To be fair, that vote occured when the dems were still in the minority, and all of them except Nelson (NE) voted for the ban then.  They now have 5 more votes (6 new dems, but one replaced Chafee who voted for the ban as well), so theoretically they could prevail on the vote now.

But of course they won't have the vote now.  It's one thing to cast a meaningless vote, destined to fail, to "express their outrage".  It's quite another to stand up and take responsibility for taking away a tool, however controversial, that might save the lives of Americans.

It's all a fucking game to these pricks.

I believe that our elite special forces are subjected to waterboarding as part of their training.  I don't know that first hand obvisouly but I've read it from enough reliable sources that I believe it to be true.

Assuming that is true, I have a couple of questions I would like someone to ask these idiots.

1) Democrats, do you believe that we are torturing our own best troops by including waterboarding in their training?  If so, where is the outrage, the calls for investigation and prosectution?  If you don't believe that it's torture when done to our troops, why not?

2) What other techniques that are used in the training of our special forces do you also consider torture?

But it does raise more questions for me.  When I try to thing of how to define torture it helps me to start with something that's obvious like chopping off someone's thumb.

Every civilized person in the world would agree that is torture and that is something that we would never do to our own troops as part of training.  It's permanently deformative and I think that is an important facet when it come to defining torture.

Waterboarding actually to me seems to be the perfect aggressive interrogation technique in that it gets the subject's complete attention and encourages cooperation but it doesn't cause permanent damage.  I would think that we would want more techinques with those characteristics.

As far as the terror that it causes in the unsuspecting Muslim subjects, couldn't you make the same case about a Muslim terrorist being in a room with 15 pigs?  Or forcing a Muslim terrorist to flush a Koran down a toilet?

I guess my only thought when I heard that we subject our own troops to waterboarding was that it obviously isn't torture if it's something we do to our own as part of training.

Rosetta - if you read the link, you'll see that the waterboarding subjected during SERE is not the same as the waterboarding done to extract information.

The link also shows that waterboarding does not consist of just putting cellophane over the mouth to simulate drowning; in fact, water is poured into the lungs to bring the subject to death.

The link also shows that many have died or suffered long lasting side effects from waterboarding.
