Huckabee: An Evangelical Perspective

According to the story posted at Hot Air, and linked earlier by Ace, Mike Huckabee is getting 48% of the evangelical vote in Iowa. As an evangelical, I find that somewhat disheartening, given Huckabee's dismal record on fiscal issues.

Now, I know Huckabee has dismissed The Club for Growth's analysis, calling them "The club for greed." And his supporters will defend him by pointing to his conservative views on abortion and gay rights, which have seemingly become the predominant issues by which evangelical voters choose their candidates. I wouldn't normally do this, but I know I'm going to get accused of elitism against evangelical voters, so here are my evangelical bona fides:

I've been a Christian since I was 15 years old. That's 20 years. I attend a church that is fundamental in doctrine, but not in culture. I've been on two missions trips - one stateside and one in Russia, and I tithe. I don't say any of this to brag or puff myself up, but when I've blogged on this or commented on Huckabee in other venues, I have been accused of being somehow biased against evangelicals or of not understanding evangelical beliefs. Trust me, I do. I'm not a perfect person, but I am committed to my faith.

I do not believe Mike Huckabee is a good candidate for president. This is not a statement against his faith - on theological matters, I'm sure we'd agree on quite a bit. However, I would have a very hard time voting for him in the general election.

There are three major areas in which I disagree with Huckabee. I do not like his fiscal record, do not agree with his view of government power and disagree with his political temperament. This could be long, so more below:

Fiscal Record

When Mike Huckabee entered office, the state tax burden in Arkansas was 10.1%. When he left, it was 11.3%. Remember, God only asks for 10%. That may not seem like a terribly high jump, but when you add in the federal tax burden, and then consider that the state's average household income is only about $35,000, it's clear that Huckabee's policies made it harder for families to get ahead.

People work to fund their families and lifestyles, not their government. When governments excessively tax income, it leads to less money in the pockets of people who are trying to pay the bills and raise a family. Excessive taxation leads to greater numbers of families in which both parents work, and lowers the standard of living for families. When both parents are forced to work, it leads to less time spent with each other and with children.

Huckabee may get a chuckle with his "club for greed" comments, but excessive tax policies have real, damaging effects to families. It may be a fiscally conservative issue, but it has social implications.

Huckabee claims that one of his tax hikes was forced upon him by the court. This misstates the issue. Huckabee and the state government were not given a mandate to tax, they were given a mandate to fund. Huckabee and the legislature could have found the money elsewhere in the budget, but instead took the easy way out and created a tax.

Here in Maine, the state government was given a similar mandate by a voter referendum - voters demanded the state pick up a greater portion of school funding. Our Democratic governor responded by finding the money elsewhere in the budget. He could have imposed a new tax to generate revenue, but he did not.

Huckabee could have made a similar choice, and did not.

View of Government Power

One of Huckabee's strengths as a candidate are his socially conservative views on abortion and gay rights. However, his proposals to deal with those issues are of the big-government variety. The FMA and the Human Life Amendment would each amend the constitution to mandate a particular social view on the rest of the country.

Somehow, I doubt that was the intent of the amendment process to the Constitution. I prefer the federalist approach, as it gives power to the states. Huckabee disagrees, saying that morality shouldn't differ from state to state, so a federal approach is needed. In other words, he has transformed his moral absolutism into political absolutism, and disagreeing states be darned. The government is not run by philosophy based on personal morality. It's a government of laws, not men. People he disagrees with have their own sense of morality...does Huckabee want to run the government based on their views?

I hate abortion. Always have. I would like to see it illegal. However, I would rather see time and effort go to overturning Roe v. Wade and fighting this battle locally than fight what is sure to be a losing battle federally. If Roe v. Wade were overturned, some states would end abortion others would not. Sure, that's only a partial victory, but it's still a victory that leads to fewer abortions overall, and that's a good thing.

Huckabee has also proposed a nationwide ban on workplace smoking. His views on these issues show that when it comes down to it, Huckabee sees no problem using the power of the presidency or the amendment process of the Constitution to create laws that impose a particular viewpoint on the entire country. Federalism exists for a reason - and as much as we may not like a particular practice, I think abandoning federalism is more damaging.

