Obama's Captain Speaks

Although his identity is withheld.

Jake Tapper spoke to the guy, and he claims to find him credible. He re-tells Obama's tale.

Still sounds like bullshit, but here's what the guy's saying.

Prior to deployment the Captain -- then a Lieutenant -- took command of a rifle platoon at Fort Drum. When he took command, the platoon had 39 members, but -- in ones and twos -- 15 members of the platoon were re-assigned to other units. He knows of 10 of those 15 for sure who went to Iraq, and he suspects the other five did as well.

The platoon was sent to Afghanistan with 24 men.

"We should have deployed with 39," he told me, "we should have gotten replacements. But we didn't. And that was pretty consistent across the battalion."

He adds that maybe a half-dozen of the 15 were replaced by the Fall of 2003, months after they arrived in Afghanistan, but never all 15.

This continues sounding like pure bullshit, no matter what the guy says or how credible Tapper claims to find him. Milbloggers say the platoon is the basic organic unit of the army, and troops are never picked out of a platoon to serve elsewhere -- if more troops are needed elsewhere, a whole platoon goes, not just Ronny, Bobby, Ricky and Mike.

I'm not in the military, but everyone who is seems to be in firm agreement on this point.

On to the other claim:

As for the weapons and humvees, there are two distinct periods in this, as he explains -- before deployment, and afterwards.

At Fort Drum, in training, "we didn't have access to heavy weapons or the ammunition for the weapons, or humvees to train before we deployed."

What ammunition?

40 mm automatic grenade launcher ammunition for the MK-19, and ammunition for the .50 caliber M-2 machine gun ("50 cal.")

"We weren't able to train in the way we needed to train," he says. When the platoon got to Afghanistan they had three days to learn.

They also didn't have the humvees they were supposed to have both before deployment and once they were in Afghanistan, the Captain says.

"We should have had 4 up-armored humvees," he said. "We were supposed to. But at most we had three operable humvees, and it was usually just two."

So what did they do? "To get the rest of the platoon to the fight," he says, "we would use Toyota Hilux pickup trucks or unarmored flatbed humvees." Sometimes with sandbags, sometimes without.

Also in Afghanistan they had issues getting parts for their MK-19s and their 50-cals. Getting parts or ammunition for their standard rifles was not a problem.

"It was very difficult to get any parts in theater," he says, "because parts are prioritized to the theater where they were needed most -- so they were going to Iraq not Afghanistan."

"The purpose of going after the Taliban was not to get their weapons," he said, but on occasion they used Taliban weapons. Sometimes AK-47s, and they also mounted a Soviet-model DShK (or "Dishka") on one of their humvees instead of their 50 cal.

Tapper sternly scolds bloggers for calling bullshit on Obama, but right there, he himself calls bullshit -- he just wants to pretend Obama's got it right. The source himself denies he had to "capture" enemy weapons and equipment to fight -- he is claiming that he did in fact use such weapons on occasion, but that is different than warfare generally... how?

As for not having the weapons to train with at home -- well, that sounds like bullshit too. Tapper thinks his job is done if he merely talks to a guy making these claims; but perhaps he should actually do some actual reporting and find out if our army is being denied key ammunition in training.

The left has a habit of claiming victory when some small detail is corroborated. Obama fucking claimed our troops HAD TO -- not chose to on occasion -- capture the very weapons with which they were expected to fight the enemy.

Tapper gets a guy claiming "Yeah, once we took a captured Soviet heavy machine gun and used it on a truck."

Then they say, "Ah-ha! You owe Obama an apology! He was Right!"

They did the exact same thing with Beauchamp.

Beauchamp claims that a guy picks up a child's skull from a mass grave and dances around his fellow soldiers while wearing the skull as a fucking yarmulke.

One soldier says, "We found some bones, they looked like animal bones but maybe they were human."

The left claims: Ah-ha! TNR had it exactly right! Apologize!

Really? What about that fucking shit you mentioned about wearing the child's skull as a yarmulke while dancing around your commanding officer like Pennywise the clown?

Same thing here, it seems. Obama spins out a ludicrous exaggeration, some claims are found to support (if you credit the claim) a much more plausible version of the claims he made, which are as far from the original as the lightning bug is from the lightning, and... we're wrong, we need to apologize.

Okay, whatever.

Hey, Yglesias? I'm sorry about your manateesque metabolism.

4 ...and sometimes, they only had one human skull, and they had to pass it around to wear on their heads.

Not only that, but during training, they often had to run over stuffed dogs.

13 Ace --

Two unintentionally hilarious things from Tapper's piece that you didn't reproduce above.  The ending:

I might suggest those on the blogosphere upset about this story would be better suited directing their ire at those responsible for this problem, which is certainly not new.  That is, if they actually care about the men and women bravely serving our country at home and abroad.

