Inevitability: It Just Isn’t What It Used To Be

When this campaign started 7 or 8 years ago, the conventional wisdom was Hillary’s organization and fund raising prowess would swamp the Democratic field.

Well something funny happened on the way to her coronation…Barrack Obama showed up. Now he’s flush with cash and she’s dropping her own money into the coffers.

"Late last month Sen. Clinton loaned her campaign $5 million," Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said late yesterday, after he was first questioned about possible Clinton-self-financing in a conference call with reporters.

"The loan illustrates Sen. Clinton's commitment to this effort and to ensuring that our campaign has the resources it needs to compete and win across this nation," he added.

Her senior campaign staff is now working on a volunteer basis.

Obama meanwhile has already raised over $2 million dollars in the first week of February as a follow up to his $30 million take in January. And the most amazing thing?

...according to the Obama campaign, only 3 percent of his donors have given the maximum $2,300 donation for the primary.

…In contrast, Clinton raised about half of her money from donors who gave the maximum.

More striking, the report found that nearly half of Obama’s individual contributors in the fourth quarter of 2007 gave donations of $200 or less — amounts so small that the Federal Election Commission doesn’t even demand the givers be named on disclosure reports.

That my friends is one big donor base with a lot more in the well.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Hillary campaign finance story without the obligatory mention that some of the money she’s donating may come from sources that aren't quite kosher.

Meanwhile…John McCain is still going to be the Republican nominee.

3 I read elsewhere that Obama counts as "donors" people who pay online for T-shirts, hats, etc.  Even discounting a bit for this, though, that's a hell of a donor base.

Not so much tricky as sad.

If we had just wrapped up nominating a great good sufficient conservative last night, I'd be making popcorn and washing it down with a nice tall glass of schadenfreude while watching the Dems destroy themselves.

Alas, it is not to be.

I sent the following to ace, so I'll put this here as my comment, thus saving myself the effort of looking up words in the dictionary again:

How in the bag is the media? If Hillary has so much policy experience being in "public life" as a "political leader" for the last 30 years, then where does she get $5 million so easily?   http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20080206/cm_thenation/45281227   Will there be any effort at all to cover this topic? I mean it's easy to see a guy like Romney doing this; not only because he has so much, but it's so obvious where he got it. But what "businesses" or "investments" has had such a return for Hillary? The obvious assumption is Bill and his speaking engagements. But you'd have to ask to be sure. And in the asking comes the idea that Bill is trying to buy his way back into the WH, etc.   The point is, this is an obvious topic for political debate/discussion and/or journalistic investigation. Want proof? Wait for John McCain to do it and see how fast Anheuser Busch becomes a hot topic.       I don't know. Myabe she made bags of cash off her fabulously successful book. I'm sure many copies of her book were purchased by individual organizations who were in no way attempting to circumnavigate McCain-Feingold.

8 Call me stupid, an idiot, whatever you want...but I just made my first donation to Hillary. It's not huge, but I hope every little bit keeps her afloat. Why? She'd be the easiest to defeat come November.

Sure but five million is a lot less to Hillary than it is to us normal people.  Anybody who can make 100x her initial investment in cattle futures can't be too worried about the money.  Ahem.

Not only that, one wonders how many of those maxed-out donors were Chinese busboys, hairdressers, and other minimum wage employees.  Her actual donor base may be considerably smaller, even, than the numbers show.

Posted by: Eric at February 06, 2008 08:48 PM (eSqCK)

10 I think she and Bill both wrote books that earned them several million dollars...oh, and tons of illegal contributions. Can't believe I almost forgot that.

11 It seems that the Philadelphia Daily News has already declared Obama the winner of the general election. Big portrait, big print "Our Next President". No question mark needed.

I'm gonna say no, you bite me. i don't use question marks either, see!

12 Anyone a little curious about donations so small that the donors' names don't have to be disclosed? I know the FEC is currently defanged due to partisan bickering and lack of a quorom, but that seems like a pretty big campaign finance loophole.

Posted by: Shivv at February 06, 2008 08:53 PM (ZiA5L)

13 You know, I think that stuff about McCain selling out to the North Vietnamese during his "imprisonment" and spending the time in a Saigon appartment whoring and drinking Mai Tai's with Viet Cong officials is a big lie. Totally despicable lies.

But it does fit in with what we have since learned about his character given his betrayal of his wife, his party and, with his immigration bill, his country.

But I still condemn those lies which, despite having the whiff of truth, are horrible slanders.

Where the hell is this money coming from? You don't get millions of dollars from books unless you're JK Rowling, political books just don't sell enough. Nobody is gonna give you a multi-million dollar deal for your book even if you're Hillary Clinton.

The scuttlebutt in so-cal (orange county) is - there is this one big parcel of ocean front undeveloped property in Dana Point headlands - south of the Ritz off PCH, over looking the harbor. It was finally bought from the Irvine Co I think (don't know the finer specifics) anyway it's being developed now and the lots are supposedly being sold - The Schwarzenegger's, Bill Gates have bought lots and now the big scuttle is the Clintons have bought a lot - 8 million dollar lots - let that sink in just a bit , 8 mill just for the lot.

41 You have to give the Democrats props. They gave their people three solid liberal candidates to choose one, and one liberal superstar. They get a feast of filet mignon (or organic tofu sprouts, or whatever it is liberals consider a delicacy) and an endless dessert buffet. The Republicans gave us a shit sandwich.

And the worst part is, if we eat the shit sandwich, they're going to assume we like shit sandwiches... and it's all we're going to get from now on.

