The Deciders Have Decided, Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez (US Army, Ret) About to Become Darling of the Left

General Sanchez covered a lot of ground in his recent talk to military affairs reporters, from media-military relations, the political climate in the US and what that means to the fight in Iraq and what the US has to do moving forward. But it’s clear the MSM have decided to emphasize only one aspect of the General’s speech…his harsh critique of the Administration’s planning and execution of the war in Iraq. I know, it’s shocking that that’s what they have chosen to emphasize.

Here are some other bits that might have been selected as the big take away but you know, they didn’t fit the narrative (sorry about the caps, but that’s the way the transcript is formatted):

AMERICA HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO CONTINUE OUR EFFORTS IN IRAQ. A PRECIPITOUS WITHDRAWAL WILL UNQUESTIONABLY LEAD TO CHAOS THAT WOULD ENDANGER THE STABILITY OF THE GREATER MIDDLE EAST. IF THIS OCCURS IT WOULD HAVE SIGNIFICANT ADVERSE EFFECTS ON THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.

Or maybe this:

SINCE 2003, THE POLITICS OF WAR HAVE BEEN CHARACTERIZED BY PARTISANSHIP AS THE REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC PARTIES STRUGGLED FOR POWER IN WASHINGTON. NATIONAL EFFORTS TO DATE HAVE BEEN CORRUPTED BY PARTISAN POLITICS THAT HAVE PREVENTED US FROM DEVISING EFFECTIVE, EXECUTABLE, SUPPORTABLE SOLUTIONS. But the Deciders have gone heavy on the Bush bashing angle (and let’s be honest, is anyone actually defending this administration’s handling of the war?) and the left will embrace their new hero. Of course, the MSM will ignore the fact that it was the anti-war left that was leading the charge for Gen. Sanchez’s firing since he was in command during the Abu Gahrib ‘scandal’. I am sure the KosKidz and others of that ilk will let bygones be bygones now.

Below the fold is a great example of the play this story is getting.

It's 544 words long and here's the last paragraph:

"The American military finds itself in an intractable situation ... America has no choice but to continue our efforts in Iraq," said Sanchez, who works as a consultant training U.S. generals.

So they finally get to the part where he says we have to stay (and who is reading that far down anyway?) but they team it up with the 'intractable situation' line. And I do mean team them up. If you look at the transcript those two sentences are two paragraphs apart but the AP cuts and pastes and makes up a new one out of whole cloth.

a little off topic but your "is anyone actually defending this administration....." just begs for a response.

DrewM, pretend for a moment that you are the president, given the resources available, the political situation at home (the Dems and their MSM supporters actively sabotaging the War and a significant portion of the population who just wish the War to just go away), how would you fight this war.

Not trying to be contentious here but does it not occur to you that there is an enemy on the other side who will go to any lengths to deny you your goal. They know they cannot defeat us in a standup fight and have chosen the slow drip tactic to undermine our moral at home and take advantage of our famous lack of resolve.

In war you make adjustments as conditions change, critizing the administration for not fighting an immaculate campaign with little or no casualties seems a little naive.

First off, feel free to be contentious.

I thought about that line as I was writing it and I think it's fair in the sense that the battleground for supporters of our efforts in Iraq isn't the conduct of the administration but rather the necessity of what's going on there and the stakes of failure.

The left on the other hand has done just the opposite, they want to make it all about BushhiterMcHalaburton and don't care if scoring political points leads to a strategic defeat for the country.

I think in general the left and right are arguing past one another.

That said, no one expects any President to run a 'perfect' war but everyone from the President on down has said mistakes were made and things could have been done better. But I don't see the President or the administration defending a lot of what went on to get us to where we are at this point in time. The fact that the surge was necessary was an explicit admission that the previous strategy and policy choices hadn't generated the desired results.

I read the whole speech. I was impressed by Sanchez's facility with buzzwords and bureaucratese, not much else. He kept criticizing "INTERAGENCY", like it was an actual organization. His prescription for victory:

I was a bit pissed at what I saw in the headlines.

Sanchez sees how lefty Congressional politics is forcing us into a Vietnam-like situation, so they can crow that they told us so. They've even had a few lying Kerry-like weasels slither out with fabricated atrocities. When politicians start tying the military's hands and defining the rules of engagement from an armchair resting 10,000 miles away, you've got problems.

