 PM (0piV8) 13
Good setup for the feelings of the times, but you kinda underplayed the fear and loathing of all things Soviet. They were the bad guys... always... and for good reason. Especially in the Olympics, the cheatin' bastards.

Both as a hockey player and as a lover of my country, this is the most defining moment in sports for me. Herb Brooks was probably the only North American coach with the vision and awareness of a counter to the Soviet system that was copied successfully throughout the 80s, adding North American physicality to it. The fluidity of the American system- a hybrid of the European model (create spaces and work the spaces into good shooting lanes) and the North American model (crash the net and look for rebounds) hung with and in some cases annihilated some of the best teams of that era- Sweden, Czechoslovakia, Romania, the Finns. Also- to put Herb's coaching talents into perspective- in 2002, coming off of a World Cup win in 1996 and a colossal disappointment in 1998, Herb was tabbed to put things right with USA Hockey and the national team. The US was stellar through the 1st round, demolished Russia to get to the gold medal game, and lost ultimately to a Canadian team that was truly a team of destiny (after getting shelled by Sweden 5-0 in their opening game). 2 Olympics, 1 gold, and 1 silver. RIP Herb. tmi3rd Posted by: tmi3rd at February 22, 2008 08:19 PM (YU6jA) 16
I was in the Army, watching with friends in the NCO Family Housing on Ft. Bragg, NC. There is a special, crappy bond between people who served in the military under Carter. This special moment in history helped reignite our pride during those dark years. Posted by: TXMarko at February 22, 2008 08:21 PM (ux6Ha) 17
99% of the people that have seen that clip and pretend to have seen it happen seem to think that they won Gold with that win.
ESPN even said it the other day (only heard it once so maybe they fixed it); people accuse me of lying when I tell them that they beat Finland for Gold after that Posted by: Verlin Martin at February 22, 2008 08:31 PM (sBNzZ) 18
Oh and to {dave in texas} 21 inch screen, man were you guys rich
we watched it with the big antenna (no rabbit ears) on a 13 in heh (our 2nd color tv though) Posted by: Verlin Martin at February 22, 2008 08:33 PM (sBNzZ) 19
That was 2 years before I was born but I fully appreciate the moment even if I don't really care for hockey.

Oh shit. I'm old. You know what makes me feel old? When some young whippersnapper says he feels old because he remembers watching TV in the '80's. Sonny boy, I remember seeing my first color TV in the 60's. I think I better go take a nap, I'm fucking geriatric. Posted by: PHenry at February 22, 2008 09:01 PM (ZCpnr) 21

Me, too. You should have yelled at the kid to get off your lawn. Posted by: OregonMuse at February 22, 2008 09:37 PM (zTfCf) 22
I saw a funny political cartoon after the Russian hockey defeat: at the bottom of the cartoon, there's a barren, mountainous wasteland labeled "Afghanistan", and at the top, a Soviet cargo transport helicopter, and there's a bunch of guys being pushed out without parachutes.
And they've all got hockey sticks. Heh. Posted by: OregonMuse at February 22, 2008 09:40 PM (zTfCf) 23
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZMEE7tlq6A You guys would appreciate this. Huge Russia v Canada junior hockey brawl. Canada wins the fight and the game. Posted by: captkidney at February 22, 2008 09:49 PM (U8dPv) 24
Meh. Doesn't really make me proud.
Posted by: Michele Obama at February 22, 2008 10:30 PM (5BNAB) 25
I was there! Not actually in the arena, but on the streets of Lake Placid, watching the game with the thousands lined along the streets gazing at TVs shopkeepers had set up in their windows. I was only 16 and it was freaking amazing.
I had never seen such American pride. You can still see it at rodeos, but that's about it. Posted by: Brennan at February 22, 2008 10:33 PM (dZB7R) 26

damn. don't know what I was smokin when I wrote 21. It was a 13" color set on cable that I bought when I was in high school. Montgomery Wards.

This is one time I don't mind being old enough to have witnessed that event. I'll never forget how deep in the suck the U.S. was at that time and provided a backdrop for this game. I'm not even a hockey fan, yet this easily makes the top 5 in my list of most awesome sporting events I've ever seen.

Buy the DVD, "Do You Believe In Miracles?". You won't regret it. You will cry watching it, because the PLAYERS cry in their interviews. It's unbelievable.
One spoiler, for those who haven't seen the DVD - the State Dept. made a videotape of various events to show the hostages once they were home from Iran. Highlights from this game were the last segment on that tape. The DVD has an interview with one of the former hostages, who said that this game was the one thing, out of everything that happened while he was being held, that he truly regretted missing. This did more to end the Cold War than people think. It changed our attitude in the US 180 degrees from Carter's lame ass to Reagan's big honkin' stick.
Posted by: roy at February 23, 2008 12:07 AM (x11RI) 30
I was 11 at the time. The game was not shown live, it was played in the afternoon and replayed that night. I remember Jim McKay coming on before they showed the replay, the look of utter disbelief on his face. He didn't spoil the ending, but he pretty much gave the impression that the game was not to be missed. It was definitely a spark of optimism after the doldrums of the Carter years.
Which is why, when people say that we need another "Carter" to slap us into reality, I shudder. The Carter years were awful, I don't want to relive them. Posted by: Dr. Remulak at February 23, 2008 12:47 AM (g8TT6) 31
I was lucky enough to meet Mike Eruzione and talk to him for a while at a Romney fundraiser in Boston a couple of months ago. He was a very affable guy, and you'd have thought we had just kicked the Russkies' asses the week before the way people were congratulating him.
Hard to believe it's been 28 years. Posted by: Andy at February 23, 2008 01:04 AM (23Gys) 32
I don't recall that game being shown live. I think it was a morning game. I remember watching it replayed later in the evening. I also remember Jim McKay teeing it up, which made me watch it. I was only 11, didn't give a crap about hockey at the time (the Penguins sucked bad at the time). The Steelers & Pirates dominated the Western PA region at the time. I became a hockey fan after that game though.

I saw this in an Irish pub in Puerto Rico the day after so some of the suspense was gone but none of the excitement. Even the Puerto Ricans in the bar, who weren't noted for the either their love of hockey or Americans (this was at the height of the FALN shit), were pumped.
As a Boston kid who came of age with Bobby Orr, the Big Bad Bruins and the Beanpot, this was and still is the greatest sports moment of all time. Posted by: JackStraw at February 23, 2008 08:40 AM (t+mja) 35

Mike Eruzione played for the Toledo Goaldiggers IHL team. They were a big deal in minor league hockey at the time and he was a huge fan favorite. He left the team to practice and prepare for the Olympics and never returned to the Goaldiggers. I was not a big hockey fan but I yelled like crazy when they beat the Soviets. It's hard to emphasize how big this win was. The Soviets were our mortal enemy with nukes pointed at us, the Berlin Wall was still up, the Iron Curtain was still up. This wasn't simply a hockey win - it was a victory over the Communist Menace. Still get tears. Some may remember Ted Garvin. He coached the Goaldiggers and one time, between periods, threw his dentures across the lockerroom to make a point. He later coached the Red Wings for a couple months before getting fired.
