The Huckster's Foreign Policy: Live By The Golden Rule

Everything I Ever Needed To Know About Foreign Policy I Learned In Sunday School:

Huckabee did give a long speech on foreign policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in September. It combined a superficial rendering of conventional foreign-policy wisdom which of course included many unfair criticisms of President Bush with Huckabees inimitable folksy delivery. The former governors bottom line was that we should be nicer to other countries.

...

On Iran, Huckabee is at his most troubling. He accuses the administration of proceeding down only one track with Iran: armed confrontation. This is false, and the kind of rhetoric youd expect from DailyKos bloggers, not a Republican presidential candidate. Huckabee thinks it has been a lack of diplomatic engagement that has soured our relations with Iran: We havent had diplomatic relations with Iran in almost 30 years, my whole adult life and a lot of good its done. Putting this in human terms, all of us know that when we stop talking to a parent or a sibling or a friend, its impossible to accomplish anything, impossible to resolve differences and move the relationship forward. The same is true for countries.

This is the kernel of Huckabees foreign policy. He wants to anthropomorphize international relations and bring a Christian commitment to the Golden Rule to our affairs with other nations. As he told the Des Moines Register the other day, You treat others the way youd like to be treated. Thats to me the fundamental issue that has to be re-established in our dealings with other countries.

This is deeply nave. Countries arent people, and the world is more dangerous than a Sunday church social. Threats, deception, and as a last resort violence must play a role in international relations. Differences cannot always be worked out through sweet persuasion. A U.S. president who doesnt realize this will repeat the experience of President Jimmy Carter at his most ineffectual.

Not that what one blogger thinks matters that much, but if Huckabee gets the nomination, I'm voting Democratic. It's not just an idle threat; I just won't vote for him and in fact won't even vote third party or stay home. I'll vote for the Democratic candidate, even Hillary. I won't be a party to selling out everything the party is supposed to stand for to a liberal ideology. If we're going to have eight years of liberal rule, I'd rather the Democratic Party be governing, so at least they can take the blame.

And, quite frankly, Hillary is to the right of Huckabee on most issues, if only because she's politically afraid to do the kind of crap Huckabee does and dream of doing at night. She couldn't afford to be as soft as Iran as Huckabee would.

And I don't think I'm alone on this.

And... I do not want Huckabee setting the agenda for the GOP as de facto head of the party. I'd rather there be a (different) liberal in the White House, with the GOP Congress and Senate free to pursue genuine conservative policies, rather than having to support Huckabee's liberal impulses.

Not That It Matters Much... because Huckabee will lose in an electoral drubbing not seen since the last Carteresque liberal to run for president, Walter Mondale. The down-ticket damage will be enormous, and we may just lose our 40 Senate seats and thus open up the floodgates for whatever archliberal policies -- and judges -- Hillary or Obama decide upon.

I guess that will be my only rooting interest this coming cycle -- trying to reduce the brutal damage we're going to suffer in the Congress should the liberal Huckabee be our nominee and hopelessly split the party.

Dan Riehl came to the same conclusion last night.

I came to the conclusion earlier, but didn't think I needed to say it. Now with the Stupid Party about to commit its most Stupid Party Decision since, I don't know, Herbert Hoover's money-tightening during a serious depression, I think it's panic time.

Not only can't the GOP win with Huckabee, but it shouldn't. I can't even console myself by saying "Well, we've nominated an unelectable candidate, but at least we're staying true to conservative principles and perhaps, in time, this tactically-disastrous choice will yield strategic benefits."

Nope. The party seems determined now to nominate a candidate further to the left on most issues than Hillary (who at least triangulates to the right) and Obama (who doesn't say a frickin' thing, so who knows where he is).

But yaaaayyyy. We'll have a nominee supporting the Human Life Amendment and Federal Marriage Amendment which will never pass.

1 I just got done telling me wife, if I have to pick between Huck and any other democrat--I'm not voting, done deal.

We all went through the crap of judge confirmation and immigration when the Republican Congress went wobbily...I won't be apart of 4 years of a wobbily, compassionate conservative!

Please, can we agree at least on someone who is fiscally conservative and strong on foreign policy, ANYONE.

