Souter Cried Like A Girl, Pondered Resignation After Bush V. Gore

Amazing.

In “The Nine,” which goes on sale Sept. 18, Toobin writes that while the other justices tried to put the case behind them, “David Souter alone was shattered,” at times weeping when he thought of the case. “For many months, it was not at all clear whether he would remain as a justice,” Toobin continues. “That the Court met in a city he loathed made the decision even harder. At the urging of a handful of close friends, he decided to stay on, but his attitude toward the Court was never the same.”

Wow.

It never amazes me how much hatred the left has and how a political defeat has a long-term emotional impact upon their psyches.  Truly pathetic.

I seriously hope we don't have to rely on them to protect us against our enemies.  If only they could turn their anger toward Islamic radicals like they have toward Republicans.

3 If there ever was a bathroom tapper, Souter is it.

Posted by: dave at September 04, 2007 01:43 PM (3Hur8)

4 So who are these wretched "friends" and how do we keep them from interfering in the natural order of things in time to come?  And how do we make and enforce a rule that prevents Souter from leaving D.C. while he's still on the Supreme Court?  Maybe, if we're really lucky, we can make him cry like a Voinovich before it's all over.

5 He "almost" quit.  Quite the conviction there.  Loser.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at September 04, 2007 01:57 PM (pzen5)

8 If true, this is obviously someone who has never had to fight or sacrifice for anything important in his life. If a court case can make him weep, what'll he do when the rubber really hits the road?

Anywho, Toobin is a complete weenie so I don't necessarily accept everything he writes as truthful. I've seen him analyze cases and wonder if he and I were even reading the same decision. He really lets the semi-objective facade fall when he's on a foreign net like CTV.

Posted by: Laddy at September 04, 2007 01:57 PM (WEQwZ)

9 Toobin was Souter's soul mate in 2000 when all this was going down iirc. I happened to be in Canada at the time and couldn't believe what I was hearing on CTV as compared to when I would dial in Fox or CNN on the cable.

10 Remember, this guy was appointed by George H. W. Bush.

Can anyone tell me anything that Bush Sr. did right?

11 Can anyone tell me anything that Bush Sr. did right?

I can name 3 off the top of my head....

1. Clarence Thomas
2. Spared us from President Dukakis (come on, Bush the Elder is better than that. Marginally better anyway).

And 3....I can name two things off the top of my head.

Posted by: Drew at September 04, 2007 02:05 PM (hlYel)

12 He appointed Clarence Thomas.

Posted by: ashton at September 04, 2007 02:07 PM (oEJBs)

13 So, Gore asks Florida's SC to overturn an election, they say "sure," Bush asks the Fed SC to tell Florida they can't overturn an election by changing rules mid-stream, they tell Florida they have to follow their own laws as the election is already under way.

And this gives Souter a nervous breakdown? What did he want, a precedent for State SC's to change election law any time they damned well felt like it?

The fucking left turned this story around pretty much on day one and REFUSE, REFUSE to admit no matter how hard you hit them with the facts that it was GORE who tried to "cheat" the election, and the Supremes STOPPED HIM FROM CHEATING.

I was home with the flu that week, I watched the whole thing happen in realtime, and watched the left and the MSM start rewriting the story pretty much the day after it happened.

That was kind of one of those crystallizing moments when you realize that half the people you know are either dishonest or insane.

Not necessarily a fair trade for squandering Reagan's legacy, but it's something; I stand corrected.

Not necessarily a fair trade for squandering Reagan's legacy, but it's something; I stand corrected.

That sounds kind of harsh.  Is that truly warranted?  I know he screwed up by raising taxes for the Dems, but did he really "squader Reagan's legacy?"

Oh, and Souter's a disgraceful pussy, like so, so many on the left.  It's amazing to me that the Democrat party remains viable in 2007.  How did that happen?

At the time, yes.  Now, not so much.  Good morning, Iran!

Flew 58 missions, got partial credit for sinking a Japanese cargo ship, received the DFC, 3 Air Medals, and a Prediential Unit Citation in WWII.

I was confining myself to his presidency.  If we're widening our stance, so to speak, a few more: devoted husband and father; always conducted himself with grace, class, and humilty; continues to model the right ex-presidential profile; puked all over a head of state; and the number one thing he did right:

Marry Barbara.

27 Some of you guys wouldn't be happy if you didn't criticize someone who is a far better person than they ever will be.  Besides Thomas and The Gulf War,  Bush oversaw the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union as well as apartheid South Africa.  Those things and the aftermath didn't happen in a vacumn. He captured Noreiga and helped other nations retreat from marxism.  He was able to keep the country from going into a far worse recession following the S&L debacle and had the economy in positive numbers by the end of his term in spite of Greenspan's scatterbrained pronouncements.  He kept the democrats from enacting much of their agenda which they tried mightly to do through lies and half truths much like today.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I know you're partially joking but it really is our double edged sword.  Our constant criticism and never being satisfied is one of the driving forces behind America's greatness but it probably will also eventually lead to our downfall as it consumes us.

