| Andrew Olmsted, RIPKilled in Iraq, but blogging a previously written post to be published in the event of his death. It's eerie. He died a hero. Read the whole thing. This is an entry I would have preferred not to have published, but there are limits to what we can control in life, and apparently I have passed one of those limits.... As with many bloggers, I have a disgustingly large ego, and so I just couldn't bear the thought of not being able to have the last word if the need arose. Perhaps I take that further than most, I don't know. I hope so. It's frightening to think there are many people as neurotic as I am in the world. In any case, since I won't get another chance to say what I think, I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. Such as it is. ... What I don't want this to be is a chance for me, or anyone else, to be maudlin. I'm dead. That sucks, at least for me and my family and friends. But all the tears in the world aren't going to bring me back, so I would prefer that people remember the good things about me rather than mourning my loss. (If it turns out a specific number of tears will, in fact, bring me back to life, then by all means, break out the onions.) I had a pretty good life, as I noted above. Sure, all things being equal I would have preferred to have more time, but I have no business complaining with all the good fortune I've enjoyed in my life. So if you're up for that, put on a little 80s music (preferably vintage 1980-1984), grab a Coke and have a drink with me. If you have it, throw 'Freedom Isn't Free' from the Team America soundtrack in; if you can't laugh at that song, I think you need to lighten up a little. I'm dead, but if you're reading this, you're not, so take a moment to enjoy that happy fact.Since he asked for Freedom Isn't Free, here it is. I hope this doesn't break his rule about using his death for political purposes; all the YouTube versions seem to be tributes to the troops. Comments1

RIP, soldier. A note about the FIF video: all the pictures are related to American fighting men except one - the wrecked warship. I believe it is a photo of the WW-II Japanese cruiser Mogami, after being worked over by USN dive-bombers. Some people can accomplish more in a few short instants than most do in their entire lives. What a tragedy for this world that we lose such great men.

And when he goes to Heaven
To St. Peter he’ll tell:

A Soldier
There is discipline in A Soldier you can see it when he walks, There is honor in A Soldier you hear it when he talks. There is courage in A Soldier you can see it in his eyes, There is loyalty in A Soldier that he will not compromise. There is something in A Soldier that makes him stand apart, There is strength in A Soldier that beats from his heart. A Soldier isn't a title any man can be hired to do, A Soldier is the soul of that man buried deep inside of you. A Soldier's job isn't finished after an 8 hour day or a 40 hour week, A Soldier is always A Soldier even while he sleeps. A Soldier serves his country first and his life is left behind, A Soldier has to sacrifice what comes first in a civilian's mind. If you are civilian - I am saying this to you..... next time you see A Soldier remember what they do. A Soldier is the reason our land is 'Home of the free', A Soldier is the one that is brave protecting you and me. If you are A Soldier - I am saying this to you..... Thank God for EVERY SOLDIER Thank God for what YOU do! Angela Goodwin Posted by: McLovin at January 04, 2008 06:32 PM (SAQWb) 12
"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived." -- George S. Patton I sign on to the quote but still I'm reeling here. &^%$! I need a drink. Or ten.

"I believe that when we leave a place a part of it goes with us and part
of us remains. Go anywhere in these halls, when it is quiet and just
listen. After a while you will hear the echoes of all of our
conversations, every thought and word we've exchanged. Long after we
are gone, our voices will linger in these walls for as long as this
place remains. But I will admit that the part of me that is going will
very much miss the part of you that is staying." -- Citizen G'Kar
Knowing he was a fan of B5 and G'Kar (IIRC, posting under that monicker somewhere), I went looking for that quote. Funny thing is that I finally found it in full at his site. Peace, brother. Executive Mansion, Washington, Nov. 21, 1864
Dear Madam, I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom. Yours, very sincerely and respectfully, Abraham Lincoln Posted by: Brown Line at January 04, 2008 07:58 PM (OJ6qn) 22

As Major Whittlesey, MoH recipient from Argonne Campaign in WWI, said, it's "unacceptable", especially for a fellow B5 fanatic, but I couldn't imagine a better group of men and women in history to be associated with. In the B5 Lost Tales dvd, Colonel Lochley told Sheridan that Dr. Franklin was exploring beyond the rim with G'kar. Major Olmsted, godspeed as you explore beyond the rim; may we one day meet, sir.