I thought we the Republicans had this thing wrapped up, I'd vote for Mitt, Rudy, Fred or John, all without a problem, but HUCK?  So what if he's a minister, sheesh, he just doesn't have a clue on foreign policy and to qoute, "the Presidency is not a [freakin'] internship!"

2 Huckabee is a disaster! Despite his recent endorsement, he is terrible on illegal immigration and is a hugh fiscal liberal. If Evangelicals manage to get him nominated and he loses hugh to Hillary, they will have a LOT to answer for in my eyes.

M'eh ... I'll vote for the Libertarian Party, just to give them that false sense of impending victory in the next election cycle.

The problem will be if the choice comes down to Obama versus Huckabee.

God Himself will have to scratch His head and ponder.

Same here.  The comfy chair really doesn't work well with loons and tyrants.  As much as I loath Hillary, I don't think she's as naive as this guy.  I also believe she'd pull the trigger if necessary - maybe for the wrong reasons (polling tells her its OK), but I believe she'd actually do it.

I would remind you that the Democrats are sure to raise taxes, stock the court with more liberal judges, give us mandated government run health care, make policy based on the cult of Al Gore, do nothing good about illegal immigration and in general continue to try to lose the WoT.  For starters.

You treat others the way youd like to be treated.

I'm with him on that one. That's the way I try to live my life.

For instance, if I were a smug, ignorant, global warmmonger, I would expect to be ridiculed so of course, I ridicule them whenever possible.

If I were a power-mad, religious dictator threatening the world, I would expect the US to send a cruise missile up my ass. It's what I would deserve and should expect.

It's how you apply the Golden Rule that matters. If you treat mad-dog killers the way you, as a non-mad-dog-killer, want to be treated, you're applying it incorrectly. You treat a mad-dog-killer the way you would expect to be treated if you were a mad-dog-killer.

Not a bad plan for a candidate with little money, support and name recognition.

What the bloody hell?

No, seriously. No, really.

He has said his religious convictions compel him toward being soft on illegals. And he's said his religious convictions are that we must be a stewards of the earth and stop global warming.

A few thoughts, Ace.

Search your comments-- hell, I'd link my blog, if I had still cared enough to keep it-- but I've been saying for years now that given the open election combined with the (relatively) weak field of likely GOP candidates for 2008, we had NO IDEA who would be competitive in 2008.  None whatsoever.  For years, people have talked up McCain, then Rudy, then Mitt, and all along, I've ALWAYS said-- we don't know squat about the field and what it's going to look like in the last months going into the primaries.  Whatever frontrunners were out there in 2006-2007 were likely to fall by the wayside once, you know, actual voters were consulted.

The model for this all is, of course, Bill Clinton in 1992.  No one knew who the hell he was in 1991; in 1993, he's President of the United States of America.

Well, guess what?  It's December 2007, and Mike Huckabee (who?) is charging ahead in the pack.  A man who isn't conservative, who is barely *Republican*, but says the right things to single-issue voters.

You, me, and the rest of your moronblog are single-issue voters: it's The War, stupid.  We're fiscal conservatives, yes, and damn if we don't want somebody who reduces the size of government, but at the end of the day, we want a pro-war candidate in office, and that issue trumps all others for us.   Well, guess what?  The folks supporting Mike Huckabee are also single-issue voters: they want a "Christian" President, and all that comes with that.  They don't care about his positions on anything else, they just like what he says and how he says it. For the last twelve months these people been told repeatedly by the MSM *and* the GOP establishment that their "Moral Majority" position may have mattered in 1988 and 2000 but it doesn't matter in 2008.  They'd just have to suck it up and vote for a Rudy or a Romney-come-lately and forget about things like judges and abortion and the role of God in America, etc., all because of The War.    The Huckabee surge tells me there is a large segment of the population-- the Iowa population, at least-- that's heard this message for a year but finally decided to hell with it.  They're sick of being ignored and belitted.  Nothing motivates the human spirit towards righteous anger better than a little condescension, and that's all these social values voters have gotten for years-- not just from the MSM (where it's expected) but now even the GOP itself.   Like you, I would never in a million years vote for Mike Huckabee.  He's not a conservative, he's not even a Republican-- not as I understand the party, certainly not as I want to understand the party.  He may be a swell guy to have a joke with, but as the GOP standard bearer, he combines McCain's domestic policy with Ron Paul's foreign policy delivered with the hard-hitting platitudes of Barack Obama in the tone of John Edwards.  He's bad for the party AND conservatism-- at the end of the day, President Hillary! is at least only bad to the Republicans, but would probably do wonders to focus conservatives.   Dammit, we need Fred to step the fuck up in his Iowa tour.  Grrrrrrrrr.   Anyway. . . I share your frustrations, if not your bewilderment.  I could have totally predicted Huckabee-- in fact, I like to think that I did.

