Rush Stealth-Endorses Fred! Thompson

He says he's not endorsing, but he is.

This is old by now but someone suggests I post it.

He also suggests reading Thompson's remarks on Charlie Rose, and Rush's remarks about those remarks.

Well, look: If the Limbaugh semi-endorsement can vault him into a potentially winning position, terrific. Frankly I'm surprised there hasn't been much impact from this yet; I doubt there's a more influential conservative out there than Limbaugh.

1 Fred!

2 Now was that so hard?

Embrace the Fred.

3 Yeah, I know I'm supposed to be turning away from Fred! because he's not exciting, but my heart can't tell me no.  I like the guy, and I appreciate his rumpled suit corniness.  I like a guy who seems to realize that being president is likely to be a huge pain in the ass rather than a means of banging the interns or establishing a Workers Paradise.

4 A presidential candidate who doesn't promise to fix every focus-group issue has my vote.

Posted by: Michael Rittenhouse at December 05, 2007 04:43 PM (zS9LP)

5 Good for him.  Fred needs to turn this into some momentum and we'll get this party hoppin'.

Posted by: Sobek at December 05, 2007 04:46 PM (6GK9U)

6 Thompson's the obvious consensus candidate. He's also a good candidate, insofar as what he believes in is concerned. Compared to Bush, he's twice the communicator, and actually understands what he is selling - even if he doesn't jump up and down while doing it.

Rush did make the comment last week after the Rep. YouTube debate that Fred! was the only one who sounded truly conservative.

"I like a guy who seems to realize that being president is likely to be a huge pain in the ass rather than a means of banging the interns or establishing a Workers Paradise."  -- Kensington

HA!  I love it.

Exactly!  I like that, prior to 2007, Fred probably hadn't even given much thought to being president, as opposed to these other guys who've been practically pissing themselves at the prospect for years and years (and, in the case of Her Thighness, decades).

The Hell with it!  I'm going to donate another hundred dollars to Fred right now.

12 I doubt there's a more influential conservative out there than Limbaugh.

True.

And his endorsement would matter if the Republican Party, or any significant percentage of its voters, were conservative. But it doesn't, because it isn't, and they aren't.

'94 was a long damn time ago.

That is good news.

14 I'm with Rush on this: if we can't have Duncan we'll settle for - sigh - Fred.

Posted by: ricpic at December 05, 2007 05:11 PM (dvyRd)

15 Hey, a Rush endorsement on a moron blog! It's a Fred Campaign Viagra moment.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at December 05, 2007 05:13 PM (Y0gTb)

16 ricpic, maybe this could be parlayed into a Fred!/Duncan position. That would be pretty sweet. And Fred! is still a playa. Testing the edges but in nonetheless.

...being president is likely to be a huge pain in the ass rather than a means of banging the interns

You seem to be describing getting banged by the interns.

Afterall, Fred has been rumored to have a colorful and wide-ranging sex life...

It's all starting to make sense.

I've actually been watching the Fred-Charlie Rose interview. Nice quote:

Rose: Would you increase the number of tax cuts? How would you look at the revenue side?

Fred: In the first place, I don’t subscribe that a dollar in tax cut equals a dollar in revenue lost.

Rose: Are you close to being a supply sider?

Fred: Yeah! Very close! (chuckling)

Posted by: Cuffy Meigs at December 05, 2007 05:35 PM (JefgB)

22 I'd be inclined to agree with Rush on this one.  Fred's got some really good positions on the issues and I really like him as a candidate.  It pains me that he hasn't gotten the traction I would expect, but it is what it is.  Hopefully he can turn things around!

Posted by: Joe at December 05, 2007 05:46 PM (l4TRc)

23 Speaking of interviews, check out Jeff Beck's Duncan Hunter series:

Jeff Beck interviews Duncan Hunter - Part 1

Sorry about he threadjacking, but having links to interviews of second-tier candidates who are actually conservative might prove useful in diluting the exposure The DecidersTM push. There's a series of them from this recent interview, so it's more than just a snippet of policy.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at December 05, 2007 05:50 PM (Y0gTb)

24 Other stuff from the Rose interview:

Charlie Rose: "You constantly say in this campaign that you are a conservative. What does that mean today?"

Fred Thompson: "It means things that are consistent with God's design for man, is consistent with human nature, it's consistent with the lessons of history, the lessons of ages. They found form in the Constitution I think and what our founding fathers believed. They understand that man can do great and wonderful things, but man is prone to error and sometimes do terrible things. That too much power in too few hands is a dangerous thing. That power is a corrupting thing."

Charlie Rose: "In all of that you didn't mention abortion, gay rights, all things that have been part of recent presidential elections."

Fred: "Those... Well you are talking about different things there. Those are issues that are before us, which derive FROM principles...Principles are what guide you in coming to positions with regard to issues. You know the Declaration of Independence said that our basic rights come from God and not from man. The founders talked about you know life, liberty and the importance of that. And that everything is based on those basic principles. And I take those principles and you know for example I come to a pro-life conclusion there. And when we had issues you know for 8 years when I was in the United States Senate about whether or not the federal government should be funding, for example, abortion related activities and things of that nature you know, the application of those principles in that instance told me the answer was no properly."

How many of our other candidates would you actually know what "natural rights" are?

25 Glenn Beck, not Jeff Beck. Sheesh! I can't even say 'twas a typo. Yeah, I'm a moron.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at December 05, 2007 05:52 PM (Y0gTb)

26

Another key quote re: torture:

Fred: I'm telling you, as President, if the lives of a bunch of American citizens were at stake and I thought that there was a good chance that an individual had information and could impart imformation that would help save those lives, I'm just saying, that I would do whatever is necessary to get that imformation from that person. I would authorize that. Whatever is necessary to save a number of American lives (emphatically).

Everyone needs to watch this thing.

31 Hey, when I'm not playing guitar or working on cars, I could interview someone if I wanted to.

Posted by: Jeff Beck at December 05, 2007 08:16 PM (f7A+e)

32 Is anyone besides Teh Fred! putting out actual position papers?

I mean, I found something that Biden wrote about the War in Iraq, and even that was less nuts-and-bolts and more "Bush sucks".

Seriously: We only know where two candidates stand. One is Fred. And the other is Hillary! because she's always been standing beside us. I'm not sure what she's planning to do from that angle but that's where she stands.

Posted by: moviegique at December 05, 2007 09:29 PM (1y5Vr)

33 People can say what they will about Fred's alleged "hesitance" to get down and dirty and do the politics as usual thing, but in truth - he is the ONLY candidate who is the kind of person the Founders thought should be a leader.

NOT a career politician.
NOT a "hungry for the job" type.
NOT one who thirsts for the power of elected office.
NOT a lying, thieving scumbag like the majority of politicians.

34 I'm with Fred in 2008.  Fred has more substance than everyone else and he doesn't alienate a major constituency of the party.  People say he's not dynamic enough, but if the Dems don't nominate Obama, a folksy old curmudgeon is still going to look far more appealing than The Glacier in the general.

Hey Jeff Beck!

It's me Eric. Man, you're still soundin' real good!

Good to see an old friend supportin' The Fred, even though we're not eligible to vote in th' Yanks election.

Call me some time, we could jam and make some bread.
