I'd do the same thing. And I'd call every single news network in the state of Iowa over and over again until somebody agreed to interview me too. Maybe she did the latter and nobody would give her air time, thus she made the ad. You go mom. That monster hurt and killed your little girl. No, it doesn't matter that she was a grown woman at the time. That is still this mother's little girl. Posted by: funky chicken at December 13, 2007 10:56 AM (I+jPP) 7

I think it would be more effective if they had tied to to the broader issue and used those statements of Democrats who wanted him to be harder on criminals. His supporters can say this was one terrible mistake, but it isn't. It's exactly what happens if you let a whole bunch of criminals go free.

They are fanatics, this manica 'finds christ' in prison, or more likely pretends to because he knows it will help, and huck goes crazy to let him out. Crap like this is one of the many reasons why i regret that Bush was the inly option in 2004, things like appointing Ashcroft, Miers, etc....

I am not absolutely sure about the denomination Huckabee belongs to but I do know that some Baptist denominations derive from the Calvinist tradition. If Huckabee belongs to one of those then his claim of acting from Christian charity is a hoot. In that belief system it doesn't matter what good works you do on earth God essentially choses by random those who will ascend to heaven. In AoS lifestyle terms he is up there with a big d20 rolling saving throws against an eternity in hellfire for everyone ever born or who ever will be born: Calvinism stresses the complete ruin of man's ethical nature against a backdrop of the sovereign grace of God in salvation. It teaches that fallen humanity is morally and spiritually unable to follow God or escape their condemnation before him and that only by divine intervention in which God must change their unwilling hearts can people be turned from rebellion to willing obedience. In this view, all people are entirely at the mercy of God, who would be just in condemning all people for their sins but who has chosen to be merciful to some. One person is saved while another is condemned, not because of a foreseen willingness, faith, or any other virtue in the first person, but because God sovereignly chose to have mercy on him. Although the person must believe the gospel and respond to be saved, this obedience of faith is God's gift, and thus God completely and sovereignly accomplishes the salvation of sinners. Views of predestination to damnation (the doctrine of reprobation) are less uniform than is the view of predestination to salvation (the doctrine of election) among self-described Calvinists (see Supralapsarianism and Infralapsarianism). Posted by: chad at December 13, 2007 11:21 AM (lNQg8) 17
Most Baptists are not Calvinists although many Iowans are. Now can we get back to politics. This obsessive religion talk is going to ruin the GOP.

Good ad, but not great. It looks like an isolated, although tragic, incident. I think Huck is a terrible candidate, but even I find myself thinking it's irresponsible to hold Huck accountable for the actions of someone else. But if you tie this into statistics showing how many other people he released, then it's no longer an isolated, tragic incident. It's an increasingly-probable result of gross negligence and malfeasance in office. Show us more faces, more mothers who lost their daughters, the letter where Huckabee simply laughed at a prosecutor who demanded to know why a vicious killer was offered clemency. That's the jugular. Posted by: Sobek at December 13, 2007 11:41 AM (dmsUZ) 20
This is a devastating ad precisely because it does not tie to statistics or anything else that takes the focus off the tragedy of this young woman's murder and Huckabee's role in having her murderer released.
It is not at all difficult to hold Huckabee responsible for the murder any more than it would be to hold someone accountable for the result of their letting a vicious dog run loose through a playground full of children. He was the but-for cause of the murderer's release and is responsible for what resulted. Posted by: Conservative Chris at December 13, 2007 12:01 PM (spt0a) 21
Oh, there's nothing halfway
About the Iowa way to treat you,
When we treat you
Which we may not do at all.
There's an Iowa kind of special
Chip-on-the-shoulder attitude.
We've never been without.
That we recall.
We can be cold
As our falling thermometers in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We could stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But what the heck, you're welcome,
Join us at the picnic.
You can eat your fill
Of all the food you bring yourself.
You really ought to give Iowa a try.
Provided you are contrary,
We can be cold
As our falling thermometer in December
If you ask about our weather in July.
And we're so by God stubborn
We can stand touchin' noses
For a week at a time
And never see eye-to-eye.
But we'll give you our shirt
And a back to go with it
If your crops should happen to die.

