I know an Iranian guy pretty well - one that got the hell out back in 1980. He goes home to visit family back in Iran for a month or so every summer. His world view is different than mine, but rational enough. He's not a 'nut' muslim... just a 'normal joe' muslim. Anyhow:

Couple of points that he's mentioned that keep running through my mind.

First is a story he told me about an incident he had in Iran (the details of which don't matter) where the central point was that the weaker you are the louder you yell to try to scare off your enemy. In the story, it was "the bigger the rock you pick up, the less likely you are to throw it." It's some sort of cultural thing.

Next was his point that most of the people in Iran are still peasants with little education and little understanding of politics or the outside world. They'll support the Mullahs and believe anything the Mullahs tell them - to the death.