The Dems laid low for 2 years after 9/11, because it was politically expedient to do so. By 2003, they couldn't wait to begin tearing the country apart again, merely to get elected. So far, they've done their best to re-create the horrific domestic tumult of the late 60's-early 70's. If you didn't live it, you have no room to speak. The left ought to be careful of their wishes.

As far as buzzwords and bureaucratese, Looking Glass, I see your point. But whaddya want? He's an executive, albeit a government/military one. He speaks a different tongue.

Most Iraqis only know dictatorship as a form of government, yet we expect then to do in a few years what it took the US nearly two centuries to accomplish. Then again, maybe we haven't. Our own form of sectariansim seems to be flourishing. It *is* more improtant to be (re)elected than to work towards national security.

Apparently, Sanchez wants to use overwhelming "force" of any type, to bring that country into a generally peaceful and lawful state. It makes sense, but not enough politicians have the balls to step up and authorize it.

Instead we bleed, slowly, to prove the Blues correct. I poop on them all.

13 Honestly, I was surprised when ABC News included Congress in their summary of Sanchez's remarks on the radio just now. I figured they'd just lay this on the White House's doorstep 100%.

But having read the portion of the transcript posted at Powerline, I'm not at all surprised that they omitted his criticism of the media. And it's not just because of the lefty bias, either, though that's an enormous part of it to be sure. I mean, why would they focus on the part of the story that rips them to shreds where their credibility is concerned? That's not going to gain them any readers or viewers, and they'll probably leave the reporting on that stuff to the media critics and/or ombudsmen, whose stuff most readers/viewers don't bother with. It will be interesting to see what someone like Tim Rutten at the L.A. Times, who has surprised me before, has to say about this.

I'm not defending them, really, so much as pointing out their pragmatism here. A story that trumpets the idea that this guy is calling most of them a bunch of unethical hacks is bad for business, and business is already bad, outside of cable news.

But, you know what, I think Gen. Sanchez is smoking dope to think that he'd ever get State on his side. Or that we could have a bipartisan strategy. (Actually, we had a friggin' bipartisan vote on the war...) Or that "interagency" would really be a silver bullet. His claim that the war is screwing up our Army's training, readiness, etc. is funny too. The armed forces exist to fight wars, not to be a finely tuned show car that you keep parked in the garage to show your neighbors. Granted, you don't want to "break" your army, but once you are in a fighting war what do you expect? A time-out from the enemy to re-fit and do some training exercises?

But still, a very interesting speech. 50% was devoted to eviscerating the media.

I don't disagree with you. I put "force" in quotations because in some places, you need to kick ass, in other places, rebuild infrastructure, or train teachers. By "force of any type" I meant to apply our full abilities as a people to put the place in a decent condition. It's not just military power - big parades of vehicles waving the flag and flexing muscle - it's the power of our other talents, too. Each is a force in its own way. Each has a time and place for use.

You're right, continuing a massive show of force was a fuckup during Vietnam. Lots of people were killed and many more fucked up for life. I have a couple of legs that highlight that point.

No, our guys didn't fully appreciate the details of modern asymmetrical war until they were balls deep in it. It is relatively new, especially with the new technology that is being phased in. All the theory and book shit went out the window when we started taking significant hits. Now, it needs to be refined and adapt to a changing situation. Cutting off funding and dissing the troops is the wrong way to go.

It's a war. Generals do fuck up. Other generals come in and save the day. Strategies change. It's uneven, asymmetrical, and uncertain. That's called History. We applied such force in Germany and Japan, despite my gripes with them, they are a helluva lot better off today and they are Allies. It's more difficult in Iraq because all they knew was Saddam Hussein's thuggery for several generations, and now there's battle for power among locals. Also, there are outside instigators that complicate thing more.

Each type of maggot must be destroyed in its own way. One size does not fit all. In a stabilized area, our rebuilding assistance gains friendlies. Once they have power 24/7 for a year or so, they won't want to go back to the stone age.

All this Monday morning quarterbacking and jerking off by our politicians here gives the Islamist towelheads encouragement - we look weak in their world. I see the General's broader point even if I might have quarrel with his visions of implementation. If he was so fucking wonderful, he'd be in the game and not in an armchair.

