Source: TNR Is A Lot More Worried Than They're Letting On; Scott Thomas Got His Job For Plame-ish Reasons: "Frankln Foer Doesn't Want To Tell TNR Staffer Elspeth Reeve Her Husband Is A Liar"

Reorganized, Re-edited, Corrected Post.

The actual quote was "Frank doesn't want to tell ___ her husband is a liar," offered up not by my source but by someone else. The blank has now been confirmed as TNR staffer Elspeth Reeve, and even though the quote was "husband," there's some question about that: weddingchannel.com says their wedding is coming in October. Though perhaps they had a quickie civil ceremony before his last deployment or something, with the formal ceremony to occur later.

Look, husband/fiancee, not sure it matters. It certainly seems that everyone in the TNR offices were under the impression they'd already been married.

I was going to let this slide and not report it but then TNR played the hard guys and fired the guy actually sharing information about this with people. Meanwhile Foer and Beuchamp are still drawing paychecks.

Needless to say, Elspeth Reeve has nothing in particular to do with this, other than, I guess, some guy who walked by in the hallway suggesting her husband for the Niger Iraq mission. Gracie's pretty firm on her innocence, and, even if he weren't, this was Foer's call, not hers.

Scott Thomas Beauchamp was not chosen for this job because he had some terrific amount of experience or credentials or integrity. He was picked for Plame-type reasons: He's married or engaged to someone at TNR.

As Gracie reported to me, this is openly discussed in the TNR offices. One representative quote: "Frank[lin Foer] doesn't want to call [woman's] husband a liar." That wasn't Gracie saying that, that was someone else in the office, explaining the inter-office politics of this.

Gracie: Okay: Although I'm 100% certain that the husband of a staff member is central to this, I'm only about 90% certain that the husband IS Scott Thomas -- the alternative possibility is that the husband is one of the soldiers vouching for Scott Thomas

me: okay.

well I was going to stay off of that anyway.
I was more asking about:
1) The fact it's an open secret in the office
2:30 AM 2) your opinion that "Scott Thomas" was chosen for poor reasons, having to do with personal familiarity, rather than obvious journalistic credentials
3) that it's your opinion foer is the real screw-up here.

Note: I'm including that to prove I wasn't super-eager to mention that Beauchamp only got the job through his engagement to a staffer. I was going to say merely that he got the job due more to personal familiarity and connections than any obvious qualifications.

I was going to hold off on that. Until they pissed me off.

It's all so Plame-ish. As Gracie wrote to me, of all the embeds and milbloggers and real journalists they could have picked for the job, they instead chose to go with a very partisan, very inexperienced blogger just out of "laziness." Just because they knew him. Just because it was easy.

I actually think part of the reason was that they knew Beauchamp's politics -- he having put them on display on his goofy blog -- and so, just like with Valerie Plame, they knew the report was going to come back the way they wanted it when they sent him. But Gracie says it's just Occam's razor: Laziness.

Still, he's just speculating on the reason (as am I).

BTW, I have long kinda-sorta wanted to embed in Iraq... if TNR wants to sponsor me, I am more than willing to do some light petting with Michelle Cottle, if need be.

Thanks to Liberrocky for nailing down confirmation of the marriage/engagement angle. I was up half the night googling that.

I really want to stress that I wasn't particularly psyched about reporting this part of the story. But honestly, the name's already out there anyway; I'm just the first to run with it. There would have been someone right behind me.

Plus, like I said, I think TNR is playing very dirty pool here.

Allah's Always Gotta Be A Dick Update: Allah is questioning whether my suggested timeline is right -- that Elspeth got Beauchamp the gig because they were engaged/married. Instead, he wonders: Did Beauchamp already get the gig, and then had a whirlwind courtship with Elspeth?

All I can say is that this would have had to have been a very quick courtship. The guy starts posting for TNR a couple of months ago and then he's married or engaged to a woman he couldn't possibly have met more than once or twice, owing to his overseas deployment?

