Huckabee Busted In Bald-Faced Lie

Huckabee asked if Mormons believed Christ and Satan were brothers but then, again claiming ignorance as a defense, claimed he meant nothing by it, he was just really asking a question he was curious about. See, he said, “I don’t know much about the [Mormon] religion…" He's just a naive, ambling country bumpkin seeking some information about a topic he knew little about, you see. Not once again deliberately attempting to demean a perfectly upstanding man over his faith.

O Rly?

In 1998, the Southern Baptist Convention provocatively scheduled their annual meeting in Salt Lake City. The potential confrontation attracted a record number of mainstream media hoping for a dust-up (that never came). In preparation, the SBC distributed a 50 minute video entitled “The Mormon Puzzle” to 40,000 SBC congregations as well as publishing over 12,000 copies of a book entitled “Mormonism Unmasked."

The keynote speaker?

Mike Huckabee.

He's really a rather good liar, isn't he?

Not Sure If This Is The "Mormon Puzzle" Video... but it seems similar.

Note that's a link to Alternet.org-- a leftwing blog. Posted by old favorite Oliver "Filet O'Fish" Willis.

Since we're on the topic, Oliver, maybe we should examine Obama's early Muslim upbringing more thoroughly.

Yes, now that I ponder that, I think it's a rather good idea.

6 What a POS!  I used to be baptist, and frankly I am ashamed that such hucksters exist that destroys one integrity and the tribes they belong to - let alone run for president.  If you are going to lie, at least be slick, like slick Willy.  He lies with class and finesse. But as a bridge player, at least try to finesse the lie with a little panache.  This was just plain dumb ass move in the age of the internet where hardly anything is hidden - or stay hidden.

9 aoshq janitor,

You're blaming the wrong guy.  It wasn't me who decided to make this primary about Jesus and Mormonism, was it?

Was that me?  Maybe it was but I forgot.  Maybe I actually was the one who decided that Huckabee should run on little else than the Power of God and start throwing out bigoted chum about other candidates' religious beliefs. Maybe I did all that and then just got amnesia.

OK, I can't keep this to myself anymore.  I did it.  You got me.  So sorry.  Won't happen again.

I was helping an old buddy move some old furniture around at the Sooper Sekrit Iowa Caucus C&C Bunker, and I accidently dropped an old lava lamp on the "Religious Intolerance Suppression Device".  That molten muthafucka seeped into all the openings in the external casing and completely shorted the whole thing out.  What the fuck do I know about that damn alien technology?  I just covered the machine with a dropcloth & a ficus plant, and walked right out past the front desk security guys.  Hey, it really wasn't my fault, you know?  I was doing fine, until that damn Malor came running into the room with his tighty whities on the outside of his pants screaming in a girly voice "OOOOOOOHHHHH!  I'm a MOOOOOOORMON!  Lookit my MAAAAGIC UNDERPAAAAANTS!"  Who the fuck wouldn't completely lose it on seeing shit like that?

And the worst part of the whole thing is that I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling morons.

18 Well, in his defense, he probably got away with it at home before he went national.

Exactly my thought while I watched the debate.  He actually believes he can bullshit his way through a national election.  It reminded me of Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom, "220...221...Whatever works."

Amazing, but in his defense, he did run in Arkansas.  The last guy who did that and got away with it had the help of a little fella from Texas named Ross Perot.  I'm not seeing that happening this year.

I'm not sure which group is more ridiculous.  The people who actually believe Huck made a innocent inquiry, PLEASE, or the people who get on their outrage high horse and insist they've never met an unpleasant Mormon.

click "read online" and enjoy. It wouldn't be fair to accuse all mo's of this sort of thing, but the church does bleed into the real world if you live in LDS areas.  Romney may be secular, but the Church doesn't work that way imo. Also, if Mitt ends up being the Rep. candidate people need to bring up and finish the conversation about the Mountain Meadows slaughter.  If the election was on Dec. 14 I would probably go with Romney, but he is going to have to deal with things in the general election if he is nominated.

30 How many people here have ever been to a Southern Baptist Convention, because I have.

I'm not a huge Huckabee supporter. I would probably with the Fred. if he would get on the ball and get back Fred! I disagree with Huckabee on several of political issues, but these type of insinuations Huckabee specifically and against religious conservatives in general are getting old.

Huckabee spoke at the Pastors Conference that year, which is a series of speakers who challenge and encourage SBC pastors. It wasn't some conference on Mormonism.

Yeah, the SBC knew what they were doing when they put it in Salt Lake City. They believe the LDS religion is false, just like they believe every religion besides orthodox Christianity to be false.

But none of that means that Huckabee had anything to do with the video, the books or anything else Mormon related at the convention. There are so many books and videos from the convention from so many different organizations and groups, it will make your head spin. It's hard for the convention, let only one speaker, to keep up with all that is there.

