The Place Where Optimism Flourishes Most

The ronulans drew attention this weekend when they swarmed the town clerk of Sutton, New Hampshire. Her crime? On the night of the primary, her office reported that Ron Paul received no votes. He actually received 31, as the corrected numbers showed the next day.

This is luck at its worst. Screw up Rudy Giuliani's vote total. Or John McCain's. Or John Edwards's. Or Bill Richardson's.

But never, ever get anything wrong when it comes to Paul and his voting tally. If you do, fans who shouted from the rooftops through the primary season will track you down and chew you out.

"Most of the these people are not rational," Call said.

People have deeply invested themselves in candidates this year. Look how much trouble the Reason people have had at turning away from Ron Paul. Look at how vociferous the Fredheads are. I don't know if it is because of the extra-long election season or perhaps because we haven't had a chance to fight like this in a while, but followers of the Republican contest for president are every bit as given to excess as sports fanatics.

Ron Paul's supporters are the worst probably because they were already prone to flights of fancy. But as any of the moron-cobloggers will tell you, it doesn't get you anywhere to get in an argument with any committed voter at this point. Politics is personal and an insult to a candidate is an insult to his supporters.

We just need to remember that after we've actually selected a candidate, we're all on the same side when it comes to beating the Democrats. Except for the ronulans. They can crawl back under the rock they came from.

3 Uhm Gabriel, I believe it's the Romney supporters who get the nastiest. We Fredheads might cheerlead a wee bit too much, but the ugliest personal attacks I've seen have come from Romneyites.

I'm hardly a fan of either Paul or his army of zombies. But reporting votes correctly seems like an important matter, not the frivolity that Gabriel and the reporter seem to think it is.

6 I don't know, Gabe. I think it's reasonable to expect the political apparatus to reliably report the results of the voting apparatus.

And I thinnk its reasonable for ANY minority candidates followers to be upset when the machine marginalizes them behond their already marginal status and outside official policy.

Nor do I think it's a great idea to laugh at only 31 votes out 960.
That's a hell of a lot bigger percentage than Bush won Florida by.

Calling the ronulans on the extreme behavior is fine. There is no need to add a bunch of lousy reasoning to the mix, and I won't blame them for thinking it looks like the machine working against them.

11 Yeah, the only supporters I see getting very defensive and testy are Ron Paul and Huck fans. The Paultards we all know, but the Huck fans really get me. How can a self described conservative support him? "Well, he's pro life." Of course he is, so is Fred, Mitt, John, and Ron freaking Paul. "He's a Christian" So? Are we electing the Minister General or the President?"He seems like nice guy" Jimmy Carter.

Ughh...you can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into to begin with.

As a Fred man, I just can't get why people who like Mitt for his fiscal policy, Rudy for his defense policy, and Huck for his social views can't support a candidate who shares all of our views.

So, yeah, not understanding why so called conservatives won't support a real actual conservative might make me a little amazed at times. If that makes a vociferous raging fan then so be it.

I agree with Gabe here. I've seen a lot worse election malfeasance and both Paul and his supporters are so batshit crazy and malignant that it's hard to treat them with anything other than utter contempt, even on that rare occasion when they're right about something. Broken clock, etc. etc....

Maybe I misunderstood the story, but weren't the results corrected as a result of the Paulestinians'  pointing out the problem? I'm not excusing their behavior, but the "Hey, mistakes happen so don't get bent out of shape!" tone of the article doesn't appeal to me either.

Rare use of profanity by me:

These people are fucking nuts.  Seriously.  Even when their relative sanity is mentioned in MSM blogs, they come out of the woodwork and assert their normalcy a little too strenuously... "I'm a small business owner, blah blah blah...."

Tim Oliver, if this was a mistake that resulted in Paul's delegate count needing to be revised, it'd be one thing.  But as mistakes go, this one was fairly benign and certainly doesn't justify the level of harassment this lady has received.  I think the vitriol she's received is the result of pent-up frustrations from the Ronulans that the bought straw polls and internet poll spamming ended up being for naught.