I don't want us to be dragged into another Vietnam. The politicians are the culprits, not the military. They could have done a helluva lot more to help get the job done, instead of jockeying for power.

Oh, I have a special place in my heart for some of the thugs in the State Department, who double deal just to keep their cozy personal friendships going. I believe they fucked up, too, by not carrying the civilian end of the stick. If military officers and enlisted can be smoked back here for their conduct there, a few heads at the State Department ought to roll, too.

One more thing. Clinton essentially castrated the military during his term. Hillary hates them, and Billy boy thinned the herd in the most brain-dead ways. So, when 9/11 comes around, our military was holding its collective dick. They didn't have the boots on the ground that some demanded - some that were behind the cut backs. We didn't have the equipment stores, e.g., body armor, because it was a greater priority to give unemployable slugs government jobs - fuck the soldiers. That was the motivation for all of the high-tech stuff -- there would be no massive forces available, so use technology instead. Don't think for a minute that 165,000 is "massive force." Try 3-5 times that. We just don't have the bodies. War is a game where body count is the ultimate decider of who wins. Well, what technology was available wasn't ready for ptime time. The technology ready for primetime couldn't get the sources needed to produce large scale manufacturing - the Clinton build-down crippled our defense suppliers, too. No force, the materiel stocks were down, Bush was still getting oriented to the situation and BOOM the shit hits the fan. I think we're doing as well as we canunder the circumstances.

All bets will be off if the lefties keep dogging and damning both the military, and those trying to keep this a safe place to live, and the Islamists think it's a time to hit us again. Say 2009.

The clean up won't just involve the eradicating the scattered asshats who caused the calamity, but also will include hunting down those turdlets who set us up for another fall.

22 I have a buddy of mine who was a company commander in the 101st when Petraeus was the division commander and Sanchez was the MNF-I commander. Petraeus was doing in Mosul with the 101st what he is doing now across Iraq. Sanchez didn't like the Petraeus' idea of putting soldiers into Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in the cities and interacting directly with the muktars. Sanchez wanted them to consolidate into just a few FOBs and ordered Petraeus to do that by the time 101st left Iraq. Sanchez felt the logistics were easier with fewer FOBs. My friend went from direct relationships with the local Iraqis to being moved to an unfamilar part of the city where it took an hour just to get off the FOB! Sanchez set into motion the Blackwater-like drive-by security strategy that fed the insurgency. In my opinion, he is feeling the political winds and doing CYA just like General Karpinski did after the Abu Ghraib story became public.

During WWII the War Department spent a lot of resource and personnel on fighting both. Since WWII, the newly minted DoD has outsourced the 'telling of the story' to 'professional' media. As you've discovered, they're not professional. The have their own reason for existence. They are more than willing to carry the enemy's water unchallenged. And here you are bitchin. So, what are you going to do about it? Shift manpower and resources from your authorizations to build a world class PAO effort like Marshall did? You can win every fight on the combat battlefield and still lose the war, was a lesson you didn't learn from Vietnam cause your force structure changes since then does show a lack of awareness of that taking hold. It was not and is still not LEARNED.
I've watched the military cripple the one piece of technology that will allow them to exploit the oppositions weakness, the internet. Remember the old unit clerk? It didn't matter what MOS the soldier had. If he could type, he was the clerk. A functional necessity. Well, General, you got kids who can blog and communicate with the peers back home in manner which end arounds the entire front line of media jackals. He/she is as much a needed and key player as the old company clerk. And what did the GO corps do? Why they listened to the fears of their MI, trying to justify their existence, and basically shut the kids down and surrendered the one tool you had to 'tell the story' to the folks back home. Look into the mirror General, you are your own enemy as well. Your peers and follow on's are going to keep making the same fundamental mistakes and have the same problems till you face the fact you have to wage war on both fronts and it can't be outsourced at either end.

Someone told me years ago that the Army doesn't like urban guerilla warfare, so the Army doesn't train for it.

I suspect Rumsfeld, or someone, had a deliberate policy of not doing too much, to force the Iraqis to rise to the occasion. It was the long struggle of our Revolutionary War which kept the states together 80 years, after all. He obviously forgot the end of Lawrence of Arabia, when the Arabs all squabbled.

Fuckin' A, Bubba. I am.

I had a pretty good idea what the interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq would entail, and they have turned out sharply more pessimistic than ensuing reality to date. That is both in terms of timeline and human cost.