Ah, sweet ad hominen.

And this TNR / Beauchamp special:

He [the captain] told me his story, which I found quite credible, though for obvious reasons he asked that I not mention his name or certain identifying information.

Ah, sweet anonymity!

16 Well, first, troops can volunteer for other deployments, such as overseas, in theatre, and there are B-billets etc that can take people away from the unit. But down to 50%? If you take 10% casualties, you are supposedly combat ineffective.

That is a huge loss. That LT should have requested mast or so. If he didn't, that's his responsibility. He's in charge.

As far as not being able to shoot or have range time, I sympathize but only so much. It is hard to go to range even in peace-time, and for heavy weapons? Forget it.

Nor do I think it is a bad thing that most of our weapons would be in theatre where we need them.

I cannot look at this as being anything other than a failure in leadership at the lowest levels. If it was real at all. I understand how hard it is when you deploy and the system is not always equitable, but I would not want to serve under that LT.

18 You have to admit these pricks have no shame.  Tapper's claim to find his source credible sounds so "Foeresque".

Apparently the most important capability of an MSM "journalist" is the ability to divine the veracity of a source.  Not verify the story by establishing facts mind you, just magically determining whether you think it "feels" right- i.e., the story fits nicely into the media's political ideology.

Okay.

--We didn't have any up-armored humvees to train with in Germany in '05, either.  Reason being?  They're all being sent downrange, where they should be.  We trained in soft-skinned trucks like everyone else.  Up-armored jobbies are just heavier and have less space inside.

--It is very possible for a platoon to be cherry-picked for people (A guy reenlists, is given choice of duty station, picks somwhere else, and goes)  but this generally happens AFTER a deployment.  Units are sent downrange at full strength or as close to as possible.  I wouldn't call it impossible, just highly imporobable.

--He says they didn't have enough training time.  Every goddamn platoon commander on Earth says that; it's part of they're fucking job.

--They had problems getting heavy machine guns fixed.  Welcome to reality, genius.

--Unarmored flatbed humvees were SOP in 2003.  We put layers of sandbags across the bed for protection against IEDs, and paid local national welders to make steel plate armor for the sides, and steel floorplates for the driver and the TC.  Should they have had up-armored humvees?  I suppose so.  But this is hardly without precedent.

--The 'mounting a Dishka' thing gives me pause.  I never went to Afghanistan, but in Iraq I never saw anything that big used by any Coalition troops--and for that matter, I never saw any use of captured weapons that wasn't 'under the table'.

I don't know about Afghan ROEs but:  "To get the rest of the platoon to the fight," he says, "we would use Toyota Hilux pickup trucks or unarmored flatbed humvees."

So a "platoon" of 24 men use enemy-marked vehicles? One thing to use "unarmored flatbed humvees", especially for Afghan where armor is GG'd by mountains, but pickup trucks?

27 If our troops are not getting the equipment they need, then Barry-O is one of 535 people in this country, when wearing Senator costume (with matching cape), with the superpower to do something about it. Every time he brings up one of these sob stories about how horrible Bush has made things, we need to hammer him on how he's done nothing to fix that problem these last three years. (The same goes for Senator Hillary!, who's got 7 years to answer for.)

This Captain Beauchamp sounds like his cousin the PVT in Iraq-- some Leftie wannabe who's padding out the resume and making sure he's immune from being called a "chickenhawk".

Posted by: Raoul Ortega at February 22, 2008 04:51 PM (xuymE)

28 I dunno, the left is perfectly willing to cherry pick sundry bitching and murphy's law and actual combat to piss all over the war effort.  I guess their point is that any malfunction or compromise is another chance to be juvenile and say "See, Bush did something bad, again, I is teh smart."
The training ammunition supply shortage seems stupid, a commenter on the Corner pointed out that we aren't exactly burning through ammunition in combat, even if we were killing 600,000 civvies a year.  At least not at the pace of wars like WWII.
Otherwise, my reaction is a big so?  Our footprint in Afghanistan is small by design.  We aren't invading, we are assisting the locals.
But the main Obama point, that we had to use enemy supplies is DOA, he states "The purpose of going after the Taliban was not to get their weapons," he said, but on occasion they used Taliban weapons. Sometimes AK-47s, and they also mounted a Soviet-model DShK (or "Dishka") on one of their humvees instead of their 50 cal.
Again, weak liberal shit, weak shit only used to make a scattershot accusation that, see, everything sucks.

You do your research.

Do you prefer Obama?

Oh, I am staying out of the presidential primaries. I am not going to get involved in the presidential primaries.

For you, it’s just a matter of who is going to be nominated and who is not.

