| Brief Cloverfield ReviewHaving seen it, I guess I have to review it. Let's call it three stars and the best giant-monster-destroys-a-city-movie ever, though there aren't too many worthies in that category. The actors were decent and the characters non-annoying -- which makes it unlike the Blair Witch Project. I'm not sure why the movie works, though it does. It's not exactly scary. In fact, it's not really scary at all. Giant monsters aren't really horror monsters. There is some spectacle -- later in the movie you get a good look at the monster -- but I wouldn't call it a big spectacular popcorn movie like Independence Day either. While the characters were likable enough, I didn't really care if they lived or died (probably because the opening chyron, stating that the videotape was recovered from "Site US-447, Formerly known as "Central Park," hints that only the video recording, and not those shooting the video, survived), so it's not really an apocalyptic drama either. There's not even a Lovecraftian sense of the dread of a world gone mad, as the heroes behave too heroically to sell the idea that we're all helpless before this alien aberration (they're puny but brave, and bravery is inconsistent with helplessness), and the film is leavened with a fair amount of humor. I liked the humorous notes, but you can't sell fear and loathing when the Comic Relief is tossing out the silly laughs the same as he would in an Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick. Still, despite it not really pushing any of the typical buttons, it works very well. Having the camera right in the middle of the action, held by a frightened civilian, makes it seem more visceral and intense than a movie shot in the typical fashion. One sequence, for example, has the camera man ("Hud') caught between soldiers and the creature; rocketry and tracer bullets scream overhead while the monster tosses cars and trucks at his harassers. It's about as intense a sequence as you're likely to see in this sort of flick (or even a genuine war movie). Three issues I or others have had: Shaky camera. I think they oversell this in the beginning; some may feel motion sickness. I'm not sure if they restrain themselves later (having made the point it's a handheld camera) or else you just get used to it. But either way, once the attack begins, the camera isn't as distracting. 9/11 imagery. This didn't bother me but I know it bothers a lot of people. After a building is knocked down, the street fills with screams and a gray tsunami of pyroclastic ash. It would look precisely like the streets after the towers came down if not for the fact it's occurring at night. Again, your mileage may differ, but I didn't mind the metaphor. The monster. No, it's not Cthulhu. I didn't particularly like the the monster design -- it's got a strange body that didn't work for me, but a head with the standard arrangement of eyes, nostrils, mouth, leaving me to wonder how such a terrestrial-type brain-box wound up on an alien chassis -- and liked the creature a lot more in the early going, when I barely saw it and it was little more than suggestions in the darkness and ash. As the film goes on you see more of it, until you really see pretty much the whole enchilada. If they were going to show the monster, I wish they'd made it more bizarre and disturbing. As it is, it's merely ugly and ungainly. The ending. The movie ends abruptly. The main characters don't witness the military executing the "Hammerdown protocol," which is basically "destroy the city to kill the creature." We hear some of it happening but don't see it, and are left to guess if "Hammerdown" actually succeeded in taking the monster down. (I'm told that at the very end of the credits a filtered voice over the radio answers that question, but I couldn't make out what was said myself.) I have no real problems with the ending, given the fact that it would have violated the central stylistic choice of the director to make them far-off witnesses (mostly) and collateral damage, and I don't think a conventional ending where you see the final fight would have worked. So I didn't mind this, but be aware, you're not going to get a typical climax. One reviewer said the screenwriter had turned in only the first two acts of the script. (Scripts typically have three, where the third is the climax and resolution.) You're also not going to get an explanation. There is no backstory provided whatsoever; no wounded and half-mad scientists show up conveniently near the end of Act II to describe the abomination they discovered under the sea while drilling for oil, and no government broadcast pops up on tv to explain the nature of the menace. I liked that myself. Any explanation they could have provided would have been trite or stupid or both anyway, so what's the point? At any rate, the action all takes place over the course of eight hours, so pretty much no one would have been able to figure this out during the movie's timeframe anyhow. Those nits aside, I give it an unqualified recommendation. It works the whole way through, doesn't drag, and has a sense of wit and wonder about it. And the movie is so short (like 84 minutes) it doesn't have time to overstay its welcome. Not an all-time great, but an interesting experiment that works well.Related: David Thompson posts a strange BBC documentary on CIA research into the paranormal. A Synopsis: Pretty funny. I had a choice to see Cloverfield or There Will be Blood. I chose TWBB and I wish there had been a real Cloverfield monster to have killed me halfway through the movie.

