Bomb Plot In Germany Foiled

The most massive would-be terrorist attack on German soil ever, so authorities say.

Three terror suspects held in Germany planned to carry out “imminent” and “massive” bombs attacks on a U.S. air base and Frankfurt’s international airport, according to officials.

“They were planning massive attacks,” Federal Prosecutor Monika Harms said.

“As possible targets … the suspects named discotheques and pubs and airports frequented by Americans with a view to detonating explosives loaded in cars and killing or injuring many people,” Harms told a news conference on Wednesday.

The suspects, two Germans aged 22 and 29 and a 29-year-old Turk, received terrorist training in Pakistan and had close ties to al Qaeda, according to Jorg Ziercke, president of Germany’s Federal Criminal Investigation Office.

The chemicals seized included 1500 pounds of hydrogen peroxide, used in a terrorist favorite explosive known as TATP. Confederate Yankee notes that's a fairly ambitious explosive to synthesize, and is skeptical the guys involved had the know-how to pull it off.

Once again terrorist attackers in the West are linked to Al Qaeda in Pakistan, and not, notably, Al Qaeda in Iraq. Our very tough, strong liberal war critics may argue this indicates that Al Qaeda in Iraq won't "follow us home" if we stop fighting in Iraq, but this seems a farcical claim. Of course the Arab branch of Al Qaeda would be plotting against us at home were they not engaged with us more directly on what they consider more friendly ground.

It also undermines, yet again, liberals' favorite claim: that fighting terrorists in Iraq "only makes more terrorists." If that's the case, then it seems that fighting terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan should also "make more terrorists;" indeed, for those keeping track, it certainly seems to be the "Asian" (as the Brits say) jihadis most animated to and capable of attacking the West directly. So should we stop fighting them there, in order to make fewer of them?

I actually think that's what they believe, but dare not say. They never supported the War In Afghanistan so much as they reluctantly acquiesced to it, thinking that they had to concede this particular war to the crazy jingoistic rightwing war lobby and the easily-misled "sheeple" who were enraged by 9/11. But following the logic of all their various arguments against fighting terrorists in Iraq suggests, inevitably, that not fighting them in Pakistan and Afghanistan must be preferable to fighting them. After all, we'd "make" fewer of them there, and they're the ones actually reaching out to strike the West.

Surely it can't be the War in Iraq is "making" terrorists in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Wouldn't Asian jihadis be more incensed by the bombs falling on their own heads then all the bombs dropped in Iraq? This whole argument seems based on the premise that Pakistani terrorists are minted by the War in Iraq, considering that war unjust and an insult against Islam, and yet somehow believe that the ongoing coalition military actions in Afghanistan and Pakistan are perfectly justified and nothing to be especially upset about. I rather doubt they share in the exquisite nuance of liberal anti-war critics and doubt they are passionately angry about the War in Iraq while conceding "Okay, I'll give you this one, my bad" about the War in Afghanistan.

1 Eh. They're in germany. They'll serve a couple of years in prison -- max. They just released the woman who was responsible for murdering four US servicemen after 26 years, which is an aberration in that the sentences for murder rarely go over 15 years. If you're a committed terrorist, what's a couple of years with a cot and four hots for a few years?

2 How incredibly bizarre that we have to have television ads reminding us how important it is to win in this battle for our very survival.  Could you imagine this happening during WWII?

I'm getting misty just thinking about those poor, poor suspects.

Yeah, Wiser.  You know what else I want?  Quasi-propaganda films.  I saw the WW2 movie Sahara (starring Humphrey Bogart) a few weeks back, and it was really neat.  Made and released during the War.

Well, wait.  We do get propaganda films like the ones I want, only the ones we get now are propangandizing for the Enemy.

I wonder if this is a variation of Ace's Republican Tax.  As long as there's an (R) in the White House, it's just fearmongering; go to sleep.  Would the liberals/media bang the drums and rattle the sabers if 9-11 had happened on Gore's watch?

I think not.  What about when the U.S. bombed Germany?  Dresden?  Hello?  Remember that?  1,000,000 innocent women and children burned to death to cover up evidence of the BushCo connection with Hitler.  And besides, Germany never attacked us.  We attacked them.  The war on Germany was a distraction from the real war against Nazism, the war against Japan.

Hello?  Japan!  The ones who bombed us at Pearl Harbor!  They were the enemy.  But no, Republican incompetance in WWII was just as bad as Republican incompetance now.

You frickin' wingnuts keep getting us into the wrong wars!

I'm with you some guy, I love the WWII propaganda films.

Sahara is great, they did a remake with James Belushi. I haven't seen it nor will I. I don't trust the current Hollywood crew to make a movie where America is the good guy.

The thing about those  war movies was that, contra what a tolerant, loving, nuance-filled lefty will tell you, they weren't all sunshine and dead Japs. They were definitely Rah-Rah, but they showed "your best buddy" dying, they showed stupid commanders doing stupid things, but they were unequivocally on our side.

Now? The only movie since The Green Berets (and maybe In The Army Now) that depicts America as the good guy starred puppets and had a bizarre sex scene.

9 I think the liberal mindset Re: "making more terrorists" goes like this:

A teacher sees two boys in the schoolyard, one is being savagely punched by the other repeatedly. The teacher runs over, and breaks up the fight. The teacher pulls aside the battered boy and asks him "Why didn't you defend yourself?" the boy answers "Because then he might have hit me back!"

You see, we have to let them kill us, if we resist they might get mad and hurt us.

Veeshir,

The Sahara remake with Belushi was surprisingly good.  It was very faithful to the original with supporting B-list actors doing a good job all around.  Belushi's take on Sgt. Gunn was a more tougher and rugged NCO than Bogey's which was fine by me.  A nice flick if you can catch it.

Anyhow, the real enemy in WWII was Phillips Petroleum. Along with IG Farben, they started the war so they could make profits.

Why do you think America and the Brits got involved after the Germans invaded France?

For the oil!

Same with in the Pacific  - we were protecting our vital oil well in Maui and Manilla.

Won't fighting terrorists in Germany also just make more terrorists?

How many more terrorists did we make just by arresting these guys?

By the same token, does fighting terrorists in the US just make more terrorists?  No wonder the Dembocrats don't want us listening on suspected terrorists telephone calls.  We might arrest one of them.

The arrests in Germany typify how terrorism is fought effectively.  Cooperation (between the US and a country that has often been critical of  US policy), excellent police work in tracking and monitoring the suspects, making sure that the plot was far enough along to be able to charge them with real crimes, and operating under the rule of law.  In short, the antithesis of what Ace and the  mouthbreathers who agree with him is the best way to go after terrorists.

Of course Acey goes off on an irrelevant tangent about "creating" terrorists.  Here's a newsflash:  Perhaps if US intelligence, military and economic resources hadn't been funnelled away from Afghanistan to Iraq, Al Qaeda would not have been able to reestablish itself in the Pakistani tribal areas.

One firghtening aspect that was--typically--ignored.  Two of the arrestees were Germans, not brown, foreign looking types who can be easily profiled.  Something to look forward to...
