Social Con Endorsements: Pat Robertson Endorses Giuliani: Brownback Will Endorse McCain; Paul Weyrich Endorses Romney

I suppose the Robertson endorsement is the biggest, though it comes with a lot of baggage and I doubt he has the clout he once did.

Yesterday Moral Majority co-founder Paul Weyrich endorsed Romney.

The biggest effect may not be any competitive advantage for these guys, so much as simply making them acceptable second or third choices for social cons. Though the effect will be limited; while the Washington Post thinks the religious right are "poor, uneducated, and easily led," I tend to think they make their own decisions. Still, people seek endorsements for a reason.

1 Funny that Pat Robertson endorsed the only pro-choice republican candidate.
I think this will change conservative opinions of Pat more than Rudy.

Up is down

Left is right

East is West

White is black

Extreme social con endorses the most socially liberal Republican (in name only) in the race.  Did someone declare "backwards day" or something?

The biggest effect will be to allow a whole bunch of lefties to intone, in a faux cynical manner, "The Moral Majority is neither" and pretend they're being funny or original or even saying something that means anything.

If I had a dollar everytime some lefty prof in the 80s said that, well, I would have a lot of dollars.

Posted by: Veeshir at November 07, 2007 03:01 PM (zXUuJ)

5 I think its more important that Weyrich was one of the founders of the Heritage Foundation, the preiment conservative think tank.

Mayor: What do you mean, "biblical"?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath-of-God type stuff.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.
Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling.
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria.

7 We have selected a candidate but we are not announcing who it is.

How will you know who we endorsed? Simple, he or she will be the on getting sworn in on January 20, 2009.

10 What a bunch of fakes. If they had any integrity they'd all be endorsing Duncan Hunter, Duncan Hunter, Duncan Hunter, YEA!

11 I emphatically disagree that the Robertson endorsement is the biggest.  if anything, it's neutral and an albatross in the general election.

Posted by: See-Dubya at November 07, 2007 03:37 PM (drTeV)

12 I predicted this

Posted by: nostradamus at November 07, 2007 03:40 PM (evdj2)

13 See-Dubya, you're wrong. As much as I dislike the guy, Robertson has a huge following. That's a big plus for Giuliani.

And contrary to your claim that Robertson's endorsement will be "baggage dragging Rudy down", those of us who say "Robertson, who?' aren't likely to care that he's endorsed Giuliani.

Endorsements only hurt when someone like David Duke does the endorsing and the candidate fails to repudiate it.

14

Biggest endorsement?  Did he recommend Rudy assasinate the other candidates?

Posted by: polynikes at November 07, 2007 03:48 PM (m2CN7)

15

"Robertson has a huge following"

Prove it.

No one has ever, in my entire political awareness, in my time growing up in one of the most conservative states in the country, in a conservative church, or my subsequent association and discussions with all sorts of conservatives from libertarians to neo-theocrats to black-helicopter conspiracists ever said to me, "Hey, did you hear that great idea that Pat Robertson had the other day?"*

He peaked in 1992.  The media keeps him alive by pretending he's relevant.  If Rudy gets the nomination Hillary will play that footage of him snuggling up to Robertson in key markets.

* Okay, just once, when he advocated assassinating Hugo Chavez.

16 The 700 Club claims one million daily U.S. viewers.

Posted by: Gabriel Malor at November 07, 2007 03:54 PM (/0pXT)

17 Rudy should have said thanks but no thanks.  Now he either embraces this endorsement which comes with Robertson baggage of calling for Chavez's assasination, claiming Ariel Sharon's stroke was God's retribution, predicting a terrorist strike on America in 2007 that will kill upwards of a million, hurricane and tsunami predictions, etc. etc.  OR he has to , as you say, repudiate Robertson for his outlandish predictions and statements and lose credibility by association with a large amount of evangelicals.  I guess there is a third option and that is to just stay silent on the endorsement.

Posted by: Muslihoon at November 07, 2007 04:01 PM (LR1ZU)

polynikes--exactly.  Maybe he could have accepted the endorsement graciously, but he didn't have to get up there on stage with him all chummy and give the opposition attack-ad footage.

GM--and the IAEA claimes Iran isn't building nuclear weapons.

Seriously, though--if Robertson's viewers follow him so closely, doesn't it strike anyone as strange that we never hear a peep from them?  I think this is a case of preference falsification like with illegal immigration--where everybody convinces themselves that Pat Robertson has these hordes of people hanging on his every word.

Well I says Emperor Pat Robertson isn't wearing any clothes.

I don't like Robertson at all, but his statement saying why he supports Rudy is really good and sounds quite sincere.  Somebody had it on a previous thread, and I was shocked and (do I have to admit this?) impressed.

Rudy's not my favorite candidate, BTW.

Posted by: funky chicken at November 07, 2007 04:37 PM (I+jPP)

22

there is more to giuliani than pro choice

Yeah- he's also pro illegal immigrant, pro gun control and pro liberal Democrat Mario Cuomo.  His foriegn policy rhetoric (and that's all we have from Rudy to go by) is almost no different than that from the other candidates.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at November 07, 2007 04:41 PM (rf03a)

23 This article is rife with errors.  Anyone with a brain would have endorsed Ron Paul!  Clearly, this author is a crank to think that people would believe otherwise.

They attacked his city. I have a feeling he will not be anywhere fond of the Islamist menace. This is what matters most, right now, for the survival of the Republic.

Otherwise, pro-life and pro-choice issues would be the least of our worries. Or already decided by the Grand Mufti of al-Amrika.

"They attacked his city."

Same can be said for anyone living in New York City. I'm not betting on the majority of them to make the right decisions either.

Say what you will about Pat Robertson, he's actually far more grounded in reality that James (3rd party) Dobson.

People have been laughing at Pat Robertson ever since he presciently predicted the imminent fall of the Soviet Empire. I was one of them once. The guy is sharper than we think.

As for all of you hung up on the abortion issue, if Rudy appoints judges who overturn the judicial monstrosity, that's the best you can get. Frankly, quite a few states will remain abortion-on-demand until the end of time. I live in one.

Is Rudy my man? Heck no. But I'm not bolting if he's the nominee either.

Posted by: Nick Byram at November 07, 2007 07:15 PM (ujg0T)

28 One of the better aspects of Robertson's AND Weyrich's endorsements is that they will hopefully nudge some of the Moral Purists in the Christian community -- who would otherwise choose to stay home on election day rather than vote for a tainted candidate -- off the fence and into the booth, helping us avert a Dem presidency.

Posted by: red speck at November 07, 2007 10:25 PM (OoMad)

29 Why was Rudy up on that stage?

Because all the social cons are whining that they will take their ball and go home. That's why. Stop whining, man up, and support the GOP candidate that wins. (exception for Ron Paul.)

Posted by: Aaron at November 07, 2007 10:36 PM (257YW)

30 Ron Paul is a joke and should be tried with treason along with fellow democrats. *Yes I know he is suppose to be Republican, but I guess he registered wrong and have been showing up at the wrong debates.