Making laws to 'solve' social issues will only work as long as evangelicals have the power to make those laws. Passage of the FMA or the HLA will set a precedent - social issues can and should be resolved through Constitutional amendment. It won't always be evangelicals that have the power to suggest or make such laws. Is this a precedent we want to set?

Political Temperament

When governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee lost a political battle. This was his reaction:

Gov. Mike Huckabee Thursday denounced a bill by Sen. Jim Holt that would deny state benefits to illegal immigrants as un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life.
I find that bothersome.

Consider what he did there: Huckabee made agreement with him on a particular policy a litmus test for what constitutes a good or a bad Christian. This offends me because my faith is more than a set of political yardsticks or a way to institute "social justice."

Faith should not be a bludgeon used to beat your political opponents into silence. Huckabee's willingness to use it as such is disturbing. Disagreement does not equal heresy - accusing those who disagree with us of being less devoted to Christ is wrong. Simply wrong. Political issues are not theological ones.

This is an important point. Jesus told us to take care of the poor, not the government. Christians are not called to save the culture, but to point people in a culture to Christ. Our call is not political. This doesn't mean we should stay out of politics entirely, but I believe it does mean that we shouldn't allow politics to obscure the most important mission we've been given - to tell people about Christ. (Bet you never thought you'd see those words at this blog, huh?)

Huckabee's words give me pause as to his temperament. His fiscal record is troubling, and his views on government power have the potential to set bad precedent for dealing with social issues. That's why I can't support Mike Huckabee, even if I would gladly worship with him.

Damn, the Huckabee posts are coming so fast, I'm getting lost in the shuffle.

Huckabee is a tool for Giuliani to win back the social cons. They're both sleazy, they're both open borders types.

I wonder how Ace is going to feel about Giuliani after Huckabee joins his ticket.

I think Huckabee's about to be buried so hard on fiscal and immigration issues that he's not going anywhere near anyone's ticket, in spite of what the secular establishment beltway types think.

If he ISN'T then it's a bad sign for the Conservative coalition, because it means a large portion of the base is ripe for European-type Christan Democrat wannabes. AKA Big government-socially conservative. Bush selling government as a solution to social problems wasn't a good precedent in this regard.

4 Great read, slublog. Interesting, analytical, well thought out. And ... I happen to agree. You mentioned things I did not know about Huckabee, even though my buddies in state frequently mentioned they were unhappy with his policy decisions though in relative agreement with most social issues.

I had planned to retire to AR to be with a few Marine and cop buddies until I found that my police pension - not taxed in NY - would be taxed in AR. That being my only source of income - I could not justify this raid on my pocket. I will be going to northeast Texas instead. Tax free state, yet still close to buddies in AR.

Great post Slu.

But those who back Rudy for the nomination?  Going straight to Hell.

There's a lot of talk about how Huckster's numbers will tank as more are familiar with his dismal record; I wish I could believe that, but my confidence in the electorate is such that I don't.

They've already demonstrated that they're willing to overlook Rudy's liberal stance on abortion, guns, immigration and his other faults both personal and public.  They've overlooked Romney's opportunistic flip-flops and pandering.  Why wouldn't they also be willing to overlook Huckster's fiscal record, immigration stance and nanny statism?

I'd like to see Huck tank and see his current support shift to Fred, but I'm not that optimistic- it seems that style rules substance with the masses, and Huck seems like such a gosh darn nice guy.  Hell, if he had Mitt's hair he'd probably have it sewn up by now.

As aldolfo pointed out, Huckabee's and Rudy's sucking up to each other while misstating Romney's record as governor makes me for the first time, hesitant to vote for Rudy if he is the nominee. I still will but all of Rudy's negatives, both political and personal, have shot to the forefront for me, where before, I considered them just part of Rudy being a New Yorker and doing business in NYC.  I see him in a different light now and its casting a bad shadow.

That's because enough people have been running interference for Guiliani that there's enough doubt for people who think only he can win to support him.

I can't see as many people doing the same for Huckabee.

Same for Romney, who also has support in the establishment and conservative press.

Huckabee doesn't, so far as I can tell. He's come out of the background, not many people already set to carry his water.

10 "...my confidence in the electorate is such that I don't."

