LOLDebate!

Mary Katharine Ham jerks another one out into the cheap seats.

Humorous LOLcaps aside, a really good run-down of the debate.

Matthews: Me, me, me, me: So predicted Malkin about the spittle-drenched hack and his insatiable love for the sound of his own voice.

And so it was.

Video: I'd have preferred a Cheneyesque "Go fuck yourself" from Thompson, but I understand the need to keep it PG.

Video: Rudy vs. Ron Paul. Who cares. Beating up on this Ass-Puppet For Ahmadinejad is too easy and it's no longer satisfying.

Still:

Link: sevenload.com

More from Hot Air, including video of a Romney/Rudy slapfest on taxes and the line item veto.

I'm not sure that's really all that either.

Bleg: Can anyone do a quick and easy audio-dub?

More One-Liners: Some of these I've already quoted, but Fred Thompson's line at the end here is very good.

Guiliani also had a good slap on Bartiloromo on her question about the possiblity of London replacing NYC as the financial capital of the world. Rudy is excellent at these debates...tells Maria to "Get her head up...stop being so pessimistic", etc. etc.

7 I kind of don't want to say here as it would give away the joke, you know?

8 Matthews Just Crossed an Unimaginable Line [John Podhoretz]
As moderator, Chris Matthews intruded himself into the proceedings following a Fred Thompson answer on a possible Chrysler strike by saying that Fred Thompson went on too long and would have been better off just saying "No" and stopping there. I've never seen such a blatant act of obnoxious misbehavior during a debate. Ever.

Aside from the fact Matthews is just a juvenile tacky little man, but 'too long"? Has there ever been a bigger case of the pot calling the kettle black?

*sigh*

Ron Paul really is an annoying little fuck, isn't he?

Sorta like Ross Perot, only more retarded. I wonder if he has the foggiest hint of a notion that the only reason he is even on that stage is to and reduce the amount of time that an actual idea might get out.

Come to think of it, he also reminds me of Pat Buchanan.

And that homeless guy that used to walk around out in front of the 32nd St. Naval Base.

Posted by: fretless at October 09, 2007 07:37 PM (BFFza)

11 Too bad he's right. The Constitution is very clear about the Congress's role in the declaration of war. Maybe it is quaint and old fashioned. But I was born in the United States and I'd like to die here, as opposed to this other country that Romney is imagining, where the lawyers re-write the Constitution to say whatever some bloggers think it ought to say.

MKH and jerking just seem to go together.

Posted by: Eric at October 09, 2007 08:01 PM (eSqCK)

13 But Paul isn't right. Like his supporters, his answer is smarmy and superficial, but completely irrelevant to the adult discussion. Only Congress can declare war. So what? Only the President is the Commander in Chief. What's your point, Paulnuts? The sophomoric Paul line doesn't come anywhere near answering the question of "Does the president have the authority to direct an attack on an Iranian nuclear site?"

15 I think too many people had absurd expectations out of Thompson, so people are saying "it was fine," and that's it. I've sort of ignored all the pre-debate hype, and I thought he was excellent. Self-effacing, sense of humor, and he turned the arrows back on the archers.
I loved how he called Chrissy Matthews "Christopher." HA!

Posted by: Beth at October 09, 2007 08:26 PM (yqiXY)

16

Well, yeah, a "fuck you Chris, you spitwad' would have been more satisfying.

Still, watching Chris giggle uncomfortably after his comment wasn't all bad.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at October 09, 2007 08:33 PM (FXakj)

17 Any kind of pre-meditated strike on Iran needs congressional approval. If you don't like it, there are plenty of countries with crazy, despotic governments where you could move to... like Iran. If you disapprove of the Constitution, it is your freedom, I suppose. But your opinion (or some judge's, for that matter) is not the same thing as a constitutional amendment.

Posted by: Oops at October 09, 2007 08:35 PM (tOFGj)

18 Also: Fuck Marshall Applewhite Jim Jones Ron Paul and his cult of lunatics who know absofuckinglutely nothing about economics in the real world. Their rainbows and unicorns utopian world view makes me want to vomit. It's no wonder there are so many troofers in that crowd of delusional morons--you have to have had a complete break with reality to buy into Ron Paul's bugfuck crazy "vision" for America.

