| Hillary Loses Lead In NH; AP Working On Big Story About Her "Plan C"I'm sad. We were really counting on the old girl to win this and then lose disastrously. A new poll shows that while the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president holds a comfortable lead in New Hampshire, the Democratic race has tightened dramatically. According to the latest WMUR/CNN poll, Hillary Clinton's 20-point lead has vanished. She now has 31 percent support, with Barack Obama in a statistical tie at 30 percent. John Edwards is third with 16 percent, and Bill Richardson has slipped slightly to 7 percent.John Edwards may be the only thing keeping Hillary in the race at this point. One would imagine that the great bulk of his supporters would flee to Obama were he to drop out. Comments1
Edwards will cut his losses and throw his support to Obama for a VP slot.

We need a new way to nominate presidential candidates. The current system seems to have become something that can only select the most freakish characture of both parties.

The primary system has caused interesting problems for the Democrats no matter how they've used it. If you drag the primaries out over a period of months, the candidates burn up a lot of money and are forced to spend a lot of time attacking and criticizing each other. By the time the fight with the Republicans comes along they've spent down the war chest, and so bloodied each other that the survivor doesn't look very appealing. Advantage Republicans. If you compress the primaries too much, then the predestined candidate (Hillary!) steamrolls the competition before they have a chance to get established - unless the public really despises the predestined candidate (as they despise Hillary). In this situation, a dark-horse candidate who isn't really ready for the job (OBama) may become the nominee before the public has a chance to see that the dark-horse isn't really ready for the big race. (Advantage Republicans). Unfortunately this year, we face our own darkhorse in the form of "Who-the-Hell (is) Huckabee" (Advantage - Canada)

I am actually very torn on this. On the one hand, I am sooooooo enjoying watching Hillary! go into full-panic mode as her "inevitability" vanishes before her eyes. Unlike many here, I am not so confident that she will be blown out in the actual election. Never, EVER underestimate the stupidity/greed/gulliblity of the American Public (TM). Her husband won election twice. Yes, I know she is not her husband by a longshot, but I can't help but be a little nervous becuase of the full-frontal assault the media will give whoever the R nominee is. As much as I hate to agree with liberals on this, I believe they may be right on the fact that a large percentage of the American public does indeed want nanny government to take care of them. Remember "Pony Tail Guy" from the 92 debate? Part of me thinks that it might be safer to eliminate her before the nomination. This would be unbearably humiliating for her and her sycophantic fans in the media. I believe that Obama is very beatable in a general election. He does have a very charismatic personality but when it is crunch time and people are actually in the voting booth, I believe the issue of (in)experience will weigh heavily on their minds. The Republicans are facing two big disadvantages here. One is money. The Dems are far outraising Repubs in this election cycle. Thanks John McCain. Second is the outright war the media will declare against the R nominee. The R's need to go on offense RIGHT NOW against the media and put them on the defensive. We are NEVER going to get a fair shake in the mainstream press and it's time we quit trying to make nice with the enemy. But what we can do is not let them create the template. I believe that the first R to call out the media with specific examples of blatant media bias would incredibly energize the base of the party. Right now, I can't see one candidate that really is lighting anyone on fire. Hatred of Hillary, although helpful, is not going to be enough to win an election by itself. It is a cliche, but true: We need to give voters something to vote for, not just something to vote against.

Ace: Obama vs. Huckabee -- who do you vote for? We need to give voters something to vote for, not just something to vote against. Why? I've been voting against people and issues all my adult life. Mostly because the parties have sold us out by gerrymandering in order to keep their seats, resulting in no competition and allowing the best ideas to win. At the state level, there is no competition between the parties and no competition within the parties. Ace, Those poll #s aren't real. Primary voters in key states lie. "What, you don't care about voters committed to a candidate, but you'll lavish attention on uncommitted voters? I'm uncommitted!" "What, Clinton has a lead and she's going to cut spending in my state? I'm switching my allegiance until the coffers flow more freely!" After the polls close, you'll wonder why you believed this crap now. Just like 4 years ago. Posted by: dustydog at December 12, 2007 01:41 PM (MDkjt) 20
I still think Hillary will get the nomination (and I know most here think that will seal the Democrat's fate), but as for her lead in the polls...it's been a long haul already and I can't see how anybody can sustain an insurmountable advantage over the period of time they've been and will be vying for the nod.
And, as for losing a primary, there's plenty of history to support it not meaning one hell of a lot in the end. Personally, I'm so sick of both sides and the every day back and forth I can't wait for the conventions so we can get it over with, one way or another. I have a feeling we'll see Hillary and Edwards. On the Republican side...I suppose it will be Rudy (McCain as a real long shot...if he's still alive)...but Rudy still has many closets to open, and who knows what we'll find inside. Posted by: Tom at December 12, 2007 01:44 PM (1kwK7) 21
dusty dog, people were saying the same things in 2006.
"They polled the wrong people (registered voters instead of likely voters)." "They overpoll Democrats." "The only polls that matter are the real ones." "Polled voters can change their votes before Election Day." So we disregarded the signs that we were about to get our asses kicked. Yes, polls are inexact. That's why they have a margin of error. They still provide useful indication of current voter sentiment and trends. Two statements that are in combination very important: Rudy still has many closets to open, and who knows what we'll find inside. ... the outright war the media will declare against the R nominee. The R's need to go on offense RIGHT NOW against the media and put them on the defensive. Say it loud, brother!! The MSM is the self-nominated guardian of the Dems and they will fight to destroy any R they figure is a credible opponent. The coming election is not between Republicans and Democrats, but between those of us who believe America's power is a force for good, and the internationalist MSM who see themselves as penitent citizens of Gaia.

