| Obama Chastized for "Acting Like He's White"Reverend Jesse Jackson (apparently he's still around?) criticised Senator Barack Obama during a South Carolina interview on Tuesday for "acting like a white man" with regard to the "Jena Six." If you (like me) missed all the hubbub about the "Jena Six," apparently six black students were charged for the racially motivated assault of a white student in December of 2006. Five of the six were originally charged with attempted murder, a rather outrageous treatment for a school-yard brawl, even in Louisiana. One of the six was controversially tried as an adult. His conviction has recently been overturned. The situation has become something of an important cause in the black community. However, the fact that a news-phile like me can remember hearing nothing about it is not good. Jackson later said he couldn't remember making the remark. He obviously wasn't thinking of white men like David Bowie, who just today gave 5,000 to the Jena Six Legal Defense Fund operated by the NAACP. To steal some words from Obama: Jackson is one of the reasons "we still have a lot of work to do as a nation to heal our racial tensions.Comments1

I'd love to hear Jesse explain what "acting white" means. Sounds suspiciously like the stereotyping he rails against on a regular basis.

There's a reason bare knuckle boxing is illegal. Its dangerous. Wasn't the victim knocked unconscious? Remember Junta killed a dude in a fistfight over a hockey game. I'm just reading this story now...have the six attackers apologized to their victim? Its all fine and dandy to say they were over-charged...but six on one beatings is pretty brutal. The 6 black dudes stomped the white dude until he was
unconcious. The white dude had a concusion and one eye swollen shut. Have any of you been beaten until you lost consciousness? Overcharged!!!! Thats bullshit!! In NYC we recently had a case where a white dude beat a black dude who was trying to steal cars in the neighborhood. Because the white dude used the word nigger when he was laying the smackdown, he was charged with a hate crime and sentenced to 15 fucking years in prison!!!! Now thats overcharged!!! Now, details on a national level are slight, but I had heard that some white teens beat up on some black kids as well (in a separate, but related incident.) They were NOT charged with attempted murder, which is one of the reasons for the complaint.
The story is a mess, but is it symbolic of the state of race in the US? I don't think so. Today, there is a bus leaving from Detroit to Jena ... to protest or whatever. I swear, is only we could motivate people for positive change in their own community, like they do for stupid protests. I have an idea ... why don't you protest in the West Side of Detroit were gangs and drugs and crack addicts are ruining the hood? Not interested? Didn't think so. Anyone find a good link for a summary of the case? I can't seem to find a lot of info, but I don't have a hell of a lot of sympathy if 6 people attacked 1 person and did some serious damage. Posted by: Ryan Frank at September 20, 2007 08:29 AM (/a9/x) 13

A sharp finger wag from The Man would be considered an over-charge. They are innocent until Jesse is proven crazy. Not gonna happen. The protests continue... Posted by: Joanie at September 20, 2007 08:50 AM (Z9tCp) 15
Six on one? Beaten until he was unconscious? Were statements made, ie, Kill the bastard? Since everyone admits it was racially motivated, was it charged as a hate crime?
There was something similar that happened in Long Beach last Halloween. A gang of black kids attacked some white females and beat the shit out of them, skull fractures, lost of an eye, threatened wits during trial, etc. Tried as juveniles and slapped on the hand. And still, the black community whined they were treated unfairly. And for the record, it was black adults who saved these victims from even greater physical assaults. Dave,
Amen brother! I am absoutely sick to death with these race hustlers and pimps trying to stoke racial animosity and looser sentances for blacks, who have the same level of racial animosity and hatred as any other. If I get into a fight with a black person, he can call me honkey, cracker or white devil, all the live long day, but if I call him a nigger, I will be charged with a hate crime! I say, let the jena 6 rot in jail, it's only fair!!! Posted by: McLovin at September 20, 2007 09:05 AM (ipez1) 20
This version jibes with what I've heard. The incident began with a "white" tree, and some nooses hanging from it when blacks wanted to sit beneath it. The story should have ended there - I mean, let's face it - racist and intimidating behavior was on display. Lectures from the local law enforcement followed, but not much initially. But here is where it goes from there:
When the season was over, so was the truce. On Nov. 30, somebody burned down Jena High. Whites thought blacks were responsible, blacks thought the opposite. The next night, 16-year-old Robert Bailey and a few black friends tried to enter a party attended mostly by whites. When Bailey got inside, he was attacked and beaten. The next day, tensions escalated at a local convenience store. Bailey exchanged words with a white student who had been at the party. The white boy ran back to his truck and pulled out a pistol grip shotgun. Bailey ran after him and wrestled him for the gun. After some scuffling, Bailey and his friends took the gun away and brought it home. Bailey was eventually charged with theft of a firearm, second-degree robbery and disturbing the peace. The white student who pulled the weapon was not charged at all. The following Monday, Dec.4, a white student named Justin Barker was loudly bragging to friends in the school hallway that Robert Bailey had been whipped by a white man on Friday night. When Barker walked into the courtyard, he was attacked by a group of black students. The first punch knocked Barker out and he was kicked several times in the head. But the injuries turned out to be superficial. Barker was examined by doctors and released; he went out to a social function later that evening. Six black students were arrested and charged with aggravated assault. But District Attorney Reed Walters increased the charges to attempted second-degree murder. That provoked a storm of black outrage. To me, law officials were willing to look the other way, up until the point when black students started to be the trouble makers. Carin,
Fuck all that noise! The incidents involving the white kids are trivial and are not of sufficient level to charge with any crime! The black kids beat the crap out of a white kid, leaving him unconscious! I have had it up to here(I have my hand up to my forehead), with justifications for black violence. Posted by: McLovin at September 20, 2007 09:16 AM (ipez1) 24
Honestly, I don't think either of you know me very well- I am NOT a black apologist, and certainly don't think every black person is innocent. I think just about everyone behaved very badly in this story. Someone please show me a story that demonstrates the white boys were seriously injured? I don't care for NPRs opinion pieces, but I often find the news stories to be rather middle of the road.

