Woman Alleges Gang-Rape Cover Up By US, Halliburton

I find it hard to believe the US or even the evil Halliburton would cover up a gang rape. Doesn't the US have an interest in ferreting out such malefactors and duly punishing them?

Apparently not. The Narrative says that gang rape is actual government/corporate policy.

I can't say this is nonsense, but it does all seem a bit hard to believe. And very convenient in terms of a multimillion dollar lawsuit against a very deep-pocketed corporation against whom a significant portion of the public is willing to believe literally anything at all.

A Houston, Texas woman says she was gang-raped by Halliburton/KBR coworkers in Baghdad, and the company and the U.S. government are covering up the incident.

Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job.

"Don't plan on working back in Iraq. There won't be a position here, and there won't be a position in Houston," Jones says she was told.

She was gang-raped, I'm to believe, and the men covering up her gang-rape by Halliburton employees believed that no longer allowing to work at the place at which she was gang-raped would serve as an effective threat?

In a lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR, Jones says she was held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by KBR, which posted armed security guards outside her door, who would not let her leave.

"It felt like prison," says Jones, who told her story to ABC News as part of an upcoming "20/20" investigation. "I was upset; I was curled up in a ball on the bed; I just could not believe what had happened."

Finally, Jones says, she convinced a sympathetic guard to loan her a cell phone so she could call her father in Texas.

"I said, 'Dad, I've been raped. I don't know what to do. I'm in this container, and I'm not able to leave,'" she said. Her father called their congressman, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas.

"We contacted the State Department first," Poe told ABCNews.com, "and told them of the urgency of rescuing an American citizen" -- from her American employer.

Poe says his office contacted the State Department, which quickly dispatched agents from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to Jones' camp, where they rescued her from the container.

According to her lawsuit, Jones was raped by "several attackers who first drugged her, then repeatedly raped and injured her, both physically and emotionally."

Jones told ABCNews.com that an examination by Army doctors showed she had been raped "both vaginally and anally," but that the rape kit disappeared after it was handed over to KBR security officers.

And do these Army doctors have names? Why are they silent?

It feels all un-PC to call a woman alleging a gang-rape a liar but it sure seems convenient that there is no evidence whatsoever for this, all apparently destroyed by a large conspiracy of men who, for whatever reasons, feel a burning passion to cover-up and abet a brutal gang-rape.

'Cause that's what we men do. We help each other get away with gang-rape all the time.

I used to snark about liberals' strange beliefs about what someone's "Republican buddies" were willing to do for them. They always claimed George Bush invaded Iraq just to help his "Republican buddies."

So: A friend will help you move a couch.

A best friend will help you move a body.

But a Republican friend at Halliburton will illegally invade a country and help you gang-rape women.

You know, I've got Republican friends. They're nice people. But they're not quite that willing to lend a hand, you know?

I guess I'm not the only one saying it: Rusty Schacklelford's bullshit alarm is also beeping.

1 I'll go out on a limb here....she's lying.  She's probably also insane.  Rape kits don't just "go missing" from military hospitals.

2 This is a real question:  Is there cell phone service in the Green Zone, and could one place a phone call to Texas from it?

3 I'd go as far as to call her Beauchampian.  Good on ABC news for falling for it...I guess the media companies really are on a race to see who can lose credibility fastest.

20 I tend to think there may be some kernel of truth here, but it has been adjusted to better fit The Narrative.  Look, KBR and others employee a lot of non-Americans in places like Iraq, many of them from places with rather retrograde views on women.  So I guess I can beleive that the rape part may well have happened.  The "gang" part maybe - is two a gang?  Some of the other stuff rings less true - why confine her under  armed guard?  Maybe for her own protection, though that seems odd.  I do not believe that the Army would hand over a rape kit to a private company.  That just seems antithetical to the beaurocratic nature of the beast.  I also question why this was not brought forward sooner.