Posted by: V the K at February 07, 2008 06:28 AM (/0sRQ)

42 Oh for Christ's sake. How long are you pissy little pussies going to keep whinging? Remind me again how many "conservative" presidents Republicans have managed to get elected since Calvin Coolidge? I'll go ahead and tell you: one, Reagan. And he presided over huge Fed deficits, increases in social spending, immigraton amnesty, the list goes on.

So fucking man up and get over your tantrum. You didn't have a good candidate, the rest of the party disagrees with you. Romney spent a million dollars per delegate he won. He had early organization and huge money advantages, and he started fucking up right away in Iowa. This guy is supposed to be a great fiscal manager? Name one smart or successful thing he' done this campaign? Huckabilly has nearly the same delegate count  and spent a fraction of Romney's money. Romney ran THIRD in almost every Southern primary. A distant 3rd. And he had talk radio and a host of conservative endorsers in the bag and he still got his ass kicked.

Jesus, you guy don't really have a complaint here, since your hero Romney has never shown in actuality (remember, he was governor of Mass and tried to get elected Senator there, you don't do that without taking lefty stands) that he is a conservative. He talks a good game sure, but there is zero proof he believes any of that shit.

Nextly, its apparent he can't get elected dogcatcher in the US. He runs consistandly 20 points behind Clinton and MORE against Obama. He has no base of power, because his Mountain States Mormon base has so few eletoral votes. He'd get killed in the general, and probably lose some Southern states for the first time since '00. There is zero evidence ANY Dems would crossover for him.

But it would make you fucking whiny ass titty babies happier to go over the cliff, lose the SCOTUS, lose the war in Iraq, get god know what heinous legislation passed with no veto power, just because you have a personal hard on for McCain. Well fuck you nancies, you aren't conservatives, you weren't backing a genuine conservative and you never have, none of you who weren't alive for Calvin Coolidge so for Jesus titty fucking Christ's sake, get over your fucking selves. Hillary ADA rating 96% McCain 23%, yeah, they're carbon copies of each other, no difference at all.

Fucking babies.
Just because you want to commit suicide over some fake "ideals" don't expect sentient beings to follow your lead. Sit your ass home in Nov. 2 independents and a Democrat will probably cross over to make up for it for every one of you who does.

That' if Hillary is the nominee. I honestly don't know if ANYONE can beat Obama with a full head of steam in November. Its going to be tough. I wish Rove was still doing the dirty deeds for us.

McCain doesn't back some issues dear to conservatives, and he's got a big mouth.  But right now he's the only thing standing between us and Armageddon.  I'm not kidding.  Four (more likely eight) years of Hillary or Obama appeasing Iran when not actually aiding them, and we're going to be faced with a nuclear-armed terrorist state in control of the Persian Gulf.  We're going to see a new Holocaust in Israel.  When the oilfields burn we're going to see economic chaos worse than anything since the Black Death.

63 who says I'm trying to make friends? On the fucking internet, in a comments thread. I guess you suggest sucking up to political naifs, idiots and bitter fools who don't even know what they are pissed off about and have zero comprehension of history or politics. For the record, there has not been a doctrinaire conservative elected by the Republicans in very nearly a century. There have been damn few nominated, and the ones who were, were defeated soundly. In our lifetimes, which is really the most relevant thing, say we start with big government Nixon, amnesty signing and Dem Congress ham-strung Reagan, read my lips Bush I, and compassionate conservative Bush II who has, with the connivance of a Republican congress presided over the biggest expansion of government spending in the history of the world. Where was all this outrage then? The main thing everyone is pissed off about is ATTITUDE. The caller to rush thing above exemplifies it. The stupid ass "Suzanne" woman doesn't give one fucking REAL reason she doesn't like McCain except she feels he disrespected her. He fucking backs the WOT and the struggle in Iraq to the HILT. You saying there's no difference between him, Obama and Hillary on this? You think all 3 of them would name the same judges? Hillary ADA 96% John McCain 23%. I'm just sick of the fucking bandwagon whinging. And while I happen to AGREE wtih more liberal immigration policy, those of you basing all their outrage and refusal to back McCain on this main reason are fucked, running, because its coming, Democrat or Republican, and its the right thing to do, and its going to happen, whether you like it or not. You're on the wrong side of history here. As I like to say, you better pipe down about demanding people "assimilate" to your particular standards and opinions. Its you sorry fucks who are going to get assimilated in less than a generation. I have no problem with the culture changing, it always has with new influxes of immigrants. There is a major tone of racism and bigotry to the nativist cant about immigration. Its wrong and its not going to stand, wall or no wall, millions of Mexicans are going to become Americans, fairly, cheaply and in a timely fashion. Sit your asses home on election day, and IF McCain wins, and you lose that gamble, your far right dogmatic conservative theory that "you can't win without the 'base'" will finally have been shot to hell, where it belongs. You AREN'T the fucking base, obviously. Your man got his ass handed to him. You are as far outside the mainstream as John Edwards was on the left. But I encourage you to wallow in your stupidity and anger, because it keeps you ineffective. Why the fuck would I want any of those McCain haters and xenophobes are my friend? There's no convincing the worst of them anyway because they are rationally and politically retarded. I'm glad Slublog, for one, took my advice and moved on to the VP fight, which is the next important step. Let's just see how much McCain feels he has to placate those who will not be placated. I'm going to predict he says fuck it, and goes for his best interest, which doesn't include nativists.
