| Gabe, You Ignorant SlutYeah, I read your post. You missed my point. I'll let Ace and Malkin respond for themselves. My criticism was twofold, and you left out an important part of my analysis. Did I complain about the questions CNN selected? Yes. Maybe you are comfortable having conservatives intentionally portrayed as a sort of Frankenstein's Monster made up of scary end-time evangelicals, trigger happy survivalists, segregation happy racists and John Birch Society members, but I'm not. It is neither a fair depiction, nor an accurate one. Flip the image. If Fox News had held this debate and portrayed the Dem Candidates as Gaia-Worshipping, Tree Spiking, One-Child Policy Forced Abortionist, NAMBLA members it would have been just as wrong, regardless of what questions they asked. If convicted child-porn enthusiast Gary Glitter pops up showing interest in a Democrat during his YouTube question, the damage has been done regardless of how profound his question on Tax Credits for Renewable energy might be. Under your "assumptions", you just let a professed Richardson supporter off the hook for pretending to encourage a Ron Paul run. You fail to see the problem with that? That is beside the point, though. What you failed to mention was the other aspect I raised. As bothered as I was by the questions (which as they come under even more scrutiny appear to have been specifically designed by Democrats to influence the public perception of who Republicans are and what we stand for), I was just as outraged by the Republican candidates failure to call "bullshit" on the proceedings. To the extent that there were "victims" on that stage, they were "victims" by choice. While Democrats may be comfortable assuming that role, it was disgusting to watch Republicans pliantly accept it. I wanted someone in the GOP to produce what I called a "Coverdell Moment." It didn't happen. In fact, Romney made the matter worse. By declaring the Rebel Flag to be so racially divisive it ought not even be seen (with no apparent qualifications), not only did he basically slander a large segment of the South as irredeemable racists, but he did so in a way that validated the little punk who asked the irrelevant question. That punk has since admitted that he wanted to create a wedge issue. Mission Accomplished! Fred!'s answer was better, but still fell short of what should have been said. Quite simply, CNN rigged a debate in order to divide and smear Republicans, and to create wedge issues where none existed before. And the GOP candidates stood there and took it. For you to excuse this on the grounds that "well, hey, the questions were good" is ridiculous. Or, charitably, naive. Come on, man. You're going to be a lawyer. Are you telling me that if an Opposing Attorney pulled the same kind of tricks, you wouldn't object to the questions? You wouldn't be looking in your Rules of Civil Procedure or your Rules of Evidence for a way to remedy the intentional prejudicing of a jury? I'm fairly sure you would. Unless, of course, you limit your practice to "International Law". I don't think the UN picks their Secretary general thru YouTube debates.Comments1
A lot of the criticism of the criticism of the "debate" seems to center around the assumption that the MSM has always been and always will be a leftist tool, so why worry?

This is just too heavy for a blog discussion. Without regard for Gabriel's argument, my beef with his post was simply that it was more suitable for an article at NRO (or AmericanThinker.com) than a blog post.

