The Navy Shoots...The Navy Hits

Hell yes.

A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available.

It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

Two officials said the missile was launched successfully. One official, who is close to the process, said it hit the target. He said details on the results were not immediately known.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission for the Navy was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 1,000 pounds of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

Danger Room has a look at the narrowness of the shooting window and the process that led to the order to shoot being given.

The U.S. military will only have seconds per day to shoot down an ailing spy satellite. And the decision to fire will be made by the Secretary of Defense himself.

At a Pentagon press conference today, an unnamed "senior military official" briefed reporters on the details on the satellite take out attempt. "Each day there will be one window," he said. "It will only exist for a matter of tens of seconds, and so you have to be at exactly the right place, exactly the right time, and all criteria have to line up exactly right."

And then basically a bullet has to hit a bullet a hundred plus miles in space.

Remember, the Democrats want to kill missile defense because it, like the surge, doesn't work.

Update [Ace]: I was just going to post this.

Fuck it, I think I will anyway.

Nah. Already did that six times this week.

9 But all those "Concerned Scientists" like John Pike have claimed for years that this was physically impossible.

Are we sure the video they'll show us wasn't shot on the same set they used for the moon landings? Maybe Michael Moore and Oliver Stone can do a film exposing this hoax.

14 Not that this why we blew it up (...maybe...), but this proves we are able destroy near earth satellites at will.  Since spy and reconnaissance satellites are all near-earth, this is quite a capability.

Unlike the Chinese, who must rely on a small number pre-positioned launch sites and wait for the satellites to pass over them, we could pre-position our navel assets to destroy all our targets at once.  I'm not sure if anyone knows for sure our capability to destroy high orbiting communication sats, but you have to think we could almost as easily since they are stationary.

I'm not sure why'd we want to do any of that, but it's nice to know you can.

18 I remember back in the late 80's many, many prominent scientists lined up and explained how 'Star Wars' missile defense could never work. I knew that this was bullshit at the time even though I couldn't explain technical reasons why it was. One of the more laughable claims was that missile defense would require more computational power than the U.S. could ever produce to track and hit an incoming target. Thanks to Moore's law, the average teenager now has more than enough processing power to track incoming missiles sitting in their Xbox.

38 It's kind of interesting how the missile-defense thing has worked out in regards to the armed services and slicing the pie.  For years it was an Air Force monopoly -- they did all the research, and for a while started floating trial balloons about calling themselves the "Aerospace Force."

Then someone in the Navy noticed that they've already got several dozen mobile missile-launching platforms with phased-array radars factory standard.  The Navy is becoming the lead operational agency in missile defense.

Prediction:  the next satellite intercept will be done by the Air Force.  Just because.

51 It is very tricky dong what the Navy just did.  It was a remarkably clean hit -- if the target had been an inbound nuclear warhead, it would no longer be operational.

Preliminary reports indicate the hydrazine tank was hit but it could be a day or two before they know how effectively.

This spectacular shot was from an operational Navy cruiser out in the open Pacific ocean -- using a missile essentially as it comes off-the-shelf.   They did have the luxury of waiting for the "perfect" time but the system was not intended for this type of challenge.  The fact it was capable of such and was successful on the first try speaks volumes about our defense capabilities.

We had the technology, we just needed the political will to build systems like this.

Thank you, Ronald Reagan.  Every year your legacy simply grows larger.