Further, my information tells me they went to the same college together.

Dianna, for example, writes:

Ace, would you please tell Allah to go check TNR's staffer page? Elspeth Reeve attended the University of Missouri (Journalism School). So did Beauchamp, some sort of writing course.

I already told him this; he's still saying it's possible Beauchamp was hired independently of Elsepth, and then they had a lightning-fast courtship/engagement/marriage (the duration of which he was mostly overseas in Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq).

And he's right: It's possible. In the sense it violates no known physical laws of the universe.

Is it likely? No, it is not likely. But I will note the possibility of this rather unlikely scenario.

Allah also notes that Beauchamp may have already left Iraq, and have come back home in, say, January. And romanced Elspeth since then.

But if that's the case, TNR is doing some heavy-duty misleading, because they are deliberately creating the impression his dispatches are recent if not real-time.

...

Fired: I knew this, but wasn't sure if I was supposed to say anything about it.

TNR fired Gracie at 7:25 this morning with the non-explanation, "Your services are no longer required." This information is offered up by one of Gracie's psuedonyms ("near certainty" on that) at discarded lies.

I was holding that back because, other than Gracie sending me an email early AM telling me of this nasty wake-up call, I haven't been able to make contact and determine if I could run this information, or if a protest was planned, etc. In other words, my stating "my source was fired" sort of tells them they were right, eh? But it's been announced on the site they're busily checking (when they should be checking stuff in Iraq, no?).

That's why I had "near certainty" the person searching for Gracie's posts was from TNR, btw.

I guess I'm not letting anything out when I say the other blogger who vouched for Gracie was Sean Gleeson, over there at discarded lies. He's the one who told me about TNR searching discarded lies for hints about Gracie's identity -- which they seem to have found.

And that's sort of why I decided to reveal the marriage angle-- which I was going to hold back, but they pissed me off with this.

Thanks to Lewis from discarded lies for letting me know the information was already out there.

Re-Edit: After having put in doubt about Beuachamp being married to the staffer, I took it back out again.

Chickenhawk Offers His Services! Jeff Emmanuel, a special ops vet, offers to be the new Baghdad Diarist.

He won't get the job. For one thing, he's qualified. For another thing, he can't be guaranteed to deliver the anti-military fictions Beauchamp did.

For a third thing, he's not going steady with anyone at TNR.

Allah's got lots of updates, hard to keep up with it all.

Update on TNR's Mole-Hunt: I actually warned Gracie to delete all his browser history and the like last night. Alas, he wasn't at work, and besides, TNR probably had a record of all his web-activity anyway.

At any rate, I think they were busy in their offices last night checking web activity, and also maybe accessing everyone's computer for history. And then searching on discarded lies for Gracie's posts, to confirm the times.

Hi, Ace! I'm the one who told Sean that the IP address in your post was doing searches on discarded lies for Beth Greem, when we were discussing what we could do to better cloak Beth/Gracie's identity. At the time, I was only speculating that the searcher using that IP address might be from TNR. I've since investigated our logs further, and have determined that that particular IP address likely does not belong to TNR, and I regret that it's appearing here. I have since determined the actual IP address* that TNR's offices were using to access our site. A whois returns TNR as the owner of the IP block in question, while the 72.75.X.X IP is just some Verizon DSL account in the DC area and could be anyone.

I can authoritatively state that TNR did their investigation into Beth/Gracie's identity from their corporate network and their own netblock, not some Verizon DSL account. One of the mistakes Beth/Gracie made was using his computer at TNR in whistleblowing, which made their investigation much easier. Based on that, I would greatly appreciate it if you removed the 72.75.X.X address from your post, so as to avoid accusing someone who is likely uninvolved. Thank you.

That's from Evariste at discarded lies.

I'm deleting that IP now.