The most conservative then. He does have the most conservative record and his positions and statements are very clear. You cannot argue that anyone in the race is more conservative then Fred Thompson.

Now, you could argue he is not a viable candidate, not electable, we need a moderate this year, etc. The fact is that he is the candidate I can support without having to "get over" things like amnesty before enforcement (McCain) guns (Mitt, Rudy, kind of McCain) general liberalism (Huckabee) insanity (Ron Paul)

If it is fanatical and inappropriate to back a candidate who's views so closely match my own, then I guess I'm an inappropriate fanatic.

Also, I love some of the recounted statements in the article:

A man from Texas e-mailed that he was "contacting, by certified mail, the Attorney General of New Hampshire . . . and requesting a complete investigation and prosecution of any and all parties involved."

Oh no....CERTIFIED MAIL?!?  The Attorney General's office probably NEVER gets certified mail!  That such extravagant means were used to send a request will give it all kinds of gravitas!

29 Yeah, ok Gabe. Really, from the standpoin tthat it was corrected immeadiately.

But I didn't say their response was reasonable.

Really, I didn't. Go look at it again. I said it's reasonable to be upset when if you candidate is short changed.

More importantly, I think its reasonable to be upset when an article rips on the ronulans behavior - with legitimate points - but throws a bunch of lousy points into the mix.

Like this:
"Paul actually got a whopping 31 votes.

Out of 920 cast."

That's a lousy point. Its wrong on a bunch of levels.

Umm.....

People have deeply invested themselves in candidates this year. Look how much trouble the Reason people have had at turning away from Ron Paul. Look at how vociferous the Fredheads are.

See how he compared Paultards and Fredheads?

Look, I'm not saying people are wrong to support their candidate of choice. I'm just saying that every conservative I've talked to has certain things they care about. Be it abortion, taxes, or the GWOT, we have different focuses. Again, speaking from personal experience, people are backing certain candidates based on their own issues of importance. GWOT people are backing McCain or Rudy. The fiscal cons are with Mitt, as are the ones who think that a moderate is the best choice this year. People who consider abortion to be their issue are with the Huckster. All I'm saying is that I find it quite puzzling that a candidate who can unite all these people because he does feel the same as they do is relegated to fourth place. Why? Because people just don't think he can win. Well, if the GWOT people, the economy people, and the social cons all rallied to the guy who covers them all, then he would win. But hey, the electorate is not mine to command.

Please stop saying I have paultard like rhetoric. Paultards say "Well, I guess you just hate freedom" in response to any criticism of their candidate. It is the rightwing equivalent of "for the children" and has no place in what I like to call the Adult Political Party.

Can we go back to watching the Dems call each other racist/sexist now?

I would ask those of us here who are gonna stay home or vote Dem, if their particular candidate doesn't get the nod at the convention this: What is it about Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi that you like so much? The '06 elections are an excellent example of how staying home works.

A buddy of mine actually sent me an email asking me what I thought of the candidates.

My response:

Fred! has been my top choice, followed by Hunter and then Romney.

I have a Fred '08 sticker on the back window of my car.  It is my sincere hope that Fred can take South Carolina, and thus, keep the fire burning.  I honestly think nobody is going to come out of the primaries with a clear majority.  I think we're going to have a brokered convention, in which case it's anybody's guess who is going to win.

As for the Dem side?  I can say that I could very possibly live with the idea of Obama, in the sense that he's so inexperienced, he couldn't possibly get anything accomplished.  Hillary, on the other hand, would be the worst possible thing our country could do.

Oh, and anyone who votes for Ron Paul is INSANE.
My friend turned out to be a Ronulan, and I got a two page email basically saying he never wanted to talk to me again and that I was a fascist and that the only man who could save America would win despite all the polls.  This from someone I've known for 20 years.   Yes, Ron Paul is insane, and so are his "people."