No, it's not Cthulhu. I'm still waiting for a good screenplay and script plus I want 10% of gross box office and merchandise. Posted by: Mr. Cthulhu at January 20, 2008 04:09 PM (nPBIC) 3
"Shaky camera. I think they oversell this in the beginning;"
The camera is a lot worse in the beginning because Jason has it. When Jason hands it off to Hud, the camera is a lot steadier. It's a love it or hate it movie, for sure. People applauded yesterday in the theater when it was over. YMMV. Posted by: rightwingprof at January 20, 2008 04:11 PM (tuvZr) 4
I have a question which might be a little bit of a spoiler as its shown at the end.
Did anyone else notice in the final "flashback" what looked like something falling down into the water? Did I see that right and did anyone else catch it? Was that intended to be the subtle arrival of the monster? Posted by: buzzion at January 20, 2008 04:13 PM (O95dj) Posted by: ace at January 20, 2008 04:15 PM (SXBHu) 6
I've given up hope that the monster is a handpuppet or really bad papier mache with googly eyes. I still hate cgi and will never get over it. Actually, it sounds good, but I doubt I'll see it pre-dvd release.

buzzion, I didn't notice the splash, but I've read that it's supposed to be the Tagruato satellite falling to Earth. In the midst of recovery operations, the Tagruato team woke the monster, which had been sleeping off the coast for-freakin'-ever.
If there's going to be a sequel (which I wish there wasn't, but you know how it goes when something makes money), I'd prefer they do something with the Tagruato recovery team (Abyss meets Godzilla) than something after "the Coverfield Incident." I could have done without the longer looks at the creature at the end too, but I suppose it would be tough to sell a monster movie where people don't get at least one good look at the thing. Goddamn, though, is it ever terrifying the first couple times you get a glimpse of it. All writhing limbs and tail down there in the streets. They did a great job of hammering home the sheer sense of "holy shit what the fuck" people would be feeling. I may have to see this again. Posted by: Andrew at January 20, 2008 04:19 PM (u5kpU) 9
Without Raymond Burr narrating it makes no sense.

I'm told that at the very end of the credits a filtered voice over the radio answers that question, but I couldn't make out what was said myself. Suppose to be "it's still alive in reverse". I believe myself that it's "JJ Abrams is the devil and Hitler-worshipper", but I have yet to find more evidence. Kinda like how JJ Abrams needs to find more evidence of an actual story with acts, climax, complex characters, and a simple plot. As opposed to Malor's posting where... there was more colorful remarks from inebriated AoSHQ Moron *personnel* dealing with the simple impossibilities of the movie, you let the movie off quite easily Ace. Still sticking to recommending it for waiting until DVD. In the meantime, 28 Weeks Later is a whole lot better. Code Red > Hammertime. Posted by: TheEJS at January 20, 2008 04:32 PM (JyC8j) 12
Joanie,
The cgi is pretty good. You see it mostly from far away, plus the filmstock is sort of grainy (to look like non-professional videotape) so there's really none of that cartoonish stuff you see with so much cgi. Posted by: ace at January 20, 2008 04:54 PM (SXBHu) 13
If there's going to be a sequel (which I wish there wasn't, but you know how it goes when something makes money), I'd prefer they do something with the Tagruato recovery team (Abyss meets Godzilla) than something after "the Coverfield Incident." I believe Abrams mentioned one possibility of the sequel being about the same attack but from another camera. After seeing this I don't really know how well that would work, but you never know.
You know the whole reason for the statue of liberty's head in the street is because Abrams saw it in the poster for Escape from New York but was disappointed that it wasn't actually in the movie. Posted by: buzzion at January 20, 2008 05:07 PM (O95dj) 14
the final "flashback" what looked?
Slusho's son dreamed of becoming a fish, then a whale. He was seeing, Lucifer. The 'flashback' is him seeing, creating the monster from lucifer, creation is what lucifer messed with and was damned. Slusho's son created the monster by seeing it and then lucifer put it into creation. Someone was going to Japan and would figure this out, the monster is unleashed by Lucifer on America because of the embarrassment of creation in Japan, something Slusho's son was not really interested in doing. Godzilla has an episode where he is put in a cocoon by two moths(called and created, altered in creation during their egg stage, by two singing female things into things they were not; to fight Godzilla) and falls into the coast waters. Slusho may be the cacoon. The cacoon removed, Godzilla comes back to life as a butterfly, a creation of lucifer as seen by Slusho's son. A fish, a whale, a sea creature created from Godzilla who was a 'moth' larvae under water.