Soldiers in Iraq use their cels to call home all the time.  Anyone stationed there long-term would likely have that ability on their phone - no that it's cheap.

22 There's nothing like a bunch of Neanderthals making light of a woman who may have been raped.

Why not run some of your comments by your wives or girlfriends and see if they share your opinion that she must be lying.

See if they think it's as hilarious as you appear to think it is.

23 Reserve judgement. No need to hurry. If ABC is pushing the story that is up to them. Her lawyers are motivated in another way and will say anything.

There is plenty to investigate. Army doctors, a Congressman, medical records, employees, guards, the sympathic guard, phone records, the observations of those who got her out (if it happened that way).

When did this happen? Did the Congressman demand followup from the state department and the Secretary of the Army?

Rape as policy simply isn't. But women do get raped.

Gang rapes are exceedingly rare. Whenever I hear of one in the news, it sets my BS antennae twitching. Among female schizophrenics it's common to have hallucinations about being repeatedly raped along with governement conspiracies to cover it up. This case has both aspects.

In my lifetime I can only think of two publicized gang rapes that actually occured, the 'wilding' in NYC back in the 80's and some high school kids in Orange county who raped a retarded girl. All the rest: hoaxes.

27 This is from her journal at the link:

July 26, 2005 US/ July 27 Baghdad- I sent several e-mails to management to ask to be moved into a container because I was experiencing cat calls even when I was walking through the barrack to get to the restroom. I received the response that I would be fine if I “go to the spa." There was no spa in Greenzone, Baghdad . I started socializing with some Halliburton/ KBR employees, including approximately four or so firefighters. One of these men prepared me a drink and joked that there were no “rooffies” in it, and handed it to me. After having a couple sips, I passed out. I was drugged.

July 28, 2005 US/ July 29 Baghdad- I awoke the next morning in the barracks to find my naked body battered and bruised. I was still groggy from whatever had been put in my drink. I was bleeding from between my legs and my breast implants were severely disfigured. (I found out later that my attackers tore my pectoral muscles due to the brutality of the attack). One of the men who had raped me was brazen enough to be lying in the bottom bunk of my assigned bunk bed. After getting to the clinic and having a rape kit performed, and pictures taken of my bruising, I was locked in a container with no food, no way to call my parents, and was placed under armed guard by Halliburton. I did not have access to soap, toiletries, a tooth brush, or any of my belongings. I was unable to leave, therefore I was imprisoned. After some time, one of the guards allowed me to use his cell phone out of sympathy. I called my father back in Houston, who quickly contacted Congressman Ted Poe, who then initiated a Congressional Inquiry to get me out of Baghdad . At this point I was in a state of shock, severely traumatized, and was scared for my life.

July 29, 2005 US/ July 30 Baghdad- The state department took me to a male psychiatrist to help me stop crying. I was recommended “no caffeine.” Halliburton had a meeting with me and I was told that if I went home, I would not have assurance that my job would be held. I was also informed that there is no medical leave for injured contractors.

Emphasis added.

Happened over three days, the rape, the imprisonment and the daring rescue.

Let's cool it with the "she made it up" stuff guys- it seems unlikely if her congressman and the state department was involved and she was seen by a doctor- someone who's going to make something like that up is going to come up with a story less easily confirmed or denied- like the Duke stripper's story

It's possible that she was isolated- perhaps to protect her from retaliation, and it's possible she's exaggerating slightly, but this doesn't strike me as a "she made it all up" kind of story.  It's also possible that KBR is trying to keep things quiet- they really can't use negative publicity right now.

As for the government aspect of it- the article mentioned that the contractors are in sort of a legal grey area not subject to the American legal system, so a full blown coverup wouldn't be necessary if there's nothing they can do anyways.

And the RSO and probably the DCM would have had the ranking Haliburton and or KBR rep in his office at the Embassy that same day; from where they would have all gone over and had a nice long talk with the Ambo. And then it would have gotten really ugly.