The MSM is the self-nominated guardian of the Dems and they will fight to destroy any R they figure is a credible opponent. The RNC's a step ahead of everyone on this score: they've simply not put forward any credible candidates. That'll teach the MSM. Of course, the notion of the press as the guardians of the Democratic presidential nominee is pure fantasy anyway, intended to palliate America's wholesale rejection of the wingnut agenda. That anyone could have lived through the press's treatment of Bush and Gore, and still believe that, is testament indeed to the mass delusion that has brought conservatives, and the country, to where they are now.

Are you including the following:
The Weekly Standard, the Washington Times, Newsmax, The National Review, Townhall.com, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Ben Ferguson, Lars Larson, G. Gordon Liddy, Laura Ingraham, Neal Boortz, Michael Savage, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Larry Elder, Mark Levin, Michael Reagan, Ann Coulter, Hugh Hewitt, Laura Ingraham, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, etc.??
I guarantee you that those I've listed reach as at least as many and in many cases, even more American voters than anything you might feel represents the evil MSM empire.

> Ace: Obama vs. Huckabee -- who do you vote for?
I'd go for Obama in that matchup. Why? 1. Both would be bad presidents. Being able to blame the dems would help the Repubs take back the office 4 years later. And would be a HUGE help in the off year elections of 2010. 2. At his core, Obama is just another (liberal) politician. He'll make deals, he compromises. The Repubs in congress can work with him, try and limit the damage. We've survived worse presidents that he's likely to be. Huck is a idealist and a feel-good moron. You've seen how he does pardons and commutations. How'd you like to see how he picks judges or does diplomacy? Eeek. Posted by: Not Ace at December 12, 2007 03:28 PM (LhPLL) 45

Because all they do is lie! Bender, you're the one making that claim, not me. In order for the press--which just also happens to include Fox, WSJ, Rush, AEI, ad nauseum--to be guardians of the Democratic Party, there has to have been a whole hell of a lot of lying by the press, sufficient apparently to obscure from the American people all those Republican success stories. Like I said, delusion. Don't make me sick the Howler on you. Posted by: Beloved Weaver at December 12, 2007 03:43 PM (CNIL7) 47
Your Media At Work:
57% in a poll released today believe we are in a recession. So, obviously, 57% of Americans are dead, stinking wrong, although the Reuters report on the poll didn't mention that little detail. I can just hear the Leftoid Spin Machine: "If you feel a recession, then it's true... for you!" I wonder where gullible souls would possibly get the idea that we are in a recession when the economy grew almost 5% last quarter and hasn't had a negative quarter in six years. It's almost as if all these people hear is negative news about the economy! How could that be? Tell me more about that unbiased media. I have no idea what you do for a living, but if you don't think we're in a recession right now, you're dreaming. The housing market, construction, auto sales, retail sales, industries affected by oil prices, and many others are as flat as a pancake and it's not going to get any better for quite some time. Oh, and the banking and investment community is holding their breath, just waiting for the other shoe to drop on mortgages, foreclosures, credit, etc., all getting ready to report poor earnings and less than stellar future sales. Tom,
Your ignorance is astonishing. Read and learn: http://www.mediaresearch.org/biasbasics/biasbasics.asp As for the media, I note a few organizations you left out: the NY Times, the Washington Post, the LA Times, Associated Press, Reuters, CNN, NBC News, CBS News, ABC News, MSNBC, Time magazine, Newsweek magazine, NPR, ... I could go on, but what would be the point? The organizations I've listed above have dominated the news world for decades. This is changing, as people come to understand the massive bias they possess. The reason for the rise of the the people you listed is because of the response to that bias. Currently, the left-wing media reaches more people than the right-wing media. In time, this will change as people continue to abandon the left-wing media. The Democrats are worried about this, which is why they want to re-establish "The Fairness Doctrine", to censor conservative media. The left-wing media currently has the upper hand, and until it either loses it's bias or is replaced by something more fair, it is a factor in elections. Posted by: JayC at December 12, 2007 05:00 PM (H5zz/) 56
Oh, and about that recession? A recession is 2 consecutive quarters of decline in GDP. Since GDP grew in the 3rd quarter of 2007 (and in every quarter for the last 5 years), we are not in a recession.

No, Tom will tell you that NewsMax reaches as many people as the New York Times. He says Ann Coulter is MainStream Media, so it must be true! For those of us in the real world, the statistics after the last election tell us that over twice the number of Americans get their political information from major-network nightly news shows than get it from talk radio. Over three times as many people get their political info from nightly news than get it from internet news sites. Or you could look at ratings, which will tell you that Katie Couric is in hot water for only pulling in 50% more viewers per day than Rush Limbaugh gets listeners (and she's in third place!). A Pew study this year showed that almost half of Americans watch the network news shows and over half read newspapers, while 11% read blogs and 8% listen to Limbaugh. But if Tom is willing to guarantee that Limbaugh, Hannity, and NewMax reach more people than the three national networks and the New York Times... well, his Bizarro assertions are good enough for me!