A good portion of the electorate is stupifyingly stupid. Their reading is limited to newspapers and fluff mags, their knowledge of politics is limited to television "news" programs and celebrity talk shows, and their grasp of reality in general is tenuous at best. How else can one explain the attraction to mongrels like the Kennedy's, Clinton's, Kerry's, etc? A one term Senator whose political experience is limited to "marriage" to a former President is somehow qualified to herself be President? A B. Hussein Obama is somehow qualified to be President. Based upon WHAT experience?

I have NO confidence in the electorate.

13 Adding Huck to Rudy, which seems to be the plan, pushes the ticket even further left of Hillary. (Rudy's already there.)

She's winning anyway, so it doesn't matter, but forget her stupid witch-face for a second, and notice that her positions are basically Lieberman's: social lib, social con with a couple exceptions that are mistaken for the whole because she emphasizes them to the D base (you're falling for her spin, in other words), proven readiness to bomb everybody, with bonus domestic authoritarian madness. Her actual, non-rhetorical position on the war is the same as Rudy's, and her record is better: she voted for it. He talked shit and got his city bombed a couple times "on his watch." And they're equally corrupt and shitty people.

I've thought so for a while, but the Huck-love seals it: Hillary's too conservative for the Republican nomination.

Nice party you got there.

Here's my $0.02:  no matter who's president, abortion rights and gay rights are going to tread water or go somewhat more left-y in the next 4-8 years.  However, fiscal and judicial conservatism have quite a good chance.  So, vote for the person who has your views on those, and pray for a miracle otherwise.

Hey!  There's plenty of us in "cornland" who are supporting viable candidates (I'm a Fred! man myself).  It's just that the Huckabee supporters like to hear themselves talk, and are monopolizing the airwaves right now.  Huckabee's a likeable sort, unless you stand in his way politically & get called "un-Christian", and that'll get him some votes in Iowa; however, saner minds will prevail on caucus night.  Huck will finish in the Top 4, but it won't give him enough of a bounce going into the rest of the season to make up for his financial situation.

Plus, the afternoon drive guy on Iowa's biggest AM talk station (WHO 1040 in Des Moines) has totally been sucking Huckabee's joint since July.  He basically reads Huck's campaign talking points every day on the air, while jabbing at all the other candidates - he's declared that Romney's the biggest whore in the race (other than John Edwards), and he's also said that "Giuliani & Clinton are basically the same person - you'd might as well vote for Hillary & get the "real thing" instead of Hillary Lite".  Now, don't get me wrong, I've got issues with Rudy & Mitt, but I'd hardly consider them to be "worse than voting Democratic".

29 I appreciate Slublog's comments here and respect his decision. I believe that one can be a Christian and come to different conclusions on political issues (some issues are a little more solid) and on political candidates (Jesus ain't running for the nomination).

I'm still trying to make up my mind as an evangelical voter, who is both a social and fiscal conservative. Huckabee's still on the table for me, so's Mitt, Fred, maybe even McCain, though I'm still not quite sure about His Maverickiness. Rudy's a tougher issue to decide - for a host of reasons (social issues, gun control, immigration, etc. I don't see him as the best GOP candidate on any issue - that's not to say he's the worst candidate *cough*Ron Paul*cough*)

I do want to interject this though. A prominent evangelical blogger, Joe Carter, works at the Family Research Center. He started Blogs for Fred and publically supported him and blogged for him, until recently. He has now switched to Huckabee, so much so that he has taken a leave of absence from the FRC to work for Huckabee's campaign.

He's not one who just jumped on Huckabee because he was an evangelical or was against abortion. We was swayed away from the artist formerly known as Fred! (now just Fred.) to Huckabee because of his stance on the issues.

Just as balance, here's his takedown of the NRO editorial and Club for Growth's talking points, along with his endorsement of Huckabee.

I think Republicans (and evangelicals) are getting into dangerous ground here by saying this and that candidate is "unelectable" or so dreadful you would never vote for them. I have no idea how all this will turn out, I'm not going to box myself into any corner based on opposition research and sound bites. Let's be careful that our cheerleading for a certain candidate does not turn into ripping another GOP candidate to shreds and see that come around and bite us in the general election.

Do we cast votes based on principal or electability?