I think Hillary would make a better president than Huck and if it came to it I would probably vote that way. This guy looks like Carter II imo. The world is still quite dangerous and we can't afford to elect a retarded minister president.  Even as VP it is a little troubling.

-McCain is still my pick, FTW

-Romney is #2. Where will "the rhetoric meet policy". Did he do a good job as governer in Mass.? For me, his LDS thing gives him bonus points. I kind of like Mormons even though they always seem to be BS'ing (does this help or hurt a politician? Uniball are they always BSing or are they always like that?) and his mormonism will drive all of the crazy left, the people I hate, insane. Maybe even leaving the country crazy.

-Rudy, meh. He has better hair than Mitt and a better name also.  I still don't really know anything about him other than that he cleaned up NY and has corruption issues.

-Fred! is out imo. Too many lobbyists and felons near him as well.

-Ron Paul, if your base is made up of Nerds, Computer Nerds, the white power crowd, stand up comics, probably nambla, chomsky fans, canadians and people who watch youtube videos about FreeMasons controlling the world you may win lots of internet polls but will win little else.

Dem's: Hillary-probably just like the other Clinton. It wouldn't be the end of the world or country, but it isn't a good option.

Obama- who? Why is he even running for president and why would I care about the audacity of his hope?

Who the fuck are these other people? Dodd?

Not that what one blogger thinks matters that much, but if Huckabee gets the nomination, I'm voting Democratic.

Now that's just crazy talk... not that I don't believe you mean it.

As someone who's said numerous times that I'll sit it out if a convincing conservative (and neither Huck or Rudy fit the bill for me) isn't nominated, voting Hillary in protest is a very bad idea, and here's why:

A vote for Hillary will be interpreted as support for her, her agenda and the Dems in general.  It won't be viewed by either party, the MSM or general public as dissatisfaction with the Repubican nominee, and thus doesn't encourage the Republican party to start backing candidates that are conservative on more than just Gays, Guns and God (in Huck's case).

However, simply sitting it out or voting 3rd party would almost certainly be viewed as a lack of support for the Republican nominee- that sends a message that we're mad as hell and not going to take it.

As much as it pains me, at this point I think Huck is worse for the country and the party than Hillary would be.  If it's Obama, then I don't think there's much practical difference between him Huck.

I guess judges would be the big difference and while I know a Democrat would be horribly on that, I can't say for sure Huck would be much, if any, better.

The Christian right sucked it up repeatedly for the GOP and recieved damn little in return for the money and work we provide as the base of the party.  George Bush has done what the party wanted on the war and slashed taxes.  Good on him.  What exactly has he (or the GOP in general) done for the social con wing of the party?  Um... well, he nominated two swell guys to the Supreme Court who've done a total of NOTHING on issues that matter to us.  How about leading on the issue of Abortion?  Nope, nothing there.  The March for Life is 22 January.  Is he going to be there?  Nope, going to miss it again this year.  By my count Bush didn't cave on federal funding of stem cells (no one cares) and we've got partial birth abortion eliminated (which almost no one would defend and was a political winner for the GOP.)

The GOP had control of Congress and the White House for six years and 55 senators before the 2006 meltdown.  What was done for pro-lifers as a thank you card?

<crickets>

I want Fred to win.  I think Huckabee is inexperienced and will probably lose if he wins the nomination.  But this "I'm voting for Cliton stuff" is retarded and frankly a little insulting.  If I'm supposed to 'suck it up' and vote for someone whose behavior I find repugnant, maybe you guys on the fiscal and defense side of the party should 'suck it up' for once if Huckabee wins the nomination.

And by the way, if Rudy wins the nomination, I'm voting for him, not Hillary.  Because I'm not a freaking moron.