You'd think Stephen King would be able to figure this out. It's the dumbest part of all of his stuff. Overlook Hotel? Indian burial ground. Pet Sematary? Indian burial ground. I went off on a rant. "the filmstock is sort of grainy (to look like non-professional videotape)"
Kind of a big budget film dressed up to look low budget? I'd probably dig it. Sci-Fi's gotta have some b-movie quality to it, or I get turned off. I like when you can see the little bits of dust and hair that were stuck to the film, the crackling sound, the piss poor special fx, some bad acting thrown in, etc. Posted by: Joanie at January 20, 2008 05:23 PM (Yyy1m) 19

None of that here...it's a really intense movie, not a Godzilla vs. a Large Trash Bag Covered in Vaseline type movie. Posted by: E Buzz Miller at January 20, 2008 05:30 PM (v/XJX) 20
There's one "holy fucking fuck" moment E Buzz, and that's with the B2 dropping 50,000lbs of kickass. Then JJ Abrams, cause he doesn't know how to end the movie right, has the creature jump out of the blast... straight at the Huey. Whatever.

Yeah. When they're caught in the middle of the battle in the street, when Marlena does her thing, and when they first see Beth's building and you realize that Rob is not stopping. Thems were the fuckity-wha moments. Posted by: Gabriel Malor at January 20, 2008 06:09 PM (1Ug6U) 24

I just got back from the movie. My reaction: meh. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. It wasn't bad. But it wasn't that good either. The trailer annoyed the piss out of me ("Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God! Oh my God!"). The movie only had a few annoying groaners (through forced dialogue, trying to have a character voice what you want your audience to be thinking).
I also saw There Will Be Blood a few days ago and it was awesome so Polynikes can toss my salad with jelly. Posted by: Z Ryan at January 20, 2008 06:39 PM (PDeVA) 27
You guys overlook classic story-telling techniques. The Hero & Villian have to be connected somehow, and meet in some climactic encounter. This Cloverfield has in Spades! The first thing the monster does (presumably, just after the explosive comming out) is rip off Liberty's head and chuck it... right at our Heroes! The connection is formed, since they were the amoung the very first people to see the monster (from the rooftop). Also, ripping off her head implys that the monster isn't a stupid slug, it's intelligent. A slug would knock Liberty over, perhaps tossing the head as an afterthought. The monster plucked her head off on purpose (with a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound?) This explains why the monster goes for the helicopter after the B-2 attack, he can tell the Heroes are in it, laughing at him. In the final confrontation, the monster pauses to consider what to do, again it is not stupid, it's smarter than Kong or Godzilla. Which brings me to HP Lovecraft. If it isn't an actual HPL God (I'm thinking Yog-Sothoth, he has little helpers) it is certainly inspired by HPL. And even though we get many views of it, it still remains mysterious & unexplainable, which is good, eh? Posted by: 5Cats at January 20, 2008 08:11 PM (Knaf0) 28
I took 7 (yes 7) kids to see Cloverfield this afternoon. 13, 12, 11, 10, 10, 8, and 6.
I really enjoyed it. I got a weensy bit seasick at one point (and one son stepped out at one point) but I liked it. Not too scary - it was just exciting. I'll have to see it again (on Blu-Ray) to catch everything I missed. Posted by: carin at January 20, 2008 08:35 PM (SK5U6) 29
This was discussed some over in the other thread, but the shaky cam thing wasn't bad at all for me. I was sitting in the fourth row, such that I slightly had to use my peripheral vision, and I had no problems with it. I am old too at 33 years of age.
Maybe its a gamer thing. If you are into first person shooters, you get used to seeing and quickly deciphering images that are shaky and unfocused. I suppose if you are type that has to take Dramamine on road trips though, then this movie wouldn't be for you. Posted by: jasonh at January 21, 2008 12:27 AM (2YJJn) 30
It's about as kick ass as a monster movie can be in 2008. Some bad ass scenes...no matter what gigantic bass sound waves a little camera recorder can get.
Sorry to all the douches who think otherwise, it's as good as Alien was when it was released. That sickening uncertainty...the same, if not worse. It's as if we had a camera in the channel with Tom Skeritt and we're waiting for him to get smashed. But it's so much worse. And with cool internet backstories to boot...who can bitch about it... I wanted to see this from day one. But then I like things like the re-make of "Dawn of the Dead" by Zack Snyder. Go figure. Anyway, the tough part is convincing my fiancee to go see something like this with me. She likes things like "Little Miss Sunshine" and that sort of crap. Anyway, so I took her to see some movie called "Juno" last week, with the agreement that we'd see "Cloverfield" together. She rolled her eyes and bitched and complained, but eventually agreed. Anyway, right up until the moment the movie started, she was kind of pissy about seeing this low brow movie. But she really liked it. And she is a total artsy fartsy sort of movie girl. At least that is how she likes to think of herself. Although I know the truth about her. She resisted seeing it, but this art-house movie girl loved Zack Snyders version of "Dawn of the Dead" when I dragged her to see it too. Posted by: Male moron at January 21, 2008 04:27 AM (+nbz9) 34

