NBC Flip-Flops On Airing "Controversial" Pro-Troop Ads (Updated Below)

I'd still like to boycott these nasty bastards. Whether they've succumbed to public outrage or not, what sort of bad chemicals do they have in their heads to have made them make this decision in the first place?

NBC reversed course Saturday and decided to air a conservative group's television ad thanking U.S. troops.

The ad, by the group Freedom's Watch, asks viewers to remember the troops during the holiday season. NBC had refused to air the ad because it guides viewers to the Freedom's Watch Web site, which NBC said was too political.

But in a statement issued Saturday evening, NBC said:

"We have reviewed and changed our ad standards guidelines and made the decision that our policy will apply to content only and not to a referenced Web site. Based on these amended standards the Freedom's Watch ad will begin to run as early as Sunday."

NBC' head of standards and practices, Alan Wurtzel, notified Freedom's Watch's media consultant Saturday by e-mail, writing: "This will confirm that the Freedom's Watch spot is approved for air."

NBC initially said that airing the spot would violate the network's prohibition on controversial issue ads. Wurtzel, in an interview Friday with The Associated Press, said NBC found nothing wrong with the ad's content, but rather objected to the link to http://www.FreedomsWatch.org, viewing the Web site as too political.

The group's home page is critical of liberals and has a link to a page urging lawmakers not to "cut and run" from the war in Iraq. The home page also links to another Freedom's Watch page dedicated to ways to assist the troops and provides links to organizations that send care packages to soldiers.

UPDATE (DrewM.): The lawyer who originally objected to spots is a big time Democratic donor. Try to contain your shock.

For me boycotting NBC would mean not watching Lost -which is pretty easy considering the show airs what, six episodes a year? And Office -still easy with the strike.

So now that I'm contributing to FreedomsWatch- thanks NBC! - I might as well follow through with a boycott. A letter or five explaining why also in the works. Looks like Date My Mom owns all my tv loyalty.

3 So NBC surrenders just like Pelosi and Reid and the other anti-American-armed-forces fools finally will. When they realize they're all alone on the side of the terrorists and wackos, and are facing most of America and all of it's military, they must figure out only a death wish could keep them fighting that battle.

But if I ever get a Nielsen box or whatever I'll turn them off.

8 This just makes the MoveOn.org ads _more_ outrageous.

They don't consider the material at MoveOn's website as 'controversial'? WTF?!?

9 I can't boycott NBC because I never watch it anyway. Damn.

All these Liberal/PC pussies will cave when you stand up to them! That's the problem - no one is willing to get in-their-face stubborn with them.

If - 20 years ago - some boss had told some wussy employee (who was complaining that "he told me a dirty joke")  to just shut up and go out and get fucked - things would be a lot better now.

A great deal of this PC bullshit can be dismissed with a succinct Fuck You! Or Blow Me! but it must be done RIGHT IN THEIR FACE.

Life sucks.

What the hell happened to Journeyman?

And Heroes is done I think for a while. Chuck is fun, could live without it.

Monday night is the only time I watch NBC. Mostly because of Heroes.

Most of the other shit I watch - like on Scifi - comes out of Canada. Or Japan (animation). Or is allready reruns I'm just catching.

So the writers strike, while I miss out on a few shows, was wonderful schadenfreud. I guess they resolved that or something which is too bad. I was hoping the whole thing would implode.

I got rid of satellite which I need even for local reception two years ago. The service sucked and the amount I paid for the crappiest show was not worth it. Now, I Netflix like hell.

Because I am surrounded by actors who throw all nite parties several nights a week, I am hoping the writer's strike last forever. However, I don't think actors are honoring the picket lines for writers. There is certainly enough production still going on.

13 I don't watch NBC either. The only reason I even watch tv is to make fun of people. Like that condescending bitch, Martha Stewart. Or those bratty little bastards on Kid Nation. Dramedy actors just aren't any fun.

Freedom's Watch, a group backed by wealthy Republican fundraisers, has emerged as one of the best-financed conservative groups. It seeks to be a vocal advocate of President Bush's current policy in Iraq.

i don't recall moveon.org being described as "backed almost exclusively by billionaire democrat fundraiser and socialist, george soros. it seeks to undermine current US policy in Iraq" with every mention in the WAPO.

17 Don't watch much TV - except the military channels, DIY, and Discovery. Nothing but crap anyway. Anyway - I fired off an email via the link someone posted in yesterdays thread to both NBC and GR. Told'em my family and friends were boycotting both NBC, GE, and anyone who advertises on that channel. Still am - reversal notwithstanding. Also mentioned the moveon ad.

To GE I mentioned rather than buying $4k worth of new appliances from them I bought Fisher & Paykel (New Zealand), and was buying one of their ranges for an additional $2300 next week.

Don't destroy my allusions that that helped the effort some

Parkinson's drugs 'made me gambler, thief and gay sex fiend'

Graham Tearse in Nantes

The Observer

A French court is set to award substantial damages to a 47-year-old father-of-two with Parkinson's disease who was ruled to have been turned into a gambler and thief, with compulsive homosexual urges, by the drugs he was being treated with.

I must admit I sent kind of a nasty email to NBC.  I dropped a few F-Bombs in the note.

NBC finds anyone thanking the 'troops' controversial because they can not understand why person or organization would spend money to thank the US Troops enemy.

Thanks for reminding me to 'F' GE as well.

It was nice of the Nothing But Caca network to decide to air the Freedom Watch ad, but from what I hear there are still plenty of reasons not to watch any of the alphabet soup networks.  Now if Fox would sack Geraldo, maybe I would think about getting one of them TV gadgets.

Posted by: John Galt at December 08, 2007 10:51 PM (F5RrO)

24

If they think this is going to exonerate them, they'd better think again. The alphabets have been losing market share for years. Now the big newspapers are sliding into the red. Rupert Murdoch is preparing to give the NYT a run for its life. There's a lot of sweating going on in some corporate boardrooms. Someone should learn to read the handwriting on the wall.

But somehow I think they won't. The left is nothing if not self-delusional.

26 Well what do you know, another "liberal" lawyer wanting to censor someone elses views because they differ from his.

Gotta love liberals. They're all for 'diversity of opinion'....as long as it agrees with their point of view.

27 And this is another reason that the liberal news media can't be trusted. Disgusting.

For me boycotting NBC would mean not watching Lost -which is pretty easy considering the show airs what, six episodes a year? And Office -still easy with the strike.

Feel free to watch Lost, if and when it comes back - that show is on ABC, not NBC.

On NBC itself, the only show I ever watch anyways is Heroes.  And I'd like to say I'll boycott it... but I know I won't.  I'm such a slut.  *sobs*

If you're wanting to watch Bionic Woman, you can sometimes, irregularly, catch it and Heroes on Sci Fi.  Total pot luck though on when they do, and they'll stop showing those episodes on a whim with no explanation or rescheduling.  But even then, you run into the problem that Sci Fi is, I believe, owned by NBC, so then you get to decide if Sci Fi deserves boycotting as well for the sins of the father, etc.

30 It's nice to see the outrage generated by talk radio and the internet force NBC to suck conservative dick.  You know they are not enjoying this.  In the good old days, they could have rejected those ads and nobody would have ever known.

Of course it's "controversial", because a liberal network deciding whether or not to thank American troops' sacrifice for this country, is against the nihilistic programing.

The only time I watch the "major 3" networks is during football games. Other than that, I'm only aware of them when someone posts one of their mealy-mouthed opinions.
