| Democratic Fundraiser Turns Himself InNorman Hsu, Democrat fundraiser extraordinaire, turned himself in to authorities in San Mateo. Bail was set at $2 million and Hsu briefly saw the inside of a jail cell. He was back on the street in minutes. He's hired James Brosnahan, a stellar defense attorney based in San Fransisco. Brosnahan is known most recently for unsuccessfully defending John Walker Lindh. Other Democrats have followed Clinton's lead in giving away Hsu's donations:Hsu was involved in state and local politics as well. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer donated $62,000, the amount he got from Hsu, to charity. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who received $1,000, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who received $1,250, also were turning their money over to charity, their aides said.I knew this guy was big, but I didn't realize just how connected he was to Democrats at all levels of government. His counsel, Brosnahan, is himself a big Democratic activist and a very, very heavy hitter in the SF legal community -- one of the top two most respected lawyers in the city. And frankly, if I were in big trouble, I'd probably want him or the other big dog in town on my side, if I could afford them.
From what I've seen of him, he's also kind of a tool. Part of why he's so respected here is that he plays and speaks to very sympathetic audiences. He spoke a few times at my law school regarding his defense of "Walker, Taliban Ranger," and I was less than impressed at the points he made, which were designed to play to the liberal law student body's pro-underdog emotions (paraphrasing: "when I met him, I found this kid who was scared and desperately needed help") and anti-administration sympathies (paraphrasing: "i think there are two kinds of people; those who think that rights are important and those who don't" -- which left my jaw hanging open at both his audacity and at the heads nodding around me in agreement with him). He ducked getting into a lot of specifics, which I guess was his duty as the little shitbird's counsel, but I was pretty turned off at the warm reception he got from my classmates. As Byron York pointed out in National Review, he has a long history of politicizing his cases, including releasing the indictment of Cap Weinberger -- including a note that was immaterial to the charges but which suggested improper knowledge on the part of Bush 41 -- to the press just a few days before election day 1992. Question the timing indeed. Brosnahan also participated in smearing Rehnquist at his Chief Justice confirmation hearings with accusations that he'd witnessed Rehnquist engaging in voter suppression in 1962. The problem with Brosnahan's story:
First, eight other witnesses who had been present said they never saw Rehnquist doing anything of the kind. Second, the man who headed the Phoenix Democratic party at the time testified that he had never heard the accusations about Rehnquist. And third, Brosnahan -- despite his apparent strong feelings -- had not come forward when Rehnquist was first nominated and confirmed to the Court in 1971.
Posted by: Alex at August 31, 2007 07:32 PM (fgyj8) 3

Soo ... they're "giving away" the money they recieved directly from him... That was actually pretty quick. Almost like they weren't surprised? Um ... what about the money they got from ... aah, you know ... postal workers able to somehow donate more than their annual salary? Kinda makes ya wonder if there are any more average wage earners able to make curiously large political donations? *IS* anyone looking into where Hsu got the money? Seriously ... China? Soros? Posted by: fretless at August 31, 2007 07:35 PM (aua10) 5
Giving away the money is punishment? Are we supposed to assume that Hillary will only give the money away to groups from whom she expects nothing in return?

Wait, I lost a couple of million of dollars out of my pockets when I was walking around DC a couple of years ago. Hsu must've found it!
Can I have my money back, please? Posted by: EC at August 31, 2007 07:39 PM (j2Tjh) 7
I'm with Sobek.
Instead of being in a political candidates' pocket, it will be in.. wait for it... a _lobbiest's_ pocket. Who can, then bury it. Wait, no! Recycle it around... again."Oooh, look, we made her give money to MoveOn!" -> ANd how did that help _us_ exactly? Are you kidding? My Haikus reek. Maybe Monty will have one. This story might be a good one for demonstrating one difference between the present day and 1996 (the year of the China/WhiteHouse/Cash scandal); not much of an internet or blogosphere then. Maybe the MSM won't be able to protect Hillary and Bill this time. Bloggers are a real wild card in this game. Posted by: eman at August 31, 2007 08:25 PM (F/DIG) 12
If only Hsu had been propositioned by a GOP senator in an airport bathroom, then this story would REALLY have something worth reporting.

Hsu gives bad bucks 'round. Turns self in; Dems dump money. Like it never was. Yeah, my haikus suck. Bear with me. Posted by: Secundus at August 31, 2007 09:07 PM (xqBcG) 14
When I read this, I can't help but think of those morons you see on 'Cops', buying crack or something and then trying to toss it when the fuzz closes in. Maybe if I throw it away, they'll stop chasing me. Posted by: Secundus at August 31, 2007 09:16 PM (xqBcG) 15

They set bail? I mean... he's clearly a flight risk, there should have been no bail at all.

How is the guy out on bail. I thought last time he fled before his sentencing. This one wacked out system.