So, this guy has a jailhouse conversion and he is saved and born again, again.
The minister involved is very pleased, this is his life's work: redemption, conversion, Jesus saves - confirmation of everything he has been trained to believe.
So the Huckster commutes the guy, ignoring legal advice, staff objections, 8 other rape victims and the ghost of Jim Baker.
And to think this only happened 1300 times.

True enough for me. It does need a little more at the end. Like how many more felons are out there because of Huckster. Little trailers on the bottom of the screen with repeat offenders names and crimes. Or an ending with "would he commute the 9-11 hi-jackers if they converted?". And let that hang in the air, and on him like a blanket of death. I'm a moron though. I'd just kick him in the balls, punch him in the face, look down at him and say "Holy shit! I just found Jesus laying right next to you on the sidewalk". "Forgive my sins dear Lord, oh and Mike, sign this civil claims release form, prepared letter of intent not to aid in my prosecution and the co-signer on a loan for a new "Vette". Lois, call me babe. No don't thank me.

What we really need is a chart of all of Huck's clemencies, divided into columns by Murderers, Rapists, and Drug Dealers.
That would be a damning little tail on the end of a TV ad. Posted by: DoDoGuRu at December 13, 2007 12:47 PM (72nfo) 27
I'm curious to see how this particular ad affects poll numbers. I would have done an ad that focused on several of his more egregious parole releases, but less in depth, to give the sense of how common this is.
Going in depth on just one case seems to appeal to emotion, which always seems the weaker argument to me. Might play well with Iowa voters, though.

If this Christmas Card from the White House is any indication, George and Laura are in the Huckster's corner:
The Christmas card from the White House is the most religious White House Christmas card in memory. The card included explicit religious references beyond just a bible verse. The card features a verse from Nehemiah (Old Testament, it should be noted): You alone are the LORD. But whereas in previous years the President and the First Lady opted for messages of happinss, goodwill, and peace, this year featured the following closer: May the joy of all creation fill your heart this blessed season 2007. It is then signed by both George and Laura Bush. Posted by: Tom at December 13, 2007 01:51 PM (1kwK7) 36

Ouch. That's gonna leave a mark. I hope.
That right there is the nail in the coffin for me (not that I needed it). I cannot imagine why on earth he'd parole a guy who raped a 17 year-old girl 25 years early. Not even 25 days early. I'll bet that POS had a (fake) jailhouse "conversion" like so many others who want to get out of prison and Huckabee loved to forgive a good (fake) Christian. Sorry, Huck, that's up to God to forgive that monster, not you. I honestly cannot see how anyone can defend this, not even the most die-hard Hucksters. I could understand commuting a death sentence for moral reasons--I might not agree with it, but I understand it--but letting a rapist out on the streets? NO. Posted by: Beth at December 13, 2007 01:53 PM (yqiXY) 38
I don't think the ad will do squat...for now.
Right now Huckabee is riding the wave of the far right Christians in specific states that are very conservative to begin with and love his message of faith. He should do well in not only Iowa, South Carolina and some of the other hard core bible belt states, but...once he's outside that bubble, I think he's in trouble. Most people in America right now are more concerned with the economy and keeping their lives in order. Posted by: Tom at December 13, 2007 01:56 PM (1kwK7) 39