I reached the same conclusion a week ago. Glad I'm not the only one. But I won't panic until I see the actual votes that come out of Iowa. If Hucksterbee wins Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, I'll just ignore politics all next year. Frankly, it would be quite freeing to not give a shit about the presidential election. Really, if Huckabee becomes the GOP nominee, my give-a-shit factor for the election won't event register in the pico-fuckit range.

59 "They're sick of being ignored and belitted.  Nothing motivates the human spirit towards righteous anger better than a little condescension, and that's all these social values voters have gotten for years-- not just from the MSM (where it's expected) but now even the GOP itself."

You mean it's the Rudy fans' fault?  I actually believe that.  If we hadn't had this scenario where a big part of the party gets pissed on by the nominee choice, the reverse notion -- everyone ELSE getting pissed on -- would never have gone anywhere.

Of course, the only way either of these guys could top 50% in a two-man primary would be to run against each other...  Which would be a disaster all around.  We need NEITHER Huckster nor Rudy.

Huckabee is a disaster. Why the heck can't you find a competent Baptist to vault into the limelight?

I'm with #55. These "Christianists" stuff envelopes and knock on doors before elections for the Repubican Party and get paid back with being told to get stuffed and knock it off for their efforts.

I'm not a Jesus thumper and have issues big time with these folks body- snatching my beloved GOP; but give them thier due, and realize that without a real leader that challenges the focus-group mentality of modern politics and offers to incorporate some sort of morality into the party line, we are lost.

Still, I look forward to seeing Ace linked at Andi Sullivan's site.

63 Maybe Hillary's schitk is on the money: it's inevitable that she's gonna win. And the right-wing evangelicals are going to help her. The Republicans don't seem to have anyone that is serious about checking government growth, lowering taxes, policing the borders, or keeping the country safe from terrorists and assorted tin horn dictators, etc. The Dems are so far gone that they hardly need mentioning, and have been so for a long time. Maybe both parties need a royal ass kicking/cleaning, just to get rid of the deadwood, asskissers, and the nutjobs. From that vantage point, maybe running Elmer Gantry against Lady MacBeth makes some kind of crazy sense: it will hasten the ushering of the much-needed cleanup in American politics, due to the fact that whomever is elected will throw the country into a wild disequilibrium. Not very encouraging, but possibly inevitable. All I know is that I've never seen such a pathetic field of candidates, or such an ignorant pack of voters as the country now has.

That sort of gets to the point...what more can a President really do about abortion? How about stem cells? What else do you want a President to do on issues you care about?

Let me ask you and any Christian right voters here...are you really only about abortion? If the Democrats had a 'big tent' on that issue, would a lot of social cons feel at home there?

There's no doubt Rudy is a very liberal Republican but he's pretty good on some conservative issues (the war, taxes, school choice, law and order). He's a lot better than Huck or Hillary on them, that's for sure.

And please everyone..spare me the Rudy is a Democrat stuff. He's not and no he's not a perfect or even good conservative, just more conservative on a lot of things than Huck and Hillary.  I am not supporting him (though I could) or making the case for him. I am just making a couple of discrete points.

public...We have Romney to thank for Huckabee...

Give their laudidah the place it deserves.

Matthew 23

11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?

18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.

19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?

20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.

21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.

22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.

32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Matthew 24

23Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.

25Behold, I have told you before.

26Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

27For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

28For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

You bitch and bitch that you're so abused, like when Bush prohibits stem cell research but creates the largest compassionate entitlement program since F.D.Fuckin.R.

And yeah, "the mormon". OoooOOOooOOOohh.

If Romney has any problem, it's that he's not mormon enough. He's waffled in the past. He's pledging all the right pledges now, but some don't buy it. Fine. Whatever.

74 Huck's been swarmed. It'll take the polls a week or two to catch up as re-awakened Christian voters decide where to turn (or churn). They may even wait until after Christmas. Good thing Huck's been exposed now rather than at whatever point he'd come up for VP consideration. He may have opened the door for someone other than Romney in the early states, though Romney is now in the position to rescue the party from him by exceeding suddenly lowered expectations in Iowa. Still think that's a needle's eye. Good timing for Fred, for once, to be available in Iowa. Good timing for John to be available in NH.