I was blown away by it. Hooked after the building crash, cloud of dust. The military fight scene Ace referenced was amazing. I dug it. The kids behind me, however, thought it was the worst movie ever. So, I guess there is evidence of polarization.
The shaky camera thing wasn't bad at all, some scenes seemed to emerge from the camera, becoming more resolved and still. Other parts had the camera knocked around. EJS, I did think they f'd up that scene though. Posted by: joeindc44 at January 22, 2008 01:31 AM (+EnT5) 41
I thought they ended it right where they intended to end it. The whole point was that the two of them loved each other, but were too selfish and immature to admit it. And what were their last words? Yep. It's a chick flick wrapped in a monster movie.
Of course, it would have worked a lot better if those two weren't a couple of Abercrombie & Fitch mannequins. I didn't care about them at all. Posted by: Jim Treacher at January 27, 2008 02:01 PM (NV3P1) 42
...This response is way too late, but I had to post it.
...That rubber-suit monster wannabe flick was a joke!. Do those guys holding that camera have it bolted into their heads? Every-time someone talks directly to them, they're looking Directly into the camera! Seriously. Why go underground in the first place, did they not notice the falling buildings? Whatever's walking around is putting very deep holes in the ground. ...To cap it all off, it didn't have the Balls to show what it would've been like had the United States Military really committed itself to the end of that CG artifact. Those turkey director / producers decided to make a Japanese '40s "Godzilla" rampage by showing how Stupid we are as an nation. Why weren't these used? C-130s? A-10s? GBU-24s(the 1,000 pound ones)? M198s? M1A1(2)s -not the slow hollyweird cows shown- moving at speeds of over 60 miles an hour? maybe spotters on helos with laser targeting for bomb drops of mentioned munitions? Better still, the Entire fleet of jets at our disposal? ......no- ....They showed a dozen or so "military" men crazily charging whilst firing randomly up at some target while a hollyweird M109A6 styled thingy followed behind firing off a round- hold on. Doesn't such a real weapon demands a EMPTY front while firing- since, you know. The -Very Lethal- Hydrostatic SHOCK-WAVE generated by the expulsion of the round tends to Jelly human organs? There's a scene where the monster is Carpet bombed- CARPET.. bombed, while the camera in a heli Circles the explosions like a moth around a light-bulb! sigh... ...Hollyweird is still stuck in the '40s it seems. Forgetting the third act? What about the first two, since I didn't see those show up as well. You just saw people party, panic, run & die.. I guess that would've been a "4" act setup right? There's nothing intelligent about ripping off the head of a statue and chucking it hundreds of yards. Any thug can deface or decapitate a statue. The scene is included purely for shock factor. If New York (which attracts the weird, wonderful and the nutjobs) comes under attack by "something" then you're guaranteed that the Statue of Liberty gets it. It's a defining monument of the city and the precious constitution. Perhaps this thing was French - sacre bleu! Of course we only follow the trekkings of one group. Which means they are our only eyes and ears for the whole film. Which means that any thing the monster does will be conventiently aimed at our protagonists. This explains why the monster goes for the helicopter after the B-2 attack, he can tell the Heroes are in it, laughing at him. In the final confrontation, the monster pauses to consider what to do, again it is not stupid, it's smarter than Kong or Godzilla. Or perhaps because the helicopter is the nearest moving object? Naturally it'll take a swipe because aircraft have been harassing it. A good quote from Dog Soliders :- "I don't care what they are, I'm not about to second guess these things. They're the enemy simple as that" Which brings me to HP Lovecraft. If it isn't an actual HPL God (I'm thinking Yog-Sothoth, he has little helpers) it is certainly inspired by HPL. And even though we get many views of it, it still remains mysterious & unexplainable, which is good, eh? Expect the sequel to cash in on the hype. So it'll be full blown visuals galore. I hope the film makers are brave and will take a different format to continue the story. Not another "trapped civvie" story as we've had that already. A story involving a group of Army soldiers (squad/section size) would be interesting. Showing how they cope with the stress and strain of trying to fight something that a) they haven't been trained nor briefed to fight and b) some thing which doesn't seem to die. Although I'd expect the latter's due to many wayward shots by the soldiers not connecting. Not to mention that when/if they hit, it's the most armoured parts of the body.Nice post there Forlourned. It is amusing to show a M109A6 "thingy" (note with Godzilla [1998] that all the armoured vehicles were made up for some reason, and that the Apache gunships had two cannons rather than the mounted one) fires right next to the soldiers. Which as you said would be instantly lethal. The overpressure would rupture any organ leaving a cold cadaver on the floor. Let's hope that creature gets wasted in the next film.