Ace - I didn't like all the vows of some in the party to not vote at all, or vote third-party, if a candidate they didn't like was nominated. I would make that same threat now in response to Huckabee's emergence.[snip] heh

31 I think the best thing that Rudy could possibly do is to take Fred as his Veep. He has the southern thing, the gravitas thing, and some conservative bonafides to give warm-and-fuzzies to the folks who are freaked about Rudy. Fred probably doesn't have the juice to get the nomination, but he'd be a great VP.

So glad to see this post and I pray there are lots of evangelicals who feel the same way, because I keep running into the ones who don't seem to give a damn about any issue but abortion.

Can't go with Rudy because of his 2nd amendment stance.

The thing about Rudy is -his personal beliefs aside- when he makes a clear public promise about something he will/won't do, he sticks to his word. At least, that's been his history. If he says he'll appoint strict constitutionists to the bench, he means it. I may have concerns about his immigration stand, but I believe our guns would be safe under Rudy.

PS - Ain't no way Ruy picks Huckabee to run as his veep. No way.

36 ...it seems like Joe Carter's rebut of NRO's article is more like an out of context attack on Mitt Romney.

His logic behind it, again I'm not in any one's camp right now (I think they are all flawed candidates), is that NRO is a Pro-Romney site. So all of the things they bring up against Huckabee can be turned back against their own candidate.

His argument is that NRO sees all of these flaws in Huckabee, but refuses to see them in Mitt.

Just remember, we are usually right when we nominate our candidates in the Straw Poll (occurs in the previous year than the election, this summer of this year), and Mitt won it this year.  Huckabee did well in that, but he didn't win.  Much as I see the caucus turning out for him, I don't think he'll win it.

And Russ is very right.  WHO is tooting the horn for the Huckster really loud right now, and you know what they say about the squeaky wheel.  Doesn't mean all of us "idiots in the cornfield" are going to lose our minds when we caucus.  Mitt spent the money here, and that's where my money is getting bet.  Although my support lies with Fred! too.  I just don't see him pulling it off.

Go figure.

Huckabee is straight up on social issues.  Though I wonder about his tax record, I imagine that much of the hysterics are overblown by people who have invested money in the former frontrunners.  And, I have to say, if you've ever been to Arkansas, one can't help but reflect on Reagan's own defense of the "truly needy."  They do exist, and sometimes states need money to help these people (though, private citizens are the ones who have the moral obligation to feed, clothe, and shelter to help out of their own free will).

2). Rudy has crapped it up with the guns, immigration and abortion.

3).Rommney has been to opportunistic and lawyerly with his answers.

4). Ron Paul is a nut sack.

5). The Fred! is now just Fred and in danger of being fred because he can seem to bring the heat.

6). McCain has a record with a big "McCain/Feingold" and a "We'll build a damn fence" on it.

47 Though I wonder about his tax record, I imagine that much of the hysterics are overblown by people who have invested money in the former frontrunners.

I haven't paid a dime to a single candidate.  Huckabee's tax record speaks for itself.

I have been to Arkansas a number of times.  It is a poor state, and I agree that private citizens (and I would add the church) have the responsibility for the poor.  However, when the government takes 20-30% of your income through various levels of taxation, it gets hard to pay your own bills, much less have enough left for charity.

Huckabee's riding a wave right now, but it's too early to say that he's going to finish strong.  Romney's early presence in Iowa tied up a lot of activists who won't want to jump to another candidate because then they'll have to admit they were wrong in the first place.  He's got the whole "I'm a CEO" thing going for him, which is OK, but is the president REALLY equivalent to a business CEO?

Fred's had a rocky patch, but if he can keep his head up & keep putting out the best position statements on the GOP side, his support will increase.  Right now, the media "he's lazy/waited too long/too old" spin is hurting him somewhat.  He's going to have to kick it into gear to make a run, but I think he'll pick up more support as we get closer to caucus time.

I admire Huckabee's Christianity, but like Slu, I can't vote for the man.  He's got way too many positions where he's just talking out of his ass.

The Flat Tax?  Greeeeeeat idea.  We'll have a whole 4 years of tilting at windmills from our executive branch - or worse yet, we'll have a Flat Tax AND the regular progressive taxation we've already got.  Huck's current position on economic issues is to the left of GWB, and everyone knows how THAT'S worked out so far.

