Victory for Andrew Sullivan and Captured Terrorists!

The CIA has removed water-boarding from the list of approved interrogation techniques.

The controversial interrogation technique known as water-boarding, in which a suspect has water poured over his mouth and nose to stimulate a drowning reflex, has been banned by CIA director Gen. Michael Hayden, current and former CIA officials tell ABCNews.com.

The officials say Hayden made the decision at the recommendation of his deputy, Steve Kappes, and received approval from the White House to remove water-boarding from the list of approved interrogation techniques first authorized by a presidential finding in 2002.

The officials say the decision was made sometime last year but has never been publicly disclosed.

Why exactly did the CIA do this? Is it just responding to pressure or did it not really work? Earlier reports had been that , despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth on the left, it does work.

Now I am sure St. Heartache will be offended by the title of this post and claim it’s a victory for America but we all know who has been agitating for this and who benefits.

Why exactly did the CIA do this?

Because they have a wide stance.

2 I'd like to think they got rid of waterboarding only because they found something better.

They did.  It's called vinegarboarding.

If you thought KSM broke like a bitch that Wickedpinto tossed away, wait till you see how fast they buckle under vinegarboarding.

4 What about habañero sauce boarding?

5 I heard the new technique is called "making water"boarding.  Not quite as effective but the Islamonutters really hate it.

Swirl-boarding.

If I'm not mistaken, "waterboarding" is used to train US Military aircrew, and other, at risk of capture, members during SERE school.

Its tough, but not torture.

Great! Now the only place you can get waterboarded is at gay S&M clubs.

9 Fortunately, I don't think Gitmo is under the purview of the CIA.

10 Water boarding is passe... the new rage is salad tossing

11 Sullivan won't object to that, he might even help out with his power gluts.  Someone tell him to stop shaving in order to add texture.

12 I'm wondering if Al-Qaeda will, in turn, remove "sawing off a hostages head with a dull knife while he's alive and screaming" from it's list of approved interrogation techniques.

I rather doubt it.

13 If they were to switch to milky load boarding, would Andrew still object?

Seriously, I've seen NYU socialists waterboarding each other in Union Square just to show how awful it is.  My question: if a bunch of pussy college douchebags can handle it, how bad can it be?

Posted by: Kensington at September 15, 2007 02:38 AM (Hzq7R)

14 What a crock of shit.  We waterboard our own people and the libtards don't object.  I've been waterboarded and I can tell you it works.  Here's how it works.  Even though you are not in serious physical danger, your natural survival instincts go beserk and tell you that you are drowning.  You can't rationalize it at all and you completely flip out.  The guy with his hands on your throat is actually a doctor or medic checking your pulse.  As you begin to pass out they pull the towel off your mouth and revive you for the next round.  Pussies don't win wars.  Be afraid.

15 Well said, Dan.  Either our imilitary (as well as more than a few frats) is "torturing" our own and we've just been ignoring it, or the other side is full of crap.

Actually. that's too gentle.  If we have not been torturing our own, the other side is actively pushing the enemy's agit-prop to slow us down.  Not that we would ever question their patriotism.  They are as patriotic as heck.  Personally., I just question which "patria" has their loyalty..

16 So we're going straight to the electrodes now?

The SERE program trains US military personnel to resist torture.  Simple enough for you?  So if we use SERE methods on captives, then we must be torturing them, right?

Xoxotl:

Sawing off your head might be an interrogation technique, because your brains certainly aren't found inside it, and you appear to be speaking out of your ass..  For the rest of us, it is a grisly way to kill someone, and has no relation to this argument.

18 For the rest of us, it is a grisly way to kill someone, and has no relation to this argument.

Uhhhh-huh.  Are you a troll on only a moron?

I'll use small words, since apparently you didn't get my point before.  Yeah, my fault, I know, I was being way too subtle.

Al-Qaeda chops people's heads off.  Usually in as much of a gruesome and painful way as possible.

They take a particular pleasure from chopping off the heads of Americans and (especially) Israelis.

By removing this interrogation technique (which does zero physical damage, and causes bodily discomfort and psychological distress), we are intentionally removing a tool to prevent more Americans from having their heads sawed off.

This is a rather shortsighted thing to do, from a logical point of view, because Al-Qaeda will continue to saw heads off, regardless of how concerned we are for their comfort.  All this will do is give guilty liberals a chance to pat themselves on the back for being all "progressive", which will be of little comfort to the poor sap who's head is being sawed off at the time.

Thank you for playing.

Xoxotl:

Care to tell us how many Israelis have been beheaded by Al Qaeda?

As noted above, sawing someone's head off is not an interrogation technique.  I may be wrong, but you seem to think that torure is ok, not to gain usable intelligence, but as a means of deterrence and revenge.  In case you didn't know this, many experienced and skilled interrogators will tell you that torture is an extremely ineffective means of gaining useable intelligence, because the subject will tell you what you want to hear, and it almost by definition will not be verifiable.

You can believe that or not, but that leaves you, and the cretins who think like you, far closer to Al Qaeda, in that you advocate using torture, not because it is an effective interrogation tool, but to get a message across--be it deterrence or revenge.  That is why Al Qaeda saws off heads.  I suppose we should be thankful that you only advocate waterboarding.  I dare say that if you were waterboarded repeatedly, over a period of time, you would become a psychological basket case, which in your case would be an improvement.

20 Nice points made. It is so controversial, but I feel it should be used by the CIA, which is a totally diffent conceptual warrior in the battle against extreme jihad. If someone is captured who know's where a dirty radioactive bomb will go off tomorrow, then waterboarding is necessary for quick information gathering. Please go to my website at: http://www.robertmorton.net/ and go to the "Blog Me" section. From there, you can vote on whether or not you agree with waterboarding as an interrogation technique.
