Obama: "This is Not a Big Deal"

Referring to the charges of "plagiarism" being alleged by Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson. I agree and I can't believe how big a deal this is. (For example, it's all over the news and memeorandum.)

Wolfson says that Obama "lifted" the words and ideas of Obama-supporting Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. Patrick responds that he and Obama often exchange ideas. An Obama spokesman counters with this video of Clinton "borrowing" Obama's lines, including "Fired Up and Ready to Go ."

This isn't the type of accusation that actually sways voters; it's more likely just to exacerbate tensions between Obama and Clinton supporters. Wolfson should have thought twice about bringing it up. (Not that I'm complaining. Let them duke it out.) Obama is going to come out looking better than Clinton when it's over, given that Patrick says "we do that all the time" and Obama says "I forgive you, Hillary." It just looks petty.

MORE: Seriously, I'm not sure why Wolfson would even bother talking about this. It's not like they're going to be able to portray Obama as an idiot who couldn't come up with his own stuff. Obama's way too smart for that inference to stick.

Is it possible that Wolfson woke up in the morning, realized that he had nothing negative to say about Obama to the morning press gaggle, and this is the best he could come up with?

2 This isn't a big deal. Neither is Obama's habit of lifting ideas from Karl Marx, either.

3 This is as much of a big deal as Romney using a landscaping firm that hired illegals.  If anything, this nonsense will make Hillary look bad, sorta like Rudy looked bad for harping on Romney for his "sanctuary mansion."  Politicians who badmouth other politicians for minor crap look like jerks for doing so.

If Patrick doesn't care, why should anyone else? As far as "hooks" go, I know there are huge volumes of them that attys use routinely.

6 Stay classy bitchy, Clinton campaign.

Why would anyone trust the press at this point? Obama looked at the public and realized that he could win a few votes if he:

-made stupid people feel good ("I also believe in hope")

-offered himself as the "change" candidate (sort of like W. Bush the "outsider")

-pull in the african-american vote (vote for me, my dad was from Kenya)

-claim that he isn't another cynical politician

-had he press in his corner (Who would want to stop a politician whose father was from Kenya. He also makes us feel good and it changes the world somehow if he wins.)

Is it possible to be cynical about cynicism?

I don't care that Patrick doesn't care.  It's still dishonest even if the person you are lifting from is a friend/supporter.  I think this is a decent score by team Clinton, undermining Obama's rhetorical skills, which are the main thing he has going for him.

It also serves to highlight the Obama/Patrick link.  Patrick was a similar empty vessel, and he hasn't exactly been setting the woods on fire as the gov in Mass.

Posted by: buzz at February 18, 2008 05:20 PM (kwhut)

9

Once again it seems Obamessiah is untouchable.  His main attraction is his rhetoric and if he is using others recent rhetoric without attribution it seems to me that he should be called on this.  Plagiarism is not based on whether you had tacit permission or not, its whether you hold out those words as your own.

Instead of charging Obama with plagiarism, she should have just saved it to use as a counterpunch in a snarky remark.  Such as,  If you missed Mr. Obama's speech, you can catch a repeat of it delivered by Patrick Deval in 2006.

This is nothing- Patrick is in his corner; it's like suggesting that he plagarized from his own speechwriter.

However if they're going to give each other more ammo for a circular firing squad, I wouldn't get in the way.

13

So, if they have such a common vision of the future that their words and thoughts are interchangeable, isn't it fair to look at Patrick's time in office as a preview to an Obama administration?

Be afraid, be very afraid.  Particularly if you are a Democrat.

Right?

16 And I noticed that, now that the writers are back, they're hard at it going through the "Dole is old" joke cue cards from '96 and whiting out "Dole" and writing in "McCain."

I'm still waiting for one to come up un-updated, and see Leno saying, "I'm not saying Bob Dole is old, but...."

I'll tell you what the big deal is:

His dumbass wife claims TODAY is the FIRST time she's been proud of this country.

She wasn't proud when she learned about Iwo Jima, Gettysburg, D-Day, Inchon, the American Revolution, the telephone, the automobile, the first man on the moon, the Leis and Clark expedition, Bataan, the Battle of the Bulge, the Wright brothers, etc.

She didn't feel any pride until she made the cover of Newsweek.

Stupid fucking bitch.

22 Having endured the Patrick campaign, it isn't much of a surprise, really. Both Patrick and Obama are given to the same flowery prose that feels good (if you've given yourself over to be swayed by such pap) without leaving the slightest trace of substance.

Patrick's campaign slogan was "Together We Can." We can what?? Nobody bothered to ask. They were feeling just too darn snugly. Obama seems to have determined that if he uses the words "hope," "change," or "future" enough, he can lure enough people who are easily distracted by shiny objects to elect him, without the slightest clue as to how he plans to bring any of this miraculous change about.

Posted by: red speck at February 18, 2008 08:16 PM (J5wUw)

23 This does look petty. And girl (I'm talking about Hillary!), if that's all you've got, maybe you better ask yourself why you're in this thing, because for damn sure we'll be asking that ourselves. Maybe Sean Hannity can pull your virtual nuts out of the fire, but I think you're about to be marginalized. And be kind to the lamps, it ain't their fault.

So all he has going for him is his new message of hope? We now find out that his message consists of another person's old campaign message of 2006. Wouldn't that put a chink into his authenticity as a person of change?

Weird for me to say, but I agree with Lou Dobbs when he says, "show me the instance where patrick used obama's words." Plus, just look at Patrick's pathetic job as governor after one Mitt Romney as things to come in an Obama presidency.

Also, Michelle, as your husband says..WORDS MATTER

Posted by: notropis at February 18, 2008 10:34 PM (xrmzx)

32 Let me tell you what Hillary accomplished with this. Sure it looks petty, but now Obama cannot use this speech any more. And it was a very effective one for him. But not any more. And he will also have to be quite careful in future speeches to properly vet them so no further accusations can be made. If he is found to do something similar again, it will make this petty incident look worse.

He may not be able to smoothly deliver a speech again.

33 This is much ado about nothing.  Big freakin' deal if some of his phrases are taken from someone else.  The Engllish language has been around for so long, there's a good chance that about anything has been said by someone else.  For instance, I am pretty sure that Ace has said, "Does this look infected?"  Does that give him exclusive rights to that phrase?
