Gen. Petraeus Has a 47% Approval Rate, Which Passes For High Approval In Today's DC

And this relatively high approval may translate to fair-to-high public respect for his report.

Why is a General who's actually winning a war after two years of bloody stalemate viewed positively by only 47% of the public?

Well, it shapes up like this:

47% think he's winning the war in Iraq.

Another 35% fear he's winning the war in Iraq.

Only the former, alas, count themselves as supporters.

The 35% is taking a wait-and-see attitude, hoping that Al Qaeda in Iraq can get its act together and win one for the Democratic National Committee.

1 How true. Pretty sad when one segment of the political system is vested in failure. But remember, they do "support" the troops.

How dare you impugn Al Qaeda's motives!

You, sir, ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Dare I say it...

Oh, and in seriousness, it's maybe worth pointing out that 47-21 is waaaaay different than 47-53.  Let's do a mathematical conversion here, to figure out what that translates to if everyone has an opinion:  47 + 21 =  68, 100/ 68 = 1.470588235, 1.47 * 47  = 69 (and 1.47 * 21 = 30 for the check that it adds to about 100).

So:  69% approval.  Not bad at all.

5 I thought it was 47 respect him, 21 don't and the rest don't even know who he is or what he's doing.

7 69% is a landslide

8 oh yeah, chickenhawk?
You support the general but you are too cowardly to go to Iraq and take a grenade for him?
Then again, what's a word for traitors who are too chicken to actually go and join Al Qaeda to fight America?  Are Daily Kos are yellowtails?  Crescent Wrenches?  I dunno.

But, yeah, 47% when every democrat and leftist is invested in defeat, so that 35% is down the drain.  That's pretty good.  What is scary is that this 35% isn't going to go away or get sane anytime soon.

9 Well, according to CNN:

August 16, 2007 Poll: Americans don't trust Iraq report

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A majority of Americans don't trust the upcoming report by the Army's top commander in Iraq on the progress of the war and even if they did, it wouldn't change their mind, according to a new poll.

We gave King David a fair amount of shit when he was our CG here at the 101st, and yes, when the rumor spread he'd volunteered us for a full year and not just the opening invasion we did call him General "Betrayed-Us" behind his back, but he's about the smartest fucker in uniform, so if anyone can win this game in the fourth quarter, I think it's him.

I figure we have a year to win it before the '08 elections pull the rug out from underneath us either way.

11 Its about time for the phony "Petraeus scandal" to be attempted.  The democrats simply can't allow this to happen.

I'm guessing they'll try some sex scandal, that's always a favorite.  I'm also guessing he knows they have to try something and is covering his back against the democrats even better than he guards against AQ.

12 I was thinking Purple Avenger was sounding a little too paranoid, but I am reminded of the puffing the MSM did of Fitzgerald before his report.  He was reported as a prosecutor's prosecutor and whatnot.  Top-flight guy, yadda yadda.  Very pravdaish.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see if Petraeus will receive any puffery.

That's an interesting catch on the CNN poll.

14 They do popularity polls about generals now? Is there one about me out there? Is there anything that won't get polled and then blogged on?

16 Democrats and the MSM have to undercut the General.
Democrats and the MSM want Al Qaeda to win, they want America to lose,
And the General is winning.