It's not clear what treatment she was given, but again it's too easily confirmed or denied that she was as badly injured as she claims- that's not something one would generally make up if false.  And I don't see wanting to draw that much scrutiny right away.

Usually when these stories are made up it's a he said / she said sort of thing along with a story that isn't easily proven or disproven- few if any injuries, a doctor exam that could point either way, a delay in reporting, etc.  I'm not seeing that here.

58 Did a really quick search on her name and in the first two pages there were stories from May, 2007, about a week or so after the papers were filed.  That's almost two years after the alleged incident took place.

Sorry, but whether the actual crime took place as she described it or not, the whole thing seems fishy.  From the "foundation in my name" to the fact that this is hitting the news shows less than one year from an election when the name of the company has become synonymous with Republikkan EVIL, well, I question the timing.

Oh, and we've only heard her side of the story.  I know, I know.  Nobody would believe Chimpy McHitlerburton's buddies even if they could produce a shipping container full of documented evidence, but still.

Keep in mind that she wasn't in the military or employed by them- she was a private employee.  I'm not sure how involved the military would or could get when a civilian is involved.

I wasn't there and don't know what happened, but there seems to be a lot of truther-esque "a ha!  a minor unexplained fact or inconsistancy!" cynicism going on here.  Is it really so implausible that she was raped and injured, and her employer or co-workers- who had reason to fear bad press- would've tried to keep it under wraps in a war zone?

Are you suggesting that she completely made up the part about her injuries, something that could easily be disproven if false?  It's possible given what little we know, but given that she could've told the same exact story without including the torn pectoral muscle detail it doesn't seem that likely to me.

Did a really quick search on her name and in the first two pages there were stories from May, 2007, about a week or so after the papers were filed.  That's almost two years after the alleged incident took place.

So she didn't go to the media right away- so what?  Her Congressman confirmed that her father called him about it shortly after the alleged incident- it's not like she waited two years to make the allegations.

The case is case number 07-CV-2719, US District Court for the Southern District of Texas (Houston Division).  Anyone who is bored and has PACER access can read the complaint, which is 47 pages long, and which is actually in its fourth iteration, the original Complaint having been filed on May 16, 2007, a First Amended Complaint having been filed on May 24, 2007, a Second Amended Complaint having been filed on May 30, 2007, and a Third Amended Complaint having been filed on October 9, 2007).

I have skimmed the Third Amended Complaint, but not the firsth three versions, and the substance of the rape allegation I tend to believe, though I don't really believe the cover-up allegations or that KBR and Halliburton had an official hand in harming this girl.  It seems more likely that it is just a couple of employees gone wild.  The complaint is short on factual allegations and long on endless repetition of similar causes of action against KBR and Halliburton, which is typical of this type of thing.

Of special note to those who despise the lefty cocksuckers in the MSM is that the cause of action that Ms. Jones brought against the United States in previous versions of her complaint was voluntarily non-suited (Ms. Jones filed a motion to dismiss the claim on September 17, which was granted on  September 26, 2007) long before ABC published this story.  In other words, ABC is lying in saying that the US is alleged to have covered this crime up.  The plaintiff isn't saying that now, so ABC has failed to perform even rudamentary fact checking on this case (of course), in order to somehow bring the EVIL BUSHITLER REGIME into the case.

Fucking MSM.  I hate 'em.

Hollowpoint, the army medical folks see civilians in the green zone all the time.  Who else is there to provide medical care?  So you think the military medical folks over there are brutal, uncaring, incompetents who haven't ever been trained in how to properly handle rape accusations?

Not to mention the state department folks.  Yeah, this would have been huge in state circles.  And the ambassador at the time?

Hon. John Dimitri Negroponte (born July 21, 1939 in Greater London, London, in the United Kingdom) (ronunciation" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helpronunciation">pronounced /ˌnɛgroʊˈpɒnti/) is an American diplomat. He is currently serving as the United States Deputy Secretary of State. Prior to serving in this capacity, he was the first ever Director of National Intelligence.