32 So he wasn't a Captain, who didn't run out of ammunition in theater so he wasn't forced to use captured weapons, whose platoon may have been understrength because of normal turnover but certainly wasn't because platoons are 'split' against Army policy, so... even though the circumstances were misrepresented, and even though the anecdote was not representative of any actual circumstances reported by any other units... yeah... it "checks out".

Isn't a Dishka almost twice as heavy as a ma deuce?

We know that up-armoured Humvees were thin on the ground for a while - in fact production of them was ramped up specifically because of conditions in Iraq - at the time Afghanistan was relatively quiet, and then it started to heat up over there too.

I'm also not too surprised that there was a shortage of training ammo for heavy weapons - and I don't care that much.  These are weapons that soldiers should already know how to fire - and they can do refresher once they hit the ground.  I'd rather have the ammo in Iraq or Afstan where it can be used to kill bad guys AND for training then sitting in a bunker in upstate NY.  While 5.56 rifle ammo is availilble off the shelf from a number of sources around the world, .50 and 40mm is rarer and I would speculate that the appropriate factories are running flat out.

Like most lefty/msm stories, this one has some real grains of truth behind it, but any inconvenient (ie mitigating) facts have been strained out for maximum impact / truthiness.

Also someone should tell Obama and Hillary that if they get socialized healthcare then the troops will have to ride into battle in Iltis and G-Wagons like the Canadians - and also have no helicopters, like the Canadians, thereby causing them to take casulties which are disproportionately much higher.

Posted by: holdfast at February 22, 2008 05:03 PM (Gzb30)

34 as for heavy munition training, I have to say that this seems stupid too.  .50cals and grenades aren't exactly precision weapons.
They are point and shoot. Things start sploding.
Now, I don't have groundpounding experience, but shooting weapons like this seem to be more fun than actually productive in the training sense.  I imagine its more important for the peeps to learn how to clean those weps.

Posted by: joeindc44 at February 22, 2008 05:08 PM (NXelq)

35 10th Mountain was in Afghanistan from May to roughly August of 2003, and while portions of the 1 CCT conducted combat ops, most of the members of the 10th deployed made from 2nd BCT to train Afghan Army and provide admin/logisitcs support for other deployed forces.

I could see if this Lt. was deployed with a short platoon in an administrative role, that would make sense, but not a platoon that was to see any serious combat or do patroling on a day to day basis. No CO in his right mind sends a platoon out to patrol at less than 50% staffing.

As for uparmored HMMWV's, they were probably in short supply in Afghanistan, because most if not all of them were in Iraq. Given that summer of 2003 was the start of the first rounds of IED deployments en masse it would make sense for them to be there and not in Afghanistan where IED attacks were rare.

And this does have "Beauchamp II" written all over it.

39 As for the use of captured weapons, it does happen, hell in WWII US soldiers would use MP40s all the time, and the Germans loved to get their hands on m1 Carbines.

Todays special forces are TRAINED in the use of Soviet Bloc weapons, as some units like the Green Berets will train local forces to use russian weapons as that is the most common and available for them to use.

SEALS will go on mission armed with enemy weapons as they will go deep into hostile territory for days on end with little chance of resupply, that and US weapons make a distinct sound which will attract the wrong kind of attention fast.

If a Taliban hears a AK go off, there is a greater chance he will think nothing of it.

As for jury rigging flatbeds and hummers, it is not the failure of the military it is called INGENUITY, US tankers did the same think in WWII when they used metal nazi barracades to make hedge cutters so the M4 Shermans could cut through the French Hedgerows in the D-Day breaakthrough.

Before I heard someone had actually talked to the officer, I assumed that Obama had gotten US troops confused with British troops, which have had some specific equipment shortages.

I have heard of US troops carrying an AK-47 for the possibility of using captured ammo, but this was due to the limitations of how much ammo they could personally carry, not any actual supply shortages.

Now they seem to be sticking with the story, which is probably a bigger gamble than they realize.  I think if those kinds of shortages really had happened the way they're described, someone would have tried to address them by now, rather than feeding them to a Democratic presidential candidate.

The Devil is always in the details.  So much of the ... platform ... worldview ... whatever you want to call it, of the left depends on a fuzzy, sort of plausible spin on subjects and statements in which the actual details matter, yet are oddly unimportant to, and unexplored by, the view holder.

Sometimes its appears deliberate, as in the Times hit piece on McCain.  The points in the story, taken one at a time in a kind of unfocused view, are at least colorably true.  The implication, never quite spelled out, remains unsupported and when viewed critically, falls apart..

In Obama's case, I just chalk it up to not understanding the military and hearing about this tail second hand, he gets the benefit of the doubt, the NYT, not so much.

The left has a habit of claiming victory when some small detail is corroborated.