Have mistakes been made? Sure as shootin'. Have things gone sideways from time-to-time, yeah, but that is any large-scale human enterprise of moment and consequence.

Sanchez puts his finger directly on the one problem that needs to be dealt with, the capriciousness of Dems to support then oppose war, putting perceived political gain over national interest. They need to be punished by voters, or we will suffer such behavior again.

Otherwise, tell me what you see as perfectable. Use any of our previous wars as your standard for things going smoothly.

For my money, the Bush admin and our military have done an amazing job.

We all can badmouth the media (it is embedded and doing Pentagon work), but the general should be litened to for what he says about the actual war effort. Absolutely! The administration kept most Iraqis either on our side or neutral. That's an outstanding achievement. You think things are bad in Iraq? Ask the French how bad Muslim insurgencies can get.

The French had 500,000 troops in Algeria, for a population of 9 million. To get the same troop-to-citizen ratio you'd need 1.5 million Coalition troops in Iraq. The French also fought the war the way so many Americans want us to fight in Iraq: leveling villages that harbored insurgents, calling in artillery and air strikes with no regard for civilian casualties, summary mass executions, torturing prisoners to death, and putting 2 million in concentration camps.

Between 350,000 and 1.5 million Algerians died, but the French still lost. They also lost 18,000 troops in eight years, a KIA rate almost four times ours.

Our changing strategies in Iraq kept our casualties down and turned the population not only against Sunni terrorists but also Shi'ite militias. We did it by convincing people that we weren't conquerors or occupiers. We paid a heavy price, but the price could've been much higher.

For keeping Iraq from becoming another blood-soaked killing ground like Algeria, the administration gets a giant "attaboy" from me.

Far from being a "nightmare with no end," Iraq is shaping up to be a massive victory, which Sanchez played no part in achieving.

53 What is new or different. A few weeks ago the Washington Post ran four stories vis a vis Iraq. There were four with a negative slant and one that was positive. The three negative slanted stories, including one part of series on IED's and another about Blackwater all enjoyed front page coverage while the positive story which detailed the dramatic and across the board drop in casualties was buried on Page 14. Since the media can bo longer be trusted to fairly and accurately bring the news to the folks the blogosphere must act as a watchdog to the media.

Thus all of this complaining is worthless without action. Everyone reading these pages must contact the ombudsmen of each of the newspapers and tell them how you feel. Only when critical mass is reached will change happen.

54 I think there is an error in the transcript. The word "Interagency" appears in the transcript 5 times. But in the context of the speech it does not make sense. I think he was saying "Intel Agencies" and the transcriber got it wrong. If so, the speech was a major league attack on hte performance of our Intelligence Agencies and it simply was not reported as such. I also found it astonishing that the European Stars and Stripes was so biased inits reporting on Abu Gahrib.

Virtually the entire media has mischaracterized the "nightmare" comment in Sanchez's speech. They have ignored or dramatically mischaracterized the first half of his speech where is directs his criticism at the Press coverage of the war saying that it has harmed America.

The fact that this general is now acknowledging some of the things that the anti-war camp has been saying all along STILL does not absolve him of his responsibility for Abu Gahrib. I do agree with him that the political and economic sides of the equation have indeed failed. Naturally he believes that military is blameless.

I don't give a shit if he comes out and says that Bush is a war monger. Hang him high in the public square for his dereliction of duty and for being a coward who allowed some low level enlisted soldiers to suffer for decisions he and his chain of command made.

I would accept the reality that Iraq as a single geo-political entity has been a work of fiction since the British created it in it's current state in the 1920's. I would accept that the only reason it has lasted this long as a single entity is because the country was held together by one repressive regime after another, from the Ottoman empire to (literally) Nazi sympathizers to Saddam. I would stop trying to force upon the country an artificial government that is trying to unite three groups that have hated each other going back hundreds of years.

In short, I would TRULY turn the political process over to the Iraqis and pull the troops out. Yes, there is a good chance this would result in civilian unrest / civil war. There is also a very good chance the country would be broken up. However if nothing else that would be a more organic result. The government that they have right now is artificial, and the people see that. I'm not saying that democracy is impossible here, but there is too much hatred between these three tribes to (willingly) unite them under one politic....unless another dictator is involved. But polite society isn't willing to discuss that option yet.