Negroponte served in the United States Foreign Service from 1960 to 1997. From 1981 to 1996, he had tours of duty as United States ambassador in Honduras, Mexico, and the Philippines. After leaving the Foreign Service, he subsequently served in the Bush Administration as U.S. permanent representative to the United Nations from 2001 to 2004, and was ambassador to Iraq from June 2004 to April 2005.

From the complaint:

Jamie Lee Jones was first forced into a sexual relationship, against her will, with her supervisor, or risk losing her job at a time when her.  After escaping that environment, she was harrassed, and threatened in Baghdad , before she was ultimately the subject of a brutal sexual attack by several attackers who first drugged her....  .....

The attack never would have occurred but for the "boys will be boys" attitude that permeated the environment that defendants first created, then failed to warn Jamie about ......

64 I hate to pile on, but something smells here.

Her attorney on the Complaint, L. Todd Kelly is also the Director of Legal Affairs for her foundation.

Her husband, Joseph Daigle, who is also listed as a Plaintiff on the Complaint, is currently the Chief Financial Officer of her foundation.

According to the Complaint, she was allegedly raped on July 28, 2007, (para 17) but the Complaint was filed on May 16, 2007. (She was raped AFTER the Complaint was filed? Small detail, but really, really sloppy for a lawyer to miss.)

There is a Reuters article from 6/29/07 that ABC seems to have missed which also does not jibe with the Complaint. There is one tiny little detail that may or may not matter, but seems easy enough to verify: In the Complaint she claimed she was raped in a 2-story "co-ed dormitory", but in the Reuters article a KBR spokesperson claims that "none of the living quarters are co-ed".

Gang rapes are exceedingly rare.

I volunteered at a rape crisis center for eight months. We saw over a dozen gang rape victims in that time and none of them were crazies. They ain't rare.

As to this case, I'll wait for more facts to come out before I judge. Pisses me off when people jump to conclusions on incomplete evidence, no matter the issue or what side of it they stand on.

If you read her compaint, there are a couple of interesting details:

Her husband is member of the military and based out of San Diego. While working for KBR in Houston she claims she was sexually harassed by a supervisor and forced to perform sexual favors on him. After her complaint she was transferred to a different group located in Iraq. She worked in Iraq for two years. She complained about a sexually hostile environment the day before she was raped. When she woke up her breast implants were ruptured. After reporting the rape, she says she was placed in a trailer with a bed., shower, and sink but without a television. She doesn't claim that she was physically restrained to the trailer, although she does refer to a guard later on.

And where did I imply they didn't provide proper care?  She wasn't military, wasn't working for the military, and thus the military may not have had a role in an investigative capacity.  I've no reason to believe that they provided inadequate care.

I have no evidence or strong reason to believe that this young woman- someone's daughter and wife of a soldier- is lying... and neither do you.  If I'm wrong in thinking that she was in fact raped- fine; it'll be because of a lack of information.

If you "I question the timing" types are wrong in your implications that she's a liar, then you deserve whatever scorn you get for immediately labelling an alledged gang rape victim as a liar.

The naivete to piously stutter "the Army bureaucracy would never lose evidence" is pretty amazing and demonstrates an enthusiasm for respectable male authority structures which would never ever ever enable old boys' networks or turn a blind eye to a little hanky panky on the side committed against a woman who obviously got what was coming to her (hey, she was entering a war zone, with a boob job no less, at the age of 21 - fresh meat ?).  The hankering by the weak for authority figures who confirm comfortable if destructive orthodoxies and status quos.

Seems perfectly reasonable that someone with tech training (notice that she was an IT/comms contractor ?) would be a reasonable candidate for Iraq.