I'm glad you noticed this and called it out.  Too many on the right just go along with it and that's aggravating.  Jamil Hussein was a perfect example; we knocked that guy off the agitprop beat and proved most of his stories were BS, yet some took the fact the AP corroborated some part of the story and countered some claims (he probably existed, counter to speculation, though under another name) as a defeat.

"Vote Vets"

LOL- I saw a snarky lib editorial in a local rag here in PA smearing the GOP, claiming that the GOP are liars b/c they claim "no veterans support congressman Patrick Murphy"

The snarky dousches proof of the lie?

He googled a group called "vote vets"- who strongly support Congressman Murphy!

No mention of the uhhh, "affiliation" of vote vets.

Either he was truly too dumb to know- or hes a filthy liar like the rest of his fellow hacks and shills.

Color me impressed- an anti war democrat veteran organization supports an anti war democrat veteran!!!!!

63 So let me get this straight.

If you point out that combat soldiers are often forced to train and fight without important pieces of equipment that they are supposed to have, that means you don't "support the troops."

But if you call these combat soldier liars and insist that they have all the equipment they need -- even when they don't -- that is a sure sign that you "support the troops."

Just checking.

68 carrying an AK-47 for the possibility of using captured ammo

The AK-47 and its ammo are both heavier than an M16/M4/CAR and its ammo.  I have a folding stock AK and a CAR/M4.  The AK loaded up with 30rnd mags is a LOT heavier than the CAR loaded up.  Unloaded metal AK mags are significantly heavier than the ours too, its not just the relative size of the bullets that porks up.

I've never seen an AK-74 type up close, so I can't comment much on that variation.  I understand it uses lighter lower caliber ammo and the mags should be lighter as well..

69 I might suggest those on the blogosphere upset about this story would be better suited directing their ire at those responsible for this problem, which is certainly not new.

------

Would 'those responsible for the problem' include people in Congress voting against funding combat operations?

Geez. Shortages in wartime, who would have ever expected that. In other breaking news, CNN is reporting that water is wet!

1 - you can never have too many weapons unless they're non functional or poor quality. Picking up an enemy MG here and there is useful and AK's are fun!.

2 - a number of guys I know who have been over have told me that their pre deployment training was not to a full combat level. Simulators, practice exercises, and not enough live fire practice. You can never have enough practice.

3 - every guy I've spoken to who has come back has said that their replacements were not up to speed and were not well prepared. Lax security practices...that kind of thing.  New guys have a much higher casualty rate. It's a given.

Much of this is simply slant. The military can always do more. But they are stretched thin and doing an incredible job with the tools given them. We're fighting 2 wars thousands of miles apart and yet most of the civilian population has very little contact with the realities of the military. The politicians run their agendas and play their games while the consequences come home in body bags and medevacs.

It seems at best Tapper's report confimrs some details of Obama's claim but also confimrs so much of what critics in th eblogosphere point out. At best, he gets a half right.

More importantly, how many of the troops that left PCS'ed or moved on to new assignments and then ended up in Iraq while with their new units. I serve3d in the 6th ID Light and can tell you that we never had 39 troops in any of our platoons. Never even close. 24 was just about the average for us. And as far as the lack of armored humvees in theather and train with, well it make sense that they would be in Iraq where they were needed as ashcanicatn was pretty low intensity at that time.

Perhaps most important to me, this story is five years old. Things have changed dramatically since then.

Posted by: Opinionator at February 22, 2008 07:26 PM (j2wCU)

73 Wish I had time to check the net at work so I could get in on this earlier.

1.  The Army doesn't have rifle platoons.  They have infantry platoons.  Rifle platoons are in the Marines, not the Army.  Small bitch, but nonetheless.

2.  After 8 years in the Army, I never once saw a flatbed HMMWV.  I saw plenty of M998s (used for troop/cargo carrying) but it is certainly not a flatbed.

3.  I find it difficult to believe that a unit would deploy at 61% strength.

And as far as training with non-armored humvees is the states it could always be worse. When we trained with the Canadians in the 80's they used LAV's to simulate tanks as all their Leopard I's were in Germany. They did not have one tank in the Regiment we trained with in Alberta.

76 So this asshat has equipment shortages and instead of going up the chain of command and taking care of his soldiers he talks to a reporter and demands that no one know who he is???  No balls to go on the record officially but he'll take an enemy, non-coalition vehicle and drive it around Afghanistan and hope that none of the 100's of UAV's, A-10's, B-52's, AH-64's, P-3's, etc won't notice and blow them to smithereens!???  This story reeks!!!  If it was true, this Captain should have no problem coming forward and publicly announce said shortages.  He would be a media darling and nothing bad would happen to him.