The sainted Jena Six include a guy with two prior convictions; they stomped and beat a white guy until he was unconscious. This is pretty serious stuff and it's a shame Jesse Jackson spends all his time looking for the the Great White Defendant and the Great Repeat of the Scottsboro Boys instead of dealing with the fact that so many blacks act like a bunch of savages and too many of them spend their spare time killing each other for the high crime of "dissing."

Uh, NPR is middle of the road? Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Their "news" articles are about as middle of the road as the BBC's or CNN International's. Eh, after the Jena march they can swing by New Orleans to tell the thugs in the ghetto down there that all their problems are whitey's fault too. Jena sounds like something from the fucking 1940s. Those deep south backwaters are really something. Carin, the reason you can't find any reputable MSM coverage of this is that it isn't flattering to the blacks involved. I did see a story on CNN.com about the charges being dropped or the adult conviction being overturned on the one guy (who had two priors for assault). Yeah, real saints there. I remember when we first moved to Montgomery, AL 13 years ago or so, a white soccer mom type got lost and drove past a public housing project...in broad daylight...and a mob of 12 to 15 year old black boys dragged her out of the car and beat her almost to death. It got a day's coverage in the local news, but not a word nationally. Obviously Jessie and Big Al weren't terribly interested in the case. That same year or thereabouts was the OJ trial. Roger L Simon wrote a good article about how the OJ trial started his departure from hard core liberalism. It's worth a read, if you haven't already seen it. http://pajamasmedia.com/2007/09/oj_changed_my_life.php The LA beatdown of the two college girls was only unique because it got some national level news coverage, although it's possible I only heard about it by reading blogs. The "inner cities" have been run by feral beasts for at least 15 years. Is it getting worse because of the glorification of thuggery by commercially popular "gangsta rappers?" Maybe. But it's certainly not new. The fact that intelligent college students like the couple in Knoxville would consider trying to take a short cut through the ghetto proves that the squeamishness we feel about talking about those ghetto beasts does cost lives. Here in Newport News (Michael Vick's homietown!), we've experienced a skyrocketing murder rate generally confined to the ghetto around the shipyard. The mayor has indicated that the police have essentially declared the 'hood to be no-man's land, as the most recent spate of murders go unsolved. Why: 'cause nobody's "snitchin'" on the perps. So if the black community doesn't wish to assist law enforcement in any way and circle the wagons around their thugs, why should we be surprised when they throw so much support for a group of brave assailants (six against one)? If the white student had managed to fight them off, we'd be hearing about his assaulting a peaceable group of young men. Just remember that these people throw 95% support to the Dumbocrats.... I do believe there are incidents of racism everywhere and not just in a small southern town. I also believe there is plenty of racism directed at whites. What I refuse to accept are the accounts of this case by interested parties with a definite point of view. Again, I am interested in the evidence and testimony introduced at trial under oath and subject to cross examination. For that, I will have to wait and read the appellate courts opinion. I am not going to convict/exonerate defendants based on all this crap being reported on the internet. Posted by: dave at September 20, 2007 10:36 AM (81jvk) 44

Originally, the school expelled the white students who hung the nooses. It was later overturned and they were given 3 days inhouse suspension. I do think they should have received a harsher punishment including the expulsion. Posted by: dave at September 20, 2007 10:55 AM (81jvk) 47

Dave, I agree, expel the idiots. If the school had done the right thing the escalation probably wouldn't have occurred. But school districts are totally pussified now, unless we're talking about one student giving another an Advil or sharing an asthma inhaler with a friend who's having an attack. Most public high schools should probably expel about 5% of their students in any given year, to be honest. Public education is available, for "free," for every kid in the US. It's an opportunity that most children on earth couldn't even dream about being offered....and kids need to be told that we will take the opportunity away from them if they act like thugs in school. Period, no matter what race/gender/disadvantaged/advantaged background, whatever. You can't behave like a decent citizen? You don't need other decent citizens to pay for your education for you. That means that the kid who had two prior convictions for assault should never have been allowed back into the general public school population either. The injustice of "hate crime" legislation doesn't mean I'm going to support the over-sentencing of these teens in order to "get back" at those uppity niggers. How about some intellectual consistency here? Dave, I would appreciate a link to an actual story of the facts of the trail. I think the whole story is ridiculous. Do I think, given the opportunity to editorialize, they swing left? Completely. But, their straight news isn't that bad. After the latest Bush speech, it was hurl-inducing.