Posted by: alabaster jones at September 04, 2007 03:11 PM (GczzL)

34 alabaster jones,

Are you in the old man's will or something? Yes, he seems to be a terrific guy and is a true American hero (I think he was the youngest pilot in the Navy at the time he joined) but let's be real here.

What exactly did he do to bring about the fall of the Soviet Union (except argue against it, remember the Chicken Kiev speech)?

How about signing The American's With Disabilities Act or convening the Madrid Conference?

Any presidency is going to have it pluses and minuses but Bush I was clearly a minus on the whole from a conservative standpoint.

Only insofar as he happened to be president when it occurred. Most of the credit for this properly belongs to Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

Posted by: sandy burger at September 04, 2007 03:28 PM (Cpse7)

39

Yeah Drew I didn't interpret that speech the same way as that hard core conservative Safire did.  If you think it was not a big accomplishment to manage the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union I assume you think you are much smarter than you really are.

Posted by: alabaster jones at September 04, 2007 03:28 PM (GczzL)

40 and the number one thing he did right:

I wish I had a video of the time during the 1992 GOP convention where Mrs. Bush completely eviscerated Al Hunt's wife, whatsername, I forget; anyway, the liberal info babe was trying to skewer Mrs. Bush with Democrat talking points and Mrs. Bush made her look like a complete idiot, live and on camera.

One of the high points of an otherwise depressing election year.

Posted by: OregonMuse at September 04, 2007 03:37 PM (yqZ3t)

41

All the spittle-flecked hatred that the left has for Bush stems from the fact that they weren't allowed to cheat their way to a presidential victory.

Think about that for a moment.

Posted by: Warden at September 04, 2007 03:37 PM (4H3hL)

42 alabaster jones,

So, I guess you think you are much smarter than William Safire because according to your world view we apparently aren't allowed to criticize or disagree with those who are smarter than we are. Or is it just George H. Bush who is off limits?

What exactly did Bush do to 'manage the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union', which btw is a big walk back from your original contention that he 'oversaw the fall' of the Soviet Union?

Seriously dude, are you in the guy's will or something?

"David Souter alone was shattered,” at times weeping when he thought of the case.

I envision a moment where Souter emerges from his office, still dabbing his eyes with his lacey kerchief...sniffling hard to hold back the anguished tears.

He looks up and, through the weepy mist, sees Scalia directly in front him, approaching with outreached hand.  Before Souter can say "imminent domain' Scalia pushes Souter back into his office with a light thrust of his hand and then slams the door behind him.  As the door closes with a bang, Scalia unleashes several slaps across the face of the sad, pathetic clown.

"Get a hold of yourself, Eva Peron!!  You're a Supreme Court justice for God's sake!!  You're disgracing yourself and this court by behaving like a whining sob sister.  Pull yourself together and fucking grow a pair, you weak-kneed school girl.  When you walk out of this office I expect you to comport yourself like a man so we don't have to have this conversation again."

Also...Toobin's an arrogant, snide douche.

51 From the secret diaries of Judge Souter:

I don't think I've ever seen such a look of misery and dejection on the face of Al Gore as I just did a moment ago. He  just couldn't understand why the Democrats were not allowed to cheat their way into office. 'Doesn't the Supreme Court care about the country anymore ?'' he asked pitifully.

I sat down with him on the bench and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to him why the the rest of the judges did this. 'I think they were bought by Karl Rove in order to put the Republicans into power. You see, after Clinton solved Global Warming, eliminated poverty and maintained World Peace for 8 years, they were just too envious of our power and status.'

I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. I think Al could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, "I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore...'

When I finished, his lower lip started to tremble and his eyes began to fill with tears, 'Judge' he  said, 'why is SCOTUS doing this to us?"  Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. He just fell into my arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes.

For once he had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think it's too much, but seeing the strength in Al Gore's voice helped me to get through.

To add another item to the list: he sired Bush Jr. -- who, warts and all, has achieved much more than just about anyone on either side of the aisle cares to remember.

To quote the Bush family coat of arms: "Melior quam Dukakio, melior quam Goro, melior quam Kerrio; ergo mordete me."

Hmm... I used to think I was against any presidential candidate who wanted to visit North Korea, Syria, or Iran, but now I think I might be ok with that if they promise to just get off the plane, ralph on the guy, get back on the plane and leave.  Bonus points for if they eat a hearty meal of bacon and eggs just before landing or if they make a short speech before leaving featuring the phrase, "You make me sick."

Best way to deal with these guys.

They want a soft water reactor? Vomit, faint, sign of approval, disappear.

Then act as though that addressed the issue and served as a suitable answer, and insist we move on to other business and not talk about it.