Isn't there a commandment relating to this kind of behavior?
No. First of all, the "Commandment" you are thinking of is "bearing false witness against one's neighbor", a specific and contemptible act. Second, those aren't the real Ten Commandments. Every Decalogue you see — from the 5,000-pound granite behemoth inside the Alabama State Judicial Building to the little wallet-cards sold at Christian bookstores — is bogus. Simply reading the Bible will prove this. Getting out your King James version, turn to Exodus 20:2-17. You'll see the familiar list of rules about having no other gods, honoring your parents, not killing or coveting, and so on. At this point, though, Moses is just repeating to the people what God told him on Mount Si'nai. These are not written down in any form. Later, Moses goes back to the Mount, where God gives him two "tables of stone" with rules written on them (Exodus 31:1 In neither of these cases does the Bible refer to "commandments." In the first instance, they are "words" which "God spake," while the tablets contain "testimony." It is only when Moses goes back for new tablets that we see the phrase "ten commandments" (Exodus 34:2 The real "Ten Commandments" as handed down by the LORD unto Moses (and plainly listed in Exodus 34:13-2 I. Thou shalt worship no other god. II. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods. III.. The feast of unleavened bread thou shalt keep IV. Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest. V. Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end. VI. Thrice In the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord God. VII. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven. VIII. Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning. IX. The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. X. Thou shalt not seethe a kid [ie, a young goat] in his mother's milk. So, no, there isn't actually any Commandment against speaking untruths. Not that such would actually stop a politician... Funky Chicken: "You seem to believe that of Christianity, based on observation of Huckabee."
I have no idea what you're talking about. My view of "religion" in general is based on reading books, articles, attending lectures relating to different beliefs, and of course, having friends who belong to different religions. I've also posted the fact that I'm an Atheist here on a number of occasions so that should tell you that I think most of it is based on word of mouth bullshit passed along by people who have a stake it the resulting behavior and beliefs of others. (I think versions of the bible(s) weren't even started until about 40 years AFTER Christ supposedly died on the cross so let's start with that.) I have a good friend who is pretty much an expert on religion and he could turn you upside down discussing the history of most religions, how they changed over time and how surprisingly similar and dissimilar they can be. As for Christianity, I would say it's the predominant religion throughout the western world, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right one, and I certainly don't believe Huckabee speaks or represent all Christians. I just "personally" believe he's a fundamentalist and they have a tendency to be very strict in their beliefs. And releasing rapists or murders because you one thinks they've "seen the light" then denying you did so, is not the way things are supposed to be done, especially by someone running for President of the United States. Don't YOU want to know exactly who's "light" are they're seeing? Posted by: Tom at December 13, 2007 04:19 PM (1kwK7) 66

Heh. The irony is strong in this one. Posted by: wiserbud at December 13, 2007 05:40 PM (EW49d) 75
Just because you disagree, it doesn't make it so
Yes it does. You are wrong, and I am right. Period, no nuance, finito. You can sit there and bash Christianity all you want because you read Christopher Hitchens and have a friend who knows a few things about religion (tainted by his own opinion as well), but you're still wrong. Amusingly so, in fact. Really, you do look rather dull sitting there pretending to know wtf you're talking about. I recommended shutting up so you wouldn't make yourself look even more ridiculous, but I guess you're determined to leave your mark. Good luck with that. P.S. I'm right and you're wrong. Get used to it. That's your tip for the day, and you're welcome. Posted by: Beth at December 13, 2007 06:08 PM (yqiXY) Posted by: Beth at December 13, 2007 06:10 PM (yqiXY) 77

Mormons are hardcore badasses! Vote for Romney, and his brother will get rid of the terrorists! ;-P (Vote for Huckabee, and he'll forgive them?) Posted by: Beth at December 13, 2007 06:17 PM (yqiXY) 78
Hitlary would run this ad in the General 24/7; and Huckabee would be toast. Just another reason for the GOP not to nominate this clown. Posted by: saf at December 13, 2007 06:35 PM (EPP76) Posted by: funky chicken at December 13, 2007 07:32 PM (I+jPP) 80

Without beating a dead horse, what do YOU think the term "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor"...means?
Which of those words did you not understand? "Thou" - means "You" "shalt not" - shall not/had better not "bear false witness" - testify falsely "against" - against "thy" - your "neighbor" - pretty self-explanatory. Now, if you are trying to overblow that specific offense against good manners among those living in close proximity into a general prohibition against ever speaking an untruth, I can't help but wonder who appointed you the Divine Arbiter of Morality? Because that is not what God said, and it clearly isn't what He meant. If He had meant, "Thou shall not lie", I think four words are much more succinct than nine. Until He says differently, I'll take His word for it. (I think versions of the bible(s) weren't even started until about 40 years AFTER Christ supposedly died on the cross so let's start with that.) Yet modern History Books about the Civil War - not even conceived of until 160 years after the supposed conflict ended - can be taken seriously? Perhaps a question better asked of your girlfriends the Dem's leading representatives, Mr. And Mrs. William Clinton. I'd be very interested in their answer, much more than anyone else's at this point in time. Posted by: wiserbud at December 13, 2007 11:36 PM (EW49d) 84
