| NH Debate Open ThreadSince Ace is passed out somewhere on Bowery Row, I'm gonna put up a New Hampshire Debate thread for all you homos (and you know who you are) who would rather watch and discuss this than the NFL playoffs. The GOP goes first. I think it starts at 7:00 EST. I'm gonna go ahead and summarize it for you here though, so you can watch football if you prefer: Huckabee is funny.McCain is barely suppressing his inner rage. Thompson sounds pretty "phlegmmy". Romney is standing behind two different podiums trying to figure out what side he should be on. Giuliani is talking about how he was Mayor of New York. Just expand on that for 90 or so minutes and I'll think you'll be good. More (DrewM.) CNN/WMUR NH Poll: GOP: McCain 33, Romney 27, Giuliani 14, Huckabee 11, Paul 9. Dems: Clinton 33, Obama 33, Edwards 20, Richardson 4, Kucinich 2. The Poll was taken yesterday and today, so it reflects the post Iowa landscape. It does have a margin of error of +/- 5%, which if I recall my political polling class from college is fairly large. Streaming video [Gabe]: At WMUR in New Hampshire. Thanks to moron Knemon. You might want to change funny to looney.

Since it’s Saturday night, I propose a debate drinking game…every time a candidate says ‘change’, drink.

Ron Paul is in the hallway stamping his feet and screaming like a little kid who didn't get an ice cream cone.
Wait. He looks like that all of the time. Posted by: mesablue at January 05, 2008 07:58 PM (KCOdQ) 6
Drew, drew drinks for any Strong, Stronger, strongest. At the end, if Huck hasn't mentioned his relationship with Christ and Rudy hasn't mentioned 9-11 you have to pound a beer.

You forgot "Ron Paul is a barking moonbat, shrieking about the New World Order."

Y'all don't even know how much it annoys me that I have to watch this on ABC. Blechhhh. I've been so happy not ever having to see George Stephanopolous, Charlie Gibson, or Diane Sawyer for all this time (at least a year or so?).
Posted by: Beth at January 05, 2008 08:06 PM (yqiXY) 12
Heh, Diane Sawyer just played down the facebook tie in. Too late. Fucking cheesy.
Posted by: mesablue at January 05, 2008 08:07 PM (KCOdQ) 13
We get to watch the game and the debates out here. ABC is showing it at 7 local. I'm still going to miss it.

Because that gets the idiot 18-20-something demographic, and favors the Obamessiah. MTV is over. Posted by: Beth at January 05, 2008 08:10 PM (yqiXY) 18

Fuck Huck.
He looks blinky-tired and unready tonight. Yay! Oh, listen to him pre-empt McCain jumping down his throat by bashing Rummy. He's so phony. Please please please McCain, don't take his bait. Posted by: Beth at January 05, 2008 08:13 PM (yqiXY) 21

Mesa, I used to detest (but still respect) McCain, ever since the 90's. (I was for W since before he even announced, actually.) I was part of a stupid blogroll "Bloggers for McCain's Opponent" for a long time, but I quietly removed it about six months ago, because of the surge. That's when I really started to give him another chance, and he's my #2 now. I never thought that'd happen.

Beth, I was a bit more moderate in the past, being a big city (Chicago) boy. I was a Kemp supporter and liked H.W. That's changed drastically over the last eight years. Heh, at least I was Republican, one of the few I knew. I was a fan of W, I didn't like how the party was shoving him down our throats. The primary was over before it ever began.
I'm loving how up in the air things are this time. Should make for a better campaign in the general as we're the party vacating office. Posted by: mesablue at January 05, 2008 08:45 PM (KCOdQ) 88

Here's the current conservative republican frontrunner. His campaign is talking about NH: His aides are wary of New Hampshire. “It’s all no tax, no government there,” said Bob Wickers, a top strategist. “It’s not ideal.” But they believe that the message of economic anxiety that he preaches will help in Michigan’s primary on Jan. 15 and in states in the South, which have high poverty rates in addition to strong groups of social conservatives. I quit. I'm writing in Batman on my ballot. Posted by: Entropy at January 05, 2008 09:01 PM (HgAV0) Posted by: Beth at January 05, 2008 09:01 PM (yqiXY) 129

Quick impression from the first half brawl format...Huck is an ass. But we knew that.
When the discussion got detailed ('in the weeds' as Gibson called it), he clearly had nothing to add. Fred, Mitt and Maverick were slugging it out and Huck was lost. Rudy can't seem to find his footing but his health care ideas are pretty free market oriented as well. It seems he could have swung at Mitt 'I like mandates' there. Oh and Charlie, 'in the weeds' is a good thing. It's where people stop talking in sound bites and discuss real ideas. I thought that was the point of this format. Couple of thoughts- Drew, you're right, but it gets into C-SPAN territory, and Charlie is still at heart an MSM guy (although this is the best format I've seen)... don't be too hard on him about it. When it comes to TV, you still have to keep people from tuning out, and not everyone is as dorky as we are about paying attention to the minutiae. Charlie is doing a pretty damned good job as moderator- trying to get out of the way the candidates and let them fight it out. Has anyone noticed Fred and McCain smirking back and forth at each other? tmi3rd Posted by: tmi3rd at January 05, 2008 09:10 PM (RQ7+a) 152
McCain talks border enforcement! Deportation. Temporary worker program. Prosecute employes who don't comply. NEVER! Okay, not really. But if he's the nominee, I want to see him talk that up in the general, not just the primary. Posted by: Slublog at January 05, 2008 09:10 PM (BaTx1) 153
McCain speaks the wrong language when he's talking about illegal immigration. The way he talks about it sounds all liberal, but it isn't. Others talk tough, like Rudy, but aren't much different on illegal immigration--in fact, he's (solely based on his history) more liberal on it.

McCain talks border enforcement! Deportation. Temporary worker program. Prosecute employes who don't comply. Enough for any of you? I actually think McCain, out of these on the stage, is tougher on illegal immigration (and more knowledgeable) than the others, but like I said, he isn't speaking the right language. At all. I can sort of understand it, if he's trying to not alienate the Hispanic vote, but I'm not sure it's really worth pursuing that angle after the last couple of years.Posted by: Beth at January 05, 2008 09:14 PM (yqiXY) 165

Eh, I like this group photo shit.
At the end of the day one of them will be President. The fights will continue but so will the Republic. We need to be reminded that power is handed over in an orderly, non-violent way. Very few nations have the history of that like we do (maybe just the British?). It's good to be reminded how fortunate it is we have that and can take it for granted. I loved the Eisenhower and Nixon legacy boosting. That had to piss off a few JFK fans out there.
I too could live with Romney as veep, but he's clearly going for the #1 slot. I don't think Mccain is worthy of this contest. He's tacky and a bit dishonest. This isn't just a pissing match. I know everyone likes him, but he had the easiest time up there and still came out looking like a jerk. Thompson can communicate that he thinks something is stupid without looking like a jerk. I also think he's got the stamina to do a great job as Prez. he won't wear himself out worrying about what the idiot press want him to say. He's make the bad press look quite bad. Something Bush can't do, but has tried 100 times. 8 years of Thompson might competely save journalism as a profession. Rudy Mccain and Romney are too sensitive to their image in the press.
