Google Decides to Make Its Own Wikipedia

Oh. Hits. Ok, whatever.

The Internet search powerhouse is inviting chosen people to test a free service dubbed "knol," to indicate a unit of knowledge, vice president of engineering Udi Manber said Friday in a posting at Google's website.
"Our goal is to encourage people who know a particular subject to write an authoritative article about it," Manber wrote.
"There are millions of people who possess useful knowledge that they would love to share, and there are billions of people who can benefit from it."

Yeah? Well there are millions more who don't know jack shit about anything, but they don't know they are morons.

And "knol" is a stupid word.

No one has made this catch yet: it will be one more step in Google's control of the flow of information. They're hard Left and they suppress many news items already. Watch. Google is trying to assume the roll that used to be the preserve of the MSM--control of the narrative. This is a first step.

I view this development with a great deal of concern.

I saw the Angels in SF a few years ago. The USS Kennedy steamed UNDER the Golden Gate bridge, had to come in at low tide, and launched an f 18 in the harbor in front of Fisherman's Wharf. So, later, a group of far-left intrapreneurs decide to do the same thing, but it'll work this time because they're, you know, credible. The kind of credibility that comes from kowtowing to Chinese censors, hiding Israel's name on maps, including far-left advocacy articles in their "news" stream while excluding even recognized conservative news sources, not to mention gaming their approval/banning system on their video adjunct (and continuing the practice on YouTube).

Google so desperately wants to be the NYT of teh interwebs. Perhaps they should check the NYT's stock history before they do that.

17 The first thing I did when I read this story was Google "knol stupid" because I wondered whether anyone else also thought that just the decision to call it that alone was blithering idiocy. I'm glad I'm part of a community that takes it upon itself to deride the stupid.