Posted by: CDR M at February 22, 2008 08:03 PM (TJoU6)

77

On troop shortages, guess what? It happens. The Army deploys units as BCTs. Brigade combat teams. All units train up before deployment. If they are found to be non-combat ready, they don't deploy. Mind you I'm talking about combat units. Not combat support/service units.

My medical platoon was short eight medics, we were still rated combat ready. But before we deployed, we took medics from our two sister battalions to be at full strengh. And this was to Afghanistan. In 2002-2003.

We didn't have any uparmors. We didn't have the problem with IEDs then. We never heard of them.

We captured tons of enemy weapons and munitions. Some Russian, some Chinese, some other. Hell we even captured some muzzle loaders left over from the Brittish.

But we never used them in combat.

And one other thing. I do recall using a locals "jingle truck" for transport once. If you've been to Afghanistan, you'll know what I'm talking about.

To clarify about taking medics from other battalions.

My bat. from 1st brigade was attached to 3rd brigade for deployment. The two remaining bats. from 1st bde and the bat. from 3rd bde. replaced us eight months later.

Any questions I'll do my best to answer.

I caution against taking a "this couldn't happen because doctrine is this" approach, and using that as the BS indicator.  I think that Obama was telling him the truth - he id hear from a captain some stuff.  Whether it means what he thinks it means, and is certainly implying that means, well, that is something else entirely.

During Desert Shield/Desert Storm (okay, I am old like PA, and admittedly the Army does stuff somewhat differently like the BCT) lower priority units had personnel reassigned to deployed units in onesie-twosies.  I was in Italy, and we weren't a deployable unit (TDA not MTOE for people who get that), had a friend with a transportation platoon, sent ALL of his drivers to Saudi Arabia.  But his platoon didn't go, just all his drivers, 8 in total, I think.  Later, afterward during Provide Comfort, I had to attach 4 of my soldiers to round out another EOD detachment that deployed.

So it seems perfectly reasonable that this CPT (then LT) had a platoon that was in garrison and had people reassigned, and then the rotation order cam for his unit, and he hadn't been replenished.  He didn't have his complete allotment.  Boo-effing-hoo, LT, there were LTs commanding infantry companies in Korea with 85% casualties and they still drove on and did their mission.  So man up and do your job, you go to war with the platoon you have, not the platoon you wish you had.  Bitching and moaning is a soldiers perogative, if they aren't bitching there is something really wrong.  But he obviously has some political axe to grind if he is taking this problem to a candidate for President.  Because the President is manning your platoon, right numbnuts?

Jeebus.  You have a job.  Do it.

85 Ok, I can see everyone here is quick to jump all over this story and assume it's another Beauchamp, etc. My question is, aside from this anecdote, What do you think about the bigger issue? That the war in Iraq is diverting much needed resources away from Afghanistan, which Al-Qaeda has taken advantage of to rebuild its operation to a point where it's stronger than it's been at any point in the last 6 years?

Posted by: drill at February 23, 2008 01:21 AM (gNp5F)

Besides, what's the context here?  If Obama is trying to say the troops aren't being supported properly now and then supports his point with info from five years ago isn't that kind of, you know, dishonest?

Ace,

Another tour de force.  And the comments, well, awesome.  You guys who have been over there, thank you.  And I mean that sincerely.  This coming from a guy who did a couple of tours in 91-92 to the shithole sandbox on merchants.  It was bad enough then but now is something different altogether.  Speaking as someone who's seen improvisation in peacetime, it really doesn't surprise that our military has had to do similar during war.

I am embarrased to say that I got the "Ronny, Bobby, Ricky and Mike" reference without clicking the link.  That's unconscionable but it's also true.

Listening to Obama makes me cringe.  I'd truly like to vote for the guy and would but for his naivete on all things related to foreign policy and the military.  He seems to view the military as a vessel needing to be recalled to home port and loaded down with health care and welfare, never to be sent from this hemisphere for any reason again.

Yea, this Lt/Capt is probably a VoteVets mouthpiece.  Doesn't denigrate his service but certainly calls into question his motivation.  God help us if he's to be CinC.

91 "Jeebus.  You have a job.  Do it. "

Hey hotshot, guess what - he did do his job. He was over in Afghanistan and he's still serving, which is a far sight more than Ace ever did.  I'd say you people are loathsome, but that would be giving you too much credit.  You scream about him not giving his name, when the minute he did you'd ruin his life no matter how accurate his story may be.

Read Phil Carter's blog, he gets verification from two others who served in Afghanistan, and indicates that based on his service in Iraq, which is also someplace Ace never saw fit to serve, Obama's premise that Iraq diverted assets from Afghanistan is true.

You guys get your panties in a bunch thinking Obama is blasting the military when if you listened to what he was saying he is blasting Bush's judgment, not criticizing the military at all.  You may not like it but there's a great deal about Bush's judgment, or lack thereof, that is worth criticizing.  But what the heck, onward and upward with the Keyboard Commandos.