If you read one of pinheads blog items, he talkes about his future wife, I believe her name is "Priscilla."  Would be interesting to see if there is a Priscilla working at TNR.

Priscilla isn't the name of the staffer, which I actually know.  As I say in an update, either Priscila is an alias for for his wife, or it's her real name, in which case he's not directly married to the TNR staffer.  In which case, the staffer's husband is the one who recommended/vouched for Beauchamp.

I really like the name Elspeth.  It's a lovely old English name.  One major downside is it's a little close to Erzbet, specifically Erzbet Bathory who was a very terrible and disgusting person.

Back to Gracie, does she have standing for a wrongful termination suit?  IANAL but it seems as if TNR may have her on a non-disclosure clause.

I am glad for the work of the bloggers who are working to unravel this mystery as it seems there are hidden elements here the public would do well to know.

I wouldn't want to be in Private Beauchamp's boots right now.

One thing you do not do in the military is go outside the chain of command with crap like this (except under certain circumstances, none which which include tattling to TNR). Bad enough even if the allegations are true; far worse if the allegations are bullshit. We're fighting a PR war, and the military is still exquisitely sensitive to the damage Abu Ghraib did to the military's image both here and in Iraq. That the story contained as much fabrication and fabulist invention as it did the truth hardly mattered.

Private Beauchamp has probably committed several UCMJ-actionable offenses here. Depending on how things turn out, being hated by the guys in his unit might be the least of his problems -- he might be looking at a dishonorable discharge or even some time in the stockade, depending on how big of a dick the JAG decides to be.

A lot of couples, when faced with a deployment (real or imagined...) or pregnancy, will get legally married immediately but have the big expensive party with friends and family at the already-scheduled date months later.

I'm going to be rude and get them something they're not registered for.

Posted by: Heather at July 26, 2007 03:18 PM (yG+tb)

73 It is alos possible that the message re: returning from Germany and getting married was BS - may be an inside joke.  MajMaj is, it appears, an E-5 fire team leader.  Technically the first step up on Scott's chain of command (if Scott is in his team), but I would think if one were to be seriously late returning from leave, one would go to their squad leader at least?

Is anyone starting to feel sorry for Elspeth Reeve like me?

Last year, she gets hammered by her fellow progressives (Including Wonkette)for writing an article defending Ann Coulter.   Now, she mostly probably vouched for the integrity of her husband/fiance, only to now find out he was probably lying to her and her editors as to the validity of his claims.

So she was either in on the alleged lies (which will result in her firing), or her better worse half was lying to her and embarrassing her on a national level.

87 They could have gotten married in a civil ceremony, with the church wedding to be set in October (when he's rotating state side???)

I understand that people sometimes do this because you get a pay increase and/or additional benefits upon marriage, particularly when the service-member is overseas.  A "family separation allowance," I believe it is called.

Other than the outing of the douchenozzle, I think that catching up on all this stuff today is more interesting because of how civilized everyone is.

Even Ace here, who's only lack of civility is based on a sense of personal affrontery that someone would get fired for simply "speaking truth to power" in the form of gracie.

Other than that, everyones just calmly pursuing their quest for the ring, or whatever, though I'm sure Ace's childhood optimus prime action figure is getting a workout from transforming, in those moments when he needs to refocus, but thats to be expected.

Mike,

Let's let the 'obsession' thing go and get to the crux of the matter.

A generation of people went to fight a war that the left didn't like in 60's and were labeled war criminals, drugged out psychopaths and modern day Genghis Kahns for their trouble . Now these same douches on the left are trying to do it again but the difference is this time people who actually respect and appreciate the men and women who serve their country have a way to counter this crap before it becomes the accepted wisdom.

It seems the least that can be done for them.