Gabe, You Ignorant Slut Let it out there boss, don't hold anything back now. Otherwise I agree with your points, especially when CNN... well: Bingo! Plus I love this line of yours, mind if I make it into a bumper stricker and plaster it on hippy's cars? Unless, of course, you limit your practice to "International Law". Just because we expect CNN to douche it up doesn't mean we shouldn't point it out. There is a whole world of people out there who think it's the most trusted name in news, and that deserves criticism. Posted by: Dave in Texas at November 29, 2007 08:16 PM (FXakj) 6
Hot damn! I can comment! OK. I didn't think the questions, really, were that bad. I thought the debate, was decent. At it's worst, it's normal - what you'd expect from these TV debates. At it's best, there were some damn good questions (not these plants, they were no better or worse or hell, even different, then I'd expect a reporter to ask). And I bet a bunch of dumbass republicans would have been asking the same questions even if they were republicans, CNN could have found them. Maybe this is an argument in favor of letting republicans ask the democrats questions at their debates. But really, the dems weren't the ones with the good questions anyway...BUT, they did provoke some good responses from the candidates that I liked. But, I'm pissed off. Fox news just outed 2 more democrats - (by just I mean 2 hours ago - I COULDNT POST) the guy with the 'why don't blacks vote for the GOP?' question is an Obama supporter. The guy with the FARM SUBSIDY question is a DEMOCRAT! That could have come from a republican. I hate farm subsidies and love that question. But there's no good answer. I hated the candidates answers. They supported AG subsidies....but really, they can't not. You can't win a primary without them. But that's the point! It was a democratic activist asking this question and he knew that! Sneaky bastard. HOW GODDAMN MANY ARE THERE? We're up to like half of all the goddamn questions. I'm really pretty fucking pissed off and disgusted. I'm not suprised. I'll get over it. It's basically the same shit we deal with every day and nothing abnormal to see here. But still, I'm fucking pissed. They had a GOP primary debate and let decided, partisan democrats ask all the fucking questions. Posted by: Entropy at November 29, 2007 08:18 PM (HgAV0) 7
Framing matters, it has real world consequences. We can't let the MSM get away with talking down and then ignoring success in Iraq. We can't let them talk us into recession or carry the Democrats water on a whole host of issues. Most importantly, we can't let them set the narrative for who conservatives are and what they care about.
Anyone who will cede this ground to liberals is simply not interested in victory. Posted by: Drew at November 29, 2007 08:20 PM (hlYel) 8
On the original post I commented thusly:
"Good post Jack. This is a non-issue that is, in and of itself, designed to engender pointless debate. Like burning the flag. It only provides division. Because of the passion each side has for the argument, no answer will satisfy. The confederate battle flag has different meaning for different people. My grandfather's grandfather, a Yankee, fought at Gettysburg. He married the sister of a confederate general. Her family disowned her. He then went to Utah as a Presbyterian minister. Brigham Young asked him to leave, but being a veteran, he declined and advised the Mormon that he was armed. Most families in America have ancestors on both sides of that conflict. Many people feel strongly about this issue, and many other issues. That is why this nation is great. That is why soldiers fight and die to defend others rights to disagree. There are few "good" answers to this type of question. Your suggested answer is one." Jack is once again correct. You should not answer such questions as they are designed to "divide and conquer". The correct answer should have been either: "Nice question, Are you a plant? Do you realize that you have just insulted one quarter of the population?"; Or, "Excellent question. Many people feel that the confederate battle flag is a racist symbol. On the other hand, many feel a deep sense of regional pride that is not based on race, only on creed. That creed is, "we want our freedom from big government" and "loyalty to State". Keep cranking Jack. Posted by: MAJ O at November 29, 2007 08:20 PM (xSyZn) 9
Not one motherfucker on Earth honestly cares about Confederate flags. The fact that the "question" arose, and the candidates dignified it, proves they're all full of shit. Posted by: Retired (Not Gay) at November 29, 2007 08:22 PM (k5JzA) 10
And Gabriel, just look at the bias aspect of it regardless of the result (which I agree with you wasn't terrible). This shit don't fly. NEVER would you get all these republicans asking questions to democrats like this. NEVER. You get a couple maybe who are upfront about their issues, like the 'gun question' guy Allah is talking about. Maybe. No one knows. Maybe. But for the GOP debate? HALF OR MORE OF THE FUCKING QUESTIONS. All coming from smartasses trying to sabotage the debate. Posted by: Entropy at November 29, 2007 08:22 PM (HgAV0) 11

I do not understand why Hotair.com and conservatives bloggers advocated that Republicans should do a Youtube/CNN debate. Anyone with half a brain will know it is not in the best interest to have a debate on CNN/Youtube. Yet Hotair.com whines to high heaven that if the Republicans don't have a debate on CNN/Youtube it will be the end of the GOP.

Nine democrats and counting, some actively involved in campaigns or political or labor groups. ALL declared in favor of a specific democrat candidate. That we know of and can prove. I found the thing actually funny, it was so amateurish. A great number of people outside of the rank partisans do not look at republicans this way. This is nothing new for CNN, can you say Tailwind, Peter Arnett? This just provides more ammunition to discredit and debunk CNN on every turn. Anything they say on any matter must always be called into question, with the ending tag line "who really are their sources?"

The lawyer/trial analogy is a good one. The debate apparently wasn't designed to elicit information useful to Republican voters who want to make up their minds about picking a nominee--as one CNN executive pretended it would be. In reality, it played out like a preliminary hearing or a deposition, where the dems get a chance to get the R candidates on tape in order to impeach the nominee with his reaction to useless curveball questions in the general election. Which I think is exactly what CNN wanted. Posted by: See-Dubya at November 29, 2007 08:42 PM (CLmpi) Posted by: alexthechick at November 29, 2007 08:42 PM (/HXpk) 34
My fantasy "Coverdell Moment" on the Stupid Confederate Flag Non-Issue would go something like this: Republican Candidate with Balls (I told you this was a fantasy - humor me, here): "Lincoln was a Republican. The Army of the Potomac was Republican. The Slaves were freed exclusively by Republicans. Why don't you ask that question of Hillary, whose party is the direct descendent of Jefferson Davis, George Wallace, and the founders of the KKK, an organization that includes a current Democrat Senator, Robert Byrd? Fuck you. Next question, please." In my less lucid moments, I imagine Coverdell Moments on all sorts of issues, like Taxes, Immigration, Social Security, and Foreign Policy, all moments that end, of course, with "Fuck You. Next question, please." Ahh, a boy can dream, can't he? Posted by: Sharkman at November 29, 2007 08:44 PM (UioS4) 35