It was in 2003 that I was in command of an Infantry Battalion in central Afghanistan. Originally we had 800 men but slowly one by one they were all transferred to other units. Most were sent to the IRS, it was tax time and they needed additional auditors. Those that were weren’t sent the IRS got sent to the National Parks Service. Yellowstone was hell; I heard one guy got mauled by a bear.

The equipment shortage was even worse. We were all out of chain gun rocket launchers. We had to kill all 100,000 innocent Iroquois civilians mostly with our bear hands. Sometimes we used rocks and knives but mostly we had to strangle them. I saw one fellow pick up an Afghan child turn him upside down and put his penis in his mouth, just to survive to the next day. One fellow, Corporal Ted I believe his name was, turned to killing civilians by drawing them in the Euphrates. He got the idea when he swerved in his (unarmored) Bradley fighting vehicle, to hit a dog and ended up in a river. The innocent civilian he had kidnapped in order to rape never made it back to the surface. After that Ted knew the best way to deal with the locals was to "take 'em for a ride".

I ended up fighting the entire Taliban myself unarmed of course. The only weapon I had were my wits my fists and my trustie camel "Susan". but that is a story for a different day.

Ace did not write that, I did, and your transference of a chickenhawk argument to him is just silly.  I wrote it, and I am a West Point graduate and a veteran, so you can put your chickenhawk where the sun don't shine.

Read my whole post, you will see that I allow that Obama may have heard such a story, and that the story may even be true on the whole if not in the particulars, BUT - that it doesn't mean what Obama is implying that it means.  I also am saying that the guy who took his chickenshit story and peddled it to a Presidential candidate with the intent (honestly, why would you take this story to an opposition candidate, do you think, retroactively, he'll add troops to the platoon?) of creating a national scandal out of his platoon's manning, he needs to STFU and do his job.

Posted by: blaster at February 23, 2008 08:26 AM (7Q1rc)

96 One of the lessons of Vietnam was the understanding that unit cohesion was a key element to its effectiveness. Pulling guys out of units really hurt the sense of  commitment soldiers felt towards each other. Units therefor are kept together except in only the direst of situations. Obama is strait up lying here. He is making a claim he thinks is plausible based on his misunderstanding of how the military works.

We should not be fighting wars to just to fight wars. Obama said we should use our military to protect our security and interest.Instead of nit picking on word smithing we needs to make decisions on what our strategy is. I am a strong supporter of the Military. I believe a primary purpose of our government is to protect us. I believe if you are going to fight a war, you fight to win. However you need to know what win means.  I admit I never thought we should have gone into Iraq, we should have stayed focused on Afghanintan. Was told the mission was accomplished years ago. However we have created a problem there, and we do need to resolve it. However other then provided billions to Bush investors, I do not know what our Irag strategy is. I do not think we have one. But at any cost we need to do all we can to protect our troops wherever they are.

Obama has my vote. I believe can can think strategically instead of just minor tactical manuvers.

101 Iraq didn't attack us ...

Same old canard.

Riddle me this ... is Al Quada the ONLY terrorist adversary we faced in 2001?

If a few dozen guys, with about $1M and the hospitality of goatherders to back them up, were able to perpetrate the events of 11 September 2001 ... then why did it make ANY sense to continue to allow someone who had proven he shared their attitudes on life and liberty, to remain in ABSOLUTE control of a resource-rich, technically-modern nation?

What would have reliably prevented Saddam Huessein from providing -- possibly with plausible deniability -- the financial/logistical/technical leverage to AQ, or another terrorist group, to make an even more lethal and disruptive sequel to that day, at a time and place of his choosing?

Containment was still a very leaky bucket for such prevention ... and would not have lasted forever, in any case.  Not to mention that the mass graves in Iraq would have continued to fill.

Or, would the Big 0 and those of you who support him simply be willing to wait until he provided proof of his intentions ... in the form of dead bodies?

IMO, you all suffer from the myopia of 20th-century conventional wisdom, which sees an assertive America as a greater threat to world peace than totalitarian thugs and fanatics who could leverage wealth and technology as force multipliers, and exploit the open societies and freedom-of-movement that makes global civilization work, to disrupt it and further their agenda.

Your fear of America -- or disdain for one that is led in a way that is not submissive enough to the least-common-denominator of international relations to suit you -- blinds you to the real threats that existed well before 11 September 2001.

Some of those threats, the Big O is willing to talk with, apparently in good faith ... not confront, which historically the only reliable way to defeat such thugs and fanatics.  OTOH, he has stated that is willing to bomb the territory of a nominal ally, with no consideration of their position.

We tried it his, and your, way .. and the threats grew stronger.