Posted by: dave at July 26, 2007 04:13 PM (3W27q)

149 Trade craft people.  Practice REASONABLE FUCKING TRADECRAFT when you're ratting out villains like those at TNR.

- DO NOT under any circumstances use company IT/phone/wireless gear for anything other than company purposes. (this will stand you in good stead at any job)

- DO NOT rat out using a cellphone that has your name attached to it under any circumstances.  Untraceable TrakPhone bought for cash at WalMart - OK.  Verizon phone you get a bill for - NOT OK.  Destroy TrakPhone's every couple of days and get new ones.

- Keep your mouth SHUT when around people you consider enemies, keep it even tighter shut around your friends (unless they are implicated accomplices who are generally trustworthy out of self-preservation).

- Use anonymous proxies when probing web sites and Google searching from your home machine(s).  DO NOT get lazy and bypass this because its a slower connection using a proxy.  Suck it up, do what it takes to keep yourself safe.  Google and most web sites keep IP logs.  If you think your privacy will be respected by them, you're sadly deluded.  Google would rat you out in a heartbeat if it advanced their political agenda.  Use free library machines, but not the same one or library all the time.  Avoid patterns of usage.  Be random as possible.

- Pay phones are your friend.  Don't be a retard and use the one just down the street from your crib though.  Drive across town, drive to another town or even another state to make calls.  Yea, this is a PITA and it cost more money, but it will help keep you in the clear.   Doing a 400 mile round trip in the middle of the night and getting back in time for work the next day may be tough.  Its so tough that most people won't believe you'd bother to do it.

- DO NOT keep records at your crib or the office.  Find a nice off-site dead drop and stash the stuff there for safe keeping.   Cut an angle on a piece of PVC pipe so you can drive it into the ground easily and glue some sand on a PVC pipe cap for it.  It'll just look like a lump of dirt to someone just casually walking by.  Drive it into the ground along a lightly traveled road near some landmark - a mile marker, billboard, etc that you can find easily later on.  Fake a breakdown while making withdrawals and deposits.

Basically, be very very paranoid about your security once the game is afoot.

“I don’t think there’s usually enough men at these kind of events, so it’s really important to show up and support it,” said Scott Beauchamp, who endured a 24-hour bus ride from Columbia to attend Sunday’s march. “I think it’s really a civil rights issue.”

159 Guys, I want to be the voice of caution here vis-a-vis the details of this Beauchamp's life (pending marriage, possible girlfriends, and whatnot). The internet doth giveth, and the internet doth taketh away: do remember that many people have the same names, and even the same birthplaces. Some nefarious folks may even be planting these little nuggets around to make the unwary look foolish.

We already know what we need to know about this turd anyway. He'll have some close attention paid by his Company CO and the JAG, you may be assured, and this process will be substantially less fun than anything we can collectively do to him. And as for the TNR: remember that this is the same outfit that produced Stephen Glass. One more fabulist among the multitudes isn't all that interesting.

I vote we move on to more important matters, like making fun of Dave in Texas.

Crazy Stuff , by John Podhoretz at NRO -

There's a lot of crazy stuff circulating around the Internet about Scott Beauchamp. Some of it is from his own literarily overwrought blog, which reveals Beauchamp is an ambitious guy who was hooked on portentous and pretentious writing (his own and other writers') well before he arrived in Baghdad. But there's other crazy stuff too. Someone has purportedly discovered that Beauchamp is engaged to a New Republic staffer because of an Internet wedding registry. I'm not linking to it because, after looking through it, I think it's spurious — only six gifts are sought, no one's bought any of them, and there are no other items registered in their names at any other wedding site. If someone is now manufacturing bogus wedding registries to prove something — even to expose a relationship that actually exists — then there's a lot more lunacy attaching to Beauchamp's tales besides the details of the tales themselves, true or untrue.