75 With a Republican president, the Democratic controlled Congress would fight tooth and nail (or at least pretend to) against any aggressive foreign policy. A Democratic president, in contrast, would get a lot more leeway. Think about it: if Hillary Clinton - who would certainly be ready to wield a big stick to prove she has balls - wanted to preemptively strike Iran, she would get a lot of support from hawkish Republicans and party line Democrats. In fact, Hillary Clinton is probably the ONLY candidate who could maintain a prolonged and aggressive military campaign in the middle east.

With that said, when faced with a choice between Clinton, who I abhor on every policy issue except her willingness to play the hawk, and Huckabee, who would single handedly destroy the Republican party's claim to be the "limited government" title and usher in a new era of Statism and 'daddy' government, I will vote for Hillary. Plus, it would give me the progressive  rhetorical bonus of being able to say "I voted for Hillary, so now I have absolute moral authority to criticize Democrats".

I would vote for ANY candidate in either major party (including Ron Paul and excluding John Edwards) before I voted for Huckabee.

Except on abortion, Hillary, Obama and Edwards are at least as "Christian right" as Huckabee (i.e., not, but they hang Jesus talk around their mostly righter-than-Huck positions). But this isn't about abortion.

No Republican candidate except Ron Paul can be trusted to do anything about it ("judges" or whatever) that the Jesus gang wants. But they're not for Paul. They're not even for Rudy, who's full of shit, yes, but lying to them just they way they like to be lied to. They're for Nanny Huck.

Ace,

I am with you on this one.  It is painful to say, but you are so right - we (conservatives) would be so much better off with a real liberal as President than an "uber-Christian social con" who wants a Nanny state and is more naive on foreign policy than my two year old son.  His statements about Iran, for example, could easily have come out of Jimmy Carter or Sean Penn's mouth.  Even Hillary, shrewd enough to know that she actually would have to govern were she elected, would not issue such useless pabulum like implementing the Golden Rule with respect to foreign policy.

The Republican party needs to implode and the conservative movement needs to start from scratch if Huckabee wins the nomination.

Posted by: Conservative Mike in Hawaii at December 11, 2007 05:30 PM (m6Zud)

90 Grant -  seriously, what else do you want a Republican president to do?  Even if he could somehow get some strong anti-abortion legislation passed, the courts would just kill it.  I have a lot of beefs with Bush, but I think he's held the line on socials issues as well as he could.  The country is way too evenly divided to use a constitutional amendment, and anything short of that will just be struck down by the courts.  All that said, I think most sensible Republicans recognize how much the Social Cons contribute to the party, so let them know exactly what you want.

I'm an evangelical Christian

DiT...I did not know that. Granted the 'Christian Right' is no more monolithic than any other voting bloc but I would think/hope it stands for something in addition to opposition to abortion.

Perhaps you're not so much bigoted against them as much as you just don't want to give them a "win" and hate their way of life but either way it's hard not to detect the animosity. Also, in many ways you guys are just as bad a liberals in that you are not shy about trying to impose your religion (you=christianity, them-secularism/enviromentalism etc) on others via the government. I used to think the Dems were a lot worse but that was before I found out your entire Political value system was secondary to "purity" on the abortion and gay marraige issues. Basically what you guys are saying is: "I'll trade a guy who has always been against abortion and gay marriage (even though he won't be able to do much about it) for the principles of limited goverment, border enforcement, toughness on crime, low taxes and every other damn thing the Republican Party used to stand for". Sorry long rant. This whole deal is just pissing me off so much. Special thanks to the media for helping to engineer this thing by not really reporting on Huckabee's many weaknesses. I'm sure they'll get that corrected in time for the general election, bastards.

105 We had this fight back before '06 didn't we? Those of us who agreed to hold our noses and vote republlican sure got a great payback. Maybe it's time to kill the party in order to save it? ell, let's see: At least when a Democrat gets into office the press will start talking about how great the economy is, so people will start buying with confidence. The war will all of a sudden be something worth fighting, and, oh by the way, we are winning now. The only problem with all this, the thing that throws it out the window for me, is that it will reward the asshats for the scorched earth policy they have been playing for the last seven years. The Press will prove to themselves that the breaking of their compact with telling the truth was worth the occasional Rather and Beachampembarrassments. Well worth the cost, in their estimation.