Why is it an issue that two of the leading GOP candidates are expected to answer, but none of the leading Democrats? I mean, they weren't asking some single-digit non-contender about the flag, they asked Romney and Thompson. If Gabriel doesn't see the inherent wrong here . . . I don't know. With a few days remaining in the Presidential campaign of 1992, GHW Bush appeared on Larry King Live. The format was a live phone -in event with callers selected at random. President Bush was fielding questions from all over the U.S. and at least one from Europe. King clicked on the next questioner and lo and behold it was George Stephanopolous, who then proceeded to grill the President at length. Bush expressed his astonishment to King that Stephanopolous had gotten through and King just shrugged his shoulders. I was watching it and at the time and thought, "You've got to hand it to the Clinton war room. They must have 30 guys speed dialing to get through." Sometime after the election it was quietly divulged that Stephanopolous had dialed the direct line to CNN and the staff bypassed the random lines to usher him directly through to the President. This stuff has been going on too long. The Republicans need to debate on Fox and when questioned reply in the most obsequious manner, "It's because they have twice the viewership."

Sometimes being provocative can be interesting, even challenging. This was not one of theose times. Malor was basically calling us idiots for caring about being fucked over by the Clinton News Network. Well fuck them, and fuck him. CNN, and its founder Ted Turner, have consistently been on the side of anti-American forces around the world for the last 20 years - ever watched CNN International? It makes Al Jazeera look pro-US. Tailwind, Baby Milk Factory, War-whore Christian Amanpout canoodling with Arab dictators, Eason Jordan - you name it. How about how they would only hire cranks like Robert Novak as the voice of "the right"? This is an awesome moment to publicly humiliate CNN and the Democrats for the lying scum that they are and Malor wants to give them a pass? Do you like getting corn-holed in the political shower? Ace said, Romney got caught in from of the MORAL AUTHORAH McCain truck,
for example. It was basically a crap shoot which Republican candidate
would get the question that might ruin their campaign. They were so
obviously more concerned with ratings and getting supposedly
funny/interesting questions shown than actually holding a debate.

I would love to know when the first meetings were held between CNN's little executive branch and either Hillary's pr department or a proxy for that toad. If they can meet with Saddam and not give a shit, why not meet with the DNC to rig an election.
The liberal fucks decided a long time ago to bring all the debates to friendly territory and get away from FOX. Wolf was programmed a long time ago. the media bias has just progressed to the point where it is right there and we have douches saying it's no big fucking deal. It's unmasked and upfront and no big deal. This past year has been incredible in terms of the liberal fucks in the media unmasking themselves. And we're supposed to not be pissed about it. Bullshit. There's no paranoia here, there are only liberal cocksuckers yet again trying to steal an election. Jack-- Nice post, but it would have been better if it had been a Malor-style three-part series, explaining basic concepts and written in the kind of scintillating prose usually seen in tax forms. Posted by: Hondo at November 29, 2007 10:08 PM (DTfVA) 78
I feel like I just took a wrong turn into the twilight zone. For a moment I thought was at HuffPo. Malor is wrong. Full of crap. He assumes an intelligent audience, and that's at least half wrong. CNN setting up softballs for Democrats and chin music for Republicans is despicable, but not totally unexpected. CNN winnowed 5000 entries down to a few Democratic operatives entirely by chance? Bullshit.

I would really like to see some leadership from the Republicans. None of this "we will just bend over and take it with a smile, and maybe people will like us" crap. I am supposed to vote for people like this? Suggestion: All Republican candidates should schedule a debate with CNN at a specified date, time, and place. Then at that same time and date do the debate on Fox. Screw CNN big time. Posted by: Harry at November 29, 2007 10:10 PM (6VPHl) 80
I don't come here for fucking "balance". I come here to hear the rantings of the rare sane people who, like me, are surrounded by real morons that actually are full of shit, and not only that, dangerous. If I want balance I can get all of it I want shoved down my throat all day on the MSM, at the office, 57,000 places on the intertubes, and even in my own fucking house. The kind of balance that says "We are sorry you are such a delusioned redneck asswipe, and we pity you have to suffer in lonliness among your moral superiors". The whole fucking world reeks of it. I don't need to come here for it. Do I have issues? FY, NQ... the end

