Nothing to See Here, Just a guy with an AK47 in Dearborn, MI Park, (Updated) Something to see?

Who knows, maybe he’s just a random nut job walking around a public park in camouflage and an assault weapon or maybe there’s something more sinister here. I guess the MSM will have to wait to see how to spin this…gun nut=lots of coverage, sudden jihadi=not so much.

A 26-year-old Dearborn resident, Houssein Zorkot, was arraigned in 19th District Court Tuesday on several felony charges, including carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent.

Zorkot, a third-year medical student at Wayne State University, was allegedly armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and dressed in black clothing with camouflage paint covering his face when he was arrested Saturday in Hemlock Park.

On the upside, the FBI has sprung into action

Dearborn police have called in the FBI to help with the case. FBI spokesperson Dawn Clenney confirmed they had been contacted about the case, but declined to discuss the issue any further.

"We are aware of the situation. It's their situation," Clenney said. "Beyond that it would be inappropriate to comment."

Via Instapundit

UPDATE:

Looks like there’s something to see here after all. Rusty at The Jawa Report has this quote from what appears to be the guys website:

"The start of my personal jihad"
was posted on the day Zorkot was arrested.

And he proclaims his support for Hezbollah!

But the FBI says, ‘it’s their (the Dearborn Police's) situation”

Move along everybody.

To be fair I probably wouldn't feel safe in Dearborn with anything less than an AK-47 either.

Picked that up at LGF, apparently Zorkot is a pretty clear (and hopefully ineffectual) Jihadi.

At least, I hope he got caught before he planted anything or killed anyone, they seem to think so, so far...

3 I should also mention that it is possible that someone else spoofed him, but it's pretty quick work if that's the case. Haven't read all the rest of the site.

4 "allegedly armed with an AK-47 assault rifle"

Really? Was it full-auto, or selective-fire? Maybe, but I note that the media seem to have responded to complaints about the phony "assault weapon" category by misattributing the identity of a real one.

Posted by: mrobvious at September 13, 2007 12:45 PM (8Y/fG)

5 I mean, in general. Don't know if that's true here.

According to police, Zorkot was observed attempting to leave the park in a black SUV after officers had received reports of a man carrying a rifle in the area. He was placed under arrest and is scheduled to undergo a preliminary examination at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 in 19th District Court.

Muslims are already subject to racist profiling when attempting to fly.  Must we now be subject to racist profiling when enjoying our nations parks?

We condemn this sort of knee jerk Islamophobic reaction.  This would not have been considered suspicious if he was a white male.  We demand to know the identity of those who reported this to the police so that we can investigate them to see if racial profiling and anti-muslim bigotry was involved.

Allahu Akbar!

Sincerly,

Ibrahim Hooper

7 Well, no wonder he couldn't complete his plan to engage in Jihad; he couldn't find a non-Muslim to kill.  Are there even any non-Muslims left in Dearborn?

There are a few, they can't sell their homes unless they go way below market.  It's such a pretty little area too, what a waste.

13 Uh... as someone who was a weapons safety instructor, I would debate that definition with you, Robb... the way it was defined to me was that an assault rifle was...

"An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle or carbine firing ammunition with muzzle energies intermediate between those typical of pistol and battle rifle ammunition. Assault rifles are categorized between light machine guns, intended more for sustained automatic fire in a support role, and submachine guns, which fire a handgun cartridge rather than a rifle cartridge."

Now, if you wish to classify the AK-47 as a battle rifle, then that order of semantics makes some sense. There are many I know who would call the AK, FN FAL, Steyr AUG, M-16, et cetera, battle rifles.

In the meantime, I've talked to more than my share of Feds who are out buying up all the intel they can get out of Dearborn- one may safely assume that they are trying not to jeopardize undercover work already going on.

15 This is getting almost zero coverage here in the Detroit area, from what I can find.  An article in The News and a local paper -- that's it so far.

Posted by: mesablue at September 13, 2007 03:32 PM (KCOdQ)

And, it looks like one local station,WXYZ, had the story.  It happened on Saturday, but information was not released until yesterday.

His face was blacked out and he had to be tazed.

As much as I despise J. Edgar Hoover, he'd be a hell of an improvement over the PC dhimmis running the FBI now.

Re the AK-47: It's more like a SMG than a full up assalt rifle, especially the Chicom versions. You can hit what you're shooting at with a M-16 more than 400 yards away. With an AK, the phrase most commonly used is 'spray and pray'.

Now if you'll excuse me, LE's reaction (no jihad here, move along) has driven me to drink.

Posted by: ticticboom at September 13, 2007 05:54 PM (gFMmu)

18 Just to clarify on this now dead topic,  the AK-47 is classified as an assault rifle.  HOWEVER, the rifle the jihadi was arrested for carrying almost certainly was NOT an actual AK-47.  It was only the semi-auto version which can be purchased in the USA.  Therefore that particular rifle was NOT an assault rifle.

Posted by: Keith Olberdouche at September 14, 2007 12:37 AM (7gCh5)

19 Sorry, I dropped off the planet there. KO is right. An AK-47 with select fire (or, an actual M-16) is an assault rifle. It has the ability to fire more than 1 round per trigger pull.

So, I stand slightly corrected if you consider an AK-47 as fully auto. I doubt he had that kind of AK, though, and that's the point I meant to make.