Maybe I'll write a treatise on how to bug an office next.  That's always fun.  Did you know a fully functional bug with a broadcast range of a couple hundred feet can be fit into a 3 into 1 plug adapter?  Slap that baby in, walk away and enjoy crystal clear conversations on a weather band channel ;->

So now his CO (and his CO's CO, and his CO's CO's CO, ad nauseam) have a major hair across their collective asses -- the press keeps calling, no one's getting any work done, and the Army has just taken another shot in the nuts from one of its own. I just read through this buddyfucker's blog. The boy has serious issues and deluions of becoming the next Hemmingway. He seems to think having some military service will give him enough street cred to get a huge book deal or something. Here's an example of his rantings:

Every morning I get up and feel retarded for joining the army.
Every morning I get up and feel proud for serving my country.
Every morning I get up and dont want to get up.
Every morning I get up and wish that I was back in college.
Every morning I get up and appreciate everything that I'm learning here.
Every morning I get up and wish my roomate wasnt such a big fan of Disturbed...
Every morning I get up and I'm a little more liberal than the day before
Every morning I get up and try to recite a fact from something I read last night.
Every morning I get up and wish I was as free as the people that I'm "fighting for"
Every morning I get up and think I'm a tool for global corporations
Every morning I get up and miss my mother
Every morning I get up and shave
Every morning I get up and realize how much I love my comrades
Every morning I get up and say I'm Scott Beauchamp, in the army, living in Germany, and this is my life, and I'm going to be treated like shit today and do landscaping and janitorial work and practice killing people and there could be no other way to appreciate what I had or what I'm going to have once I get out other than enduring this now when all I really want to do is teach history and lay around and read and hustle around and repair the world (tikkun olam) and sift through knowledge and improve culture and learn how to sail and work in soup kitchens and start a family and really, I mean REALLY study the best the western civilization has to offer and facilitiate the mystery and power through everything I do, but I cant do it without getting through this army experience first, which will add a legitimacy to EVERYTHING i do afterwards (emphasis mine), and totally bolster my opinions on defense, etc, and of course its making me a lot less lazy, just because im not use to being lazy any more, etc.
Every morning I get up

After all, it is a rather important country to Canada.

And the question here was about a job... I think Ace's politics wouldn't stop him from getting a job with all organizations, particularly politically motivated ones that share his broad philosophy... but comments about light petting in order to get a job, no matter how tongue-in-cheek, would.

227 The difference is context. He's making these comments in a discussion about a job. They're appropriate enough comments to make among friends... perhaps not wise, but within reason.

But the juxtaposition of the comment with what came in the same sentence was, probably intentionally, funny yet jarring:

"BTW, I have long kinda-sorta wanted to embed in Iraq... if TNR wants to sponsor me, I am more than willing to do some light petting with Michelle Cottle, if need be."

I'm sure there was an attempt at humour their and I've never denied that.

My comment was that I wouldn't hire someone who made those statements. Too much potential for liability. And the fact an employer could be shown to have been aware of those statements ahead of time increases liability.

Here's another examle he wrote while in Germany, before his unit was in Iraq. Seems familiar, doesn't it? He sounds like Walter Mitty with a certain meta-narrative:

i make me feel stupid
"Shit, I don't know...put a 556 in his head"
On the street below the mans brown face dissolves into a thick red mist. The lights in the cities houses shut off in unison. Elecricity rationing. Water rationing too. You ever tried to survive for more than a few hours in hundred and twenty degree weather without water? In the streets the kids bodies start convulsing in semi-orgasmic rhythms. Their pants fill up with shit and piss and the smart ones sneak out to the fields to hidden caches of water jugs and trinkets of candy from the american soldiers.
"See that sarge, kids digging or something?"
"Well, better safe then sorry. Cap his ass Leclaire."
"You sure sarge?"
"Well, im either right or wrong. And if I'm wrong im still right because i could have been right even though i was wrong."
They watch the sliver of red sun fall slower and slower, silhouetting the little barbarians falling bodies. The Chaplain turns and walks back towards the FOB in contemplation. Gotta rack out early tonight. Handing out bibles in the marketplace tomorrow, early. Unintelligible rap blares out of the open doors of the HUMVEE.