Constitutional amendments regulating abortion?  OK, but does anyone remember the ERA?  If not, go back & re-read the constitution on the amendment process.  Even if President Huck could get it passed, he's still got to count on the States to run with the ball, and there's a finite time available to pass it before it becomes invalid, sort of like the ERA did.  I think Thompson's "federalist" stance makes much more sense here:  Overturn Roe v. Wade & let the fight happen at the state level.  "Red" States will ban or heavily regulate abortion quickly, and conservatives can incrementally work their way through "Blue" states to push the issue on a more friendly level than Washington DC.  Getting the Feds out of the abortion debate is probably the best thing anyone could do to forward the Pro-Life position.  Huck's abortion position is great if you're more interested in religious purity than in making serious inroads on the number of abortions performed in America, and I can see him spending quite a bit of time in the bully pulpit scolding the nation, Jimmah Carter-style, on their wickend unwillingness to follow his lead unquestioningly.

Immigration?  Huck's an open borders guy.  I can see his point from a religious standpoint, but as far as government goes this is one time when I'm glad for the wrong-headed "separation of church & state" doctrine.  If Huck wants to throw open our social welfare system & student aid system to newcomers, I'd have a lot more respect for the man if he'd say "..and when the bill comes due on this issue, send it to MY denomination".  There's a lot that can be done for immigrants, illegal & legal, but I'd rather not have MY federal government in the business of handing out goodies to illegals.

Foreign policy?  I can't tell where Huck's at.  I've heard him say that we should partition Iraq, which is a complete dumbass idea:  If things are going so badly for America right now, how will having our troops enforcing a partition plan work out better?  That just makes us bigger targets for the disaffected.  He's also on record as saying that we should TALK to Iran instead of threatening them with military action if they don't stop enriching uranium.  Hey Governor Huckabee; Neville Chamberlain's on the line, and he wants to know why you're not giving him credit for his peace plan.

Second Amendment issues?  Any candidate who would ban smoking has got to have thoughts in the back of his head about how to "reasonably regulate" gun ownership, and that dog just won't hunt.  I don't mind "reasonable" regulations on gun ownership, but I DO mind when what's "reasonable" is decided by a Nanny-Stater like Huck.

And last, but not least, a Nanny-Stater like Huck will eventually get around to regulating bacon.  BACON!  Well, Sir, I can assure you that you can take away my life, but you can NEVER take away my BACON!

(Seriously, he can't do it.  I can get the bacon myself from my brother-in-law's hoglot.  The rest of you non-farm morons?  Shit out of luck.)

And lastly.......

Gabe, what have you ever read in my writings that makes you think that I give a flying fuck about what "Mr. International Law" thinks of my choice of Presidential Candidates?

Slublog, excellent! I mean it. I haven't even read any of the comments yet, because I wanted to rush down here to the bottom and say you did a wonderful job on the presentation of your position on Governor Huckabee. I concur.

Just wow!

Slu, thanks for the thoughts.  Great post, but one quibble:

I thought the FMA was an attempt to prevent the federal constitution from providing an endrun around all the state constitutions.  Once CaliMass legally redefines marriage, all the other states will be sued at the federal level to recognize the new marriagePlus, and the FMA would attempt to disallow those tactics.

Am I mistaken about the FMA, or miss a memo that changed the basic idea of the FMA?  If not, I would think the FMA would underline federalism, rather than dilute it.

Won't work, though.  All the SCOTUS has to do is rule the FMA unconstitutional and rule marriagePlus the new law of the land, just as they did with abortion.

I was turned off of Huckabee when I heard he wanted to send everyone to college on the taxpayer's dime.  Conservative?  They keep using that word.  I do not think it means what they think it means.

51 I'm embarrassed that I did that long comment & didn't bother to tell Slublog that he hit this one out of the park.  Excellent work.

You're kinda-sorta right, but I think maybe you're confusing DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act, signed by Clinton) with the proposed FMA (Federal Marriage Amendment).

What DOMA did was [A] to affirm that the "full faith and credit act" of the Constitution does not oblige any individual state to recognize a same-sex marriage even if other state(s) choose to recognize such marriages within their borders; and [B] to affirm that the federal government would not recognize same-sex marriages even if individual states wish to do so.