Now ... yes, AQ has gotten stronger in the Afghan-Pakistan frontiers ... just as the Japanese were able to dig in deeper on certain islands in WWII ... because MacArthur hopped around them.  They were eventually left to die on the vine.

So what if AQ is stronger there ... if they cannot project power beyond that area?  As long as we maintain our resolve, they will eventually be defeated there, too -- either by attrition, or by being compressed into smaller and smaller areas.

bin Laden (if he is still alive) is reduced to couriers for command and control, lest a satphone call lead to a life-ending delivery via PredEx (Predator Express).  Not an effective way to run a modern war ... for it is real easy for a determined opponent (that is, as long as  y'all don't deceive us into sapping that determination) to get inside his OODA loop under such conditions.

This is far more effective "containment" than anything we were able to impose on Saddam, BTW.

OTOH, we and the Iraqi people have already handed them a far more stinging defeat in Iraq, in terms of their ability to project power ... for it is the PEOPLE OF THE MIDDLE EAST, not just the Great Satan, that are rising up against them.

But to acknowledge that, is to give our current President credit for facilitating that outcome ... and that is the Unpardonable Sin in the eyes of many.

102 Barack Obama said this:

"I heard from a Army captain, who was the head of a rifle platoon, supposed to have 39 men in a rifle platoon. Ended up being sent to Afghanistan with 24, because 15 of those soldiers had been sent to Iraq. And as a consequence, they didn't have enough ammunition; they didn't have enough humvees. They were actually capturing Taliban weapons because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current commander in chief. Now that's a consequence of bad judgment, and you know, the question is on the critical issues that we face right now who's going to show the judgment to lead."

A number of bloggers on the right went ballistic. Couldn't be true. No how. No way. Curt at Flopping Aces: "I’m gonna call shenanigans (codeword for he is lying through his teeth)". The (cough) Astute Pundit: "Obama at Texas Debate: Liar, Dupe, Or Enemy Propagandist?" (I'll take 'Enemy Propagandist' for five, Alex...)

While this was going on, Jake Tapper (yes, I know) actually spoke to the Captain in question, who confirmed the story. Later, NBC did so as well. And Phil Carter adds:

"In light of my experience in Iraq, Sen. Obama’s comments last night are eminently believable. Sen. Obama is also absolutely right to use this anecdote as a critique of the administration's decision to go to war in Iraq. It is incontrovertible that the war in Iraq diverted scarce military resources (manpower, equipment, etc.) from Afghanistan to Iraq. The cost for that diversion was paid by America's sons and daughters, and our Afghan brethren, who continue to fight in Afghanistan against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. We owe our troops better."

In light of this, the best response would seem to be Tom Maguire's: "As a proud member of the Right Wing Noise Machine (or are we now the Freak Show?) I can only say "Ouch"." Curiously, Tom hasn't had a lot of company. Rusty Schackleford's take is more common among the conservative blogs I've read:

"Tapper called the "Captain" and asked him to verify his own story.

How, exactly, is it "verifying" anything by simply asking the same source if his story is true? This isn't the testimony of one source verifying the testimony of another source. This is two people reporting the testimony of a single source!
No one is accusing Obama of making the story up. We are accusing the "Captain" of making stuff up---or, at the very least, using selective pieces of information in order to lend credence to the bad war/good war theory. Obama then uses an untrue story to further the narrative which he hopes will get him elected."

Curt at Flopping Aces again:

"Of course with the “Captain” remaining anonymous its hard to come right out and say the man is lying since the Pentagon doesn’t have the particulars such as the dates, units, and other important info. With him remaining in the shadows its easier for Barack and his pal Tapper to just say “believe us” because well, just because."

To which I can only say: wow. Or, as John Cole put it:

"Now granted, Phil Carter has some military knowledge, so I would take this a grain of salt when you compare it to the vault of information these bloggers have procured over a lifetime of arranging GI Joe dolls while watching betamax copies of Uncommon Valor in the basement apartment they rent from their parents. I know it is a tough call, but I am gonna go with Obama, Tapper, and Phil Carter on this."
But besides that, consider two things. First, the bloggers I quoted above are accusing this unnamed Captain of lying. It's not exactly clear why they think the Captain lied, or why he would go on lying to various TV networks, but that's what Curt, Rusty, and the gang seem to think. And why do they think this? For the most part*, they cite claims like this (from Ace): "Milbloggers say the platoon is the basic organic unit of the army, and troops are never picked out of a platoon to serve elsewhere", or this (from one of Steve Spruiell's correspondents): "units as small as platoons are not pulled apart like that." That is: claims that the sorts of things the Captain described never happen.