The attitude of some of my fellow Republicans seems to be "Hey, we know the MSM is biased, stop bitching about it." This is shortsighted. We aren't bitching, we're taking the opportunity - yet again - to hammer the media. We must never let them off the hook. EVER. The MSM continues to lose power and influence as their ratings/circulation declines. We in the righty blogosphere, along with Talk Radio, are partly responsible for that. Unfortunately, there are still tens of millions of Americans who still trust CNN and the MSM in general. We must continue to reach these people, or at least try. Slowly but surely, we're chipping away at the power of the MSM, and in doing so, we are strengthening our democracy. During the CBS MemoGate scandal, we weren't bitching. We grasped a golden opportunity to strike a grievous blow at Dan Rather and co. Should we have listened to the likes of Gabe and let them off the hook? Once again, we should expose EVERY instance of MSM bias. We should shout it from the rooftops as loud as possible. Don't give the bastards an inch. Sharkman for POTUS. Brings a tear to my eye, it does. Republican Candidate with Balls (I told you this was a fantasy - humor me, here): "Lincoln was a Republican. The Army of the Potomac was Republican. The Slaves were freed exclusively by Republicans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGFPLWj-0pI I'd also like to know if it was ok, and just a little funny, for CNN to include a nasty caricature of Cheney last night. I liked Gabe's post and this one, too.
I think both are correct in some ways. Gabe is saying, hey, tough questions are good, competition is good. Let's seem some fireworks! Larry King softballs are bad, and won't help us decide who should run - its a seriously undecided field, no? Plus I think he'd agree the Dems need to face these as well. OTOH, I get the whole MSM game of persuasion and the plants trying to frame the GOP as drolling idiots. Remember the MSM story where the only anti-illegal immigration voice happened to be a man with missing front teeth? The confederate flag issue is a bit lame. Posted by: Aaron at November 29, 2007 10:32 PM (HmvOv) 89
Classic dem overreaching. The gay "general?" The American people really don't give a rat's ass about gays in the military. There are plenty of gays in the military, and if they keep their hands to themselves nobody gives a damn. Definitely expose this idiocy that CNN tried to pull, but outrage? I think the proper response is ridicule, kind of like Rush and Harry Reid. Ridicule is much more effective. Posted by: funky chicken at November 29, 2007 10:33 PM (I+jPP) 90
Also, the more the public finds out about these antics, where Dems get control of all debate questions, the more likely some people will start to question the media.
And the sooner we get seriously tough questions pitched at Dems... Posted by: Aaron at November 29, 2007 10:34 PM (HmvOv) Posted by: sinistar at November 29, 2007 10:36 PM (VZv6D) 92
I still say the MSM/democrat party desperately want the GOP primary voters to be stupid enough to nominate Huckabee, and they are trying their damndest to make that happen. I've been optimistic that the GOP wouldn't repeat the mistake and nominate the guy who gets the most Dobsonite nominations instead of the guy who understands and supports the constitution (NO, not RuPaul). I honestly thought the GOP was less controlled by the obsessed anti-abortion and anti-gay fringe than the dems are controlled by the anti-American fringe. I suppose the primary will tell us.

First, Gabe should be ashamed of being so obtuse. I wish his future clients the very best of luck. Second, can it be any clearer that this debate was in fact a political hit? Anyone with an open mind and at least as much common sense as a dog can see that the Dems are using Youtube, CNN, and the rest of the MSM as a weapon against the GOP. Nine questions. Dems asking them. Republican debate. OK, kids, you may now pick up your No. 2 pencils and begin.

