Nuanced ABCNews Headline: IRAQ LIKE VIETNAM... BUSH'S NEW TALKING POINT AS 14 AMERICANS DIE
Update: Now Changed... But Screencaps Are Forever

The newsroom is a sacred, magical place where unhinged partisanship never intrudes into actual reportage.

Except when it does.

The actual reference occurs on page three of the article:

After comparing the current war against extremists with the militarists of Japan and the communists in Korea and Vietnam in Wednesday's speech, he plans to discuss the war in Iraq in the context of its implications for the broader Middle East in a speech next Tuesday at the annual American Legion convention in Reno, Nev.

abcscreamerpic.JPG

Isn't. That. Special.

Thanks to H.

A Bigger Screencap... is here. As you can see it's the top story as of 3:00 PM. I don't know when it went up with this screamer headline.

Thanks for that second screencap Dave.

MSM Suddenly Convinced Iraq NOT Like Vietnam, Now That Bush Has Suggested Comparison To Mass Slaughter and Displaced Boat People: Apparently Iraq is only like Vietnam in ways that benefit the Democratic party.

Who knew?

In related news... Liberals are so gosh-darn thoughtful they're incapable of thinking in anything less than doctorate theses, whereas conservatives can only chant simplistic slogans.

Simplistic slogans like

IRAQ LIKE VIETNAM: BUSH'S NEW TALKING POINT AS 14 AMERICANS DIE

as a fer instance.

Changed! Now reads "New Bush Talking Point: Iraq Like Vietnam."

No more caps, no more "AS 14 AMERICANS DIE, DIE, DIE!!!11!!"

'Sokay. I got it all screencapped.

The Actual Text Of His Remarks: Of course the MSM isn't interested in reporting them. But the Weekly Standard is. I'll swipe a bit because I'm going to link them in my next post anyhow:

Three decades later, there is a legitimate debate about how we got into the Vietnam War and how we left. There's no debate in my mind that the veterans from Vietnam deserve the high praise of the United States of America. (Applause.) Whatever your position is on that debate, one unmistakable legacy of Vietnam is that the price of America's withdrawal was paid by millions of innocent citizens whose agonies would add to our vocabulary new terms like "boat people," "re-education camps," and "killing fields."

There was another price to our withdrawal from Vietnam, and we can hear it in the words of the enemy we face in today's struggle -- those who came to our soil and killed thousands of citizens on September the 11th, 2001. In an interview with a Pakistani newspaper after the 9/11 attacks, Osama bin Laden declared that "the American people had risen against their government's war in Vietnam. And they must do the same today."

His number two man, Zawahiri, has also invoked Vietnam. In a letter to al Qaeda's chief of operations in Iraq, Zawahiri pointed to "the aftermath of the collapse of the American power in Vietnam and how they ran and left their agents."

Zawahiri later returned to this theme, declaring that the Americans "know better than others that there is no hope in victory. The Vietnam specter is closing every outlet." Here at home, some can argue our withdrawal from Vietnam carried no price to American credibility -- but the terrorists see it differently.

We must remember the words of the enemy. We must listen to what they say. Bin Laden has declared that "the war [in Iraq] is for you or us to win. If we win it, it means your disgrace and defeat forever." Iraq is one of several fronts in the war on terror -- but it's the central front -- it's the central front for the enemy that attacked us and wants to attack us again. And it's the central front for the United States and to withdraw without getting the job done would be devastating. (Applause.)

If we were to abandon the Iraqi people, the terrorists would be emboldened, and use their victory to gain new recruits. As we saw on September the 11th, a terrorist safe haven on the other side of the world can bring death and destruction to the streets of our own cities. Unlike in Vietnam, if we withdraw before the job is done, this enemy will follow us home. And that is why, for the security of the United States of America, we must defeat them overseas so we do not face them in the United States of America. (Applause.)

As Allah points out, Bush didn't say Iraq was like Vietnam -- he said it would be like Vietnam were we to surrender. Apparently the high-nuanced folks at ABC have not mastered the nuances of the subjunctive or conditional moods.

1 Anybody got an over-under on when this headline disappears?

Does the msm have any idea how much a significant percentage of its potential audience hates its f*cking guts?

And that it is hated because of its constant complete in-the-bone preening never-ending dishonesty?

I cannot wait until the msm as it presently exists disappears.

And I'm getting bored with waiting for it to die a slow natural death.

6 In their defense, I firmly believe that many of the staffers in these newsrooms are really, really stupid.  In others words, I don't think they are cognitively capable of processing Bush's comments.  They heard "Vietnam" in a speech they were told was about "Iraq" and their reptilian brains just wrote the headline without further thought.

Posted by: Fred at August 22, 2007 03:05 PM (ivbbD)

7 As much as I hate this type of completely dishonest bullshit from the msm, what is wrong with Bush and/or his handlers for giving them this kind of freebie?  Seriously, we have been hearing idiots like Kennedy and Kerry scream about how Iraq is Bush's Vietnam for years, so Bush's great new idea was to come out and give them this?

Brilliant.

Meh..maybe I'm not finding it but I think it's allready changed a bit.

All  I see is a link that says "Bush Likens Iraq to Vietnam as 14 Americans Die in Copter Crash" in the 'Top Stories' section.

Click on it and the headline is "Bush: History to Prove Iraq War Worth It"

The title on the webpage is still "ABC News: Bush to Invoke Vietnam in Iraq Speech as 14 U.S. Soldiers Die"

I am sick of his being too nice.  I can not wait for Fred to be our man.  I have supported Bush and continue to support his war on terror but he has lost me on most other issues starting with immigration.  Guess I have said enough.  I find I read a short post and not many of the longer ones anyway.

