The Jena Six

Obama was apparently talking white on this case, according to Racial Authenticity Expert Jesse Jackson, which is what has pushed it into the national media spotlight. They did such a good job of burying it before few heard of it so now we all have to play catch-up on the New OJ/Duke Racial Narrative Case.

Apparently the media didn't want to cover it because the narrative was too muddy. True, there was palpable racism in Jena; but also true, a gang of six black athletes cold-cocked a white student apparently at random and proceeded to beat and stomp him. And also true, the black thugs seem to have been overcharged originally with a hard-to-defend attempted murder rap. (Correction: Kaspar tells me the white student wasn't picked out "at random" but was in fact baiting the blacks about a black student who'd been jumped the day before. I'm not sure that's true, as I really only know what Bryan's written, but Kaspar seems well-informed.)

What lessons can we draw from this? Well, not terribly many, or at least not very simple ones; the case, alas, has little to say about George Bush or Iraq, and does not support simplistic slogans about Rich White Athlete Privilege.

It's all more nuanced than all that, which you think would make it our very nuaced media's preferred sort of story, but not so much.

Anyway, I thank Bryan for finally explaining this all to me. I was waiting for the MSM to do so, but they were asleep on the job so a blogger took care of it.

6 Attempted murder requires an actual intent to murder someone but because of some strange circumstance the victim doesn't actually die.
Attempted murder is usually a throw away charge that the DA adds with the intention of dropping it as part of a plea deal with defendants.
People should not read too much into the fact that the DA "overcharged" these fine young fellows. The bigger issue here is that because of this story's lack of a clear politically correct fact pattern the MSM has ignored it.

The victim was among some white kids who were taunting a group of black student-athletes, including one who had been beaten up several nights before. The black kids got angry, and jumped one of the white kids. Six black boys then beat the white boy. It was a fairly serious beating. The initial fall knocked him unconscious. But after treatment at a local hospital, he left on his own, and attended an event that night.

12 Instapundit linked to this piece which does a nice job of laying out the facts, at least as much as can be determined out of the muddle of this. For instance, I had no idea that Bell was on probation for assault when this happened. This is a case where everyone seems to be in the wrong. The kids who put up the nooses should have been expelled and I want to know who was related to whom on the school board to have that decision changed to a three day suspension. I would hope it goes without saying that the racial taunting on both sides was out of line. The prosecutor shouldn't have drastically over charged. The kids who participated in the beating should do time. The white kids who were involved in the other altercations should do time. The whole thing is a mess. I forget where I read it but someone noted that the Jena Six were unfairly, but not wrongfully, charged. I think that sums up my position on it.

There was a time when I respected Jesse Jackson and he seemed to really care about his passions. I actually met him in the 70's when I was around 11 or 12. He brought around 300 black folks to register to vote at my Dad's courthouse (in Mississippi). It was 5:00 and that was when the courthouse closed. But my Dad kept it open and paid everyone out of his own pocket. (he was a very smart man. You can see the headlines, right? "Courthouse shuts door in the black communitie's faces."

Anyway, I was handing out forms and meet Jesse. I admired him through the 70's because I felt he really cared about his people. He started Operation Rainbow Push which helped young black boys at the time. He even spoke at an early National Right to Life rally in the 70's and said the following:

"Never let them tell you that a fetus is not a human being, that is what they tried to say about the negro."

Jackson completely reversed himself when he ran as a democratic nominee for President. That's when I knew that he would throw away all of his beliefs for political power.

He sold his soul. And his face shows it.

I saw Sharpton on Hannity the other day trying to get Hannity to say that he supports freeing the Jena Six. There was other mic trouble or Hannity feigned mic trouble as he seemed to not her the question and there for not answer it.

If someone gets the chance, I'd love to see someone ask Sharpton or Jackson, point blank, "Is 6 on 1 a fair fight? Isn't that cowardly?" Race related or not, 6 on one is a pretty puss way to roll.

This case is about more than a group of black students "cold cocking" a white boy.

* This is about offensive nooses being hung on a tree. Administrators writing it off as though it were a "joke".

* A series of fights taking place over several weeks. A white boy taunting blacks and getting his butt whipped.

For those of you who are old enough to remember the riots in LA after the Rodney King incident, there is a video of a black man hitting a white man down on the ground with a concrete block. He was not convicted of attempted murder because they couldn't show intent.

I keep hearing a lot about other things that whites did to blacks in Jena, but these don't seem to be the stories. Jackson and Sharpton aren't saying a word about those.
