Congress' Funding Standoff Must End

Senate Majority Leader Reid has vowed to release no funding for the Iraq War this year unless the Republicans accept his retreat deadlines. That vow has put the mission and our troops in danger.

Last week, I wrote about Secretary Gates' public condemnation of Democratic efforts to force a premature withdrawal and his announcement that if Reid persists in his refusal to support our troops in the field, Gates would have to lay off up to 200,000 people and begin closing stateside facilities in order to pay for the war.

Now, Defense Link reports that the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization will have to curtail operations for lack of funding starting on December 1st.

The anti-IED organization needs the funding to sustain operations and to pay for equipment fielded but not yet turned over to the services for funding, Meigs said. For example, he said, his organization funds the Guardian man-portable jammer, the contractors to service it, and the training in the system.
The organization tests new projects, ideas, ways of doing business and equipment against IEDs. If they prove effective, the organization is nimble enough to quickly can get the equipment to the hands of servicemembers. Meigs said the organization has enough money “to keep the lights on” through April. The organization is funded via supplemental spending bills.

Attacks with IEDs have dropped since the surge began, but they are still a daily threat to our troops in Iraq. In Afghanistan, attacks with IEDs are up. JIEDDO was once derided as bringing wastefully high-tech solutions to a simple problem. But they've had some important successes including the development of the aforementioned cell-jamming platform.

It is unconscionable that our military is scrambling to find funding while we're in the midst of a war. The Democrats in Congress need to quit playing games and start supporting our troops.

Let Gates do it. He seems to have balls, which is a pleasant surprise for me. Bush is finally good against destructive behavior in congress, so I think he might actually be up for the job too. If he had gotten out front of the dumbass Trent Lott/Ted Stevens GOP led congress instead of trying to make friends with Ted fatass Kennedy he wouldn't be dealing with the dems now.

That said, I hope Reid sticks to his guns, and has been so brainwashed by the Code Pink/Moveon crowd that he believes this will do anything but create a GOP tsumani in 2008.

Go Harry, Go Harry, Go Harry! Give the man an hour on prime time from now until Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Nancy, Harry (the cheap), and the cast of usual suspects are beyond reproach, and, must be taught the ultimate lesson - defeat by avalanche. Their whole house of cards will implode, along with their fragile alliances.

I cannot believe Joe Democrat condones this, sides with this, and will allow these cretins continue. Either they've sheeple blinded by the idea of a bygone tradition, or, 'our type of victory at any price' crowd.

No matter the Rep choice (I really hope no RINO surfaces), we need to win, stop being weenies, and take back (or, put back) what this country has become. Forty years of experimenting has led us to this - their failed ideology has wasted far more than tax dollars and time.

Sorry, I think people will just interpret that as manuevering. Half-measures just imply a half-crisis. If they want the citizenry to answer the bell, they have to ring the damn thing!

The administration should make the case on simple moral grounds that the people can understand and buy into. This cleverness only allows Democrats to shift the debate to whether the cuts were really required, and away from why the Dems in the US Congress are trying to lose a war to win an election.

The Pres needs to understand that while the overseas front may be going better, we are not yet winning the war on the fifth-column at home. He and the Republicans need to take the fight to the Dems and the MSM, savage them at every opportunity, and don't let up until they are running for the exits leaving Harry and Nancy and Teddy swinging in the wind. I am tired of Democrats pulling this shit on their country and skating - I want scalps, and some ones with big names on them, so this kind of behavior finally gets unlearned!

During WWII, Lyndon Johnson was a Congressman, and chaired a subcommittee that handled Navy appropriations. He knew that once the war was over, he'd be running against returning war heroes with medals, and he didn't like the idea.

So he went on an inspection tour of the South Pacific, came back, and told the Navy "I want a Silver Star. Make something up and give it to me, or I'll start holding up your appropriations."

So the Navy gave him a Silver Star for a flight on which he was a passenger, which may or may not have come under attack. LBJ then pushed for more men and better equipment to be sent to the Navy in the Pacific, and everyone was happy.

So the only thing that's changed with Democrats since WWII is, then they sold support for the war to America, today they sell opposition to the war to anti-Americans.

This one is perfect....spends too much money for what they produce, but is in a very high profile area. Much of the civilian research can be halted for a month or two with zero harm to what's going on in the field.

doc, a serious answer to a serious question/problem. If you are in a dem district, get involved with the local (barf, i know) dem party. When a sane primary opponent for your congressman shows up, support them like crazy. They might have a prayer of winning the primary.

If you have to have a dem member of the house representing you, you can work toward making it a (relatively) sane one.
