Jimmy Carter, Part II

In past posts about the candidacy of Mike Huckabee, I said I didn't want to become the anti-Huckabee blogger.

Allow me to recant that statement. We simply have to stop this man from getting any further in his quest for the presidency. Mike Huckabee is simply unqualified to be the commander in chief in a time of war.

Go to Hot Air for the video and the Washington Post story, but here's the statement.

MIKE HUCKABEE: I’ve been to Guantanamo, I was there, I guess it’s been about a year and a half ago. I think the problem with Guantanamo is not in that its facilities are inadequate. It’s the symbol that it represents. It’s clearly become a symbol to the rest of the world as a place that has become problematic for us as a nation. I was quite frankly impressed with the quality of the facilities and even the attention to care that was given to the detainees, but that aside, it doesn’t alter that Guantanamo to the rest of the world is a symbol that is not in our best interests to continue pursuing.
Guantanamo is not a "symbol." It's a facility (and a relatively nice one, as far as detention centers go) where we keep people who have pledged to do us harm. If we close the facility and let these people go, some will keep their promises.

Powerline wonders if Huckabee is "too moralistic" to be president. Personally, I think it's a combination of moralism and misguided optimism, with a healthy dose of inexperience in world affairs. Comparisons have been made to a former U.S. president from the south, and I've always thought those comparisons were a bit harsh.

Now I'm not so sure.

Huckabee is bad on taxes and immigration. He's got overly-statist views on the limits of government power and now we find out that he lacks the fortitude to withstand international criticism of our foreign and military policy. The Huckabee boomlet has got to stop.

2 Does Huck think he will get any votes fromt he morally preening gasbag lefties who think Gitmo is worse than any of Hitler's concentration camps? Of course they wouldn't give two shits about Gitmo if it was Clinton's idea. They'd be calling it neccessary and humane.

3 If the Huckster's surge has anything to do Chuck Norris's endorsement then this is a perfect example of an urban legend/internet joke gone horribly wrong. Could it be that some people actually believe Chuck can kick the suns ass?

5 Hey Slub!  Check out the new update on this story at Hotair.  Looks like Huckabee did a flip-flop on this from a story back in June of this year.

According to Matt Taibi at RollingStone, Huckabee is: a "nut job"...has "batshit" inside of him...is a "Muppet"...is "full-blown nuts"...Paul and Kucinich are more sane... he's "God-humping"...and is "full-bore nuts".  Oh, but he can play the guitar, therefore almost totally awesome for a minute.

And let it be known that i'm full-bore batshit nuts for reading political articles in RollingStone.

9 The decline of the security issue in the minds of voters - partly a result of military success in Iraq and elsewhere - has opened the window for the take-a-flyer, hopes-not-fears, masturbate-the-base candidates:  Huckabee and Obama.  Huckabee makes Christian So Cons kvell:  They imagine a Presidential campaign in which one candidate, their candidate, overwhelmed the electorate with the good news that Huckabee so ably spreads.  Obama makes lefties kvell:  They imagine a Presidential campaign in which one candidate, their candidate, shames all the old white racist warmongers, and passes the global test with flying colors.  This was always a danger, though it was Romney, not Huckabee, who seemed to be positioning himself for an election in which security concerns were subordinated to domestic issues, and it was Fred, not Huckabee, who seemed better positioned to exploit southern Christian regionalism.

Unless some bad guys give the public reason to remember why no sane person should give a flying fuck about the expensing of Rudy & friends' SECURITY detail, it really should be up to Fred and Mitt to take down Huckabee.

Yes, he's from Hope, Arkansas*.

*Yes, it is entirely fair to completely disqualify the state that gave us the Clintons.

dan beat me to it.  I remember seeing Fox & Friends gush over Huckabee's weight loss.  BFD.  Sorry Arkansas, you keep him, you're becoming the Massachusetts of the South with the shit you send or want to send to Washington.

Saw a blurb that Huckabee's campaign is screwing with the polls to make him look stronger than he is.  I will never vote for this man.

I think he's absolutely right.  The left has promoted, with help from the media, this image of Guantanamo as a place where innocent people are sent to be held indefinitely without trial and subjected to torture for the "crime" of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He goes off the rails when he suggests that the answer is to give in to the leftist propaganda and close the place down, rather than working harder to get the truth out to the public.  I mean, prisoners need to be held somewhere, and it doesn't matter where they're held, the left will peddle the same BS about the new prison as long as a  Republican sits in the White House.

19 V the K  absolutely not.  And the dems know that too, which is why they are pushing Huckabee.  GOP voters are not looking for Bush redux.

20 The very concept that you would shut down an important facility for no reason other than the fact that petulant whiners complain about it is morally offensive.

Huckabee isn't too moral, he's clearly not moral enough.

The "too moral" meme is part of the support the MSM is giving him because he's the most Democratic of Republicans. And probably a weak opponent for Obillary as well.

Posted by: Merovign at December 04, 2007 05:11 PM (IaYDo)

21 "too moralistic" to be president

Where I come from, we just call that kinda thing "too stupid".

Posted by: Purple Avenger at December 04, 2007 05:54 PM (wWoFq)

22 The problem with Huckabee is that he's a Southern Democrat who happens to be anti-abortion, so he has to run as a Republican.

But that doesn't make him one. He's not a "populist" (populists are anti-illegal immigrant), he's a Democrat.

Posted by: A Guy at December 04, 2007 06:15 PM (KqaNf)

23 That's a pretty good analysis, he's a Democrat who can't really file as one. Why on earth Republicans would want to vote for him I can't say. His sudden popularity I think is largely due to his being unknown before and coming across strong in the debates. As people learn more about his policies and history he'll tank, I expect. Just gotta get that to happen before the idiotic primary system gives him too much momentum.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at December 04, 2007 07:32 PM (hfyfI)

24 Guantanimo is a symbol. It's a symbol that says: Screw with us and we shut you up in a little hole on an island, and occasionally dunk you underwater till you get all freaked out and snitch on your unholy brethren. You attacked us as part of an uncivilized throng of jackals, and we're dealing with you in as civilized a way as we can muster. And we'll keep you there until we're sure you can't be a threat to us anymore."

I like that symbol. Mr. Huckabee? buh-bye.