Behind that is a more interesting question - was KBR in the habit of occasionally procuring young women via employment offers, whose real purpose was to provide sexual services to the corporation's male employees ?  Fresh meat again.  Published evidence of Dyncorp's involvement in sex trafficking in the Balkans lets us conclude that the PMC community on average is certainly not above this sort of mentality or activity.  Further, the evidence of pervasive rape and other sexual abuse of women in and out of uniform in Iraq and elsewhere contradicts the notion that the US military would never let this happen or that hours of EO training do anything to prevent it.

One may conclude that it is irresponsible to put young women into a war zone where there are no sexual outlets for the males under extreme stress stationed there.  But that does not justify anyone behaving like an animal.  If the perpetrators are found guilty they should lunch on a flash hider and have the backs of their heads blown out.  If the corporation is found to have systematically condoned this behavior or institutionally facilitated it by systematic or occasional procuring activity, its executives deserve the same fate.

73 For what its worth the court filing from May 2007 twice mis-identifies the date of the alleged harassment and assault by two years: Paragraph 17 says Jones told her supervisors about harrassment on "July 27, 2007." Paragraph 18 says that the gang rape occured on "July 28, 2007." This girl was right out of high school practically, and she has breast implants? She's presumably not going to college, so her skill set was what, exactly?? if this story is true there should be serious jail time for the guilty. rot in prison. but i smell a rat. its inconceiveable to me that so many contractors, 99% of whom are mature experienced guys in their 30's with wives and kids back home, would behave so cruelly and violently and cavalierlly and have it covered up or explained away. if all or parts of this story are false, then this woman should be held accountable by law.

78 I don't know if her story is true....but statements in the media like "an examination by Army doctors showed she had been raped" and "there is a rape kit and it shows that she was assaulted" set off red flags. The only thing an examination/rape kit can prove is whether or not semen and other evidence of sex is present. A rape kit cannot determine if the sex was forced. Even if there's evidence of rough sex, that still doesn't confirm it was rape. The media should know this, so their quotes insinuating that the rape kit confirms her version of events are irresponsible, at best. Not to mention nobody has actually seen the exam results. And I'm skeptical because there are apparently no photos of her injuries, since such photos are standard procedure whenever rape is alleged.

http://www.jamiesfoundation.org/Jamie.htm

According to her journal, this individual arrived in the Green Zone on July 25, 2005.

The following day, July 26, she writes that she was being sexually harassed by KBR / Halliburton employees. Then, sometime between July 26 and July 27th, she was allegedly raped.

That's interesting. All of that within less than 3 days.

I find it curious that in her court documents and other sources she alleges that the rape occurred either in "Camp Hope" or "Camp Eagle", but in her journal the rape allegedly occurs in the Green Zone. Someone help me out with the geography. Those are the same place, right?

I especially like the picture on her ID card and the fact that she apparently actually believed someone when she was told that, "...it is more likely that I would get in a car accident in the US , than anything happen while stationed in Iraq”.

2005 was a good year for us in Iraq, right? Real calm as I remember.

She is definitely lying.  How could it possibly be true that men rape.  Men don't rape.  They are lured into consensual sex and then women change their minds.  Happens all the time.

Also how could it possibly be true that if a powerful corporation was facing a black eye over a brutal attack on a woman they would attempt to cover it up and destroy evidence.  It is beyond imagining.  Every corporation in the United States is of pure heart, the executives angels, the middle management cherubim.  Impossible.

If she isn't lying and every world is true, she is still lying because it reflects poorly on Halliburton, the State Department, the WOT and President Bush himself.

She should have just shut her mouth and took one for the team, like a true American patriot.  Hoo-hah!

At least the phone call should be able to be traced.

A bit more mercy and pity for the alleged victim would be very appropriate.

Or does anyone who posts here publicly and seriously go in for legalizing rape?

89 Gang rape is NOT rare. What is rare is a conviction. Does not matter how horrific the situation. As you can see from this "dialog" above, people tend to automatically blame the victim right off the bat, calling her crazy before they try and recognize how widespread rape actually is. 1 in 3 women are raped in their lifetimes.