13 Slublog,

It doesn't matter if it was an accident. Anything that can be used to further
the MSM's agenda that the war is a disaster will be ceased upon.

Military service has always been a dangerous occupation, you can put these deaths into context by telling the reader that from 1992 to 2000 there were
approx. 5000 accidental deaths and this is during a time of peace. In fact
accidental deaths have actually gone down since the start of the war.

This is what kills me. I looked everywhere on the left side of the blogosphere and could find no reference to our killing or capturing 1,500 al Qaeda every month since Jan. Not one.

But they did have this nugget over at Atrios:

"Ellen Tauscher finds a nut:

I don't know of anybody who isn't desperately supportive of the military," she said. "People want to say positive things. But it's difficult to say positive things in this environment and not have some snarky apologist for the White House turn it into some clipped phraseology that looks like support for the president's policies.

This is only half of the equation, however. Any criticism of the president's policies is instantly redirected at "the troops." If you praise the military, you're actually praising Bush! If you bash Bush, you're actually bashing the military!

It's quite sick, it's been going on for a long time, and all decent people should find it revolting"

Question. When has this EVER happened? Please find me one example of the a "snarky apologist" saying when a Democrat makes a positive statement about the military that he/she is praising Bush??? Good grief. I guess it's more important to stay quite about how wonderful our military is than to MAYBE be looked at as supporting Bush in any way. Ugh.

Does anybody have President Bush's exact words in which he used the word Vietnam?

I mean, if he said banalities like, "....In Iraq we face a vicious and determined  enemy, just like we faced in Vietnam, Korea and Japan...." that is not exactly a comparison. It is just some filler words. If we dont have filler words, speeches will be over in 3 sentences.

Neither is some words to the effect: "Compared to Vietnam war, the casualities/battles/resources  were less/more/better/worse.....". This one is a contrasting, although called as comparing.

27 "Good grief. I guess it's more important to stay quite about how wonderful our military is than to MAYBE be looked at as supporting Bush in any way. Ugh."

That is the cost of being associated with the rabid anti-war movement. Success in Iraq means that Mr. Bush's policy's were wise and the left's were not. That means Bush gets a legacy of greatness and the left can't stand that prospect.

They have to pull for defeat in Iraq because without it, the hated Bush-Cheney Halliburton Junta gets to declare victory.

What a sad existence that must be. The left finds itself pulling for the troops to come home in military defeat so that they can declare a political victory.

Feel free to accuse them of being un-Patriotic. They've confessed, already.

Well, Bush should have anticipated how the MSN would spin his words.

That said, the reality is the liberals, leftists, hippies, etc; who protested Vietnam and claim credit for our withdrawel should have been blamed for all the atrocities, the boat people, Pol Pot, the re-education camps, the massacres, all of which followed the withdrawel.  They should have been made to face the results of their actions, results they knew full well would happen.

If they had, we might be better off today.

37 Ace hits it pretty much on the head. The problem with 'Journalism' is that  it knows the nuts and bolts of putting together a story but knows nothing about the importance of the story itself. Its kinda like listening to a mechanic talk on about an engine only when you hand him a wrench he says = 'ooooh never touch the stuff...'

That is also part of the problem with our education system too. Way too many know of 'education' but few now know the subjects that they are expected to convey. That's why when a Sagan or Chrichton shows up that can spin a yarn and the back story science of it correctly they make such a splash. That's why most liberals hate the book 'State of Fear'.

39 What can you say, eh?
Their doctoral thesis level of thinking was fully demonstrated by Gallelio reincarnated the other night on the History Channel.  "I saw a puff of smoke, so the building was brought down by controlled demolition charges," or "the lake is 6 miles away (by driving routes)."
So, yeah, that's some good nuance there.  I guess nuance means shades of crazy.

40 Journalists are probably some of the most useless people on the face of the planet. I think we should put them all in a spaceship and send them to colonize another planet. We can tell them a giant star goat is going to eat the Earth. They're stupid enough to buy that. Well, so long as we avoid the subjunctive case.

45 Actually, I stole that from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but since we morons don't read nuthin ever I suppose it was confusing. And while there was a TV show, it was British -- God knows conservatives only watch Nascar, Bassmasters, and Dukes of Hazard re-runs. 46 Entropy, they already wrote that book.  People are riffing on the big joke at the center of the plot of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galazy sequel Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

All the useless people were packed aboard a colony ship after being lied to that their world was going to end.

That ship landed on prehistoric earth, and those people became earthlings.*

*  Maybe.  The book suggests that maybe that primitive hominids on earth went on to become our ancestors after all.

47 "Bush Likens Iraq to Vietnam as 14 Americans Die in Copter Crash"

Uh, troops die in "copter crashes" in non combat zones too. In fact, in the "peace and prosperity" that was the Clinton years, more troops died than did in the first 4 years of OIF.

The total military dead in the Iraq war between 2003 and this month stands at about 3,133. This is tragic, as are all deaths due to war, and we are facing a cowardly enemy unlike any other in our past that hides behind innocent citizens. Each death is blazoned in the headlines of newspapers and Internet sites. What is never compared is the number of military deaths during the Clinton administration: 1,245 in 1993; 1,109 in 1994; 1,055 in 1995; 1,008 in 1996. That’s 4,417 deaths in peacetime but, of course, who’s counting?

It Didn't Work

By William F. Buckley Jr.

"I can tell you the main reason behind all our woes—it is America." The New York Times reporter is quoting the complaint of a clothing merchant in a Sunni stronghold in Iraq. "Everything that is going on between Sunni and Shiites, the troublemaker in the middle is America."

One can't doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed.