I'd love to see one of the other candidates (most likely: McCain or Rudy) bounce his crotchety, Buick-driving scrawny ass off the stage and send him to the bingo hall where he belongs.

My only disappointment in the debate is that Fred! didn't get in a zinger at L. Ron Hubbard Paul and his cult children.

Posted by: Beth at October 09, 2007 08:37 PM (yqiXY)

19 People definitely had absurd expectations for Fred. They expected Fred! to act like a real life version of AoS's mythical Dick Cheney (equipped with power-penis and leopard condom). Instead we got a man who was well spoken and gave direct answers.

"Video: Rudy vs. Ron Paul. Who cares. Beating up on this Ass-Puppet For Ahmadinejad is too easy and it's no longer satisfying."

I know I shouldn't care - but oddly enough it's still satisfying. As long as I have to keep reading the trolls on the internet, the nuttier conspiracy theories, the occasional anti-Semitism, the constant spamming again and again, I do enjoy this.

I'm watching the replay right now:

Paul just attacked the "military-industrial complex," Wall Street, and hedge funds - how the hell is this guy a libertarian?

Posted by: funky chicken at October 09, 2007 09:48 PM (I+jPP)

25 Somebody remind me, please ... but I don't recall Wm J Clinton asking Congressional approval before he loosed an attack on that aspirin factory. Am I wrong?
I.
Don't.
Think.
So.

Concerning Fred ... short of walking off the stage and giving Chrissy the bitch-slapping he really needs ... what would his detractors have had him do/say?

Admittedly, Rudy handles himself well in an adversarial situation. God knows he was in enough as Mayor. That is NOT to say he would be a good POTUS. His baggage is too heavy for the majority of the Republican base. Certainly the more Conservative wing of the GOP.

Posted by: burnitup at October 09, 2007 11:28 PM (Wb0cN)

28 No, Clinton didn't get congressional approval before launching missiles into Afghanistan and Sudan. But EVERY SINGLE PRESIDENT has carried out a similar attack. (I put that in all caps so the Paulnuts would understand it.) This is not "declaring war," and their actions were not unconstitutional. But when you live in the coffee shop/debate club/circle jerk world of the Paulnuts, you don't worry about the real world.

Posted by: jmc at October 09, 2007 11:32 PM (XAn7t)

29

EVERY SINGLE PRESIDENT was wrong, and paid a price.

You don't trust the Senate, so you want to acclaim either Caesar or Pompey. I can understand that. Some batshit crazy lunatic morons with unicorns would like to preserve the Republic. We had a different sort of legislature from Rome--you could vote it out--but you feel impotent to do that; you're sure the majority is against you, and so you seek a Great Leader to prosecute Great Wars for you. I can sympathize with that too.

BUT under War Powers, no President will ever have a free hand to successfully prosecute a war. The debate starts as soon as he commits. With a declaration of war, the debate happens first, followed by a temporary and severe extension of federal spending and suspension of rights. Congressmen don't get to re-vote. If you oppose, you're a traitor even if you publish the Chicago Tribune. It's effective and efficient, and you'll never win without it. You can yell and gag and puke about Ron Paul all you want, but if you keep trying to wage war without putting your ducks in a row, you're not going to win a Global War on Anything.

have to have had a complete break with reality to buy into Ron Paul's bugfuck crazy "vision" for America

Really? So what part, exactly, do you think is crazy? Much of what he proposes (the abolition of the income tax, a return to hard money) is policy that was at one time the law of the land. Maybe you don't care for the abolition of the Departments of Education and Energy - but what do they accomplish for all the billions we spend on them? Or maybe you think that his foreign policy is far too dovish; but if that's a sign of lunacy then half of America is 'bugfuck crazy'.

I wonder, too, whether you think the 50-60% of voters in Brazzoria County who regularly send him back to Congress are also 'Paulnuts','crackpots','assholes' or what have you. Maybe they, who have known Congressman Paul for longer than you, have some insight into his character.

Personally, I don't entirely agree with Paul on foreign policy, and there are a couple of other minor issues too. His adoption of the rhetoric of the antiwar left clearly drives many people away. But he's an honest man who walks his talk, and I support him for the nomination.
