I find it hard to believe that such a juicy rumor would be kept under wraps for so long. The free flow of information these days seems to negate that possibility, or it leads me to think that the scandal is something recent, or rehashed.

If it is the story I'm thinking of, it dates to the mid-1990s, and does indeed involve a leading Democrat that was inside the beltway that that time. I was first told the rumor around 1995-96 (which is why it happened prior to then, if this is, in fact, the same story), when a friend of mine who did an internship in Washington, D.C. and then came back to college and mentioned it in passing when we were talking about the Lewinsky scandal, which was on-going at the time.

I wasn't interested in politics at all back then, and let it pass without a thought. I don't know where my friend the intern got off to since, so I can't follow-up to verify if that rumor was true. I thought about trying to run her down and see if she'd be willing to go on the record, but figured she wouldn't, so I never tried.

I never figured it was that big of a surprise, anyway, if it came out.