DOMA is theoretically vulnerable to being reviewed and overturned on Constitutional grounds by SCOTUS, so the proposed FMA, if ratified, would write the two provisions of DOMA into the Constitution and thereby make them SCOTUS-proof. (SCOTUS does not have the power to declare Constitutional amendments unconstitutional.)

One thing to note is that neither DOMA nor FMA amounts to a "ban on gay marriage" -- even if FMA were ratified and thus became part of the U.S. Constitution, churches in all 50 states would be free to perform marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples, and each state would be totally free to pass laws giving state-level marital benefits to same-sex couples who are state residents.

54 "Rudy has crapped it up with the guns, immigration and abortion."

This is one thing I don't get, the abortion thing with Rudy. Guns and immigration I get, he can influence those, and so far he hasn't done great there (of course, he's finally making some pro-gun statements, but your mileage with those may vary). But abortion? The only thing a President can do regarding abortion is appoint judges who might overturn Roe v Wade. Most conservatives assume that constructionist judges will do exactly that. Rudy has pledged to nominate constructionist judges if elected. So what's the problem? Why should anyone give a rat's ass whether he personally believes it's wrong or not? He's pledged to help achieve your goal as much as he can regardless.

Thanks, Throbert

My brain shorted out while adding the unconstitutional bit in my comment.  You're right, SCOTUS shouldn't be able to overrule a constitutional amendment.

But it looks like I'm right about DOMA/FMA not mandating a particular definition of marriage on the country, any more than a repeal of Roe v Wade would force individual states to outlaw abortion.  In effect, it embraces federalism by leaving the matter for state law to decide.

So was that a slip, or am I missing your point, Slu?  Sorry for being a pedantic old fart, but it's not like I'm taking up *my* server space with needless bickering.

Posted by: Cautiously Pessimistic at November 29, 2007 12:39 AM (O52Pw)

57 Actually I think Thorbert's being optimistic. Given half a chance the SCOTUS would love to rule the Constitution unconstitutional.

I mean it doesnt even grant them the power to rule laws unconstitutional but that hasnt stopped them yet.

What exactly is so wrong with Duncan Hunter that Rudy wouldn't pick him for veep?

The main factor in choosing a VP is how well they'd improve your election chances.  No matter how good he is on most issues, a VP candidate with 1% support doesn't go very far in improving one's electabilty.

Rudy's picking Hunter for Veep (assuming he is in fact the nominee) would go a long way toward assuring us that he isn't another wretched RINO, especially on the immigration issue. In that sense, Duncan Hunter as Veep goes a LONG way to improving Rudy's electability, 1& notwithstanding.

Rudy the RINO is already "reaching out" to the great undecided. Picking Hunter as a Veep shores up the disaffected base.

59 So was that a slip, or am I missing your point, Slu?  Sorry for being a pedantic old fart, but it's not like I'm taking up *my* server space with needless bickering.

My understanding of the federal marriage amendment, as proposed by groups like the Family Research Council, would specifically define marriage as being between a man and a woman, leaving no room for the states to make laws that say otherwise.

60 slu,

I wasn't suggesting that you had given money to support other candidates.  I just think that the MSM has a great time trashing Huckabee because they have already decided that we will be choosing between Romney and Giuliani.  All their efforts have gone there.  All the corporate money has gone there.  Who the hell are the American people to question their script!?!?

To pick someone they didn't bless is unacceptable.

So, you can expect a lot of people going over Huckabee's record with a fine toothed comb and leaving the fiscal flaws of Rudy (who raided the public coffers to fund trips to see his mistress) and Mitt (who pushed socialized medicine) underscrutinized.

I'm not saying that Huckabee's flaws aren't there.  I'm just saying that the spotlight is on him in this regard because he violates the MSM script.  He's got an uphill battle, because he wasn't even considered to be part of the contest from the beginning.  And it doesn't help him, in the eyes of the establishment, that he's openly (gasp!) Christian.  As a result, "Huckabee is a Communist!  He's worse than Hillary!"  And so on and so forth.

61 When I think about it, is there a candidate on the Republican side who COULDN'T improve his chances by picking Hunter to be his VP? He complements everyone else on the stage, so the evantual nominee would be an idiot if Hunter's not in his list of finalists. This applies to anyone other than Duncan Hunter, of course.