You want to go after Huckabee on immigration, spending, clemency, fine have at it. But this (and Hot Air) is getting bad with the religious discussions. As a Christian conservative, I know I need fiscal conservatives to make this work. I am a fiscal conservative. Don't forget that you need us, too. That's not some threat, just a reminder that we are all on the same team. We have differences in issues, but some of this is going overboard.

From Geraghty:

-------------------

"I'm going to call horsepuckey on Huckabee's claim that a New York Times reporter knew more about comparitive religions than guy with a theology degree."

Joe Carter, the director of research for Mike Huckabee, wrote in:

Jim,

Governor Huckabee doesn’t have a theology degree. He only spent a year in seminary.

I told Carter that I had gotten the crazy idea that Huckabee had a theology degree from his statements like, "I’m the only guy on that stage with a theology degree." And press accounts like:

I asked Huckabee, who describes himself as the only Republican candidate with a degree in theology, if he considered Mormonism a cult or a religion. ‘‘I think it’s a religion,’’ he said. ‘‘I really don’t know much about it.’’

Carter responded, "Good point. To me, a degree in theology requires a degree from a seminary. What the Governor has is a BA in Biblical Studies. Technically, that can be considered a “theology degree.” But its probably not what most people think of when they hear that term."

-------------------

So, maybe Huck isn't lying about the theology degree. Technically. But how does Jesus feel about someone being deliberately deceptive?  And how does Jesus feel about those who try and live by the letter of the law rather than the spirit of it?

OR...and I am simply trying to be as fair to Huckabee as I possible can, maybe he is saying that he has a tehology degree?

Posted by: hit and run at December 13, 2007 11:07 AM (jjNS6)

38 Again, I'm not a Huckabee guy, I just don't want to see any Republican attacked with left-wing tactics. I seen Ace link to Oliver Willis. Allah link to DailyKos. Hugh Hewitt link to Mother Jones.

Huckabee may have been tryng to go gutter on Romney. I don't know for sure, the brothers question was at least extremely stupid and in poor taste.

However, most of the people talking about the SBC convention don't know what their talking about. Huckabee's speech there was to pastors about how the government should tax less, spend less, while churches should be doing more and giving more - nothing about Mormonism at all.

I don't like all the disengenious attacks. Again, go after all the issues you want, but lets not start ripping out the throats of our own people here.

that's laughable. Want to know why?

The conservative bloggers like ACE are relying on attacks fueled by Arkansas leftists who have a all of Huckabees secrets listed in a little black book.

You people are really going to feel STUPID when you realize that the ammunition you have been using for your attacks has been provided by far-left liberals who have ALWAYS hated Mike Huckabee.

You're already SHOWING your stupidity by not going to the trouble to research things for yourself . Hell, all it takes is a little googling to find out that the Jesus/Satan/brothers thingy is a LEGITIMATE belief of Mormon theologians..."Church Fathers" if you will.

And...you've already SHOWN your dishonesty by claiming Huckabee is fueling the religion debate when your guy, Romney, dominated at least three 24-hour news cycles with his Texas speech last week.

Huckabee's question was legitimate. And if it did nothing else it revealed ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING!

Mitt Romney relies on his "Church Fathers" about important matters of faith.

Who will he rely on about important matters of government?

Huckabee/Barbour '08!

Wardrobe door:  while you're absolutely correct that Huckabee probably had nothing to do with the materials handed out to attendees at the 1998 SBC in SLC, I think you're missing our point.  Mike Huckabee told the Time reporter that "he really doesn't know much about Mormonism", but if that's true, you have to believe that he served as the Keynote Speaker at his church's yearly meeting and paid ABSOLUTELY NO attention to the materials handed out at said conference.  That stretches credibility just a little too much for me, especially when his church has a history of doing opposition research on every other religion out there to increase the efficiency of their criticisms.

I don't mind Huck taking shots at Mormonism or Romney personally, but I'd prefer to see him do it from the pulpit.  If he's going to play in the political arena, he's going to have to learn that the Constitution doesn't say "Baptists only in the White House".  This passive-agressive shot at the LDS church really pisses me off, and I consider myself to be born-again.  Just think how all the non-evangelical Republican voters think about these tactics, and ask yourself "Can a Social Con win the Presidency after chasing off all the other members of the Republican Party?"

Posted by: Russ from Winterset at December 13, 2007 05:17 PM (dyz/7)

Al-Ozarka, how can you claim that Romney's more sanctimonious than Huckabee?  Romney might have given a generic speech about religion in American public life (in which he only mentioned the LDS faith ONCE by name), but Huckabee throws out the "I'm a good Christian Man" meme out there more than John Kerry used the "I served in 'Nam" line?

And blaming Ace & other non-fans of Huck for where they get their info?  Me?  I'd rather prove that the charges are false, but hey, you keep working that strawman angle.  It really suits you.