I can barely make my self read this drivel. The poems in particular are unbelievably bad. Kipling he most certainly is not! Here's another little tidbit. Seems the freak actually tried to get into ROTC while in Germany. Why he tried to do this just before his unit was sent to Iraq, I leave for him to explain...or not. Can't you just smell the moonbattiness:

My experience in the Army so far has been a lot like war: long doldrums of boredom intermixed with drunken whirlwind weekends of hanky panky and martini politics...both also lead to anguish and permanent emotional scars. I was invited to participate in the Green to Gold (ROTC) program at SIU-Carbondale, and I started my application packet today. I doubt that I'll get a scholarship due to my lackluster GPA, but at least I'll be coming home and going to school. My goal is to become an incompetent leader that gets fragged by 30 something NCO's at a forward operating base in Sadr City (emphasis mine). Heres to the memories and stardust kid. love, Scott

236 Regardless of whether or not some of his allegations are true, this kind of sums up the Left's view that our troops are the enemy.

Allowing that TNR is roughly indicative of the Left in general, which I think is fair, their role in this is akin to an enemy operative in that they are actively seeking information that can be used against US troops in particular, and America more broadly.

And of course even if the guy is telling the truth, the best that can be said of him is that he went covert on his buddies for personal gain, which of course establishes his complete lack of character and integrity.

242 Wow, this is so much more useful than picking up a gun and fighting.  As a former infantryman, I can't recall ever encountering the rantings of a bigger pussy than you.  The fight is over there, you ass.  But you'd rather run your mouth over here.  You couldn't cut it in the service anyway.  Too big a mouth, and balls too small.

The fact that this guy exists and is in Iraq proves that all you guys are fools and/or liars.  You guys are embarrassed by this, so you go after him and his family every which way you can in order to punish him for your embarassment.

Bullies are cowards.

I'm amazed at all of you who decry this guy. Don't you love the war? Yet HE'S the one over there. If he's such a moonbat, why pick such a dangerous job? Sure the guy probably has a few screws loose, but it doesn't mean he's not telling the truth.

Do you automatically assume someone is NOT telling the truth? If so, why do you believe Bush, Cheney, Gonzalez, etc etc... because they've proven their trustworthiness?

248 There won't be an answer forthcoming.  It doesn't fit the agenda.

WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.

And what is this bill?

This bill renders a horrible accounting. Newly placed gravestones. Mangled bodies. Shattered minds. Broken hearts and homes. Economic instability. Depression and all its attendant miseries. Back-breaking taxation for generations and generations.

For a great many years, as a soldier, I had a suspicion that war was a racket; not until I retired to civil life did I fully realize it. Now that I see the international war clouds gathering, as they are today, I must face it and speak out.

General Smedley Butler, USMC

The following was found at Op-For:

'I’m active Army & an Iraq vet.

I just pulled up “Scott Thomas Beauchamp” on the secure “Army Knowledge Online” website. It lists his current rank as “PV2″. (That data is kept accurate via pay records on that website.)

In his Sep 06 blog post he listed his rank as “Private First Class”. That indicates that without a doubt he was busted at least one rank as part of Article 15 proceedings under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and he likely has a strong ax to grind with his chain of command.'

URL: http://op-for.com/2007/07/scott_thomas_exposed.html

(That Beauchamp currently identifies himself as 'Private', vice 'Private First Class' or 'PFC' would seem to support the above statement found at Op-For.)

I asked people on AKO whatsiwhat with this guy.  I got you and a bunch of others.

The guy probably will get an admin: I doubt if they want the bother of charging him except maybe some NJP.  What might be good would be a Summary which is a Federal Conviction.  Might get a BCD, but I think admin is it.

What surprised me is that he is not in literal fear of his life.  All I can say is that he must be so insignif, that no one would bother.

He will be in good shape once he gets back to NYC and marriage, being view as yet another martyr.  He should get some basic make work.
