I neither praise, nor denigrate the man. He is what he is: a meglomaniacal horse's ass. Petulant, obnoxious, and grossly over-rated as a coach, Knight's teams managed to win almost two-thirds of their games! Genius! And he did so with a demeanor most closely associated with a pitcher of cold spit.

True, he passed Dean Smith for the most Division I coaching victories--although it took Knight 41 seasons (and an extra 100 games) to do so. Along the way, his Indiana program managed to alienate everyone who wasn't actually from Indiana (state motto: "Pull My Finger"), as well as producing such NBA greats as Isaiah Thomas, Steve Alford,...Isaiah Thomas...and...well, Isaiah Thomas anyway.

19 I recall when he got into a screaming match with Texas Tech's President at the supermarket.

I also met Bobby Knight at a fundraiser (he was the attraction). A very nice guy. Doesn't come across as the brilliant person he is, but he came across as very honest. I liked him, even though I knew he was a dickhead sometimes. His team never reached its potential, or was consistent, and I think bobby was a big part of the problem (but he's a hell of a lot better than me at that stuff!)

I think 65% of the aura was invented by the BS media who hates Bobby.

Great coach. Cared for his players and made them study and graduate. He instilled discipline and actually taught them. You'd think that would be more well-known.

However, Knight had no time for the media, so they hated him. They trashed him and cast him in a bad light whenever possible. If he had been "nice" (read: smarmy and sucking up), the media would have lapped him up and he'd have a 50,000-seat pavilion at Indiana with his likeness painted at center court.