The fascinating thing here is that almost none of the comments are made by someone who understands the complex elements of sexual violence. And yes, I'm making that assumption thanks to the flippant comments and ignorant remarks many of you have made.

RAPE is the most underreported and underconvicted crime in the US.

Our country and others have a history of using rape as a tactic in wartime.(Vietnam, anyone?)

Our country is interested in saving its own ass. OF COURSE it's going to deny a heinous attrocity that people could attribute to the war itself.

Rape isn't the responsibility of the victim/survivor him/herself.  (I emphasize the 'him' becuase 10% of rape victims are male).  It doesn't matter how old she was, what she looked like, or whether or not she had breast implants.  The onus is on the perpetrator of the crime, not the victim.

As to the question about her taking 2 years to attempt prosecution: What would you do if the government you expected to provide you protection was helping to cover up the offense?  Most people would already feel defeated.

Posted by: EatIt at December 12, 2007 03:27 PM (hlRTC)

92 And if anyone is surprised that our government could cover something like that up, you clearly haven't been paying attention.

Posted by: EatIt at December 12, 2007 03:28 PM (hlRTC)

93 You are everything that's wrong with male perceptions of victims of sexual crimes.  Congratulations for condensing so much misogynistic prejudice into such a relatively short commentary.

You sarcastically said: " 'Cause that's what we men do. We help each other get away with gang-rape all the time."  But the sad fact is that yes, they do.  They do it every single day.  And men like you who instantly reject even the slightest possibility of it happening make it sickeningly easy for them to do.

The FBI's stats of falsely reported rapes is 3%.  That is to say, about 3% of reported rapes are misreported or false for whatever reason.  About the same as any other crime.  Which is to say, that in 97% of cases, the woman or man is telling the truth.  They just don't have evidence to convict.

So thank you for helping to ensure that future generations of rape victims will be called liars and whores for reporting they were victimized.

I do. I grew up in the town that birthed Halliburton; I've many close friends and relatives who have worked there, and let me tell you: This is not shocking to me. This isn't even surprising. I'd love to go into more detail here, but given the vindictiveness this company displays and the fact that I still know a few people who work for the company, I'm afraid to say much in public.

But I will say this: To my direct knowledge, they've covered up an egregious physical assault and harassed an employee/victim into silence on at least one occasion before. Covering up a gang rape? I wouldn't put it past them.

Rape, especially gang rape is not uncommon in a war setting. (Read Against Our Will by Susan Brownmiller. It chronicles the history of rape.)   Currently number of rapes of Iraqi women has dramatically increased since the war.  War is violent and rape is an act of violence.

Why would a woman publicly acknowledge she was raped knowing that her claim would be scrutinized by every reporter or blogger AND the allegations be heavily fought legally and in the media by the big guns of a major corporation? Her motives, her mental stability and her morals will be questioned. Why would any women consent to a rape kit by a doctor who is a stranger and then be willing to pay the expense an attorney to sit through weeks of a rape trial with no guarantee she will win.  Plus there is no criminal justice for her alleged perpetrators.  Why is the woman willing to devote her energies and a large segment of her life to an incident that never happened?

This case brings up the larger question of “out sourcing” our military during a war.   For what I can see these contractors are not held to any legal or professional standards other than the service they provide.  Their jurisdiction falls under the State Department but where is accountability legally especially in unstable foreign country?  When a crime is committed by a contractor, who is suppose to gather evidence, investigate and prosecute the offender?  The State Department?  Does the State Department have a criminal division for that purpose?  Unless there was a trained professional team handling the criminal investigation from the beginning, the case will be compromised.  Therefore the only recourse for the victim may be a civil suit.  There is motive to cover-up any wrong doing from KBR.  Blackwater may get by killing Iraqis but assaulting an American female who is wife of a soldier does not make good press back in the States.

While you are questioning the veracity of this woman’s account, ask who has more to lose in this case. In that answer you might find the truth.