A Hillary! queer military guy sobbing about something that the vast majority of Americans don't care about? Because, God knows, Hillary! knows what's best for the military, right? snort And CNN had the guy on in 2003? Transcripts available on their own site, and they didn't figure it out? Yeah, it's far less amusing since none of the candidates seemed to have the balls to ridicule the questions themselves, but still....funny. And how many people even watched the stupid debate anyway? Use CNN's obvious mistakes to make people laugh at them. That will catch on around the company water cooler better than ranting and raving. General Gayboy was at the wrong debate. It was Hillary's husband - BJ - who enacted 'don't ask, don't tell.' Irony can be pretty ironic at times. Michelle Malkin was on the Glenn Beck show today. The lovely Michelle says she doesn't believe there was a grand conspiracy at CNN, just a couple of rogue producers. Anderson Cooper was innocent, she says. Why give these people any benefit of the doubt? This is the same CNN that was the only western media outfit that had an office at Saddam's ministry of information, thanks to a deal they struck with Saddam. As you all know, CNN agreed not to report the regime's multiple atrocities. Another kind of 'don't ask, don't tell' arrangement. Posted by: Michael Laurence at November 29, 2007 11:16 PM (M0QEs) 103
Gabe takes his ques from CNN's political director “It’s interesting to see our critics really focusing on the questioners, but not really focusing on the questions. You haven’t heard them say that these were not useful questions.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1107/7099.html only a moron (not said in jest) would conclude it's just dandy for a Republican debate to be subverted by democrat shills and the media. I sincerely do not give a fuck about gays in military, confederate flags, abortion, religion, or who the fuck blacks want to vote for. I want jihadis to fry, a humming economy, and low taxes. Its fun to see what people were saying before the youtube debates. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jack-muse/gop-youtube-debate-not-de_b_58367.html JackM bashes Romney for what was an accurate answer no matter how much JackM ignores the reality. He leaves out the fact that Romney was the candidate who had the foresight to say we should not participate in this juvenille farce but admittedly caved in to the political strategists. Michelle Malkin was a proponent and anticipated that the left and various moonbats would be participants in the questioning. Now she's pulling the Casa Blanca "I'm shocked" routine. I only wish Romney would have followed his instincts.

Polynikes, It is interesting to see what others were saying ahead of the event. I don't think I ever commented on it pro or con. Personally, I don't like the "youTube" contrivance and, like you, wish Romney had stuck to his instincts and avoided it. But he didn't. Instead he compounded his error with his response as I said.

CNN doesn't really give a crap what we think since they know that there won't be any consequences for their behavior. They have gotten away with these antics for years. They managed to make the Repub candidates look like fools and discredited "new media/the blogosphere" at the same time. Just like my hometown newspaper, they are anxious and happy to make the internet look like an asylum-even FOX News which trolls the blogs regularly for news absolutely never attribute their information.

Jack M. I understand your aggravation. It just my opinion that sadly we have long lost our arguments on the confederate flag and it is now mostly seen as a symbol of racism. I say this as one who hung the flag in my college room as a tribute to the ideals of Robert E. Lee. In anyevent, this was not the first time this question was raised at a debate. It was asked during the Fox debate and presented by a viewer. MR. HUME: We'll -- Wendell, go ahead. MR. GOLER: I think I want to turn to Senator McCain and change the subject, if I will. (Laughter.) I don't think we're going to solve this tonight, gentlemen. An Internet question for you, Senator. Royce from Philadelphia asks if South Carolina should be free to fly the Confederate flag from state buildings. (Groans from the audience.) SEN. MCCAIN: That's -- MR. GOLER: In 2000, sir, you said yes. You have since called that one of your worst examples of political cowardice. That flag is still flying in front of the Statehouse. Should it come down? SEN. MCCAIN: It is not flying on top of capitol. It is flying at the -- MR. GOLER: It is flying in front of the Statehouse, sir. SEN. MCCAIN: It is not flying on top of the capitol. Yes, I was wrong when I didn't say it -- well, when I said that I believed that it was up to the state of South Carolina. That was a wrong statement on my part. Now, after long negotiation amongst most parties, there is an agreement that that flag no longer flies on top of the capitol of the state of South Carolina. Almost all parties involved in those negotiations believe that that's a reasonable solution to this issue. I support it. I still believe that it should not have flown over the capitol, and I was wrong when I said that it was a state issue. But now I think it has been settled, and I think it's time that we all moved on on this issue -- especially the people of South Carolina. (Applause.) Have I said lately that I love you guys? (and you too Rosetta). Gabe's mix of ignorance and condescension just bothers me. I'm a little depressed I couldn't comment on his post, but why bother? He's been eviscerated and done his usual disappearing act when shown to be wrong. As for Cooper, well, nearly all of today's "journalists" are some mix of lazy, stupid, ignorant and biased, Cooper shows he has a huge streak of willful ignorance. He would have had to actively avert his eyes to not spot this. There's a reason CNN is going down the tubes. The only reason they aren't as low as MSNBC is because of the residual respect they have as the first cable news network back before the Internet when it wasn't as easy for people to realize that others felt the same way and to easily find out where they were full of crap. The NYTimesWashPostCNNABCCBSNBCetc. are really pissed off that we idiots aren't voting the way they want so they just keep getting worse and worse because we're too stupid to understand how we should be voting.