carin, that's typical of inept public school administrations all over the country. the race-baiters are trying to turn it into some kind of whitey is the devil story instead. the NPR piece follows that line...it's insidious, it's just under the surface, but that's how they do it. You have idiotic public school administrators caving in to parents who don't want their precious babies expelled, even though they deserve it. That's terrible, but it happens all the time. There is simply no excuse for 6 teenaged boys to gang up and beat the shit out of one lone teenaged boy, period. Regardless of race, regardless of anything. This victim ran his mouth and acted like an ignorant redneck boob. 6 kids beat the shit out of him for it. And you seem to think that's OK? Just because the 6 thugs were black, and the incitement was "hate speech?" "Hate speech" justifies extreme violence in response? Posted by: funky chicken at September 20, 2007 11:38 AM (I+jPP) 54
The six kids deserved to be prosecuted, but what, exactly, is proper punishment? Are there mitigating circumstances? Certainly the original charge was overkill, which was what set this whole thing off. It's just idiotic.
People beat each other up all the time, and don't go to jail. My husband's partner beat the crap out of a guy two weeks ago - caught him with his wife. Should he go to jail? Hint; he's not even being charged for anything. As for racial issues, I live in the belly of the beast (Detroit.) I've been picked on because I was the only white kid in school. I'm for locking up criminal/thugs. But, in a day and age when murderers get released, over-charging these teens with such a murky back-story is just stupid. Mind you- I was laughing at my tv last night as they showed all the Detroiters getting ready to get on the bus to drive down to Jema. Posted by: carin at September 20, 2007 11:44 AM (jEzDP) 55

An assault is an attempted battery of which fighting would be the factual basis. Also, there are no convictions in juvenile court and it is rare to see misdemeanor charges, too. For some reason that escapes me, almost all charges are filed as felonies. Posted by: dave at September 20, 2007 11:58 AM (81jvk) 58

I don't speak for carin, but I don't think anyone here has said it was "okay" for the Jena Six to assault the white kid. Credit where due. Anyone that rankles Jesse Jackson gets points in my book. And then Obama came out with this: OBAMA ON JENA: "Outrage over an injustice like the Jena 6 isn't a matter of black and white. It's a matter of right and wrong. We should stand as one nation in opposition to this and any injustice. That's why I've previously spoken out and demanded fairness in the Jena 6 case. That's why I've fought against injustice as a civil rights attorney and public official, and why I'll continue to fight to heal the wounds of division in our nation as president. My statements on Jena 6 were carefully thought out with input and support from one of my national campaign chairmen, U.S. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr." Clubbing Sr. over the head with Jr. was a nice touch. Wish he would thrown in "...so he can kiss my half-black ass"... Posted by: hit and run at September 20, 2007 12:53 PM (jjNS6) 63
The original problem was the flaccid response of the school principal/superintendant who re-admitted the dumbass white kids after having announced the expulsion, which was appropriate. Then the local po-dunk cops proved completely incompetent to deal with the escalating fights between the two sets of kids. Then it got very, very ugly at the end, with an incident that couldn't be ignored. You may have a Nifong type prosecutor down there, or the kid who just had his conviction overturned may have wanted to kill the victim, who knows? The seemingly crazy attempted murder charge happened at the end of a long chain of pathetic, unfortunate trashy old-South style events. Whatever, it's just not an important case, and I would think the animalistic conditions of the "inner cities" would be worth more of Sharpton's time than driving all over trying to set off more race riots, but hey, I suppose that would give the man credit for having some kind of positive goal for his community. Scott, about 20 years ago, Jesse said he'd been alone near some teenager boys on a dark street, and he was ashamed that he was relieved that they were white. I haven't heard if he's addressed the crime issue since, except for excusing Clinton's.

The Wikipedia article was very informative.
Jena seems like a messed up place, and yeah the punishments were a bit heavy. The two interesting points in that article: 1. The cut down the white tree. I think that's very important as an action by the school to say to the white kids that the nooses were intolerable. You act like dummies you lose your tree. 2. The jury was all white because no black jurors showed up after summons. What happens then? Drive out to the black area of town and press gang some jurors? I still think that a six on one attack that results in the vic being unconcious is very serious, and the Jackson/Sharpton crowd should make the Jena 6 do some serious moral "reparations" if they do get reduced sentences. Let's not make it seem like we reward violence. Posted by: Aaron at September 20, 2007 10:54 PM (2S6ot) 70
Thanks for making my point, Dave. Ass.