The one reason I will still vote republican is to deny the MSM/Kos/Democrat crowd the satisfaction of crowing about how well their strategy worked. It's sure working right now. If they still win it all, it won't be because of my vote (or lack thereof). If they are insufferable now, wait till they win.

By the way, once Huckabee gets the nod, the press will absolutely cut him to pieces. On both sides of the issues. He has no idea how bad it will come, and he will not be ready for it when it does. He can't be the nominee, or we're sunk.

Ace,

It isn't me thats pushing Huckabee, and I don't live in a state where my primary vote is early enough to really matter.  If I had the say it would be Rudy, Fred or Mitt.  That said, I cannot see helping one of the Democratic cantidates, nor giving up even the possibility of having some conservative influence in the WH.

Bush isn't exactly a conservative, but at least when the people screamed about Meirs and Illegal Amnesty v2.0 someone was listening.

112 I agree with you save for one thing.

Instead of voting for Hillary, Donald Duck will be my write in candidate, if Huckabee wins the nomination.

My party is making me sick. From this stupid idiotic non-issue issue of Romney's Mormonism, to selling out everything else the party is supposed to stand for because Huckabee is a devout Christian, and is (supposedly) strong on social values. Can't say I support letting a dangerous rapist back out on the street so he can kill someone. Is that being strong on social values? On punishment fitting the crime?

If we nominate Huck, then we deserve to lose. And I will take some solace in that we fumbled the election ourselves, and a worthy candidate was not defeated by liberalism.

Really freakin' brilliant, GOP.

If we lose the War those people left alive - I will not be one of them - will be living under Sharia law. There will be no gay marriage and no abortion.

Happy?

If anyone can say it would be better to live under Sharia than to continue to permit abortion then the conversation is over. That is the mentality that is supporting Huckabee no matter what his views on anything else. And yet these people have the nerve to call their opponents Republicans In Name Only.

Better than being an American In Name Only.

118 "voting Hillary in protest is a very bad idea, and here's why:

A vote for Hillary will be interpreted as support for her, her agenda and the Dems in general.  It won't be viewed by either party, the MSM or general public as dissatisfaction with the Repubican nominee, and thus doesn't encourage the Republican party to start backing candidates that are conservative on more than just Gays, Guns and God (in Huck's case).

However, simply sitting it out or voting 3rd party would almost certainly be viewed as a lack of support for the Republican nominee- that sends a message that we're mad as hell and not going to take it."

I think this is right on the hickey-doo

No shit - every time the dimms win anything, by whatever means, they announce they have a "mandate." They did it in the last election, where the vote could HARDLY be called a mandate. Didn't matter - they won - so it's a mandate to do whateverthehell liberal bullshit they want to do.

I agree - sit it out - and that's exactly what I'll do if that moron gets the GOP nod. It will solidify the notion that Republicans are morons. They'd be right. Or left.

At least I won't have to change my registration from Rep. to whatever. I already did that during the immigration debacle.

120 Gov. Huckabee is certainly no worse a candidate that Gov. Bush was at this point in the 2000 cycle--and is no worse from the standpoint of policy. If the issue is that we don't want another Pres. Bush in the Oval Office, then make that point. As for the choice between Gov. Huckabee and any of the Democrats, if you're serious about betraying your party to make such a childish point, then more power to you. Don't expect other Republicans who work their tail off in the elections to give a hoot.

133 I kind of liked Huckabee (and I like McCain and Obama and Edwards, so maybe that should be the kiss of death around here) until some of his nastiest and most idiotic beliefs were recently brought to my attention (I'm in S. Korea and
not plugged into the cable news cycle though I still read the papers and blogs).  But even if I agreed with all of his policies and thought he was well prepared (ha!), I'm Jewish and he seems to be making it starkly clear that he is interested in being only a "Christian leader."  The Christmas message was weird (starting off a political ad with a denunciation of political ads).  It wasn't offensive, but if Huckabee doesn't think I'm the kind of person who should support him who am I to disagree?

I guess I'm used to presidential candidates pandering obnoxiously to Jews and it's odd to see one write us off completely by being so exclusive in his pandering.  Even Romney tried to be sort of inclusive, even if his real point was to play up the similarities and avoid mentioning the differences between Protestantism and Mormonism (fuck it, you can figure out for yourselves whether you're all Christians or not.)