I think that any claim of the form "X never, ever happens" are generally dubious when made about an organization as large as the US Army. They are especially dubious when made about the Army in wartime. Sometimes you can dismiss them out of hand. If, for instance, some Captain were to say that when he was in iraq, the troops under his command would turn into little bunny rabbits and scamper away into the shrubbery, skepticism would be in order. But when someone who has served in combat says something like: my platoon was stripped of some of its men, or: we were short of ammunition, that's really not something you can just assume is a lie in the absence of any further evidence at all.

I have no particular investment in the idea that this soldier is telling the truth. I don't see any good reason to doubt him, but some people lie, and for all I know, he might be one of them. I do, however, care a lot about the idea that we should not impugn someone's honor absent a good reason to do so. And that's what Rusty Shackleford, Ace, et al have done. They are willing to trash someone's good name because what he says doesn't fit their political narrative. And that's despicable.

***

* Footnote: A Pentagon spokesman later said that he found the Captain's story implausible, though since he didn't know the Captain's name or any of the details, he couldn't say for sure. Most of the blogs posts I've read accusing the Captain of lying were written before this spokesman appeared; Curt's at Flopping Aces is the exception here.

103 It really doesn't make any difference how many soldiers the platoon had as long as the mission it was assingned was comensurate with its capabilities.  The key questions for the captain then are 1) were you assigned missions outside your platoon's capabilities?  2) did you inform the chain of command of the situation?  3) at what point was your platoon finally wiped out because they were misused?

Posted by: Doug at February 23, 2008 01:15 PM (Pg8gw)

104 It's ridiculous to claim that a statement that clearly said that an under manned rifle platoon in Afghanistan was capturing weapons so that they could fight is actually TRUE because Obama explained it poorly....  or misunderstood it....  but probably a real guy talked about stuff that really happened.... and Obama screwed it up, and that means that what Obama said was really true....

It was misleading and nothing about it to defend it takes away the fact that it was misleading.   It implies things that aren't true and weren't even true in 2003.

I agree with those who say that what is the most worrying isn't the false implications but the fact that Obama, and his staffers, apparently didn't know the difference.

"They were actually capturing Taliban weapons because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current commander in chief."

This is not an innocent mistake.  This clearly and *absolutely* is NOT NOT talking about weapons to train with.     The things about the story that ring the BS bells are things that Obama was completely oblivious to.   He doesn't know what "smells" wrong, and doesn't have staffers who knows what "smells" wrong, but he's going to come up with the RIGHT answers?   He's going to get people on his staff who know enough to come up with the RIGHT answers?

Really?

106 OK, I'm going to call some major bullshit on some of this. I mean units get tasked for people, even in theater. We always had a squad gone from the company on rotation to secure the battalion main, we had guys gone on R&R, we had given up five guys from the company before the invasion started to augment the security and doorgunners for Aviation Brigade, but the notion you're using jingle trucks and DShK's because you don't have anything else, I have a hard time seeing that as anything other than a stopgap measure.

Then again, I haven't done Afghanistan. I've done Iraq twice, 2003-4 and 2005-6. You lefty douchebags can call me most anything but a chickenhawk. I'm still in.

1.  Perhaps infantry platoons are somehow treated differently from the rest of the military, but when a deploying unit is short of, for instance, infantrymen, then that number of infantrymen are re-assigned to the deploying unit, making up its personnel shortfalls in a process sometimes called "cross-leveling."

Is it ideal to break-up a platoon team that has worked and trained well together? Absolutely not. Is it important that deploying units be as up-to-strength as possible so that breaking up the teams of non-deploying units is the lesser evil? Yes, it is.

Does the military's personnel management system occasionally fail to grasp that it is intended to serve the military's needs rather than the reverse? You betcha.

What I find odd, no, unconscionable, is that this would be done to a platoon that was itself deploying. WTF?

2.  Would a local commander, at the far end of a very, very long supply chain ever use captured weapons and ammunition to supplement, augment, or make-up shortfalls in his own unit's armament? Regulations Be Damned, you can bet your next paycheck he would (or he should find another line of work, where his overscrupulous attention to regulations written far from the battleground can be indulged without being to the detriment of his soldiers).

3.  Is the provision of the range-time, weaponry, and appropriate stocks of ammunition for troops preparing to deploy a priority? Yes, it is. Is providing those same items to units already in the field a somewhat higher priority? Yes, again. Does this (or other factors, to include negligence or incompetence up the chain of command all the way to the House Appropriations Committee) sometimes mean that units don't get all the necessary (nay, required) training resources before deploying? Yup. That happens. It was downright notorious, especially for deploying Reserve and Guard units leading up to OIF1, so I'm unsurprised that it could still be happening. No enough heads (if any) were made to roll for these failings back in 2002-3, so there's apparently no downside. After all, once the troops are deployed, they're no longer the concern of the commander of the Stateside training base.
