Iranians try to provoke incident in strait

Several Iranian fast boats approached US warships in a threatening manner. The Sky News video (below fold) suggested they were within 200 meters at one point.

The max depression/elevation of CWIS is:

Block 0: -10 / +80 degrees
Block 1: -20 / +80 degrees
Block 1B: -25 / +85 degrees

If the ships had the oldest stuff, they were within only a few scant seconds of being unable to use CWIS effectively with a target at 200 meters and closing. I'm just saying...

Looking carefully at the video I could not see gun turrets on the Iranian boats. Prehaps thats what saved them and delayed firing but we can't play the game "who really looks like a threat?"

This is part of a continuing program, in alliance with the media, of making our naval commanders reluctant to shot for fear of courts-marshall. Thus the agressive behavior, followed by "oh, see, it was nothing at all".

Maybe we should have Patreaus vet the next generation of naval commanders too? The USN seems to have trouble maintaining an agressive spirit in its commanders... probably because of too many goddam lawyers back in the Pentagon ready to pounce.

Maybe we need to cull the ranks of our sea-lawyers too?

16 Concur with changing the ROE. Dan has it right, heads should roll over this. It is inexcusable to let fast patrol boats get that close, especially since they appeared hostile. It took an inordinate amount of time to get to weapons free. The crew is not even at general quarters in the clip.
